I spent a few days recovering from the Studio Tour, I was wiped and last week, I was able to do some more recovering..... I was invited by a very talented artist friend Marion Evamy to come and share a week of painting in a waterfront cabin in Qualicum Beach. Lisa Kirk, another beautiful artist and dear friend from Courtenay was invited as well....  And yes, it was as good as it sounds! What could be better than creating in a gorgeous environment, surrounded by talented supportive positive people. We ate, painted, ate some more, painted some more, ate, chatted, laughed, slept and then we did it all over again for 5 days. Heavenly! I came back home with 9 canvases, only 1 of them is pretty much finished. I did some experimenting and had a blast. I'll show you some of the new creations as I finish them. Thank you Marion and Lisa for a wonderful week, yes! We can do it again!

Now, after being home for just a few days I am on te road again, this time to a plein air event in Ashcroft, BC. I am excited about participating in it and painting along the way. We are taking a few extra days to stop and paint whatever strikes our fancy. Will share the adventures when I get back! Wish me luck!

Tardé unos cuantos días en recuperarme del taller de estudios, estaba muy muy cansada y la semana pasada puede hacer un poco de recuperación… Fuí invitada por una artista amiga llamada Marion Evamy a ir y compartir una semana de pintura en una casa frente al mar en Qualicum Beach. Lisa Kirk, otra hermosa artista y querida amiga de Courtenay también fue invitada y si, fue tan bueno como suena! Qué es mejor que estar en un ambiente hermoso, creando y rodeada de gente positiva y con talento. Comimos, pintamos, comimos de nuevo, pintamos, comimos, charlamos, nos reímos, compartimos, dormimos y repetimos todo eso durante cinco días. Estaba en el cielo! Volví a casa con nueve lienzos y solamente uno de ellos pu de estar terminado pero hice bastante experimentación y me divertí muchísimo. Les muestro las nuevas creaciones a medida que las termino. Gracias Marion y Lisa por una semana maravillosa! Si! Lo podemos hacer de nuevo!

Ahora después de estar en casa unos días estoy en la ruta de nuevo, esta vez camino a un evento de pintada al aire libre en Ashcroft BC. Estoy muy entusiasmada con participar en él y a  pintar en el camino. Nos tomamos unos días extras para parar y pintar donde tengamos ganas. Les cuento las aventuras cuando vuelva, deséenme suerte.

Oh! What an amazing weekend I had for the Cadboro Bay-Gordon Head Studio Tour Back on May 7&8. I had so many people come through the house, a lot of sales and overall a really great success! It's always great to see people's reactions to my art and it was great to meet so many new people and to visit with friends I hadn't seen in a while!

This is the first time I had an event like this in my new home but I had done it before several times in my other house so I kind of knew what to expect.   After much thinking I ended up deciding not to open the studio itself because it is upstairs, the stairs are made of wood and I thought it could be too slippery, that's the last thing you need during an event like that right?  I did have however quite a roomie area for display and I think everything looked pretty good with a few clip-on lamps to help the poor lighting in the room. I am delighted many of my paintings found their forever home during the weekend. :) Thank you to the ones bought paintings or cards, much appreciated and thank you as well to everybody that came over, your support means a lot.

Unfortunately, my husband and daughter were out of town that weekend and I failed to take photos of the event, note taen for next year! It looks like again,  I took a good holiday from blogging so I'll break it into a couple of posts so as not to bore you too much!

Oh! Que fin semana especial tuve para el tour de talleres el 7 y 8 de mayo. Tuve tanta gente que vino a visitarme, muchas ventas, en general un éxito total! Es siempre muy bueno ver la reacción de la gente a mi arte, fue bárbaro conocer muchas personas nuevas y ver amigos que hacía tiempo que no veía. 

Esta es la primera vez que hago un evento de este tipo en mi casa nueva pero lo he hecho varias veces en mi casa vieja así es que ya sabía mas o menos qué esperar.  Después de mucho pensar decidí no abrir el taller ya que está en la planta alta y las escaleras que son de madera pueden ser bastante resbalosa, es lo último que hace falta en un evento como este, que alguien se caiga y se lastime! De todas formas tuve mucho lugar en la planta baja para mostrar  cuadros y me parece que todo se veía muy bien con la ayuda de unas cuantas lámparas para tener mejor iluminación. Estoy muy muy contenta ya que muchos de mis cuadros encontraron hogares este este fin de semana. Gracias a todas esas personas que compraron cuadros o tarjetas  y gracias igualmente a toda la gente que vino a verme, su apoyo significa mucho para mí. De corazón.

Es una lástima que mi esposo y mi hija estaban de viaje y yo me olvidé de sacar fotos durante el evento, anotado ya para la próxima vez. Parece que de nuevo me tomé una buenas vacaciones del blog asi que lo voy a cortar en varias partes para no aburrirlos!

Last week I went with the Al Frescoes to paint again at Island View Beach. The day was absolutely gorgeous, no wind, sunshine and lots of painters around. There were many options to paint that day and I decided to try this view  with the path, logs and some water.  I was worried about the whole foreground but int he end I kept it loose and I am quite pleased with the way it turned out. I am still looking at it and deciding whether I will make a couple of changes or not. Getting ready to go paint again this morning so stay tuned. And speaking of getting ready I am almost there for the studio tour happening this weekend.

La semana pasada fui con los  AlFrescoes a pintar a Island View Beach de nuevo. El día estuvo absolutamente hermoso, sin viento, con sol y muchos pintores por todos lados. Había varias opciones para pintar ese día y decidí tratar esta vista del caminito, los troncos y un poco de mar. Estaba un poco preocupada con todo el primer plano pero lo dejé sin detalles y estoy bastante contenta con cómo me salió. Como siempre,  sigo evaluando si le voy a hacer algunos cambios o no.  Me estoy preparando para ir a pintar de nuevo esta mañana,  les muestro la semana que viene. Y hablando de prepararme estoy casi lista ya para el tour de talleres este fin de semana.
Como les dije antes, este cuadro,  como muchos otros, va a estar disponible en el tour de talleres del que soy parte este sábado y domingo 7 y 8 de mayo de 11:00 a 4:00 de la tarde. A while back I was scheduled to do a demo a Coast Collective where I show and sell my work. I decided to do this piece which came from an ealy morning run back in Feb. I was running, saw this flower stand and just HAD to go back to take a few pictures of it.

Decidí ese día pintar este cuadrito que resultó de una mañana en la salí a correr en Febrero.  Estaba corriendo y ví este puesto de flores.... simplemente tuve que parar y sacar algunas fotos.

A few weeks ago I went with the Al Frescoes to Tulista Park in Sydney to paint for our regular Friday pain out. I must confess that I was not very excited when I saw the location as I didn't feel there was too much there to paint. But as I pulled up the parking lot, I saw this gorgeous strip of light in the sky and THAT is what I wanted to paint right away. I  know now to trust my first instinct when I go plein air painting, to go for THAT particular thing that caught my eye at the beginning.  You can continue to search for the "perfect" spot or view to paint for half the morning if you are not careful but you usually end up wasting most of the time searching instead of setting up and getting going right away. I always tell myself I can always come back and paint another one in this location. I didn't do too much to this one once back in  the studio, I just added a few touches of light on the water I felt were needed.
I am dilligently getting ready for the Cadboro Bay-Gordon Head Studio Tour  which is this next Sat & Sunday May 7 & 8,11 to 4 pm. I am opening my home and studio to the public so come and visit! 3876A Finnerty Rd. My house is at the very end of the long driveway, see you then!

Hace unas semanas fuí con los Al Frescos al Parque Tulista en Sidney a pintar para una de nuestras pintadas de los viernes. Tengo que confesar que no estaba muy entusiasmada con el lugar donde íbamos ya que creía que no había demasiadas cosas interesantes ahí para pintar. Pero cuando llegué al estacionamiento ví una luz hermosísima en el cielo y eso fué lo que quise pintar inmediatamente. A esta altura ya sé que debo confiar en mi primer instinto cuando voy a pintar afuera, pintar sin dudar esa cosa especial que me llamó la atención en su primer momento. A veces uno puede seguir tratando durante toda la mañana de encontrar el lugar o la vista perfecta para pintar  y si no se tiene cuidado se puede perder la mayor parte del tiempo buscando ese lugar en lugar de empezar inmediatamente. Siempre me digo ahora que si hay mas vistas buenas, puedo volver y pintar otro cuatro en este lugar, simple! No cambié muchas cosas a este cuadro una vez que volví al taller, simplemente le agregué unos toques de luz en el agua que me parecía eran necesarias.
Me estoy preparando para el  Tour de Talleres de Cadboro Bay-Gordon Head que es el Sábado y Domingo que viene, 7 & 8 de Mayo de 11 a 4 . Estoy por abrir mi casa y taller al público para compartir mi arte. Mi dirección es 3876A Finnerty Rd y mi casa es la tercera desde la calle.  Mi caminito para la casa es largo... Nos vemos!

Mystic

Because the painting I showed you last time, "Mystic Vale" was on hold for someone at the time and I had originally painted it for a show, I decided to paint a different one for the "Illustrating Emily" Show organized by the Island Illustrators Society.  I decided to do the same image but trying to apply an "Emily look" to the landscape. It was a grat way to experiment with a different approach, I really really enjoyed it.  I am quite pleased with how it turned out. I don't know that this is a good photo of it but I don't have the painting anymore so this one will have to do for now!

The exhibition runs May 1 to 14 at Emily Carr House., (207 Government St. - 250-383-5843) with an Opening Reception on Sunday, May 1, 2-4 pm.
I will be in attendance on Sunday and I am excited to actually visit Carr House for the first time, I must confess I haven't been there yet in the 21 years I have lived here!
Also note that admission and a portion of the artwork sales go to support the Emily Carr House. Admission to Carr House is required to see the show with the exception of our opening reception date when it will be free to the public and friends. This a great chance to visit (me, some great artwok and Carr House!)

El "Valle Místico" que les mostré la vez anterior fue un cuadro que pinté originalmente para una muestra, pero debido a que había una persona interesada en él yo decidí pintar otro diferente para esta muestra que se llama "Ilustrando a Emily". Decidí hacer la misma imagen pero tratando de aplicar un poco el estilo de Emily al paisaje; fue una gran forma de experimentar con un enfoque diferente. Estoy bastante contenta con cómo me salió. Me parece que no es la mejor foto pero no tengo el cuadro ya  así que este va a tener que andar por ahora.

La muestra va desde el 1 al 14 de Mayo  en la Emily Carr House., (207 Government St. - 250-383-5843) con una recepción de apertura el sábado 1 de mayo de 2:00 a 4:00 de la tarde. Yo voy a estar voy a estar allí el domingo y estoy bastante entusiasmada con visitar la Casa Carr por primera vez, debo confesar que a pesar de haber vivido 21 años en esta ciudad todavía no he ido a visitarla. También quiero  tengan en cuanta que la entrada y una porción de las ventas de los cuadros están destinadas a recaudar fondos para la Casa Carr. Se requiere tarifa de admisión para entrar y  para ver la muestra con excepción de la recepción de apertura que vamos a tener: la entrada va a ser gratis para el público y  los amigos. Esta es una gran oportunidad para visitar.

Getting started in Mystic Vale - Uvic
Empezando el día en el Valle Místico - Uvic

I have mentioned before that I am a member of the Island Illustrators Society and I have been participating int he different shows the society organizes. The show this year is called "Illustrating Emily Carr". So a couple of months ago I set out to create my piece for it. Emily used to do a LOT of plein air painting, she used to paint the forests, the trees, the local sights.... So I chose to do that, immerse myself in nature and attempt to put into canvas.  I went to a forest VERY close to my house, called Mystic Vale which is  inside the Uvic Campus. The light coming through the trees is always really beautiful in there and it is like a little oasis in a very urban area. I set up my easel and started painting. Loved it, painting  outdoors is always a really beautiful experience, even when the light changes, the sun comes in and out, it's too cold, or too hot, (haha, you may wonder why it's a great experience???)   You get to listen to the sounds of the forest, the wind, the birds and it all goes into your painting.... Some people stopped by to see what I was doing and chat. One very kind lady in particular took these photos that I am posting. Thank you so much Gillian for taking them and sending them to me. And thank you Brian and Madelaine for coming out to play with me that morning!

I am very pleased with how this painting turned out. Even though I set out to paint it for the show, "Mystic Vale"  is on hold for someone who is interested in it so because of it I decided to do another one for the show which I will share in the next post! Stay Tuned!

Les he contado antes que soy miembro de la Sociedad de Ilustradoes de la Isla y participo regularmente de las muestras que la sociedad organiza. La de este año se llama "Ilustrando a Emily Carr" y por eso hace un par de meses salí a crear mi cuadro para esa muestra.  Emily solía salir a pintar MUCHO al aire libre, ella pintaba los bosques, los árboles, muchos lugares típicos de la zona así es que elegí hacer eso, inmersarme en la naturaleza y tratar de ponerla sobre el lienzo. Fui a un bosquecito muy cerca de mi casa que se llama el Velle Místico que queda dentro del campo de la universidad. La luz del sol que se filtra entre los árboles es siempre muy hermosa en este lugar que es como un pequeño oasis en el medio en una zona muy urbana. Armé el atril y empecé a pintar. Me encantó! El pintar afuera muchas veces es una experiencia muy hermosa, aún cuando la luz la luz cambia, el sol entra y sale, aveces hace frio....  o calor etc. etc. Jaja, se deben estar preguntando porqué digo que es hermoso..... se pueden escuchar los sonidos del bosque, el viento, los animales, los pájaros....  todo eso va dentro del cuadro. Varias personas pararon a mirar lo que yo hacía y a conversar. Una señora muy amable en particular me sacó varias fotos y las he agregado acá. Muchísimas gracias Gillian por tomar las fotos y por mandármelas. Y gracias Brian y Madelaine por salir a jugar conmigo esa mañana!

Estoy muy contenta con cómo salió este cuadro. A pesar de que empecé a pintar esto para una muestra, "Valle Místico" está reservado para alguien que está interesado en comprarla y a raíz de eso decidí pintar un cuadro distinto para la muestra que se las voy a mostrar en el próxima post.  Van a tener que esperar.

I don't know why I am having such a hard time writing on the blog.... the good thing is that I am still creating and painting, just not sharing....

This is a commission I had a while back and I am very pleased with how it turned out. Michelle is friend who has gone through quite a bit in the last while. She wanted to have some of my art in her home and chose a piece similar to this one which was sold. I had been wanting to paint it again in oils this time, the previous one was acrylics, fortunately she was very pleased with it. I helped her hang it in her home and as soon as they were up (she got 2 of my paintings :) she said "Oh , Happiness" and that's how the name for the painting came. I wish you Michelle a lot of happiness in the coming years! Thank you for choosing to have my art in your home, I am touched!

Interestingly enough, this inspiration and reference for this piece has changed dramatically, those trees are no longer there, they have been cut in order for the planned development to go ahead. I drove that road for 5 years and that sight took my breath away every time I saw it, it was the old site for Coast Collective, my old job. Gorgeous spot, I trust new trees will replace these ones and one day they will be just as beautiful!

La verdad es que no sé por qué me está costando tanto escribir en el blog… Lo bueno es que sigo creando y pintando, simplemente no estoy compartiendo…

Este es un pedido que alguien me había echo hace un tiempo y estoy muy contenta con el resultado. Michelle es una amiga que ha tenido malos momentos estos últimos tiempos. Ella quería tener un cuadro mío en su hogar y eligió uno similar a uno que yo ya había vendido. Lo bueno es que yo tenía intenciones de pintarlo de nuevo pero en óleos esta vez, el anterior era en acrílico, y por suerte, a ella le gustó mucho. La ayudé a colgarlo en su hogar y apenas terminamos, ella dijo "Oh, Qué felicidad" y así es como surgió el nombre a este cuadro.  Michelle,  te deseo mucha felicidad en los próximos años,  gracias por elegir tener mi arte en tu casa! Es un honor!

De forma interesante, la inspiración y referencia para este cuadro ha cambiado dramáticamente, esos árboles ya no están, los han cortado para comenzar con la construcción de departamentos  que estaba planeada. Yo pasé por esa calle durante cinco años ya que es la antigua ubicación de Coast Collective, mi antiguo trabajo,  y admiré y disfruté esta vista cada otoño. Es un lugar muy bello, seguro que van a plantar nuevos árboles en lugar de los viejos y algún día van hacer tan hermosos como estos.

I am still trying to get caught up with posting here. This was painted back at the beginning of March at Island View Beach which is up in the Saanich Peninsula, about 20 minutes from my house. It is of course a beautiful place where you can do quite a few paintings.  Brian and myself got together that morning and painted to our hearts content, all bundled up as you can see.  It was supposed to be raining, but the rain held off just until we were done. I am very pleased with lots of the things that happened here, Brian, we need to go back there!

Sigo tratando de ponerme al día con todos los cuadros que he echo y no publicado. Este lo pinté al comienzo de marzo en la Playa de Island View Beach  que está en la Península de Saanich, a alrededor de 20 minutos de mi casa. Es por supuesto un lugar muy hermoso en el que se pueden pintar unos cuántos cuadros. Mi amigo Brian y yo nos juntamos esa mañana y pintamos todos abrigados como ustedes pueden ver. Se suponía que iba a llover pero la lluvia aguantó hasta que habíamos terminado. Estoy muy contenta con muchas cosas en este cuadro....  Brian, tenemos que volver a esa playa!

At the end of February I went to paint on the Royal Roads University grounds with 2 painter friends. We ended  up enjoying this beautiful view on the water on a not so cold still winter morning. Interestingly enough, I am standing next to the buildings in this painting . I like lots of what happened in this painting but I am not 100% sure it will stay as it is. I may change a few things here and there.  The grasses in the estuary had not yet started to grow and they were this dried up green which was actually very beautfiul..  It was a great morning, Thank you David and Charlie!

A fines de Febrero fui a pintar a la Universidad Royal Roads con dos amigos pintores. Terminamos al final pintando sobre la costa  y  disfrutando de la hermosa vista esa mañana no tan fría de invierno. De manera interesante, les cuento que yo estaba pintando al lado de los edificios que ya había pintado en este cuadro. Me gustan  muchas de los cosas que pasaron en este cuadro pero todavía no estoy al 100% segura si va a quedar así como está, tal vez cambie algunas cosas. Los pastos del estuario no habían empezado a crecer todavía y  tenían este color verde seco que en realidad era muy muy hermoso. Fue una gran mañana gracias  David y Charlie!

I am very pleased and excited to have 2 paintings accepted into the Federation of Canadian Artists  2016 Spring Exhibition. It is always an honour to be part of shows with this group. "Anchored" was painted this last January when I was experimenting with larger oils. I was pleased with the results. "Old Timers" was a plein-air piece I did last summer while we were anchored at Genoa Bay.

Painting "for" shows can be a stressful event for me. It seems that in the back of my head I am always judging every single stroke I make: "Oh no, this will ruin it, this doesn't work..... blah, blah, blah" and it makes me get tighter and tighter with my painting, in this way completely losing the fun of painting. I was working on something different from what I submitted for this show and that added stress of "this painting has to work out". It paralyzed me and I didn't finish them in time. So instead of not submitting anything,  I took a look at other paintings I had produced during this past year and picked 2 I felt comfortable submitting to be juried. I was VERY pleased when they did get in. This reinforces my idea that we must just paint, whatever we are called to paint at the moment, loving and enjoying the process. If we manage to  do that, there will be gems worthy of  juried shows and events.

The show runs from April 6 -17 with an opening reception today Sunday, April 10 from 2 to 4 pm. I will be in attendance today so please say hi if you stop by. The show is at Coast Collective Gallery, #103 - 318 Wale Road in Colwood  (Open Hours: Wed to Sun 11 to 5 pm.)

Estoy muy contenta ya que tengo 2 cuadros aceptados en la Muestra de Primavera de la Federación de Artistas Canadienses. Siempre es un honor participar en las exhibiciones organizadas por este grupo.  Pinté "Anclado"  este Enero pasado cuando estaba experimentando con óleos mas grandes. Estoy bastante contenta con los resultados. "Viejitos"  fue un cuadro que pinté al aire libre este verano pasado cuando estabamos anclados en una bahía que se llama Genoa Bay.

El pintar específicamente "para" exhibiciones juradas es muy estresante a veces para mí. Parece que  es como que yo juzgara cada pincelada que doy.... "Oh, no, esto va a arruinar el cuadro, esto no funciona.... blah, blah, blah". Esto hace que poco a poco me paralice, y de esta maner no disfruto mas el pintar. Estaba trabajando en  un par de cuadros espcíficamente para esta muestra y con el estres de "este cuadro me tiene que salir bien", no los terminé a tiempo. Asi que en lugar de no presentar nada, me fijé en lo que ya tenía pintado este año pasado y seleccioné 2 cuadros. Me puse MUY contenta cuando fueron selccionados para ser parte de la  muestra. Este proceso fortalece mi idea de que debemos pintar de acuerdo a lo que nos inspira en su momento, disfrutando del proceso y al hacer eso, va a haber ciertas piezas que se destacan para ser presentadas en mustras juradas.

Esta exhibición va desde el 6 al 17 de Abril con una recepción hoy Domingo 10 de Abril de 2 a 4 pm. Voy a estar ahí hoy asi que pasen a saludar si pueden. La muestra es en la  Galería de Coast Collective #103 - 318 Wale Road en Colwood (Miercoles a Domingo de 11 a 5 )

It looks like I took holidays from blogging! I have bene painting but have been very busy with the garden, spring break, a 4 day mini-Easter holiday and delivering paintings to customers :) My apologies, today I am posting this blog and finishing my taxes! :) Will be glad when that is done!!

A few weeks a ago I went painting with the Alfrescoes to Chinatown. It was wonderful to be there with so many noises, colours and  people walking by. There was a group of preschool kids on a field trip and they were ooooing and aaawwwing in front of our easels. There was some music played every so often from the Gates at the entrance of Chinatown. It all made the experience of being there so much richer. The cars parked in front of my subject kept changing, a couple of times, cars and trucks pulled up right in front of my subject, covering most of it, but they never stayed long enough to spoil the morning.... the joys of plein air.

I am pretty happy with what I did, I cleaned it up a bit in the studio but not too much as I didn't want to loose the freshness of the sketch, overall not bad for a couple of hours of fun!

Parece que me tomé vacaciones del blog! Si he pintado mucho pero no he publicado nada, he estado ocupada con el jardín, vacaciones de primavera, un mini-viaje de 4 días para Pascua y entregando cuadros vendidos :) Mis disculpas, hoy publico esto y termino mis impuestos! :) Voy a estar re-contenta cuando termine eso!!

Hace varias semanas fui a pintar con los Alfrescoes al Barrio Chino. Fue hermoso estar ahí con tantos ruidos, colores y gente caminando. Había un grupo de chicos de pre-escolar que estaban de paseo y se paraban frente a nuestros atriles admirando lo que pintábamos. Había música que a cada rato sonaba de las puertas de entrada al Barrio Chino. Todo esto hizo que la experiencia fuera tanto más gratificante. Los autos que estaban estacionados frente a lo que yo estaba pintando cambianban a cada rato, un par de veces autos y camionetas pararon bien al frente, tapando la mayoría de lo que yo estaba pintando, pero nunca se quedaron tanto tiempo como para arruinarme el día… El placer del pintaron libre.

Mis amigas  Alice Saltiel-Marshall de Alberta y  Sharlene Stushnov Lee estaban pintando con nosotros esa mañana y sacaron varias fotos! Miren arriba con las explaciones.

Estoy bastante contenta con lo que pinté, cambié algunas cosas una vex en el taller pero no demasiado porque no quería perder la espontaneidad, en general no está tan mal por un par de horas de diversión.

I am trying to get caught up with paintings that I haven't posted here in the blog.  Every year I buy amaryllis and  paperwhites in Oct/Nov to have flowers in the house through Christmas and winter in general. I LOVE having them,  they make me smile instantly! This year I actually got to paint some. Hope you like them!

I said I was behind in posting and I was not kidding.  I did this one about a month ago and I never posted it becasue I wanted to change a couple of things to it. I went about it a bit differently than usual without so much drawing and planning as I was wanting to put more than anything my impressions of the bouquet on the canvas. I am not sure I was successful in that, but I am pleased with the result.... The title comes from thoughts that were going through my mind while painting and after finishing..... Many artists, including myself, usually have a monkey on our shoulder, nattering things in our ear, things that are typically not good.... that painting is not good, what are you thinking? You are not good, they are better, etc, etc, you get the picture....  When I finished painting I went, you know what?? You ARE more than enough! I was actually discussing this with a fellow artists just the other day. We have to do daily work on this, I do at least,  and the best way to shut the monkey for me is to DO, to be in action. When I don't DO, the monkey gets louder. While I am busy doing, the monkey has no space to talk too much, or if he does, I can't hear him! :) We just have to remember to be kind to ourselves.

Les dije que estaba atrazada con mostrarles cuadros y no era en broma. Pinté esto hace como un mes pero quería cambiarle un par de cosas. Ataqué este lienzo de forma diferente a como lo hago siempre, menos planeado, con menos dibujo inicial,  ya que quería poner más que nada mi impresión del ramo de flores sobre el lienzo. No estoy segura si tuve éxito en hacer eso o no pero estoy bastante contenta con el resultado.... El título viene de pensamientos que pasaban por mi cabeza mientras pintaba y después de haber terminado.... Muchos artistas, yo incluída, tenemos un monito sobre el hombro  que nos dice cosas en el oído, normalmente cosas no muy buenas... ese cuadro no es bueno, de dónde sacaste esa idea? vos no sos muy buena, los otros son mejores, etc, etc, se dan idea de los que les digo.... Cuando terminé el cuadro, me dije: "Sabés qué?? SI que sos más que suficiente! Justamente estaba charlando sobre esto con otra artista hace unos días. Tenemos que trabajar en esto a diario, yo por lo menos, y la mejor forma de que el mono se calle es HACER, entrar en acción. Mientras estoy ocupada  haciendo, el mono no tiene espacio para decir mucho, o al hacer no lo puedo escuchar! :) 

tenemos que acordarnos de ser amables con nosotros mismos.

This is the second painting I did that Friday a couple of weeks ago at Saxe Point, I had some time left, not enough to get engaged in a larger piece but enough to roughly sketch something. As always, there are so many paintings to be painted in each location, I just moved my easel and I had something completely different, different light, different palette. I like how this one came together,  specially the  softness of the fog bank. I finished it in the studio where I added some touches of light.

Este es el segundo cuadro que pinté hace un par de semanas en Saxe Point. Tenía un poco de tiempo, no lo suficiente para empezar uno grande pero si para bosquejar algo. Como siempre, hay tantos cuadros para pintar en cada lugar! Simplemente moví mi atril un poco y estaba mirando a un cuadro completamente  diferente, diferentes colores, diferente luz. Me gusta cómo quedó este, especialmente la niebla. Lo terminé una vez de vuelta en el taller donde le agregué un par de luces.

I was going through some files and found this painting I had never posted, I painted it a couple of years ago and I really like the composition and colour scheme. It is nice  to see how one evolves and changes. I had cut some daisies from my garden and just set them up in a clear vase to paint them. Daisies always always remind me of my grandmother's house, "Nona" used to have them in her back yard, she could make anything grow and loved her plants. I need to plant some in the backyard of my new house and paint them again!

Estaba buscando en unos archivos y encontré este cuadro que no había publicado nunca acá. Lo pinté hace un par de años y me gusta la composición y los colores. Es bueno ver cómo uno evoluciona y cambia. Había cortado estas margaritas de mi jardín y las había puesto en un florero transparente para pintarlas. Las margaritas siempre me hacen acordar a mi abuela, "Nona" las tenía en su patio, ella podía hacía crecer cualquier cosa y amaba sus plantas. Tengo que plantar margaritas en mi nuevo jardín y las tengo que pintar de nuevo!

I am very behind with posting things here, which doesn't mean I haven't been painting.

This one is from a Friday painting with the Alfrescoes a couple of weeks ago. We had gone to Saxe Point and the light on the water and sky was absolutely beautiful but very quickly changing. So I decided to do a small quick one with the idea of doing a second larger one right after. I ended up spending a fair bit of time trying to catch the proper values which were of course changing all the time. I like how it turned out for a plein air sketch!

Estoy muy atrazada con compartir cuadros acá, lo que no quiere decir que no he estado pintando. Esta es un viernes al aire libre con los Alfrescoes hace un par de semanas. Fuimos a Saxe Point y la luz sobre el mar y el cielo era muy hermosa pero cambiaba muy rápidamente por lo que decidí hacer uno chiquito primero para capturar esa luz con la idea de hacerlo rápido y pasar a uno más grande enseguida. Al final, terminé tratando de pintar las tonalidades, luces y oscuros apropiados que cambiaban todo el tiempo. Me gusta cómo salió por ser un sketch al aire libre.

Y is for Yacht Race

I belong to several organizations and the Island Illustrators Society is one of them. Every year for the last few years they have had an alphabet show which is displayed at the different public libraries  in the city throughout the year. Last year I picked a few  letters and this is one of them. The subject was related to Victoria as a city and the different things that are unique to it. I chose to use Mixed Media, just having fun with old charts, watercolour paper and acrylic paint. I really enjoyed  working on this project!  Y is for Yacht race, referring to the Sailing Race that happens every year in the spring called Swiftsure.

Tomorrow from 10 to 12, I will be representing the IIS at the Nellie McClung Branch on Cedar Hill and Shelbourne where I will show people how to easily turn doodles into interesting designs. Stop by and visit if you have time.

Yo pertenezco a  varias organizaciones y los Ilustradores de la Isla es una de ellas. Todos estos últimos años, se organiza una muestra que rota por las distintas bibliotecas de la ciudad con el abecedario. El año pasado yo elegí 3 letras y esta es una de ellas. El tema era la ciudad de Victoria y las cosas características que tiene u ocurren acá. Elegí usar diferentes materiales como cartas de navegación viejas que tenía, papel de acuela y acrílicos.  Fue muy divertido trabajar en este proyecto. "Y" es para la regata llamada Swiftsure que ocurre todas las primaveras.

Mañana de 10 a 12 voy a estar representando a la Sociedad de Ilustradores de la Isla en la Biblioteca Nellie McLung en la esquina de Shelboure y Cedar Hill.  Voy a mostrar cómo se pueden transformar garabatos en diseños interesantes. Pasen a visitar si tienen tiempo.

Glass to Finish your Paintings

Today I wanted to share with you a trick I used when painting "Fall at the Lagoon", I realize now over a year ago!! I had prepared this post and was waiting for the artist I learnt this from, Julie Ford Oliver, to respond to my request to use her name and info when all hell broke loose in my life. I just saw that she actually responded to me the same day my son went in the hospital back in Nov 2014 so I never got to finish or publish it. (See here the post about it all) Today I was looking in my drafts and decided to finish it. Sidenote: My son's healing and recovery has been a miracle, he is leading the typical life of a 16 year old, with As and Bs in his report card....  other moms assure me the piles of clothes in his bedroom are NOT a sign of any kind of brain injury!..... Hard to remember everything we went through.... I am very thankful on a daily basis for the way things turned out. 

Anyway, Julie Ford Oliver is a wonderful artist from New Mexico whose work I follow on Facebook and through her blog. She is very generous with her teachings  and was very gracious to allow me to quote her. Take a look at her original blog post here where she uses a piece of glass to decide whether some  photo references would work as a painting. Thank you Julie, you are always an inspiration! My apologies for taking so long to publish this!

Hoy quiero mostrarles un truco que usé cuando pinté "Otoño en la Laguna" hace mas de un año!! Había preparado este post y estaba esperando permiso de la artista de la que lo aprendí, Julie Ford Oliver, cuando todo se puso patas para arriba en mi vida. Acabo de darme cuenta que ella me respondió el mismo día que mi hijo entró al hospital en Nov. 2014 por que nunca  terminé ni publiqué su post. Pueden ver acá todo lo que pasó. Hoy estaba viendo en mi carpeta de borradores y decidí terminarlo. Nota: La recuperación de mi hijo ha sido milagrosa, él por suerte lleva la vida de cualquier chico de 16 años con As y Bs en su libreta en la escuela.... otras mamás me aseguran que las pilas de ropa en su pieza  no tienen nada que ver con ningún tipo de daño cerebral!.... Es difícil recordar todo lo que pasamos.... Siento tanto agradecimiento a diario por como salió todo!

Julie Ford Oliver es una artista maravillosa de Nuevo Mexico. Yo sigo su trabajo por Facebook y por su blog. Ella es muy generosa con su talento y conocimiento y fue muy amable al permitirme que compatiera su técnica y nombre. Pueden ver acá su post original en el que ella explica como usa un pedazo de vidrio para decidir si ciertas fotos pueden ser buenos cuadros o no.  Gracias Julie, vos sos siempre una inspiración. Here is where I wanted to see what it would look like with a bigger water mass so I painted on a piece of glass on top of the painting. I should have added masking tape to the glass for safety... I hope you can see the glass.

Acá es donde quería ver cómo quedaría el cuadro si la masa de agua era mas grande. Pinté sobre el vidrio que estaba apoyado sobre el cuadro. De esa manera puedo ver si quiero hacer el cambio sin necesidad de cambiar el cuadro. Debería haber cubierto el borde con cinta de enmascarar por seguridad...  Espero que puedan ver el vidrio.

Here you can see the glass and by moving it on and off the painting I can decide if I want to commit to the change.
