Gold - #30 of 30

"Gold" - 6x6 - Oil on Canvas
"Dorado" - 15x15 - Oleo

SOLD

Wow! We did it!! What a ride it has been but more on the conclusions of the challenge on the next post.
Here is another shoe, again from a window display in Venice.  I am very happy with the way this one came out. It was one of those paintings that just poured out of the brush. I love the warm dark in the background and the sparkles (even when I would never wear a shoe like this!)  It was the first time I painted "gold" and it was fun.

Thank you so much for visiting, have a great day!

Wow!

A trip to Italy couldn't be complete without some fashion. Milan has a whole district in the historic centre that is ALL about fashion and design. All the famous brands are there with neat window displays, bodyguards and some outrageous prices. Every other city has all these stores, I found these boots in a display in Venice.  I must admit I am not a shopper at all (much to my daughter's demise) but loved seeing the all the glitter and shine on the windows. I came back home to Canada empty handed in the fashion department, a couple of friends  were highly disappointed. :)  It was hard to photograph the wet dark, oil paint, my apologies for that. Are there any special tricks to it that you know of?

Lake Boats - #28 of 30

"Lake Boats" - 6x6 - Oil on Canvas
"Lanchas" - 15x15cm - Oleos

I have had this photo of Lago di Como printed for a while  but  didn't tackle it before as  I was worried about the buildings. I tried to not get very tight with it, not thrilled with the results but it was good to try. Actually, now that I think about it I was having more trouble with the colour than with the drawing and design. The reason for it was that I started with a dirty palette from the previous painting and was too lazy to get properly set up to be honest. Lesson learnt with this one: Always start with fresh and paint and palette. Getting to the end of the challenge and I feel I haven't even gone through 10% of the reference material I brought back from Italy. :)

*****

I have wanted to do a painting like this for a long time and this was a test  to see how it would work out. I think that  I need to abstract the shapes a lot more to get it the way I had it in mind but it is a start. This is one of the beauties of this 30 day challenge, we get to try out things without being completely vested on the results as we only put in a few hours.
Going up and down Como Lake in Northern Italy you see communities like this everywhere, they are built on the mountain side and they are just a blur of shapes and colours without a proper focal point or anything that jumps out from  the bunch. That is what I wanted to portray, I just don't know if it is interesting enough. Not sure it works but it was fun.

*****

Tuscan Farm - #25 of 30

"Tuscan Farm" - 6x6 - Oil on Canvas
"Granja Toscana" - 15x15 - Oleo
$75

Well..... sometimes things don't go as planned. I started with another painting this morning and it wasn't working. Had some errands to do, (including delivering of day 13 painting to the happy golfer who purchased it, Thank you Richard! I hope you enjoy it!) and by the time I came back there was no way I was able to tackle the perspective lines of the one I was working on. So I chose this little Tuscan landscape, played with colour a bit and day 25 is done! I think I need to add one dark stroke now that I see on the screen, first thing tomorrow. Only 5 more to go (and 4 days!)

*****

Nona's Patio - #24 of 30

"Nona's Patio" - 6x6 - Oil on Canvas
"El Patio de la Nona" - 15x15cm - Oleo

It is very interesting through this 30 day painting process to observe how I tackle things differently each day according to my mood.  Some days I have the patience to do more detailed and/or precise work, some other days, I should just do big blobs of colour as I have zero patience for correcting!  Today is  the latter. :)
I like the little story that can come up from this scene, we can imagine how many dinners and chats have happened at this table.
This came from a place we stayed at in Tuscany, North of Rome in a tiny town called Scansano close to Maremma. We stayed at a convent (Convento del Preteto) built in the 1300's which has been turned into apartments. Very Cool!

 *****

Under the Grapevine - #23 of 30

"Under the Grapevine" - 8x10 - Oil on Birch Panel
"Debajo de la Parra" - 20x25cm - Oleo

I have been procrastinating to do this painting for the whole 24 days of the challenge, it was on the original bunch I printed.  And there was a reason for avoiding it! Those shadows gave me the grief I expected today and I am not sure I got it totally solved and finished. They kept getting bigger and bigger and it would take a lot of conscious effort to make them go back to the original shape! I was so glad I took a photo at the somewhat beginning stages because it helped me later on to look and say "Hey! What happened?? How did I lose all that great empty space on the wall and filled it with shadows that were not there to begin with?" Will live with it for a few days and look at it with fresh eyes. Lesson today?  Paint more shadows to get them right!  Love the colours though!

This door can be found at a B&B on the hill up to the lighthouse in Brunate, the town above Como. There were tables and chairs under the grapevine overlooking the great view of the city of Como below.

*****

Places like this are everywhere in Italy. Old castles, palaces, monasteries with big towers and walls around them which over the centuries have seen many many things and have had many different purposes and lives. Nowadays lots of these places have been turned into apartments, summer homes, hotels.  This is in Moltrasio, one of towns on Como Lake. We came upon it just going up some stairs and exploring the area. From some online research just now I believe it was an old monastery built around the 11th century. I don't know for sure what the purpose of the building is now but it could be someone's "Humble Abode".
I particularly like the contrast of the old and new. The car parked outside the castle, once upon a time it was horses :)

This shot was taken in a little patio in Brunate, which is a very small town above Como City. You get to it by means of a cable car as it is at the top of the mountain. (you can also go by car)  Very nice spot with beautiful views of Como City and the lake. If you ever visit, be prepared to walk endless hills and stairs! We certainly got our workout most days in Italy!
This pots  with Begonias were begging me to paint them, it was fun to paint them. :)

Doors, hmmmm I am liking them more and more!

Took the day off from painting yesterday because it was an absolutely gorgeous day and I wanted to enjoy it outside! So that means that I am now again behind. Did 2 today however which gets me almost caught up again. We are in the final run for the challenge with less than 10 days and 10 paintings to go for. I really enjoy doing this, it commits to getting in the studio and I have had many lightbulb moments. A couple of days ago, I took a long look at all the work I have produced in the last few weeks and I was able to see growth and I also able to pin point the works that stood out and why. I can see that some sparkle and some don't and I believe it is because I have been pushing values a bit. I also am able to build upon the experiencies of each day. Thank you Leslie for organizing the 30-day Challenge again!

This door is in the City of Como, in a piazza, next to a couple of restaurants. I can see it in my mind but couldn't probably find it on the map.

Enjoy!

Puertas.....

Good Neighbours - #19 of 30

"Good Neighbours" - 10x10 - Oil on Canvas
"Buenos Vecinos" - 25x25cm - Oleo
SOLD

And here we go with the second one on the doors and windows series. The story behind this one is somewhat of a funny one:

We went for a drive up the left side of Lago di Como all the way up to Menaggio. We stopped in many small beautiful towns along the way and one of them was Laglio. We knew that George Clooney has his villa, but we didn't know where the house was or what it looked like. Little did I know that if I am standing looking at this door, his villa is right behind me. At the time I had no clue!
There we are, looking around, taking photos of this and that (including his villa) and had no idea. The poor guy is bothered by paparazzi all the time, if he was looking out the window he must have gone: There they are again, those tourists trying to get a glimpse of me! George, if you EVER read this post, we were not, honest! we were just enjoying the scenes. You have a pretty spot there :) Apparently he has had to grow a hedge to have some more privacy. A simple Google search later on showed us we had been right there.
I had decided I was going to be painting this door well before I knew who the neighbours were, I am pretty pleased with the way it turned out.

*****

Lunch rush - #18 of 30

"Lunch Rush" - 6x8 - Oil on Canvas
"Hora del Almuerzo" - 15x20cm - Oleo

I bought some new canvases and I am not very pleased with how they perform. It is not a very nice surface to work on. This is meant just as a sketch, I will do it again with better support and more time :) I am leaning a lot in this 30-day challenge. In this particular piece I learnt what NOT to do: Do not paint on surfaces you do not like, you are running uphill the whole time!

Anyway, this is a photo from Vernazza in Cinque Terre that jumped at me this morning and it has 2 elements that you see a lot of in Italy: patio umbrellas and laundry. Every city is full of restaurants that set up umbrellas outside and at lunch time the shade is all some people are looking for (well maybe some pizza too! ). The laundry lines just outside the windows are also so very Italian.

*****

Timeless - #17 of 30

"Timeless" - 8x10 - Oil on Birch Panel
"Parado en el Tiempo" - 20x25 - Oleo

SOLD

Today I decided to go back to Como Lake. Honestly, I don't remember exactly where the photo was taken but it could be anywhere on the lake. I had fun with this piece and I am enjoying myself a lot with this Italy series. In a way, it makes me go back there all over again! I hope some of these paintings bring back some memories of past travels for you as well. :)
I called it "Timeless" because that is the sense in many of these towns, it's like time doesn't go by and things have been there for a long time.

*****

The Olive Grove - #15 of 30

"The Olive Grove" - 6x6 - Oil on Canvas
"El Olivar" - 15x15 - Oleo

So today was a bit of an experiment and I haven't fully made up my mind about it  yet.  Usually I paint from photos or from life, but I don't make up too much stuff, just paint a glass where there wasn't one for example.  For this one today, I used a couple of photos just as reference plus memory to make this little study. I also had limited time AGAIN so had not much time to fuss with it. I like some things about it but there are some shapes that NEED to be changed and some highlights that need to be added.

The inspiration for this came from the Florence area. From the Piazalle Michealangelo there are wonderful panoramic views of the whole city. There are some old walls and houses with of course olive trees as well as those very typically Mediterranean trees.  (Italian Stone Pine

*****

Lake Villas - #14 of 30

"Lake Villas" - 8x10 - Oil on Birch Panel
"Casonas del Lago" - 15x20 - Oleo

SOLD

We go back to Lake Como in this post. One way to travel up and down the lake is through a boat system called "Navigatione Lago Di Como". You can go up and down the lake, get off and back on at different towns and it gives you the chance to see all the beautiful villas and vistas from the water.
Because I had a lot of things on my to-do list today I decided to do a 37-minute exercise. I set the timer and I went for 37 minutes of straight painting. This is what I got, I may go back and soften some edges and redo some shapes that now, looking at it on the computer, are bothering me a bit but I am pleased. I was trying to achieve a certain palette and values and it worked. :)

*****

Italian Door - #13 of 30

"Italian Door" - 8x10 - Oil on Birch Panel
"Puerta Italiana " - 20x25cm - Oleo

SOLD

This is another front door in Venice, this time not on the water!
The texture of the wall with the plaster all falling was so beautiful next to the green of the plants and the dark door. So many times there are beautiful apartments behind these doors that have been completely restored and  renovated. The one we were staying for example was like that, from the outside it looked like "Oh my gosh!" but inside it was very nice!

Had somewhat of a hard day, things were not working. I worked on another painting and I haven't decided if I will wipe it off or work on it some more to see if I can make it work. I decided to change gears, printed some more photos and went for something that looked like it could be fun and it was!! I am pleased with the results. :)

*****

Front Door - #12 of 30

"Front Door" - 10x10 - Oil on Canvas
"Puerta Principal " - 25x25 cm - Oleo

Well, today we are going back to Venice. It is very interesting  to see people's front doors, lots of them step out right onto the water. Lots of house have boards across their doors to keep the water out when the levels rise. Quite a different lifestyle that"s for sure!  Images like this are just about everywhere you look.
I was specially attracted in this image to the colours, the green water and the soft wall colours. Lots of houses look like they need some finishing and painting which is excellent for painting textures :) I am pretty pleased with the result, I wanted to leave it loose and I like the feel of the painting. Something else unique in Venice is the fact that nothing is square or straight, probably due to the settling. Most church bell towers are leaning, whole buildings are completely crooked. Didn't need to fuss too much with the lines then today to make it look "authentic" :)

*****

Bueno, hoy volvemos a Venecia.

Nailed it! - #11 of 30

"Nailed it! - 8x10 - Oli on. Canvas
"La Clavé! - Oleo

SOLD

Today I participated in a plein-air event here in Victoria so we are tourists in my own town today!
It was called "Fall for the Arts" hosted by the Community Arts Council of Greater Victoria and it was lots of fun. Over 20 painters painted in the Cedar Hill Golf Course and Rec Centre area. Met lots of lovely people, had a couple of visits from some friends and managed to sell my morning piece to one of the golfers on the course. All in all a good day!
As I was setting up, one golfer hit the ball and placed it Very close to the hole and yelled "Nailed It!" He was pretty happy and he gave me the title for this piece.
I'll post the other one tomorrow and I may be getting close to being caught up :)

*****

- #10 of 30

"Un cafe per favore"
6x8 - Oil on Canvas
15x20cm - Oleo

SOLD

In Italy coffee as many of you know is very strong. Being from Argebtina I am used to espressos as that is what we usually have but Italy takes it to the next level in being strong. The little espresso cups are  barely half-full as it is so strong.  Most of the time I would ask them for some extra hot water or an Americano which already comes with the extra water.

"Un Caffé per favore"  is how you order coffee in Italy :) and the plate is hand made as I ran out of patience today to make it work. :) First time I tried painting metal, could be fun to do more.

*****

Firenze After the Rain - #9 of 30

"Firenze After the Rain" - 8x10 - Oil on Birch Panel
"Florencia Después de la Lluvia" -  20x 25cm -  Oleo
SOLD

Florence is such a special place.... history is absolutely everywhere and I really enjoyed our time there. We were fortunate with the weather as it was not as scorching hot as it can be in August. We did get some rain and you can see it in the painting. This is the view of the Arno river and the other bridge from the famous Ponte Vecchio which was very interesting. There are shops all along the bridge (the Ponte Vecchio where o am standing) on both sides with a street in the middle. Once upon a time back in the 13th century it was where butchers, fishmongers and tanners had their stores. Over time they found that too much toxic and smelly waste was going into the river and they were moved to a different part of the city. Since the mid-1500s Jewellers and goldsmiths were and still are the ones to use those stores on the bridge. The light  was of course what made me run to take the photo. :) I am not sure it done, I may go back and punch in some darks and play with the water. I apologize for the somewhat blurry photo, I am not in the studio anymore, will retake tomorrow and replace :)

Down Time - #8 of 30

"Down Time" - 6x8 - Oil on Panel
"Tiempo de Descanso" - 15x20cm - Oleo

Continuing on this virtual trip, we come back to the heart of Tuscany at Il Borgo di Gebbia that I mentioned a few posts ago. We spent a very relaxing afternoon and evening enjoying the views from this special place. Looking at it now on the computer and the blog, I think I will add a pot with greens on the left for balance or make the bright green bushes higher to achieve that. Too late now to go do it and photgraph again. That is the magic of being an artist, I am able to change things to my liking!

I am behind 2 paintings now :( but family comes first. My kids have changed school this past week and the transition has taken up a lot of my time. Hopefully things will be bck to a regular routine soon!

*****

Lunch by the Lake (in Progress) - #7 of 30

"Lunch by the Lake (in Progress) - 8x8 - Oil on Canvas
"Almuerzo en el Lago (sin terminar) - 20x20cm - Oleo

Today we are going up Lago Di Como which is a beautiful area in the north of the country next to Switzerland. Our home base in Italy was Como as my brother, wife and new baby live there so we got to explore the city itself and lots of nearby towns. (Thank you Family!!!) There are absolutely gorgeous villas on the lake, some built by powerful and wealthy families once upon a time. Nowadays some been turned into apartments or hotels, some are owned by the city and used for events and lots are just privately owned.  This view is in a town called Argegno where we stopped to have lunch (pizza of course!)
I did not have time to finish this one, I will do it tomorrow and post it again.

We are still in Tuscany, actually we are in the heart of it! We stayed this one night at this beautiful spot between Florence and Rome. We spent a very relaxing afternoon close to Civitella in Val di Chiana at this excellent B&B called Il Borgo di Gebbia. (If you go to Italy and you are looking for a peaceful spot, do call them) The view was amazing, dinner cooked by our hosts was incredible and of course I took a few pictures. Here is a painting from one of them. Hope you like it!  Grazie Mille Loredana & Marino!

Yellow Field - #5 of 30

Yellow Field - 6x6 - Oil on Canvas

We are staying in Tuscany for one more day as it is very beautiful :) I wanted to try a different composition for this impression of sunflowers. I am not as happy with this rendition as I was with yesterday's but I am pressed for time. I actually painted it yesterday right after the other one as I need to bank a couple for the next few weeks.  :) I ended up not having time today and was glad I had done that yesterday!

****

Tuscan Fields - #4 of 30

"Tuscan Fields" - 9x12 - Oil on Panel
"Campos de la Toscana" - 23x30 - Oleo
SOLD

Today we are taking a drive through Tuscany and we come across some beautiful sunflower fields. One of the things that really suprised me about Italy was how much "space" there was in between towns. I expected it all to be way more populated than it is. There is a LOT more agriculture than I imagined. They plant olive groves, grape vines and orchards everywhere they can and it is really beautiful.  Trying to stay loose, use big brushes and have fun which is what it is all about right?

*****

Venice - #3 of 30

"Venice" - 8x10 - Oil on Board
"Venecia - 20x25 - Oleo

We have come back to the Venice area today!  It is such an incredible place, never seen anything like it. This view is of the Church of the Madonna della Salute from St Mark's Square area and it is quite an iconic sight of Venice I think.
I was pressed for time today and did this study with the idea of coming back to it later on but won't get to it today.  I am however fairly pleased, I pushed myself to use bigger brushes in order to not get too stuck on the details.  Again, I was after the impression of it more than an architectural rendering.

Where to tomorrow??

*****

Corniglia - #2 of 30

"Corniglia" - 6x8 - Oil on Canvas
"Corniglia" - 15x20 cm - Oleo

So today we are going to Corniglia which is on the West coast on the Italian Riviera. I had had these places on my wish list for a long long time and when I saw that we would be driving by I took the chance to spend an extra couple of days there and explore the CinqueTerre. Oh my Gosh! Unbelievable place: 5 small towns, tucked in the mountains for the last several centuries with no easy access. You can either get to them by boat, by train or you can drive but have to hike down as the roadway is at the top of the mountain ridge you see there. They are,  due to that,  quite self sufficient and they have carved every possible spot on the mountain to farm. Quaint as quaint can be, they are very beautiful. We saw Corniglia from the boat as it is the only one that is not built all the way down to the water and the boat wasn't stopping there.

(This was the second painting of the day, the first one was a wipe today! but I am pleased with this one as it a very fresh impression of what I saw)

*****

Burano - #1 of 30

"Burano"- 8x10 - Oil on Panel
"Burano"- 20x25cm - Oleo

Back in the saddle I am! And rusty I am too!! :)

After 5 weeks in Italy and a few weeks on the boat befre and after Itay, I came back home to work on some acrylics that I wanted to have finished for submitting to a show.  With all that, Sep 1 and the start of the Sep 2014 30-day challenge got here before I knew it! I decided to pick a theme (as suggested by Leslie) and it is "Come travel with me" showing images from some of the places I have been to in the last few years. Traveling is for sure a passion of mine; love visiting new places, learning about other cultures and customs. Italy was absolutely gorgeous, everyone should visit it at least once in their lifetime and this is where we begin our travels this month.

First we are stopping at "Burano", one of the islands next to Venice. It is the capital of "lace", all the stores there sell anything lace. But the most interesting thing is that all the houses and boats are painted in extremely bright colours. I was standing taking it all in with a huge smile on my face looking at those houses and all the colour around me!

There are over 600 artists from over 20 countries participating in the challenge this time, go to  http://lesliesaeta.blogspot.ca to see what everyone is producing.

Thanks for stopping by!

*****
