I love working in many different sizes. I like small pieces because I am able to finish a piece in a relatively short period of time. They also help me figure out elements and have also become the jumping point sometimes for bigger works. Last February I painted several boats and as I was very happy with what happened with a few of them, I decided to go a bit bigger and combine them into this bigger one. You can see this painting as well as several other ones at South Shore Gallery in Sooke. It's an 18x24 Oil on Canvas called Island Racing.

Me gusta trabajar en distintos tamaños. Me gustan las piezas pequeñas porque muchas veces puedo terminar un cuadro en un periodo de tiempo relativamente corto. También me ayudan a decidir qué hacer con distintos elementos y muchas veces se transforman en estudios para trabajos más grandes. Este febrero pasado, pinté varios barcos y veleros y como estaba contenta con lo que pasó en algunos de sus cuadros decidí combinarlos y pintar este más grande. Pueden ver este cuadro en South Shore Gallery en Sooke. Es un óleo de 46x61cm que se llama Carreras de la Isla.

I had done this as a plein air study many many years ago; it sold but the image always stayed with me, so I dug up a photo of the sketch  and did it again in juicy oils this time. This spot is a very protected cove in the Sechelt Peninsula where we once or twice we have spent the night on our way up to Desolation Sound. History says that possibly the cove got that name when more than a hundred years ago it was used by a man who used to smuggle Chinese people into the United States for a fee of 100 dollars, that must have been a lot of money back then!

Había pintado este cuadro desde el velero hace muchos muchos años que por suerte se había vendido pero siempre recuerdo esta imagen.  Por eso decidí buscar una foto de ese antiguo bosquejo y decidí pintarlo en óleos esta vez. Este lugar en una ensenada muy protegida en la Peninsula de Sechelt donde una o dos veces hemos pasado la noche camino a Desolation Sound. La historia dice que posiblemente la ensenada recibió este nombre después de ser usada por un señor que se dedicaba a entrar a EEUU gente de China de contrabando  por la suma de 100 dólares, eso debe haber sido mucha plata en a quel entonces!

Well..... a few storms passed through this painting (haha!) and I'm not sure this one will stay here long but I'm running out of time today and wanted to post today's painting...  I have changed the clouds and other elements several times, there are some things I really love about it, some of the colours in the clouds and the thickness of the paint but I'm not sure all the shapes really work so again..... I'll let it rest and see it tomorrow with fresh eyes.  Of course, I'm always open to comments!

Bueno, han pasado varias tormentas por este cuadro (jaja!) y no estoy segura si esta se queda o se va pero me estoy quedando sin tiempo y quiero publicar el trabajo de hoy.... He cambiado esas nubes y otros elementos varias veces, hay algunas cosas que me encantan como algunos de los colores en lasnubes o el textura de la pintura pero no estoy segura de que todas las formas que tengo así que como siempre, voy a descansar y mirar todo con ojos frescos mañana. Como siempre, se aceptancomentarios!

There are several yachting clubs that have races on Sunday mornings..... They often have the Olympic Mountain Range in the States as a backdrop and they look just beautiful!

This painting was inspired by a previous painting of mine of the huge fog bank that sometimes sits in between the Olympic Mountains in the US and our island. Sometimes it's really thick and sits there the whole day. I need to look at this painting some more, it may get some changes, haven't decided yet. I actually I do that with all of them but  usually prefer to do it at the end of the 30 days once I have had a chance to rest from them and look at them more objectively.

La inspiración para este cuadro surgió de un anterior que yo había pintado del enorme banco de niebla que suele ocurrir entre las Montañas Olímpicas en los EEUU y nuestra Isla de Vancouver. Muchas veces es enorme y está durante todo el día. Tengo que mirar este cuadro un poco más, tal vez le haga algunos cambios, no lo he decidido todavía. En realidad hago eso con todos, pero prefiero hacerlo al final de los 30 días una vez que he tenido tiempo de descansar y puedo mirar lo que he echo de forma mas objetiva.

Another one from the Spring, went out on a beautiful sunny crisp spring morning again with some friends. I decided to tackle the boats that morning and half way through the reflections and water changed of course as the wind changed. Pulled it out and worked on it, may still need to go back on it but it's done for now.  Off to birthday dinner for my son, he turned 17 yesterday! What a blessing to have him with us! Where has the time gone??

Este es otro de la primavera pasada, fui a pintar con algunos amigos una mañana hermosa y fresca de primavera. Decidí atacar los veleros que había en la bahía  ese día y a mitad de camino todos los reflejos y el agua cambiaron por supuesto porque había cambiado el viento. Por suerte había sacado una foto al comenzar y la pude usar de referencia.  Hoy  trabajé un poco en este cuadro, tal vez todavía tenga que volver hacer más pero por ahora está. Me voy a la cena de cumpleaños de mi hijo, cumplió 17 años ayer, dónde se ha ido el tiempo??  17 años ya!  Que bendición tenerlo con nosotros :)

As I mentioned yesterday, I spent the day the Art Gallery House Tour.and my home for the day was one of the house boats at Westbay Marina . I had a GREAT time, met soooo many people and this is what I painted. I cleaned it up a bit today and again, even though I know it can still have so many corrections, I want to leave it as a plein air study and maintain the original excitement and observations of the day. This was the view from the top deck on the 3rd floor from where we had well over 180 degrees views of the marina and Esquimalt-downtown waterfront all the way to the Cruise terminal. I just focused on a tiny little bit of the view.
Thank you so much to all the volunteers that made this day possible and for the invitation to participate in the event.Thank you so much to all that stopped by to chat and express how much they liked my work  and a very special thanks to Barbara and Dennis, the owners of the house for opening their home so we could all have a small taste of what life on the water may be and enjoy the fantastic views from every room of the house!!

Como les conté ayer, pasé el día en Tour de Casas y mi "hogar" por el día de ayer fue una de las casas flotantes en la Marina Westbay. La pasé muy muy bien, conocí muchísima gente y esto es lo que pinté. Hoy ya en el taller la he "limpiado" un poquito.... como también les dije antes, sé que le hacen falta muchas correcciones pero quiero dejarlo como un bosquejo al aire libre y mantener el entusiasmo y las observaciones del día sin completamente cambiar el cuadro. Esta era la vista desde  la terraza del 3er piso desde la que había mas de 180 grados de vista de la marina hasta el centro de Victoria. Yo simplemente enfoqué un pedacito chiquito de toda esa vista increíble.
Muchísimas gracias a todos los voluntarios que hicieron este día posible y por la invitación a participar en este evento. Muchísimas gracias también a todos los que pararon a conversar y expresaron cuanto disfrutaron de mi trabajo. Especialmente muchas gracias a Barbara y Dennis, los dueños de la casa por habernos abierto sus puertas para que nosotros pudiéramos tener un pantallazo de lo que es la vida en el agua y a la vez disfrutar de las fantásticas vistas desde cada habitación de la casa!!

I am very pleased and excited to have 2 paintings accepted into the Federation of Canadian Artists  2016 Spring Exhibition. It is always an honour to be part of shows with this group. "Anchored" was painted this last January when I was experimenting with larger oils. I was pleased with the results. "Old Timers" was a plein-air piece I did last summer while we were anchored at Genoa Bay.

Painting "for" shows can be a stressful event for me. It seems that in the back of my head I am always judging every single stroke I make: "Oh no, this will ruin it, this doesn't work..... blah, blah, blah" and it makes me get tighter and tighter with my painting, in this way completely losing the fun of painting. I was working on something different from what I submitted for this show and that added stress of "this painting has to work out". It paralyzed me and I didn't finish them in time. So instead of not submitting anything,  I took a look at other paintings I had produced during this past year and picked 2 I felt comfortable submitting to be juried. I was VERY pleased when they did get in. This reinforces my idea that we must just paint, whatever we are called to paint at the moment, loving and enjoying the process. If we manage to  do that, there will be gems worthy of  juried shows and events.

The show runs from April 6 -17 with an opening reception today Sunday, April 10 from 2 to 4 pm. I will be in attendance today so please say hi if you stop by. The show is at Coast Collective Gallery, #103 - 318 Wale Road in Colwood  (Open Hours: Wed to Sun 11 to 5 pm.)

Estoy muy contenta ya que tengo 2 cuadros aceptados en la Muestra de Primavera de la Federación de Artistas Canadienses. Siempre es un honor participar en las exhibiciones organizadas por este grupo.  Pinté "Anclado"  este Enero pasado cuando estaba experimentando con óleos mas grandes. Estoy bastante contenta con los resultados. "Viejitos"  fue un cuadro que pinté al aire libre este verano pasado cuando estabamos anclados en una bahía que se llama Genoa Bay.

El pintar específicamente "para" exhibiciones juradas es muy estresante a veces para mí. Parece que  es como que yo juzgara cada pincelada que doy.... "Oh, no, esto va a arruinar el cuadro, esto no funciona.... blah, blah, blah". Esto hace que poco a poco me paralice, y de esta maner no disfruto mas el pintar. Estaba trabajando en  un par de cuadros espcíficamente para esta muestra y con el estres de "este cuadro me tiene que salir bien", no los terminé a tiempo. Asi que en lugar de no presentar nada, me fijé en lo que ya tenía pintado este año pasado y seleccioné 2 cuadros. Me puse MUY contenta cuando fueron selccionados para ser parte de la  muestra. Este proceso fortalece mi idea de que debemos pintar de acuerdo a lo que nos inspira en su momento, disfrutando del proceso y al hacer eso, va a haber ciertas piezas que se destacan para ser presentadas en mustras juradas.

Esta exhibición va desde el 6 al 17 de Abril con una recepción hoy Domingo 10 de Abril de 2 a 4 pm. Voy a estar ahí hoy asi que pasen a saludar si pueden. La muestra es en la  Galería de Coast Collective #103 - 318 Wale Road en Colwood (Miercoles a Domingo de 11 a 5 )

Lake Boats - #28 of 30

I have had this photo of Lago di Como printed for a while  but  didn't tackle it before as  I was worried about the buildings. I tried to not get very tight with it, not thrilled with the results but it was good to try. Actually, now that I think about it I was having more trouble with the colour than with the drawing and design. The reason for it was that I started with a dirty palette from the previous painting and was too lazy to get properly set up to be honest. Lesson learnt with this one: Always start with fresh and paint and palette. Getting to the end of the challenge and I feel I haven't even gone through 10% of the reference material I brought back from Italy. :)

He tenido esta foto del Lago di Como lista para pintar desde el comienzo pero no la ataqué hasta ahora porque estaba preocupada con los edificios. Traté de mantener la espontaneidad, no estoy super contenta pero es un buen comienzo. En realidad, ahora que pienso, no fueron las formas y el diseño que me dieron trabajo sino los colores. La razón de eso fue que empecé con la paleta con los colores que habían sobrado de la pintura anterior y tuve demasiado pereza para arreglar todo de la forma debida para ser honesta. La lección aprendida entonces es: Siempre empezar con pintura y paleta fresca. Estamos llegando al final del desafío y no he llegado a tocar ni un 10%  de las fotos que trade del viaje a Italia. :)

Today I decided to go back to Como Lake. Honestly, I don't remember exactly where the photo was taken but it could be anywhere on the lake. I had fun with this piece and I am enjoying myself a lot with this Italy series. In a way, it makes me go back there all over again! I hope some of these paintings bring back some memories of past travels for you as well. :)
I called it "Timeless" because that is the sense in many of these towns, it's like time doesn't go by and things have been there for a long time.

Hoy decidí volver al Lago di Como. Honestamente no me acuerdo de dónde es esta foto pero puede ser en cualquiera de los pueblos sobre el lago. Disfruté mucho de esta pieza y me está gustando esta serie de Italia. En cierta forma, me hace volver allá y recordar  los hermosos lugares que visitamos. Espero que algunos de estos cuadros también les traigan memorias de viajes pasados. :)
Esta pieza se llama "Parado en el Tiempo" porque esto es lo que parece que pasa en muchos de estos pueblos, es como que el tiempo no pasara y muchas  cosas están ahí desde hace mucho tiempo. 

Reflections (#86 of 100) and Happy Dance!!

I am very, very happy to announce that "the big monster" I have been working on got accepted into Sooke Fine Arts this year!! Yes!!! Big smile!! I am doing a happy dance!! Sooke Fine Arts is one the biggest juried shows on Vanvouver Island and it was one of my goals to submit to it this year. I only say "submit to" and not "get in" as a goal because you never know with juried art shows; I did my part, put the work in (and it took a few hours!) and I am very happy with the acceptance!

I had started this canvas a few years ago and due to lack of time had never finished it. It is the largest piece I have worked on (48x60) and I learnt a ton in the process. This canvas had a mind of its own from the get go, I wanted it to go in a certain direction and things wouldn't work, so after much frustration  several times  I said to myself: "Stop fighting it, this is the way this one will be".  It has a much more realistic look than I wanted it to have.

My new found love from this painting is Cadmium Orange. It gave me the "warm glow" I was after in some areas when mixed with Dioxazine Purples and different amounts of white and/or ultramarine blue.

The show runs July 25 to August 4 at Seaparc Leisure Centre in Sooke and unfortunately I won't be in town for it, (we are going to Italy!!!! Yes, I know, bummer eh?) Put it on your calendars and be sure to stop by if you can!

Estoy muy, muy contenta de poder anunciar que "el monstruo" en el que he estado trabajando duro ha sido aceptado en la muestra Sooke Fine Arts este año!! Si!!! Gran sonrisa acá!!  Bailecito de alegría!! Esta es una de las muestras juradas más grandes en la Isla de Vancouver y era una de mis metas presentar algo para ser considerado para la exhibición. Noten que sólo digo "presentar" y no "ser aceptada" como meta ya que uno nunca sabe con las muestras juradas; yo hice mi parte, trabajé mucho (y me llevó bastantes horas!) y estoy muy contenta con la aceptación!

Había comenzado este lienzo hace muchos años y por falta de tiempo nunca lo había terminado. Es la pieza más grande que he echo y aprendí muchísimo en el proceso. Este lienzo tomó sus propias decisiones desde el comienzo. Yo quería llevar las cosas en cierta dirección y no salían para nada así que después de mucha frustración algunos días me dije: "Dejá de luchar, este va a ser de este modo". Es mucho más realista de lo que yo quería. 

Un nuevo amor que encontré en este cuadro es el Naranja Cadmin. Me dió el "reflejo cálido" que buscaba cuando lo mezclaba con Morado Dioxazine y diferentes cantidades de blanco y/o Azul Ultramarino. 

La muestra es desde el 25 de julio hasta el 4 de agosto en el Centro de Recreation Seaparc en Sooke  y desafortunadamente no voy a estar en Victoria para esa fecha (Vamos a Italia!!! Si, ya sé, que lastima que vamos a Italia no? ) Marquen la fecha en sus calendarios y pasen a verla si pueden! 

#17 of 30: Afternoon Sail

Again today I started with one canvas and one idea, worked at it for a quite a while and in the end I abandoned it, put that canvas aside and started with something fresh. 

This is a shot of the Saanich Península and Bazan Bay in Vancouver Island (where I live) from Sydney Island, about 15 away from our marina. We had gone out for a sail for the afternoon and it was a beautiful day with some very interesting cloud formations. We are so very fortunate to live in such a beautiful place!

Pretty happy with it, simple and it worked. 

My apologies for the photograph, I can't take one in this light tonight without the shine of the wet paint.

Hoy de nuevo empecé con un lienzo y una idea, trabajé bastante tiempo en eso y no funcionaba así que al final lo abandoné y empecé con una idea nueva.

Esta imagen es de la Península de Saanich y la Bahía Bazán en la  Isla de Vancouver (en la que yo vivo) desde la isla de Sidney, aproximadamente a 15 minutos de la marina donde tenemos el velero. Habíamos salido a navegar una tarde, era un día hermoso y había unas formaciones de nubes muy interesantes. Tenemos mucha suerte de vivir en un lugar tan hermoso!

Estoy bastante contenta con como quedó, simple, pero funciona. 

Mis disculpas por la foto, no puedo sacar una esta noche sin el brillo de la pintura fresca.

Wow! one week is done and onto the next one!!

This is the second one I did yesterday. I had fun with both of them. I almost did a couple more with the same subject matter today using a different part of the photo reference and a different  palette but I had cut flowers from my garden a few days ago to paint them. They were sitting right next to the easel ready to go, waiting for me to oaint them so that is what I had to do today. It was really nice to paint today without having the pressure of 100% finishing it for posting (like it was last week a few times). It is 80% finished. I am able to wait until tomorrow to finish it when it so wet.

Wow! Ya pasó una semana y se viene la segunda!!

Esta es la segunda que hice ayer. Disfrute mucho pintar las dos. Hoy casi hice un par  más en este mismo tema usando otra parte de la misma foto de referencia y otra paleta pero había cortado una flores de mi jardín hace un par de días para pintarlas. Estaban ahí al lado del atril esperando que las pintara y eso fue lo que  tuve que hacer! Fue muy bueno pintar hoy sin la presión de tener que terminar la pintura 100% (como ha sido varios días la semana pasada) esta un 80% terminada y fue bueno poder espera hasta mañana que la pintura este un poco más seca.

Every year in May there is a sailing race in Victoria called Swiftsure. It is an overnight race and it goes from Victoria out to Swiftsure Banks and back in the Juan de Fuca and Haro Straight. It brings sailors from all over the place and it is a great weekend event. (Lots of times the race is nicknamed "Driftsure" when there is no wind!) Today I dug out the photo I took quite a few years ago at the race start and decided to give it a go in oils. I have tried it in watercolors, acrylics and I am still drawn to the action of the race. I wanted to capture the movement more than anything and what looks like confusion from shore.

I am happy as today I was actually able to do 2 today. I used the same reference, just different parts of the photo and as I was using relatively the same palette I painted them at the same time.
So yes! I am ahead one painting for the challenge in case I can't do it one day.

Todos los años en Mayo hay una regata en victoria que se llama Swiftsure. Es una cara que dura más de 24 horas y va desde Victoria hasta Swiftsure Banks en el Estrecho de Juan de Fuca y Haro. Atrae a   Participantes de todos lados y es un gran evento ese fin de semana. Hoy saque la foto de la pila y decidí tratarla con óleos. La he pintado hace muchos años en acuarelas y en acrílicos y todavia sme atrae mucho toda la accion de la carrera. Quería más que nada capturar el movimiento y lo que parece  confusión desde la costa. 

Estoy contenta porque hoy pude hacer 2 pinturas. Use la misma foto de referencia, partes diferentes de la foto y como usaba más o menos la misma paleta los pinte a los 2 al mismo tiempo.
Así qué, si! Tengo una de reserva  por las dudas no pueda pintar un día.
