#28 of 30: Almost Home

"Almost Home" - 18x14 - Oil on Canvas
"Casi en Casa" - 46x36cm - Oleo

Back to the seascapes and skies for the last 3, these are all painted from Suzanne's photos (with her permission of course). Today's is a very familiar view to all of us living on Vancouver Island, we see this coming and going on the ferry from the mainland to the island. I had a blast playing with these skies, really letting loose, with music blaring in the background and just enjoying the moment and the process of creating..... Now I have to see whether I can pull them together without loosing that excitement! Will play with them in the next few days and possibly do some adjustments. Today is the last day of the challenge and I did it!  I painted 30 paintings in 30 days. Not up to date with posting but will keep on posting to show them all to you. :)

*****

#26 of 30: Intoxicating

"Intoxicating" - 6x8- Oil on Birch Panel
"Intoxicante" - 15x20cm - Oleo

SOLD

Today I continued on the same route as yesterday, exploring flowers,  as I actually wanted to try yesterday's arrangement again. But I also went to backyard and collected some flowers that are still blooming.... I love flowers so much, they always make me smile! I  actually did 3 small paintings, one of them no longer exists as I wiped it and I am pleased with the other 2.  I'll post them today and tomorrow.
The smell of sweet peas is so incredible that it today not only did I have the painting experience, but also the visual pleasure of seeing them and also the smell, oh so heavenly!.... All the senses engaged. Need I say I had fun today??

*****

#25 of 30: Celebrating Friends

"Celebrating Friends" - 6x8 - Oil on Birch Panel
"Celebrando la Amistad" - 15x20cm - Oleo
SOLD

Today I wanted to work with flowers as I have had them on a vase on my dining room table for a few days and they are on their last legs. I actually wanted to do them much bigger but I knew I had limited time so I pulled out a 6x8 and tried this composition. The flowers were sitting in the vase with a beautiful elegant curve which I did not get but I am very pleased with the feel of this painting :)
May try again tomorrow! Special thanks to my friend Lisa who brought me these flowers, which is why it's getting that name :) Hugs Lisa!

*****

#24 of 30: Good Morning World!

"Good Morning World" - 16x20 - Oil on Canvas
"Buen Día Mundo!" - 40x50cm - Oleo
SOLD

Last week my friend Steve asked to buy a painting for his wife's upcoming birthday. I said sure! What do you have in mind??? So.... we started looking at the work I had available and we were debating which ones were the ones she liked when I remembered that she posts beautiful photos she takes from traveling for work and I said, well.... I have been wanting to paint some skies and I could paint something from her photos which always attracted me. So that's what we did, we picked a few  favourites  and I set to work.... except that I couldn't paint just one, I had to paint them all! I wanted them to have options :) This is one of them, which will be hanging in their living-room in a couple of weeks once it is dry! Thank you so much Steve and Suzanne for your vote of confidence, I am so glad you liked them! It was so much fun to paint this one as well as the next bunch!

I am on track on the painting side for the 30-30 but totally off with the posting! The painting is the
important part anyway!

Have a good Monday everyone!

*****

# 23 of 30: Banfield Park Boats

"Banfield Park Boats" - 11x14 - Oil on Birch Panel
"Embarcaciones en el Parque Banfield" - 28x35 - Oleo

Another one from the Spring, went out on a beautiful sunny crisp spring morning again with some friends. I decided to tackle the boats that morning and half way through the reflections and water changed of course as the wind changed. Pulled it out and worked on it, may still need to go back on it but it's done for now.  Off to birthday dinner for my son, he turned 17 yesterday! What a blessing to have him with us! Where has the time gone??

*****

#22 of 30: Marina Office

"Marina Office" - 11x14 - Oil on Canvas
"Oficina de la Marina -27x35 - Oleo

This was started back at the beginning of Spring when I went painting at Goldstream Marina  just outside of Goldstream Park.... most people don't even know this marina is there, tucked out of sight from the highway. It has a great collection of old boats and beautiful views but that day I opted to paint the marina office as I loved its colour.  Painted with Madelaine Ross, Brian Bolli and Charlie Spratt, (Charlie, come back to visit and paint with us!!) Thank you all for a great day!
I may still go back into this painting but for now, it rests. I'll for sure get a better image, I have been having great challenges in getting accurate colours, no glare, etc, etc in the photos I am taking. Always learning something new,  (or having to!)

*****

Siempre aprendiendo algo nuevo!

#21 of 30: Home Sweet Home

"Home Sweet Home" - 8x10 - Oil on Birch Panel
"Hogar, Dulce Hogar" - 20x25cm - Oleo
$160

I started this painting last July at a demo at South Shore Gallery and wasn't able to get back to it until now. I loved lots of what was happening in this painting and I like it now as well. This birdhouse  is actually in my back yard, we have quite a collection of them and I really enjoy watching the birds go in and make nests, some of them stay to actually have the babies in there, some others don't, I wonder why, I don't know enough about birds.... speaking of which I thought of hiding a birdie somewhere..... I may still do it! The colour of the leaves in  the bush behind the fence was just stunning, specially in the evening light! Looking forward to seeing that again in a  few weeks since Fall is starting toshow in many streets and gardens.

*****

#20 of 30: Somewere in Canada

"Somewhere n Canada"- 8x10 - Oil on Birch Panel
"En Algún Lugar de Canadá" - 20x25cm - Oleo

This one is also from Desolation Sound area, coming out of Princess Louisa Inlet we spent the night and celebrated Canada Day (July 1) at the mouth of Jarvis Inlet in this little bay lined with quiant summer cabins. It was a very nice place! I didn't think I was going to make it to write this post in time, it's so late..... Good night everyone!

*****

#19 of 30: Cassel Lake

"Cassle Lake" - 8x8 - Oil on Birch Panel
"Lago Cassle" - 20x20 - Oleo
$130

We are going back to Desolation Sound with this painting. At the very end of Teakere Arm, there is a waterfall and above it, Cassel Lake which is very popular with boaters in the summer.  Everybody that goes to Teakerne Arm does the short 10 min hike to the lake and jump from the rocks! We were there last July and I painted instead of swimming :)

*****

#18 of 30: Gifts from my Garden

"Gifts from the Garden" - 8x8 - Oil on Canvas
Regalos del Jardín - 20x20cm - Oleo

This was an exercise on knowing when to quit and on learning to listen .... I had very limited time to paint today and very low energy for it and instead of leaving some strokes alone, I kept making things worse and worse by trying to correct mistakes.... For today, it's time to stop :) This was painted from life, not a photograph.

"Leave your strokes alone!"  - Ted Smuskiewicz

*****

Deja tus pinceladas tranquilas! - Ted Smuskiewicz

#17 of 30: Fall at the Fort

"Fall at the Fort" - 9x12 - Oil on Cradled Panel
"Otono en el Fuerte" - 23x30 - Oleo
$250

Available through Coast Collective

Today I participated in a plein air event at Fort Rodd Hill in Colwood, We painted from 11 till 2 when we had to hand in the paintings for jurying. It was a wonderful day, the weather was just perfect and the fall colours are starting to come out. All the paintings from the event will be on display at the Juan de Fuca Rec Centre for the month of October I believe  (will confirm the length later on).
I know I missed yesterday but I actually missed posting, not painting. Had a really busy day and I just simply didn't get to it. Today, I barely have time for it again as I am headed out the door again as soon as I am done with this.  It is my 22nd wedding anniversary and we are going out to celebrate!! Yay us! I am so thankful to have such an amazing and supportive husband by my side. :) Here's to another 22!
(The colours on the painting are totally off  but I don't have the painting since it is left with the show, will have to repost once I can get a better image :)

*****

#16 of 30: A Man and His Passion

"A Man and His Passion" - 8x10 - Oil on Birch Panel
"Un Hombre y Su Pasión" - 20x25cm - Oleo
SOLD

Today is Friday so it was Plein Air morning with the Alfrescoes.... I wasn't too excited to go to Cattle Point as despite it being a gorgeous spot,  I don't find it particularly exciting to paint so I set out to do a sky study or something like that and then I turned around and BAM! There was my painting! David had set up earlier and was hard at work. He is always so easily found and recognizable because of his yellow rain coat.... Maybe I should call this painting "A Man and His Yellow Raincoat" :)  Loved painting it, it was so much fun; The composition is what I like the most. Enjoy the painting David and thank you for coming out today and being my model!! The painting is covered in dirt and will get cleaned up once the oil paint is drier.

*****

#15 of 30: Daydreaming

"Daydreaming" - 24x36 - Acryclic on Canvas
"Soñando Despierto" - 61x91cm - Acrílico

I am so enjoying this series of paintings..... Having lots of fun with building up the layers and seeing where each painting goes. Again, it needs to rest and I'll look at it again with fresh eyes in the morning.  Short and sweet today as it was a very long day packed full of appointments, meetings, painting, kitchen reno (New window is in!) and digging in the yard. Time to call it a day, good night!
PS: Halfway there!!!!

*****

#14 of 30: Dreamscape

"Dreamscape" - 24x36 - Acrylic on Canvas
"Paisaje de Ensueño - 61x91cm - Acrílico
SOLD

This painting is one of the ones I was working on yesterday, I went back into it today and even though I wanted to keep going I couldn't change too much as this painting is sold and I needed to keep lots of what the client originally saw at the half way point. I have taken it to a spot where I can live with it.... but now that I see it online.... I may have to go back in it again just a few touches.... It's very hard to capture the true colours through the photograph  (It's like I am talking to myself in the post.... bear with me please!)  :/  I hope she still likes it when I deliver it! Thank you Helen, can't wait till you see it!

*****

#13 of 30: Field of Dreams

"Fields of Dreams" - 18x24 - Oil on Canvas
 "Campos de Sueños" - 45x61cm - Oleo

Well that was FUN! Gosh, I love painting flowers and I have been dying to do it!  I have had these flower fields to finish for quite some time and I have been procrastinating to get to them..... I have gone back into them a couple of times but it wasn't happening so today I started with one and went back to jumping back and forth between paintings. I ended up  working on 3 at the same time; interestingly enough, one is oils and the other 2 are acrylics so it took some thinking as to how I was applying paint. I haven't painted in acrylics for a while and I was reminded of how nice it to work with them too. I have taken this painting today as far as I want to, I may go back tomorrow and change a couple of minor things but for now it needs to sit tight and rest.
The story behind this one is that I had help.... I started it as a demo at Sooke Fine Arts and this little girl came to my table, she was so excited with all the art and what she had created as it was kids' day at the show;  we chatted for a minute and then I asked if she wanted to paint with me and her face lit up! So I explained to her that we don't put the same colour all over, we talked about mixing greens and then she painted on my canvas. She was very pleased with herself and so was I. Thank you for helping me!

My helper, she put a few great strokes on the painting. Thank you!
Gracias!!

I'll  take this chance to show you a couple of photos from the Sooke Fine Arts Show back in July. (I had them semi ready in a post that I never did!). You can see Yours Truly and "The Secret Garden" at the show,  which is now available at Calla Design in Estevan Village, Oak Bay -  I am thrilled to have artwork in this beautiful store. Janice Long and Sue Pipes are the owners and they offer full interior design services and luxury staging. When you visit them, you will find yourself surrounded by exquisite home furnishings, local, original artwork, and an assortment of small treasures.

All set up for the demo at Sooke Fine Arts last July
"The Secret Garden"
"El Jardín Secreto"

*****

#12 of 30: Amazing Views

"Vistas Increíbles" - 23x30cm - Oleo
$215

As I mentioned yesterday, I spent the day the Art Gallery House Tour.and my home for the day was one of the house boats at Westbay Marina . I had a GREAT time, met soooo many people and this is what I painted. I cleaned it up a bit today and again, even though I know it can still have so many corrections, I want to leave it as a plein air study and maintain the original excitement and observations of the day. This was the view from the top deck on the 3rd floor from where we had well over 180 degrees views of the marina and Esquimalt-downtown waterfront all the way to the Cruise terminal. I just focused on a tiny little bit of the view.
Thank you so much to all the volunteers that made this day possible and for the invitation to participate in the event.Thank you so much to all that stopped by to chat and express how much they liked my work  and a very special thanks to Barbara and Dennis, the owners of the house for opening their home so we could all have a small taste of what life on the water may be and enjoy the fantastic views from every room of the house!!

*****

#11 of 30: Best Parking

"Best Parking" - 9x12 - Oil on Birch Panel
"El Mejor Esacionamiento" - 23x30cm - Oleo
$215

On Friday I went painting with the Alfrescoes after a long time of not being there, it was so nice to see many friendly faces :) We went to Westbay Marina in Esquimalt and the reflections early when we got there were just incredible! I took many photos for hopefully future paintings. The major challenge I had was the wind that picked up and got rid of the crystal clear reflections that attracted me to paint this scene in the first place. I am glad I had taken a photo at the beginning and was able to go back into it once back in the studio. It was for sure a matter of getting rid of the many marks I had added when it was windier.
The fact that we went to that marina on Friday was very timely because I have been invited to participate in this year's Art Gallery House Tour. Every year, a few special home in Victoria are picked and people can go and visit them.  There are artists in each of these homes. My "home" for today, Sunday Sep 11,   is a float home in this Marina actually. I'll be at #5 - 453 Head St in Esquimalt. Get a ticket, come down and visit this very special home. I was there on Friday and wow! They have the most amazing  views!

*****

Voy a estar en  #5 - 453 Head St in Esquimalt.

We are traveling a bit further North with today's painting onto Desolation Sound Marine Park. We have been to this park several times and this is the first time we stay in this cove, Prideaux Haven. It is absolutely spectacular and very peaceful even when it is busy with other boats as it is a very popular anchorage. This painting didn't have much to change but some details. One of the things about these series of paintings is that I need to remember they are plein-air sketches and when I bring them back to the studio I know I need to correct some things, add some highlights  or darken some darks but I have resist the urge to completely change the painting as then it looses the freshness of the plein air study. I need to start turning some of my favourites into more developed studio paintings..... This may be one of them :)  We were there for July 4, and the American boaters in the cove had their own Independence Day celebration! The kids on those dinghies were loving it, they had flags, balloons and music and they went all over the different coves sharing their excitement. My photos are very bad but they show a good memory!

*****

We are going to Princess Louisa Inlet with today's painting. I started this one back at the end of June  but it still needed a few touches in the studio. Such a beautiful place..... The mountains are so high and the water so deep that we were anchored and "Stern Tied" (Tied the back of the boat to shore so we don't swing) and the back of the boat was 20 feet from shore with 40 feet of water still under us. That is one of the neat things up in that area. It takes a while to get all the way this Inlet but it is well worth it! The light was disappearing quickly, most of the bay was in shade because of the height of the mountains and the last rays of sun were just highlighting the tops of the ridges with a very bright green. The photo below is when I was already finished (because of not enough light!). You can see my improvised studio on the bow of the boat :) I'd go back there in a heartbeat!

#8 of 30: Big Bar Lake

"Big Bar Lake" - 11x14 - Oil on Birch Panel
"Lago Big Bar" - 27x35cm - Oleo
$260

We are going back to the Big Bar Lake area today.... It was painted from the same field as "Afternoon at the Lake". What was interesting (and challenging  with this painting was that the sun was coming in and out all the time and it was lighting up different areas of the lake at different times so the patterns on the water were changing ALL THE TIME and every five minutes so it seemed.... The colours were incredible in that lake, from very light turquoise to very dark greens. It was a fun day painting with some good friends! The bugs were interesting too! At one point I had one that, poor thing,  landed on the oil paint and made a big path on the panel trying to get out. :( There were quite a few others that ended up adding extra texture to the painting!
