This last day in Yellowknife was interesting... Deb and I wanted to paint as it was the farewell and we wanted to reach our target goal of number of paintings done but we were tired and we ended up driving around forever looking for a good spot. It was very cloudy so the light was quite flat, that + the tiredness made it difficult to find a place we liked.... Finally at about 2 pm after dilly-dallying the whole day, we started! We came back to this one spot very close to City Hall. There's a trail around the whole lake, Frame Lake that is, and we picked this one view from the probably hundreds of beautiful views available. It was great to see the smiling faces of people walking by, they broke into big smiles saying things like "Cool", or "Wow, you are painting!". I think lots of the neighbours walking their dogs were surprised at finding us standing in the bush painting by the trail. :)

Éste último día en Yellowknife fue muy interesante.... Deborah y yo queríamos pintar ya que era la despedida y queríamos también alcanzar nuestra meta de números de cuadros pintados pero estábamos cansadas y terminamos dando vueltas por toda la ciudad tratando de encontrar un lugar que nos gustara. Estaba muy nublado ese día así que no había mucha luz para pintar, eso más lo cansadas que estábamos hizo difícil encontrar el lugar adecuado… Finalmente alrededor de las 2:00 de la tarde después de dar vueltas todo el día, comenzamos! Volvimos a un lugar muy cerca de la municipalidad. Hay un sendero alrededor de todo el lago, el Lago Frame, y elegimos esta vista en particular de las posibles cientos de vistas hermosas que debe haber. Fue muy divertido ver las caras sonrientes de la gente que pasaba caminando, apenas nos veían, decían con una sonrisa "Qué Bueno" o "Wow, están pintando! Creo que los vecinos que habían sacado a los perros a caminar estaban sorprendidos de encontrarnos paradas al costado del sendero pintando!!

As we were on Cabin Island on Ennadai Lake for the whole day and there was so much to paint I actually just moved the easel about 10 feet, faced a different direction and set out to work again after finishing this painting and sharing a lovely lunch on the beach. 

I tried again doing 2 different paintings at the same time, trying out 2 different compositions. In this case, I wanted to see it looked with and without the sky portion and a square versus a rectangular version. When I say I do them at the same time, they are both up on the easel, one above the other, I sketch and do the block in for both of them and then I set out to work on one, to move on to the other one as I am pretty much finished with the first one. I am really enjoying these explorations of the same subject in different and I can hardly wait to have time back in the studio to keep diving.

One of the things that will always stand out for me from this day was that while I was painting, I actually heard silence for a long time. It's something that we don't experience very often and I have been trying to think whether I had heard it ever before. Typically while I'm painting, there's a breeze, the rustle of leaves, people close by talking, boats going by, etc. This particular day was eerily quiet, at one point when I actually noticed it, it felt as if I was in a vacuum. There was NOTHING, no sound at all for a while. It was a special day for sure.

Como estuvimos en la Isla Cabaña en el Lago Ennadai el día completo y había tanto para pintar simplemente moví mi atril unos metros después de terminar este cuadro, lo puse en otra dirección y empecé a trabajar de nuevo después de compartir un hermoso almuerzo en la playa. Traté de nuevo de hacer dos cuadros diferentes el mismo tiempo, tratando dos composiciones diferentes. En este caso quería ver cómo quedaba con o sin cielo y quería también ver la versión cuadrada o rectangular. Cuando digo que los hago al mismo tiempo, pongo los dos paneles en el atril, uno arriba de otro, hago el dibujo y bloqueo inicial para los dos y después empiezo a trabajar en uno, continuando con el segundo una vez que que terminado el primero. Estoy realmente disfrutando mucho de estos exploraciones del mismo tema en formas diferentes y tengo muchas ganas de volver al taller para seguir cone estos procesos  y series.

Una de las cosas que siempre voy a recordar de este día que mientras estaba pintando, escuché el sonido del silencio durante un largo tiempo. Es algo que no vivimos muy a menudo con tanto ruido alredor todo el tiempo. Estaba tratando de pensar si alguna vez he escuchado un silencio total como el de ese día. Típicamente hay aunque sea una brisa, el ruido de las hojas, gente cerca hablando, pájaros, etc. Este día en particular había silencio puro, era como si yo hubiera estado. No había nada, ningún tipo de sonido durante un largo rato. Fue un día muy especial.

I think this set is my favourite of the whole 30 days and for sure from the tip to Arctic Haven. From today on, several times I tried doing things differently, something more like what I was doing in the studio at the beginning of the challenge. Remember I mentioned I was trying different croppings of the same thing? Well, that's what I did here, I knew I had enough time to do a couple of paintings so I set up 2 canvases and did them almost simultaneously. I wanted to try out different  formats, similar compositions, more of that, less of  something else. You get the picture.....

In this case I was totally fascinated (as I was for most of the trip) with the Fall colours of this landscape. We had gone to Apocalypse Island.... That name was given to the island by  a couple of our guides: when they went to the island for the fist time they liked it so much  they decided this would be a pretty good place to come and hide if there ever was an apocalypse (I hear they were talking about  a zombie invasion at the time, haha,.... anyway, ...They called the beach Paradise Island and it certainly was like paradise that day!
I wanted to try a horizontal and a square format and include some of the lake behind in one of them. So I did! I like them both, I would maybe combine elements from both in the future to make a larger piece.

Estos dos cuadros son mis favoritos de los 30 días creo y  del viaje al ártico. A partir de este momento empecé a trabajar de forma diferente y tiene que ver con cómo ya estaba pintando en el taller al comienzo del desafío. Recuerdan que les había dicho que estaba tratando de hacer distintas composiciones de la misma cosa? Bueno, eso es lo que empecé hacer acá. Como yo sabía que tenía suficiente tiempo para hacer un padre un par de cuadros, puse dos lienzos y los hice al mismo tiempo. Trataba de probar diferentes formatos, composiciones similares pero distintas,  más de esto, menos de lo otro… Se dan cuenta…
En este caso, estaba totalmente fascinada, como estuve la mayor parte del tiempo, con los colores del otoño de este paisaje. Este día habíamos ido a una isla que se llama Isla Apocalipsis, ese nombre vino de que un par de guías , se enamoraron de esta isla cuando fueron por primera vez (y  de acuerdo lo que me contaron estaban hablando de una invasión de zombies y cosas así, ja ja)  Concluyeron con que este sería el lugar ideal para esconderse si en algún momento había un apocalipsis… Llamaron a la playa a la que llegamos la playa del paraíso.  Y la verdad es que ese día fue como estar en el paraíso…
Quería probar un formato horizontal y uno cuadrado e incluir un poco de lago que había detrás en uno de ellos, y eso fue lo que hice. Me gustan los dos cuadros, tal vez  combine elementos de los dos en el futuro para hacer una pieza más grande

This was the second painting of the day in Old Town in Yellowknife,. For this one, my self-imposed assignment was to stay with the big brush. I had been working with brushes that were too small for my liking and everything was getting fiddly for me.  It was all about capturing the rhythm and colours of the rock formations. I stopped as soon as didn't know what else to do to it and I am glad I did. I am somewhat pleased with it, will re-evaluate once back in the studio  :) A dog stopped to visit and pushed the painting on the ground. That's the spots you can see on the sky, dirt..... I was lucky it didn't get totally ruined,  I'll just  wipe it off once the painting is completely dry and touch up if necessary. The joys of plein air.....you never know what you will encounter!

Este es el segundo cuadro del día en Pueblo Viejo en Yellowknife.  Me impuse la obligación de usar un pincel grande para  la mayoría del cuadro ya que había estado usando pinceles demasiados chiquitos y estaba entrando en demasiados detalles muy pronto para mi gusto. La meta era capturar el ritmo y los colores de la roca. Paré una vez que no sabía que mas hacer y me alegro de haber echo eso. Estoy bastante conforme con el resultado.... re-evaluaremos  una vez de regreso. :) Un perro pasó a visitar y me empujó el cuadro que estaba apoyado sobre una piedra, por eso se ven manchas en el cielo que es tierra, una vez que este bien seco voy a sacárselo y retocar si hace falta. Tuve suerte de que no se arruinara por completo.... el placer de la pintura al aire libre  .... uno nunca sabe lo que se va a encontrar!

I started this painting at the Moss St. Paint-In back in May and hadn't been able to get back to it.  I had completely blocked it in but hadn't gone any further. I usually paint Alla Prima which means wet into wet oil paint, done all in one sitting or as much of it as possible in the same session. As I had never stopped and let it dry at this block-in stage, I was experimenting in how to proceed. I ended up oiling the whole surface lightly and then just continuing as if I had never stopped with my opaque colours as I usually do. So it worked out differently in that the block in colours didn't mix as much with the second layer while wet but there is still lots of that underpainting showing through which I like.  I love love some of the colours that happened there, the golds and mauves especially. I'll probably try this one again following the same vertical format of the previous ones. It was a good exercise, I'll probably go back into this one as well to change some of the design I am not happy with....but for today..... it's done. :)

Comencé este cuadro en la Pintada de Moss Street este Mayo pasado y no había podido terminarlo. Había bloqueado los colores iniciales completamente pero no había podido hacer más que eso. Normalmente pinto "Alla Prima", que quiere  aplicar el oleo sin que se seque entre capas, se hace todo en una en un sola sesión. De esta manera los colores se mezclan mientras el óleo está todavía húmedo. Como nunca  había parado en esta etapa del bloque inicial, tuve que experimentar con cómo proseguir. Terminé aplicando una capa muy fina de aceite de nuez (que es lo que yo uso para afinar el óleo) y aplicando la capa siguiente de colores opacos como hago simple. El resultado fue que los colores de las dos capas no se mezclaron tanto pero si se alcanza a ver todavía los colores de la primera capa.  Me encantaron los colores amarillos, dorados y lilas que se formaron en esta pieza. Probablemente pruebe este en otro formato como he echo estos días pasados. Fue un buen ejercicio, probablemente vuelva a este cuadro mas a delante y corrija ciertos elementos del diseño del cuadro  que no me satisface del todo... pero por hoy, está lista. :)

After getting back home to the studio I was interested in doing a few paintings with those gorgeous colours I fell in love with in Mexico and Hawaii but following a bit of different approach from the one I normally use, just to play and see if I liked it better. One of the traditional approaches to oils is to cover the whole canvas or panel very thinly with one colour which becomes the base layer,  and in many cases it peeks through  the whole painting here and there when it is not 100% covered. This is what I love that about this approach, it gives the painting unity and a general feel.  This is how I learned when I first started with oils and did it that way for quite a while. Later on I took a workshop where I learned a different approach: You apply an underpainting of many different transparent colours, those colours depend on what you are painting and this is followed by opaque colours on top. Again, lots of the underpaiting still shows in the final product. I liked this way because I was able to achieve brighter cleaner colours as many times the white from the canvas/panel is "shines" through the bottom transparent colours. The previous landscapes and seascapes I have been showing you these past weeks have been done using this last method and "Tropical memories" today was done using the traditional way...... Which one do you prefer???
In the end, in this case, this exercise didn't help me make up my mind..... I liked both ways..... :)

 Después de volver y empezar a trabajar en el taller, estaba muy interesada en hacer unos cuantos cuadros usando esos colores hermosísimos de los que me enamoré cuando estaba en México y en Hawai pero quería hacer un par de experimentos al aplicar los óleos, simplemente para jugar y ver si me gustaba más . Una de las formas tradicionales de usar los óleos es primero cubrir toda la superficie del lienzo o panel con una capa muy fina de un color que se transforma en la base,  en muchos casos este color aparece en distintos lugares del cuadro cuando no se cubre  el 100%. Esto es lo que más me gusta de este método, ya que le da  al cuadro mucha uniformidad. Éste fue la forma en que yo aprendí a usar los óleos y lo hice así durante bastante tiempo. Más adelante tomé un curso en el qie aprendí una  forma diferente: se aplica una base con muchos colores diferentes transparentes, la eleccioón de colores depende de lo que se está pintando y esa capa se sigue con colores opacos encima. Como en el caso anterior, muchas partes de la base se pueden ver en el cuadro si no se cubren el 100% . La razón por la que me gusta este método es porque puedo lograr  colores más limpios y brillantes.  Todos los paisajes que le estado mostrando últimamente han sido pintados utilizando este último método y el de hoy es utilizando el método tradicional … Cuál prefieren? Al final, en este caso, este ejercicio no me ayudó a decidirme cuál me gusta más… Me gusta de las dos formas… :)

This is one of my favourite paintings from the Hawaii series. The ocean was quite choppy that day and I was playing with the colours more than anything when at the very end a sailboat showed up and I just had to put it in! Hope you like it!

Another beach day in Hawaii.... This was a gorgeous beach in South Maui, I wouldn't mind going back there of course :)   I am not much of a sun person so when we go to the beach it's all about being able to have some shade as well as sun, those umbrellas do the trick very nicely.  It's interesting for me to see how the first few paintings in a new location are all about getting acquainted with the local colours and shapes which are different everywhere you go.  I had fun putting the umbrellas in there and just suggestions of shapes for chairs, people and just stuff at the beach. The rocks in lots of places in Hawaii have a very special colour, they are very black/purple/brown..... lava that a long time ago came into the ocean..... crazy to think that new rocks and land are being formed all the time in the big island as the volcano keeps erupting.

Otro día de playa en Hawai.  Esta es una playa hermosísima en el sur de Maui, cómo me gustaría estar ahí de nuevo por supuesto. A mí no me gusta mucho el sol así es que cuando vamos a la playa siempre se trata de encontrar un poco de sombra  para poder refugiarnos y esas sombrillas funcionan muy bien. Es muy interesante para mí ver cómo los primeros cuadros en un lugar nuevo se tratan mas que nada de familiarizarse con los colores y las formas locales que son diferentes en todos lados. Me encantó poner las sombrillas y las sugerencias de formas para representar sillas, gente y cosas en la playa. Las rocas en muchos lugares de Hawai tienen  este color muy especial que es muy negro, morado, marrón… Pensar que es lava que hace mucho tiempo entro al océano… Es increíble pensar que en la isla grande de Hawai hay rocas y tierra nueva  que se continúa formando todo el tiempo ya que el volcán continúa en erupción. 

Espero que tengan un muy buen fin de semana, me voy a pintar ahora!

As I mentioned yesterday, I spent the day the Art Gallery House Tour.and my home for the day was one of the house boats at Westbay Marina . I had a GREAT time, met soooo many people and this is what I painted. I cleaned it up a bit today and again, even though I know it can still have so many corrections, I want to leave it as a plein air study and maintain the original excitement and observations of the day. This was the view from the top deck on the 3rd floor from where we had well over 180 degrees views of the marina and Esquimalt-downtown waterfront all the way to the Cruise terminal. I just focused on a tiny little bit of the view.
Thank you so much to all the volunteers that made this day possible and for the invitation to participate in the event.Thank you so much to all that stopped by to chat and express how much they liked my work  and a very special thanks to Barbara and Dennis, the owners of the house for opening their home so we could all have a small taste of what life on the water may be and enjoy the fantastic views from every room of the house!!

Como les conté ayer, pasé el día en Tour de Casas y mi "hogar" por el día de ayer fue una de las casas flotantes en la Marina Westbay. La pasé muy muy bien, conocí muchísima gente y esto es lo que pinté. Hoy ya en el taller la he "limpiado" un poquito.... como también les dije antes, sé que le hacen falta muchas correcciones pero quiero dejarlo como un bosquejo al aire libre y mantener el entusiasmo y las observaciones del día sin completamente cambiar el cuadro. Esta era la vista desde  la terraza del 3er piso desde la que había mas de 180 grados de vista de la marina hasta el centro de Victoria. Yo simplemente enfoqué un pedacito chiquito de toda esa vista increíble.
Muchísimas gracias a todos los voluntarios que hicieron este día posible y por la invitación a participar en este evento. Muchísimas gracias también a todos los que pararon a conversar y expresaron cuanto disfrutaron de mi trabajo. Especialmente muchas gracias a Barbara y Dennis, los dueños de la casa por habernos abierto sus puertas para que nosotros pudiéramos tener un pantallazo de lo que es la vida en el agua y a la vez disfrutar de las fantásticas vistas desde cada habitación de la casa!!

 On Friday I went painting with the Alfrescoes after a long time of not being there, it was so nice to see many friendly faces :) We went to Westbay Marina in Esquimalt and the reflections early when we got there were just incredible! I took many photos for hopefully future paintings. The major challenge I had was the wind that picked up and got rid of the crystal clear reflections that attracted me to paint this scene in the first place. I am glad I had taken a photo at the beginning and was able to go back into it once back in the studio. It was for sure a matter of getting rid of the many marks I had added when it was windier.
The fact that we went to that marina on Friday was very timely because I have been invited to participate in this year's Art Gallery House Tour. Every year, a few special home in Victoria are picked and people can go and visit them.  There are artists in each of these homes. My "home" for today, Sunday Sep 11,   is a float home in this Marina actually. I'll be at #5 - 453 Head St in Esquimalt. Get a ticket, come down and visit this very special home. I was there on Friday and wow! They have the most amazing  views!

El viernes fui a pintar con los Alfrescoes después de no haber ido por bastante tiempo, fue tan bueno ver muchas caras sonrientes! Fuimos a la Marina Westbay en Esquimalt y los reflejos en el agua  temprano cuando llegamos eran increíbles! Tomé bastantes fotos para tal vez hacer cuadros en el futuro.  El mayor problema que tuve fue el viento que después de un rato se levantó y borró totalmente los reflejos perfectos que era lo que primero me había atraído de pintar esta escena. Me alegro de haber tomado una foto al comienzo y pude retocar este cuadro y corregirlo un poco una vez que volví a casa. Se trató principalmente de sacar muchas pinceladas que había agregado cuando se levantó el viento. El hecho de que fuimos a esa marina fue bastante oportuno porque me han invitado a participar en el Tour de Casas de este año organizado por la Galería de Arte de Victoria. Todos los años se eligen unos pocos hogares especiales en Victoria y la gente puede ir a visitarlos. Hay artistas en cada una de estas casas. Mi "casa" hoy, Domingo 11 de Septiembre, es una casa flotante en la marina. Voy a estar en  #5 - 453 Head St in Esquimalt. Vengan, compren una entrada y pasen a visitar esta casa muy especial. Estuve allí el viernes y wow!, tienen vistas increíbles por todos lados!

This is going back to May when I went with the Alfrescoes to Tower Point in Metchosin to paint on beautiful Friday morning. I had never actually paintied in that gorgeous park and found many different paintings to be done, I will for sure be back!
Even though Fall is here (amazing how the weather this first week of September!) I am still calling it Spring is in the Air" because that's definitely the way it felt when I painted it.....

Con este volvemos a Mayo cuando fui a pintar este hermoso Viernes a la mañana con los Alfrescoes  a Tower Point en Metchosin. Nunca había pintado en este parque  y me gustó tanto que seguro voy a volver ya que encontré muchos cuadros  para pintar en el futuro! A pesar de que ya estamos en el Otoño (increíble cómo cambio el tiempo esta primera semana de Septiembre!), le puse el nombre de "La Primavera se Siente en el Aire" porque así fue cómo se sentía ese día cuando lo pinté....
Que disfruten el día de hoy!!

#2 of 30: Despite All Odds

While in Tahoe, we stayed in a place called Squaw Creek  in the Olympic Valley which is where the 1960 Winter Olympics were held. It has a very nice feeling with tons and tons of trails to explore in the summer. There's a gondola that goes up to the mountain top from where there are incredible vistas and  a  fair bit to do there.  There's a also a trail that takes you up which we wanted to hike but as it is quite difficult in some parts, we didn't have enough time to do this time.  This is called the Shirley Canyon Trail,  we did hike up to the waterfall where I found these rocks (and many other paintings!),  supposedly they are gorgeous covered in water but it is very dry and there was no water at all! Someone I talked to while painting said a month ago I would have been sprayed where I was standing and water almost to my feet. You could have not guessed it from what I saw. It never ceases to amaze me how these little trees grow literally in between the cracks, it always looks like they could never survive.....Again, this one needs a bit of TLC back in the studio but it is very close....

En mi estadía en Tahoe, paramos en un lugar que se llama el Squaw Creek en el Valle Olímpico que es donde se hicieron las Olimpíadas de Invierno de 1960. Es una villa muy hermosa con muchos senderos para explorar en el verano.  Hay una góndola que va hasta la punta de la montaña, y hay también un sendero que te lleva ahí, teníamos intenciones de escalarlo pero como es bastante lejos  no tuvimos tiempo esta vez. Este sendero se llama el Sendero del Cañón Shirley y si escalamos un un tramo donde encontré muchos cuadros distintos para pintar. Elegí estas rocas que supuestamente son una catarata pero como está todo tan seco no había nada de agua! Una persona que paró a  hablar conmigo mientras yo pintaba me dijo que hace un mes yo hubiera estado mojada dónde estába parada y con agua casi hasta mis pies. Uno nunca se podría creer eso con lo que yo ví!  Siempre me maravilla como estos pequeños árboles crecen literalmente entre las piedras, parece imposible que puedan sobrevivir… De nuevo, este necesita un poquito de trabajo en el taller pero le falta poco...

UNFINISHED - SIN TERMINAR

As I mentioned in my last post, I have been in Lake Tahoe for a few days now and I have used some of that time for painting outdoors,  have been exploring and I love the scenery!.... This painting was done en plein air by the Truckee River just a few minutes from where I am staying. I drove along this river several times and the banks with yellowy greeny grasses called me right away so that was my first choice for this trip. Got stung by a wasp half way and it is not fun at all.... but I guess it's one of the perils of plein air painting, that was  a first for me while painting. Apparently wasps are so bad this year in this area that some restaurants don't even serve food outdoors!
Still need to take it back to the studio and work on it a bit more, there are several unresolved areas, I ran out of time (or patience, or both) :)

Como les conté en mi último post, hace varios días que estoy en el Lago Tahoe y he aprovechado para pintar y explorar y la verdad es que me encanta este paisaje… Éste cuadro lo hice al aire libre en las orillas del Río Truckee que está a unos minutos de donde estoy parando. Pasé manejando al lado de este río varias veces y esas  orillas llenas de pastos verdes y amarillos me llamaron la atención en el acto así que esa fue mi primera elección para este viaje. Me picó una avispa a mitad del cuadro y no fue muy divertido....  Pero supongo que es uno de los peligros de la pintura al aire libre, esa fue la primera vez para mí mientras pinto. Parece que las avispas están tan malas este año en esta zona que algunos restaurantes ni siquiera sirven comida afuera. Éste cuando está sin terminar, todavía necesito llevarlo al taller y ponerle un poco más de tiempo, hay varias áreas que no están resueltas,  se me acabó el tiempo (o la paciencia o los dos) :)

Last week I went with the Al Frescoes to paint again at Island View Beach. The day was absolutely gorgeous, no wind, sunshine and lots of painters around. There were many options to paint that day and I decided to try this view  with the path, logs and some water.  I was worried about the whole foreground but int he end I kept it loose and I am quite pleased with the way it turned out. I am still looking at it and deciding whether I will make a couple of changes or not. Getting ready to go paint again this morning so stay tuned. And speaking of getting ready I am almost there for the studio tour happening this weekend.
Again, this piece,  as well as many other paintings,  will be available at the Studio Tour I am part of this coming up Sat & Sun, May 7 & 8, 11 to 4 pm.   I am opening my home and studio to the public so people can come and visit during the Cadboro Bay-Gordon Head Studio Tour! La semana pasada fui con los  AlFrescoes a pintar a Island View Beach de nuevo. El día estuvo absolutamente hermoso, sin viento, con sol y muchos pintores por todos lados. Había varias opciones para pintar ese día y decidí tratar esta vista del caminito, los troncos y un poco de mar. Estaba un poco preocupada con todo el primer plano pero lo dejé sin detalles y estoy bastante contenta con cómo me salió. Como siempre,  sigo evaluando si le voy a hacer algunos cambios o no.  Me estoy preparando para ir a pintar de nuevo esta mañana,  les muestro la semana que viene. Y hablando de prepararme estoy casi lista ya para el tour de talleres este fin de semana.
Como les dije antes, este cuadro,  como muchos otros, va a estar disponible en el tour de talleres del que soy parte este sábado y domingo 7 y 8 de mayo de 11:00 a 4:00 de la tarde. Estoy abriendo mi casa y mi taller al público para que la gente pueda venir y visitar durante el  Cadboro Bay-Gordon Head Studio Tour. Fíjense en el link, soy la número 6 en el mapa. 3876A Finnerty Rd. es mi dirección,  mi casa es la tercera desde la calle.  Mi caminito para la casa es largo... I don't know why I am having such a hard time writing on the blog.... the good thing is that I am still creating and painting, just not sharing....

This is a commission I had a while back and I am very pleased with how it turned out. Michelle is friend who has gone through quite a bit in the last while. She wanted to have some of my art in her home and chose a piece similar to this one which was sold. I had been wanting to paint it again in oils this time, the previous one was acrylics, fortunately she was very pleased with it. I helped her hang it in her home and as soon as they were up (she got 2 of my paintings :) she said "Oh , Happiness" and that's how the name for the painting came. I wish you Michelle a lot of happiness in the coming years! Thank you for choosing to have my art in your home, I am touched!

Interestingly enough, this inspiration and reference for this piece has changed dramatically, those trees are no longer there, they have been cut in order for the planned development to go ahead. I drove that road for 5 years and that sight took my breath away every time I saw it, it was the old site for Coast Collective, my old job. Gorgeous spot, I trust new trees will replace these ones and one day they will be just as beautiful!

La verdad es que no sé por qué me está costando tanto escribir en el blog… Lo bueno es que sigo creando y pintando, simplemente no estoy compartiendo…

Este es un pedido que alguien me había echo hace un tiempo y estoy muy contenta con el resultado. Michelle es una amiga que ha tenido malos momentos estos últimos tiempos. Ella quería tener un cuadro mío en su hogar y eligió uno similar a uno que yo ya había vendido. Lo bueno es que yo tenía intenciones de pintarlo de nuevo pero en óleos esta vez, el anterior era en acrílico, y por suerte, a ella le gustó mucho. La ayudé a colgarlo en su hogar y apenas terminamos, ella dijo "Oh, Qué felicidad" y así es como surgió el nombre a este cuadro.  Michelle,  te deseo mucha felicidad en los próximos años,  gracias por elegir tener mi arte en tu casa! Es un honor!

De forma interesante, la inspiración y referencia para este cuadro ha cambiado dramáticamente, esos árboles ya no están, los han cortado para comenzar con la construcción de departamentos  que estaba planeada. Yo pasé por esa calle durante cinco años ya que es la antigua ubicación de Coast Collective, mi antiguo trabajo,  y admiré y disfruté esta vista cada otoño. Es un lugar muy bello, seguro que van a plantar nuevos árboles en lugar de los viejos y algún día van hacer tan hermosos como estos.

Day 11 of 30: Hollyhocks

This  past summer I took a photo of these beautiful hollyhocks from my daughter's boss' garden. I have never painted them nor have I had them in my garden. Well.... today this is changing, I am painting them and I will make sure I have some  growing in my yard next summer! Love the shapes of the flowers and the buds growing on the stocks!!

After the first brush-stroke, the canvas assumes a life of its own; at this point, you become both governor and spectator to your own event. (Anonymous)

Este verano  saqué una foto de estas hermosas  "malvas" (no sé si esta es la traducción exacta, en Argentina yo no había visto estas plantas)  que estaban en el jardín de la casa del jefe de mi hija. Nunca había pintado estas flores ni tampoco las he tenido en mi jardín, bueno, hoy las cosas cambian. Las estoy pintando y voy a plantar seguro algunas en mi jardín para tener flores este vearno! Me encantan la forma de la flor y  los pimpollos que crecen en el tallo.

Después de la primera pincelada, el lienzo asume vida propia; entonces tú te conviertes

Fall at Goldstream

I am loving all the colours around, really enjoying Fall this year. This took me to look in my photo files from previous years and I found this one I hadn't painted. It's Goldstream Park, a great place to visit right now with the Salmon Run happening. (Every year, salmon come back to spawn to exactly the same spot in in the river they were born after being in the ocean for years, nature never ceases to amaze me!) Hopefully I get there to paint on plein-air before the next wind storm!

Estoy disfrutando intensamente los colores del otoño este año lo que me inspiró a mirar mis archivos de fotos y buscar esta foto que no había pintado. Es el el Parque Goldstream, un lugar hermoso para visitar en este momento  con los colores y la "corrida del salmón" (todos los años los salmones vuelven al mismo lugar en el río en que nacieron  que nacieron después de pasar varios años en el mar, increíble lo que es la naturaleza!). Ojalá que alcance a ir a pintar a este parque antes de la próxima tormenta de viento!

The Golden Hour & Wonderful Workshop

It's been a while since my last post but there is just too much stuff happening! (all good stuff)  I will get organized to post regularly (hopefully!)


Last week I attended an excellent workshop, among the best for me.  I went down to Costa Mesa, California (close to Newport Beach) and had a great time with Dreama Tolle Perry and a group of very talented ladies from different parts of the United States. I have admired Dreama's work quietly for the last couple of years and every single time a post from her came into my Feedly, my heart would just skip looking at the luscious colour and excitement in her paintings. I would invariably and immediately have a smile on my face. THAT is why I signed up and flew down to take it. Of course, I was not disappointed. Her system clicked with me at once and now a few days later realize that this workshop is exactly what I have been looking for these last few months. Lately, I have been happily dissatisfied with my work and have been searching for the direction I want to go into. I knew I wanted more colour in my work and now I have  a way (I hope). I am very excited to go hide in my studio and play with my new found knowledge. Interesting how things always happen for a reason and timing is everything isn't it? I may not have been ready for  it last year maybe and a third workshop as well space available came up at the right time.  Thank you Dreama!

"The Golden Hour" was my painting done on the last day of the workshop when we worked from our own reference material. I am very pleased with it.  The other 2 paintings were done on days 1 and 2 of the workshop, everyone using the same reference material, a photo provided by Dreama. :)

Hace bastante que no escribo, es que  están pasando demasiadas cosas! (todas buenas). Me voy a organizar para escribir mas a menudo (espero).

La semana pasada tomé un curso excelente, uno de los mejores para mí. Fui a Costa Mesa, California, muy cerquita de Newport Beach y la pasé bárbaro con Dreama Tolle Perry y un grupo de mujeres muy talentosas de distintas partes de Estados Unidos. He admirado el arte de Dreama desde hace 2 años mas o menos. Cada vez que uno de sus posts me entra en el Feedly, se me acelera el corazón mirando el delicioso colour y energía en sus pinturas. Siempre en el acto tengo una sonrisa en la cara y es exactamente por eso que fuí a tomar  un curso con ella. Por supuesto, no me desilucioné. Su sistema me funcionó en el acto y hoy, unos días despué de haber terminado el curso, me doy cuenta que es exactamente eso lo que hace varios meses vengo buscando. Ultimamente he estado felizmente desconforme con mi trabajo y he estado buscando una nueva dirección para mi. Sabía que quería mas color en mi arte y ahora tengo la forma de hacerlo (espero). Estoy muy entusiasmada con encerrarme en mi taller y jugar con todo el conocimiento nuevo que tengo. Es interesante como las cosas siempre funcionan de cierta forma y en determinado momento por razones especiales y desconocidas. Tal vez el año pasado  no hubiera estado lista para recibir lo que se enseñó en el curso. Un tercer curso se agregó y había espacio esta vez.   Gracias Dreama!

"La Hora de Oro" fue un cuadro echo el úlimo día del curso cuando trabajamos de nuestras propias fotos de referencia. Estoy muy conteta con los resultados. Los otros 2 cuadros fueron echos en el primer y segundo día, todos usamos las mismas fotos, suministradas por Dreama. :)
