In the last year or so I have gotten into the habit of trying the same subject several times, different formats, different sizes and/or palettes and I love the explorations this sends me in.... it’s always a road to new discoveries but most of all it satisfies my curiosity when I say for instance ‘what would it look like if’.... I’m always curious... this particular painting was inspired by a watercolour I did on the boat last year, tried it an 8 x 10 oil, then said, what if I do it square, oooohhh I like this, I want to make it bigger which turned into what if I try it long and skinny and voila. That was a bit of the thinking process behind it. I like this format!  And does it look great in that room??

Estos últimos años me he puesto en el hábito de tratar el mismo tema varias veces, en diferentes formatos, diferentes tamaños y colores y me encantan las exploraciones en la que termina… Siempre es un camino hay nuevos descubrimientos pero más que nada satisfacer mi curiosidad ya que digo por ejemplo como quedaría si… Siempre tengo curiosidad... Este cuadro en participar fue inspirado por una acuarela con gouache que hice en el velero el año pasado, despues un óleo de 8 × 10, después dije y si lo pinto cuadrado?, ooohhh me gusta, lo quiero hacer mas grande, y después me pregunte y si lo hago alargado? Ese fue más o menos el proceso 😂..... Me gusta este formato y no queda hermosa en esa habitación?? Espero que les guste!

Winter Small Works Show & Sale

I'm excited to be part of the 2018 Winter Small Works Show at the Massey Gallery at the At Gallery of Greater Victoria. I have 3 pieces in it, one of the was Sitting in The Morning Sun which I shared with you a few weeks ago. 

I attended the Opening Reception and it was great to see so many people there.  I think it's always interesting to see how different styles can hang next to each other so well. Mine are the rectangular seascapes which were painted on the boat last summer during our adventures in the Broughtons. Show is on until Jan 31. There are so many treasures for you to enjoy (and take home if you want ;) Make sure you stop by!!

Estoy contenta de participar en la Muestra de Obras Pequeñas de la Galeria de Arte de Victoria. Tengo 3 cuadros incluídos en la exhibición y uno de ellos es "Sentados en el Sol de Mañana" que les mostré hace unas semanas. Fui a la recepción de apertura y fue buenísimo ver tanta gente ese día. Siempre me parece tan interesante ver cómo trabajos de distintos estilos se complementan en exhibiciones. Los míos son los 3 paisajes de mar que pinté este verano pasado en el velero durante nuestras aventuras por la Broughtons. La muestra corre hasta el 31 de Enero, pasen a verla! Hay muchos tesoros para que disfruten y para que tal vez se lleven a casa. ;)

Let’s see if I can get back with the program, it seems I needed a little break from social media!! So we are going back to summer with this post. This one day last August we tried fishing for halibut in a bank in the middle of Queen Charlotte Strait. Actually, let’s correct that: my husband tried fishing, I painted! It was a very quiet morning, the water was very still and we could hear whales in the distance, every now and then we would hear their puffs from them surfacing to breathe. We looked and looked but they were not close enough to see them. It’s was a beautiful day anyway!
This is the painting created that day. I love the colours that happened.... I may have to do a larger version of this one. I called it Waiting as that is what we were doing: Waiting for the whales to get closer, for the fish to bait and for me to finish the painting!!

Veamos si puedo volver a la rutina, parece que me hacía falta una vacación de Instagram y Facebook. Con este post volvemos al verano:?este día en particular en agosto, tratamos de pescar, mejor dicho, mi esposo trató de pescar y yo pinté! Era una mañana muy tranquila, el mar estaba muy calmo y podíamos escuchar ballenas a la distancia, a cada rato se sentían cuando salían a respirar. Miramos y miramos pero no estaban tan cerca como para verlas. Lo mismo, fue hermoso!
Éste es el cuadro que pinté ese día. Me encantan los colores que aparecieron, tal vez tenga que hacer una versión grande. La titulé Esperando, ya que estábamos esperando que las ballenas se acercaran, que los pescados picaran y que yo terminara este cuadro!!

"Sitting in the Morning Sun" was painted this summer during our sailing trip in August. As you may remember, my husband and I spend a month on our sailboat cruising around the Broughtons and Desolation Sound. Many nights, we would drop anchor in quiet bays without any other boats in sight. These coves are usually small and protected with beautiful sights to paint. Many times, the views would be quite closed in, and in the end, I ended up focusing on small, intimate views of several points or islets which didn't include any part of the sky which was different form the landscapes I usually paint. Can you guess what we were listening to as I painted??? Love that song!!

Pinté "Sentados al Sol de la Mañana" este verano durante nuestro viaje en el velero en agosto. Como pueden recordar tal vez, mi esposo y yo pasamos un mes navegando por las Broughtons y Desolation Sound. Muchas noches tirábamos el ancla en bahías muy tranquilas en las que no había ningún otro velero. Éstas bahías son normalmente muy pequeñas y protegidas con vistas hermosas para pintar. Muchas veces estas vistas eran bastante cerradas y al final terminé enfocándome en vistas muy íntimas de islotes sin incluir nada de cielo. Pueden adivinar qué canción estaba escuchando mientras pintaba? Me encanta esa canción!

Well..... a few storms passed through this painting (haha!) and I'm not sure this one will stay here long but I'm running out of time today and wanted to post today's painting...  I have changed the clouds and other elements several times, there are some things I really love about it, some of the colours in the clouds and the thickness of the paint but I'm not sure all the shapes really work so again..... I'll let it rest and see it tomorrow with fresh eyes.  Of course, I'm always open to comments!

Bueno, han pasado varias tormentas por este cuadro (jaja!) y no estoy segura si esta se queda o se va pero me estoy quedando sin tiempo y quiero publicar el trabajo de hoy.... He cambiado esas nubes y otros elementos varias veces, hay algunas cosas que me encantan como algunos de los colores en lasnubes o el textura de la pintura pero no estoy segura de que todas las formas que tengo así que como siempre, voy a descansar y mirar todo con ojos frescos mañana. Como siempre, se aceptancomentarios!

We have a couple of kayaks on the boat and once we are set on anchor we often spend quite a few hours  just exploring the bays and coves closeby. There is so much nature to enjoy and it is so so quiet and peaceful!

One day last week we went on the sailboat for the afternoon with 2 friends we have known for a long time. We love sharing our boat and show people our favourite spots. Before dinner while the men went fishing for a while, my friend Karalyn and myself went for a paddle on the kayaks and this was one of the views. It's absolutely fascinating to see the different rock formations, so different from area to area!

Just before we saw this lonely tree at the point we saw a raccoon looking at us  from a log ont he beach, we took some photos and then kept on paddling for a little bit. We thought the racoon was looking for dinner and as soon as we weren't looking he jumped int he water and started swimming! He totally swam from island to another..... I didn't know they could swim so well!

Un día de la semana pasada fuimos en el velero con un par de amigos que hace mucho no veíamos! Nos encanta compartir nuestro velero y nuestros lugares favoritos. Antes de cenar, mientras los hombres fueron a pescar un rato, mi amiga Karalyn y yo fuimos ne los kayaks alrededor de varias islas pequeñas que estaban cerca. y esta era una de las vistas. Es totalmente fascinante observar las distintas formaciones en las rocas, son tan diferentes de una zona a la otra!

Justo antes de  ver este solitario árbol vimos este mapache mirándonos desde un tronco en la playa, le sacamos unas fotos y seguimos. Pensábamos que estaba buscando la cena pero apenas nos dimos vuelta se tiró al agua y empezó a nadar a la isla del frente! Yo no sabía que podían nadar tan bien!

This image is inspired by the last trip up to Desolation Sound a few weeks ago. As everything was covered by a blanket of smoke from the wild fires, the skies were very very grey and flat. I actually took the liberty of adding a bit of texture to the sky as in reality it was just one tone with nothing...... As I painted this I was thinking how interesting it is to think how long some of those trees have been around...... they withstand heat, cold, wind storms and winters and somehow they are still there.....
I started painting for the challenge a few days before  Sep 1 so I would be able to have work done for my traveling days. Last night we left Victoria on our way to our Arctic adventure. As this is published, I am in Yellowknife, painting my life away.

Esta imagen fue inspirada por el último viaje a Desolation Sound hace una semanas. Como todo estaba cubierto por una gran capa de humo producido por los incendios forestales, los cielos estaban muy muy grises. En realidad me tomé la libertad de agregar un poco de textura en el cielo para agregar interés. Mientras pintaba esto, pensaba que es interesante pensar cuanto tiempo que hace que algunos de esos árboles están ahí… Aguantando calor,frío, tormentas de viento, inviernos y sequías y de alguna forma todavía sobreviven… Comencé a pintar para el desafío unas días antes del 1 de septiembre para poder tener trabajo listo para los días de viaje. Anoche salimos de Victoria camino a nuestra aventura en el Artico. Cuando uds. lean esto voy a estar en Yellowknife pintando a loco!

I started this painting at the Moss St. Paint-In back in May and hadn't been able to get back to it.  I had completely blocked it in but hadn't gone any further. I usually paint Alla Prima which means wet into wet oil paint, done all in one sitting or as much of it as possible in the same session. As I had never stopped and let it dry at this block-in stage, I was experimenting in how to proceed. I ended up oiling the whole surface lightly and then just continuing as if I had never stopped with my opaque colours as I usually do. So it worked out differently in that the block in colours didn't mix as much with the second layer while wet but there is still lots of that underpainting showing through which I like.  I love love some of the colours that happened there, the golds and mauves especially. I'll probably try this one again following the same vertical format of the previous ones. It was a good exercise, I'll probably go back into this one as well to change some of the design I am not happy with....but for today..... it's done. :)

Comencé este cuadro en la Pintada de Moss Street este Mayo pasado y no había podido terminarlo. Había bloqueado los colores iniciales completamente pero no había podido hacer más que eso. Normalmente pinto "Alla Prima", que quiere  aplicar el oleo sin que se seque entre capas, se hace todo en una en un sola sesión. De esta manera los colores se mezclan mientras el óleo está todavía húmedo. Como nunca  había parado en esta etapa del bloque inicial, tuve que experimentar con cómo proseguir. Terminé aplicando una capa muy fina de aceite de nuez (que es lo que yo uso para afinar el óleo) y aplicando la capa siguiente de colores opacos como hago simple. El resultado fue que los colores de las dos capas no se mezclaron tanto pero si se alcanza a ver todavía los colores de la primera capa.  Me encantaron los colores amarillos, dorados y lilas que se formaron en esta pieza. Probablemente pruebe este en otro formato como he echo estos días pasados. Fue un buen ejercicio, probablemente vuelva a este cuadro mas a delante y corrija ciertos elementos del diseño del cuadro  que no me satisface del todo... pero por hoy, está lista. :)

This painting was inspired by a previous painting of mine of the huge fog bank that sometimes sits in between the Olympic Mountains in the US and our island. Sometimes it's really thick and sits there the whole day. I need to look at this painting some more, it may get some changes, haven't decided yet. I actually I do that with all of them but  usually prefer to do it at the end of the 30 days once I have had a chance to rest from them and look at them more objectively.

La inspiración para este cuadro surgió de un anterior que yo había pintado del enorme banco de niebla que suele ocurrir entre las Montañas Olímpicas en los EEUU y nuestra Isla de Vancouver. Muchas veces es enorme y está durante todo el día. Tengo que mirar este cuadro un poco más, tal vez le haga algunos cambios, no lo he decidido todavía. En realidad hago eso con todos, pero prefiero hacerlo al final de los 30 días una vez que he tenido tiempo de descansar y puedo mirar lo que he echo de forma mas objetiva.

This one is again one based on a previous painting of mine I did this past year. I am following these steps: first I find the cropping I like, then I do it on a small 6x8 panel and afterwards I move it over to a medium size canvas before going really big, I may need until after the 30 day challenge for that as I want to have more time for each painting.

El de hoy es un recorte de un cuadro anterior que hice el año pasado. Estoy siguiendo el siguiente proceso: Primero encuentro la composición que me gusta,  segundo, la hago en formato pequeño, después la paso a un lienzo mediano y  quiero finalmente llevarlo a un lienzo mucho mas grande pero me parece que voy a tener  que esperar hasta después del desafío para esta etapa porque quiero tener más tiempo  para cada cuadro. A few weeks ago I went to see a Monet exhibit at the Vancouver Art Gallery called Secret Garden. I loved seeing his work up close and personal but what I rescued more than anything from being in front of his paintings in person was seeing how much he painted the same thing over and over again. He studied the same subject in different light, at different times of the day, you can tell he was experimenting in how to make things work.....
That, as well as an app which I will tell you in a different post after the challenge, inspired me to do something like that.... This painting came from a cropping of another painting of mine. I started by doing a small study of it to see if the composition worked. Moving on to bigger canvas next.... Yay.... day 1 is done!!!

Hace unas semanas fui a la muestra "Jardín Secreto" de Monet en Galería de Arte de Vancouver. Me encantó ver su trabajo de cerca en persona pero lo que mas que nada  rescato de la experiencia fue ver cómo él pintaba lo mismo todo el tiempo, repetía sus cuadros y temas en distinta luz, en diferentes momentos del día, en distintas condiciones de clima.... se puede ver que él estaba experimentando para lograr expresarse mejor sobre el lienzo. .... Eso, además de una app en el ipad que les voy mostrar después que termine el desafío, fue mi inspiración para pintar siguiendo esos parámetros.  Este cuadro salió de uno anterior que yo había echo. Comencé con un estudio pequeño con una composición diferente del original. El próximo será más grande..... que suerte que el primer día ya está!!!!!

Otro cuadro pequeño que fue resultado del fin de semana  en  el velero hace unas semanas. Esta es una escena muy típica aquí en la Costa Oeste. Tengo tanta suerte y estoy tan agradecida de vivir en un ougar tan ermoso donde hay inspiración por todos lados! Estoy contenta de que se haya vendido en el tour de Talleres, espero que lo disfrutes por mucho tiempo Debra!

Start of the Season

This year we did our first sailing trip quite early in the season, Easter weekend. It was a very relaxing time in which I got to do a fair bit of painting. This one is in Todd Inlet, just outside the famous Butchart Gardens. Even though the wind was blowing outside, inside the protected cove it was so still there was a perfect mirror reflection during the evening.

 

Este año comenzamos la temporada de navegación bastante temprana, el fin de semana de Pascua. Fue un fin de semana muy tranquilo en el que pude pintar bastante. Éste cuadro es Todd Inlet, justo afuera de los famosos Butchart Gardens.  Había bastante viento afuera de estar bahía tan resguardada pero aquí adentro estaba tan calmo que el reflejp era como un espejo ese anochecer.

After getting back home to the studio I was interested in doing a few paintings with those gorgeous colours I fell in love with in Mexico and Hawaii but following a bit of different approach from the one I normally use, just to play and see if I liked it better. One of the traditional approaches to oils is to cover the whole canvas or panel very thinly with one colour which becomes the base layer,  and in many cases it peeks through  the whole painting here and there when it is not 100% covered. This is what I love that about this approach, it gives the painting unity and a general feel.  This is how I learned when I first started with oils and did it that way for quite a while. Later on I took a workshop where I learned a different approach: You apply an underpainting of many different transparent colours, those colours depend on what you are painting and this is followed by opaque colours on top. Again, lots of the underpaiting still shows in the final product. I liked this way because I was able to achieve brighter cleaner colours as many times the white from the canvas/panel is "shines" through the bottom transparent colours. The previous landscapes and seascapes I have been showing you these past weeks have been done using this last method and "Tropical memories" today was done using the traditional way...... Which one do you prefer???
In the end, in this case, this exercise didn't help me make up my mind..... I liked both ways..... :)

 Después de volver y empezar a trabajar en el taller, estaba muy interesada en hacer unos cuantos cuadros usando esos colores hermosísimos de los que me enamoré cuando estaba en México y en Hawai pero quería hacer un par de experimentos al aplicar los óleos, simplemente para jugar y ver si me gustaba más . Una de las formas tradicionales de usar los óleos es primero cubrir toda la superficie del lienzo o panel con una capa muy fina de un color que se transforma en la base,  en muchos casos este color aparece en distintos lugares del cuadro cuando no se cubre  el 100%. Esto es lo que más me gusta de este método, ya que le da  al cuadro mucha uniformidad. Éste fue la forma en que yo aprendí a usar los óleos y lo hice así durante bastante tiempo. Más adelante tomé un curso en el qie aprendí una  forma diferente: se aplica una base con muchos colores diferentes transparentes, la eleccioón de colores depende de lo que se está pintando y esa capa se sigue con colores opacos encima. Como en el caso anterior, muchas partes de la base se pueden ver en el cuadro si no se cubren el 100% . La razón por la que me gusta este método es porque puedo lograr  colores más limpios y brillantes.  Todos los paisajes que le estado mostrando últimamente han sido pintados utilizando este último método y el de hoy es utilizando el método tradicional … Cuál prefieren? Al final, en este caso, este ejercicio no me ayudó a decidirme cuál me gusta más… Me gusta de las dos formas… :)

Another plein air painting from Hawaii.... when we travel we like to explore and visit the sights but we also like spending some days at the beach which becomes the perfect opportunity for me to pull out my paints to bring back memories. (And  apparently a lot of sand!!!)

Otro cuadro de Hawaii.... cuando viajamos nos gusta recorrer y visitar lugares nuevos pero también nos gusta pasar algunos días en la playa lo que se transforma en la perfecta oportunidad para que yo saque as pinturas y trate de traer recuerdos  (y aparentemente mucha arena!!!) Estos cuadros como pueden ver, se cubrieron de arena y no traté de sacarla inmediatamente si no hubiera movido toda la pintura fresca. Cuando ya estaba de vuelta en Canadá, simplemente les pasé lamano con cuidado sin poner demasiada presión y quedó todo bien. Me alegro de que haya funcionado!!

In Hawaii a very popular thing to do is Stand-Up Paddle Boarding. At any point in time, you'll look  out at the ocean and there are at least a couple of paddlers out there, many times dozens of them. This one day at Nipili Beach in West Maui, there were so many that I decided to put some in my painting.

En Hawaii, el surf de remo es una actividad muy popular. En cualquier momento, si uno mira hacia el océano hay por lo menos un par de tablas en la distancia, muchas veces hay docenas! Este día en particular en la playa Nipili en Maui del Oeste, había tantos que decidí incluirlos en mi cuadro!

Traveling is one my hot buttons, I love it, I love all about it. Discovering new places and cultures is pretty special. I'm finding that traveling with my paints and recording what I see adds a different dimension to it all. It helps me remember the place in a different way. For instance, this is the sunset I remember the most from our recent trip to Maui, Hawaii, probably because not only it was our first evening there but also because of the fact that I really looked at how it developed while I painted it.... The thing with sunsets is that they change VERY quickly as the sun is going down so you need to pick a few things that call your attention first and then you need to stick to those! Otherwise it's very easy to get confused with the lights and darks  and the whole scene overall. The reflections for instance changed from orange to purple to blue back to orange all in a matter of minutes! We must take certain decisions and stay on that path..... (This goes for so much of plein air painting....)
This painting is called "Happy Hour" because it was painted at that time..... we started the tradition of watching the sunset on our "lanai" (deck) with a Mai Tai in hand.... Yum! (Hawaian typical drink, you can check out the recipe in the link if you want to try it, without grenadine though).

 El viajar es una de mis pasiones, me encanta todo lo relacionado con el viajar. Descubrir lugares y culturas nuevas es algo muy especial. Estoy descbubriendo que el poder viajar con mis pinturas y registrar todo lo que veo en un cuadro  agrega una dimensión distinta al viaje. Me ayuda a recordar cada lugar de forma diferente. Por ejemplo, este es el atardecer que más recuerdo de nuestro reciente  viaje a Maui, Hawai, probablemente no sólo porque fue nuestra primera noche ahí si no también porque realmente lo miré con mucha atención mientras lo pintaba… La cosa con los atardeceres es que cambian muy rápidamente a medida que el sol baja por lo cual es necesario elegir unas pocas cosas que llaman la atención de entrada y es necesario registrar esas cosas sin cambiar de historia! Los reflejs en el agua por ejemplo cambiaron de naranja a violeta a azul, de nuevo a naranja, todo en una cuestión de minutos, no podemos pintar todo y debemos tomar ciertas decisiones y seguir en esa dirección. (esto se aplica en tanatas instancias cuando se pinta al aire libre....)

Este cuadro se llama "Happy Hour" porque lo pinté a esa hora..... empezamos una tradición nueva mientras miramos el atardecer en nuestro la "lanai" (balcón) con un   Mai Tai en la mano… hmmm....  que rico, (bebida típica de Hawaii... acá tienen la receta si lo quieren probar,  pero sin granadina).
