Let’s see if I can get back with the program, it seems I needed a little break from social media!! So we are going back to summer with this post. This one day last August we tried fishing for halibut in a bank in the middle of Queen Charlotte Strait. Actually, let’s correct that: my husband tried fishing, I painted! It was a very quiet morning, the water was very still and we could hear whales in the distance, every now and then we would hear their puffs from them surfacing to breathe. We looked and looked but they were not close enough to see them. It’s was a beautiful day anyway!
This is the painting created that day. I love the colours that happened.... I may have to do a larger version of this one. I called it Waiting as that is what we were doing: Waiting for the whales to get closer, for the fish to bait and for me to finish the painting!!

Veamos si puedo volver a la rutina, parece que me hacía falta una vacación de Instagram y Facebook. Con este post volvemos al verano:?este día en particular en agosto, tratamos de pescar, mejor dicho, mi esposo trató de pescar y yo pinté! Era una mañana muy tranquila, el mar estaba muy calmo y podíamos escuchar ballenas a la distancia, a cada rato se sentían cuando salían a respirar. Miramos y miramos pero no estaban tan cerca como para verlas. Lo mismo, fue hermoso!
Éste es el cuadro que pinté ese día. Me encantan los colores que aparecieron, tal vez tenga que hacer una versión grande. La titulé Esperando, ya que estábamos esperando que las ballenas se acercaran, que los pescados picaran y que yo terminara este cuadro!!

I love working in many different sizes. I like small pieces because I am able to finish a piece in a relatively short period of time. They also help me figure out elements and have also become the jumping point sometimes for bigger works. Last February I painted several boats and as I was very happy with what happened with a few of them, I decided to go a bit bigger and combine them into this bigger one. You can see this painting as well as several other ones at South Shore Gallery in Sooke. It's an 18x24 Oil on Canvas called Island Racing.

Me gusta trabajar en distintos tamaños. Me gustan las piezas pequeñas porque muchas veces puedo terminar un cuadro en un periodo de tiempo relativamente corto. También me ayudan a decidir qué hacer con distintos elementos y muchas veces se transforman en estudios para trabajos más grandes. Este febrero pasado, pinté varios barcos y veleros y como estaba contenta con lo que pasó en algunos de sus cuadros decidí combinarlos y pintar este más grande. Pueden ver este cuadro en South Shore Gallery en Sooke. Es un óleo de 46x61cm que se llama Carreras de la Isla.

"Sitting in the Morning Sun" was painted this summer during our sailing trip in August. As you may remember, my husband and I spend a month on our sailboat cruising around the Broughtons and Desolation Sound. Many nights, we would drop anchor in quiet bays without any other boats in sight. These coves are usually small and protected with beautiful sights to paint. Many times, the views would be quite closed in, and in the end, I ended up focusing on small, intimate views of several points or islets which didn't include any part of the sky which was different form the landscapes I usually paint. Can you guess what we were listening to as I painted??? Love that song!!

Pinté "Sentados al Sol de la Mañana" este verano durante nuestro viaje en el velero en agosto. Como pueden recordar tal vez, mi esposo y yo pasamos un mes navegando por las Broughtons y Desolation Sound. Muchas noches tirábamos el ancla en bahías muy tranquilas en las que no había ningún otro velero. Éstas bahías son normalmente muy pequeñas y protegidas con vistas hermosas para pintar. Muchas veces estas vistas eran bastante cerradas y al final terminé enfocándome en vistas muy íntimas de islotes sin incluir nada de cielo. Pueden adivinar qué canción estaba escuchando mientras pintaba? Me encanta esa canción!

As you may know, we spend a lot of time on the water especially in the summer. We get to enjoy weekends or extended times on our sailboat, we typically drop anchor and spend the night in quiet bays. When the activity of the day starts slowing down, the day is over, and everybody gets tucked in for the night, you get to see cosy views like this one. I wonder, are they playing cards inside? Board games, reading? Times like these are usually "unconnected" times, with no or very limited Internet access. That's what we usually do, marathon board games, cards championships that last the whole trip and create good memories. "Evening on the water" is an 8x8, oil on canvas and it's available at South Shore Gallery in Sooke.

Como ya tal vez sepan, nosotros pasamos mucho tiempo sobre el agua, especialmente en los veranos. Disfrutamos de fines de semana o vacaciones más largas en nuestro velero, normalmente bajamos el ancla y pasamos la noche en bahías muy tranquilas. Cuando se acaba la actividad del día, se empieza hacer de noche y todos y se encienden las luces, se ven muchas vistas como esta. Yo me pregunto, estarán jugando a las cartas o a juegos de mesa, tal vez leyendo? Esto son tiempos "desconectados", con muy poca o nada de Internet. Eso es lo que hacemos nosotros normalmente, jugamos juegos de mesa o hacemos campeonatos de cartas que a veces duran el viaje completo y creamos así muchos buenos recuerdos. "Atardecer en el Agua" es un óleo de 20×20 cm y está disponible en la Galería South Shore en Sooke.

This is a very familiar sight for us living in the Pacific Northwest.... I didn't grow up by the ocean, my hometown of Cordoba is actually around 1000 km either way to the Pacific or the Atlantic. While the hills and farmland typical of my area are gorgeous, I never get tired of the ocean sights, just love  them!

Esta es una vista muy familiar para los que vivimos en el Pacifico del NorOeste.... No crecí cerca del mar, mi ciudad natal de Córdoba está a unos 1000km del mar  ya sea hacia el Pacifico o hacia el Atlántico. Si bien las montañas y tierras de cultivo de mi zona tienen su gran atractivo y son hermosas, no me canso de las vistas de mar, me encantan!!

I started this painting with the idea of doing a loose sky and  play with the palette knife and while I did start with the knife, I soon abandoned it in favour of the large bushes. I may need to clean it up a bit but I am done with it for now as I am just wrecking things instead of improving anything. So, off to the observation rack it goes!

Comencé este cuadrito con la intencion de hacer un cielo con la cuchilla y sí empecé usandola pero enseguida la abandoné para seguir con pinceles. Tal vez tenga que cambiar algunas cosas pero pr ahora he terrminado ya que en lugar de mejorar, lo empeoro asi es que pasa al estante en observación!

When we go for several days or weeks at a time on the sailboat, we typically go from one anchorage to the next one, we may stay on the same spot for several days depending on how exploring there is to do in each place. From far away,  it seems that there's not much to see but once you start getting closer to shore you discover there are all sorts of protected coves everywhere, like behind small islands that can only be found once you are closer to them. Of course it can all be  seen on the charts,  we have wonderful navigation systems now both on the boat as well as Ipads and phones but in the olden days.... that is just 10 years ago for us, haha, it was all with just paper charts which I loved!

Cuando vamos en el velero durante días o semanas normalmente vamos de un anclaje al otro, tal vez nos quedamos en el mismo lugar varios días dependiendo de todo lo que haya para explorar en ese lugar. Desde lejos, muchas veces parece que no hay mucho para ver y visitar pero una vez que nos acercamos a la costa  descubrimos muchas ensenadas protegidas, detrás de islotes por ejemplo. Por supuesto que se pueden ver ver en los mapas, tenemos ahora sistemas de navegación maravillosos en el velero como así también en nuestros iPad y teléfonos pero en los viejos días… hace sólo unos  unos 10 años para nosotros, era todo con cartas de navegación de papel que me encantaban!

There are so many different rock formations along the BC coast, you can certainly see the effects of time, some rocks are carved and polished smooth from water and wind erosion, some others are very jagged, so many different colours as well. Very interesting!!

Hay tantas formaciones de rocas diferentes a lo gardo de la costa de British Columbia, ciertamente se puede ver el efecto del tiempo, algunas rocas estas esculpidas, otras son lisas por la erosión del viento y el agua, otras están como afiladas y  de muchos colores diferentes. Muy interesantes!!

I am having so much fun revisiting some of the places we have been  in our different trips up to Desolation Sound or just here around the Gulf Islands. The variety of scenery we see from the boat is mind boggling and very inspiring! Some  of these ones will make it to bigger canvas for sure!

This painting was inspired by a previous painting of mine of the huge fog bank that sometimes sits in between the Olympic Mountains in the US and our island. Sometimes it's really thick and sits there the whole day. I need to look at this painting some more, it may get some changes, haven't decided yet. I actually I do that with all of them but  usually prefer to do it at the end of the 30 days once I have had a chance to rest from them and look at them more objectively.

La inspiración para este cuadro surgió de un anterior que yo había pintado del enorme banco de niebla que suele ocurrir entre las Montañas Olímpicas en los EEUU y nuestra Isla de Vancouver. Muchas veces es enorme y está durante todo el día. Tengo que mirar este cuadro un poco más, tal vez le haga algunos cambios, no lo he decidido todavía. En realidad hago eso con todos, pero prefiero hacerlo al final de los 30 días una vez que he tenido tiempo de descansar y puedo mirar lo que he echo de forma mas objetiva.

A few weeks ago I went to see a Monet exhibit at the Vancouver Art Gallery called Secret Garden. I loved seeing his work up close and personal but what I rescued more than anything from being in front of his paintings in person was seeing how much he painted the same thing over and over again. He studied the same subject in different light, at different times of the day, you can tell he was experimenting in how to make things work.....
That, as well as an app which I will tell you in a different post after the challenge, inspired me to do something like that.... This painting came from a cropping of another painting of mine. I started by doing a small study of it to see if the composition worked. Moving on to bigger canvas next.... Yay.... day 1 is done!!!

Hace unas semanas fui a la muestra "Jardín Secreto" de Monet en Galería de Arte de Vancouver. Me encantó ver su trabajo de cerca en persona pero lo que mas que nada  rescato de la experiencia fue ver cómo él pintaba lo mismo todo el tiempo, repetía sus cuadros y temas en distinta luz, en diferentes momentos del día, en distintas condiciones de clima.... se puede ver que él estaba experimentando para lograr expresarse mejor sobre el lienzo. .... Eso, además de una app en el ipad que les voy mostrar después que termine el desafío, fue mi inspiración para pintar siguiendo esos parámetros.  Este cuadro salió de uno anterior que yo había echo. Comencé con un estudio pequeño con una composición diferente del original. El próximo será más grande..... que suerte que el primer día ya está!!!!!

Otro cuadro pequeño que fue resultado del fin de semana  en  el velero hace unas semanas. Esta es una escena muy típica aquí en la Costa Oeste. Tengo tanta suerte y estoy tan agradecida de vivir en un ougar tan ermoso donde hay inspiración por todos lados! When we were coming back from Genoa Bay last Easter Weekend, we were on our way home and as the boat was quite stable I was able to paint the whole time. This is the view we were laving behind. I was just intending to paint the landscape and at the last minute the sailboats showed up so I had to put them in! Saltspring Island to the right and Cowichan Bay right behind!

Cuando estábamos regresando de Genoa Bay el fin de semana de Pascua, estábamos en marcha y como el velero estaba estable pude pintar todo el viaje de vuelta. Esta vista es lo que dejábamos, iba a pintar el paisaje y a ultimo momento aparecieron los veleros y los tuve que agregar! La Isla de Saltspring es la forma de la derecha y La Bahía de Cowichan es lo que hay atras!

Another one from the sailing trip this past Easter. We have been to Genoa Bay so many times that you would think I can't find any more paintings there but I still can. As a matter of fact, there are still several still waiting for the next few times.

It's always amazing to see boats in different coves that haven't been touched in who knows how many years.... once upon a time those boats may have been burning desires for somebody and it's kind of sad to see them forgotten..... Right next to this boat there's still a couple of boats I painted a few years ago. I loved the way that other painting "Old Timers" turned out, and I am pretty happy with his one too!

 Este es otro cuadro del viaje en el velero esta Pascua pasada. Hemos ido a esta bahía tantas veces uno puede pensar que ya no puedo encontrar más nada que pintar pero si hay cuadros todavía por pintar.... Hay todavía unos cuantos para las próximas veces.
Siempre me parece increíble ver embarcaciones en distintas bahías que es obvio que hace  años que nadie las toca.... quién sabe, en su momento, esos barcos han sido tal vez tan deseados y disfrutados y es bastante triste ver como están olvidados… Justo al lado de de esta lancha hay todavía otro par que pinté hace un par de años. Me encantó como salió ese otro cuadro, "Viejitos"  y estoy bastante contenta contenta con este también!

This year we did our first sailing trip quite early in the season, Easter weekend. It was a very relaxing time in which I got to do a fair bit of painting. This one is in Todd Inlet, just outside the famous Butchart Gardens. Even though the wind was blowing outside, inside the protected cove it was so still there was a perfect mirror reflection during the evening.

 

Este año comenzamos la temporada de navegación bastante temprana, el fin de semana de Pascua. Fue un fin de semana muy tranquilo en el que pude pintar bastante. Éste cuadro es Todd Inlet, justo afuera de los famosos Butchart Gardens.  Había bastante viento afuera de estar bahía tan resguardada pero aquí adentro estaba tan calmo que el reflejp era como un espejo ese anochecer.

This is one of my favourite paintings from the Hawaii series. The ocean was quite choppy that day and I was playing with the colours more than anything when at the very end a sailboat showed up and I just had to put it in! Hope you like it!

This study was the second of the day while sailing down the Strait of Georgia last July on our way back to Victoria from Desolation Sound.  It doesn't matter how many times I am in those areas, there's always a different way to paint them and so much to explore. I am sure I'll paint it again next summer when we are up there on our holidays.   I am actually pretty pleased with how this one turned out, it's the companion piece to the one I published a couple of days ago....

Este estudio fue el segundo del día que hice cuando navegamos en el Estrecho de Georgia este julio pasado cuando volvíamos a Victoria desde Desolation Sound. No importa cuantas veces esté en esas zonas, siempre encuentro una forma diferente de pintarlos, hay tanto para explorar. Estoy muy contenta con cómo me salió, es el cuadro compañero al que publique antes de ayer.

Life has been so busy! We started a kitchen reno about 2 months and it has eaten up a lot of my time, I am still painting  but don't seem to have the time (or energy) to come  to the blog..... I'll try and do a better job, no promises though ( I think I have said that before??) .... The kitchen is going great, so happy with the way it's looking and one of the best things is that I am actually re-purposing some of the cabinets and using a few of them in the studio. For the most part they are ok, I have painted them white and I am thrilled to have them here!! One of them used to be an small (very useless) island in the kitchen, it's going against the wall here in the studio and it has a sink!!!! I have waited for this moment for over a year now and  the moment has come! It will be great to have water in the studio!

The painting above was done this past summer when sailing back from Desolation Sound to Victoria, the ocean was very calm that day and I was able to paint for a few hours. This was just a study in colour and simplicity. I am happy with how it turned out!

He estado tan ocupada! Comenzamos con una remodelación en la cocina hace como dos meses y la verdad es que me ha ocupado bastante tiempo,  he seguido pintando, pero es como que no tengo tiempo o energía para venir al blog. Voy a tratar de de hacerlo más a menudo, sin promesas! Me parece que dicho esto antes no? La cocina va muy muy bien, estoy muy contenta con cómo está quedando y una de las mejores cosas es que estoy re usando algunos de los muebles, los estoy trasladando a mi taller. Como están bastante buena condición, lo he pintado de blanco y estoy super contenta de tenerlos acá! Uno de esos era una isla bastante inútil en la cocina pero acá va a ir contra la pared en mi taller y tiene una pileta.! Hace un año y medio que espero este momento, y el momento ha llegado, va a ser bárbaro tener agua en mi taller!

Este cuadro lo hice este verano pasado cuando estábamos navegando desde Desolation Sound a Victoria, el mar estaba muy calmo ese día y puede pintar durante bastantes horas. Esto simplemente fue un estudio de color y  simplicidad. Estoy muy contenta con cómo quedó!

This little island is just outside  Ganges Harbour in SaltSpring Island, I painted it last year when we stopped for the night. I also already wrote about it here . I mentioned in that post that they were building a house which was no longer there later in the season. What I have found out is that the island is actually native sacred land so the building of the house was halted. I guess it will stay like this after all, minus a couple trees maybe, I'll take a look next time I am there :)

The reason I am writing about it again is that I am very happy to report  this painting has been  accepted into the FCA Victoria Chapter Fall Show happening at Goward House until November 23. Make sure you stop by and take a look if you can, there are many very good paintings. There's tea and goodies to turn your visit into a nice outing. We are having an opening reception this coming Sunday Nov 6, 2-4 pm.  I live very close  so if you are planning to stop by at some other time other than the opening, give me a call, we can visit and share a cup of tea ;)

Esta islita está  en el Puerto Ganges en la Isla Saltspring, la pinte el año pasado cuando paramos ahí a pasar la noche. Ya escribí sobre este cuadro y lo pueden ver acá  Mencioné en ese post que la casa que estaban construyendo en esta isla no estaba más, desde entonces he averiguado que la isla es en realidad tierra sagrada de los nativos por lo tanto se paró la construcción de la casa. Me imagino que va a seguir así después de todo, tal vez con unos árboles menos,  voy a ver la próxima vez que vaya.

La razón por la que les cuento de nuevo sobre este cuadro es que estoy contenta de informarles que  ha sido aceptado en la Muestra de Otoño de la Federación de Artistas Canadienses, que es en  Goward House hasta el 23 de Noviembre. Asegúrense de parar si pueden ya que hay muchos cuadros muy buenos. Hay también té y cosas ricas para convertir la visita en una buena salida. Vamos a tener una recepción con los artistas este domingo 6 de noviembre de 2 a 4 de la tarde. Vivo muy cerca así que si planean parar en algún otro momento que no sea la recepción, llámenme, puedo ir y tomamos una taza de té.
