Yet another still life  with this pear I did back in January, I have a fair bit of work that I haven't posted yet so I'm slowly getting to it. I may not be posting too much though in the next couple of weeks as I am off to Hawaii for 10 days!!!  Will try to do a couple of posts from there but I'm not promising anything! I've been working so hard in the studio these last couple of months I feel I really need this holiday! I think I won't even take my oils as I usually do (gasp in horror!) I was planning to but today I was just thinking I may  just take my watercolours and  play with them a bit! Have a good couple of weeks if  we don't chat!

Otra naturaleza muerta con esta pera que pinté en Enero y no les había mostrado. Tengo bastantes cuadros que no les he mostrado y de a  poco los voy a ir compartiendo acá. Tal vez no escriba mucho estas próximas semanas ya que me voy a Hawaii por 10 días!!!  Tal vez haga un par de posts desde allá pero no les prometo nada! He estado trabajando tanto en el  taller que la verdad necesito estas vacaciones...  Creo que no voy a llevar los óleos como siempre hago, solo las acuarelas para jugar un poco, espero que tengan un buen par de semanas si no hablamos!

The reason I do still-lives like this one or the few previous ones is because doing these studies is a great way of practicing and learning for me. Painting from life, as opposed to painting from photographs, is a very different experience. The camera has already flattened out everything to 2D and it has also corrected the colours so much that you miss a tremendous amount of information when relying just on photos. I didn't use to see this, I often heard more experienced painters state that but at the time, I couldn't see it. Well, after painting from life for a while, I completely agree!  Do yourself a favour, if you are wanting to improve and learn to see differently, set up something, anything, it doesn't matter what it is, shine any light on it and just try to really observe the colours and shapes you see, not what your brain tells you to see. just look and record. You'll be happy with your discoveries. "Clementines" was painted back in January and sold at Calla Design a few weeks ago. Thank you Janice and Sue from Calla!!

La razón por la que hago estas naturalezas muertas como este o los cuadros anteriores es porque por medio de ellos yo puedo estudiar, practicar y aprender. Al pintar cosas que tenemos al frente, opuesto no pintar de fotos, es una experiencia totalmente diferente. La cámara ya ha aplastado todo para que se vea en dos dimensiones y ha corregido también muchos los colores, hay tanto cambio que uno pierde mucha información cuando usa solamente fotos. Hace un tiempo yo no entendía esto del todo,  a menudo escuchaba pintores más con más experiencia decir esto, pero no lo podía ver.  Bueno, después de pintar de cosas que tengo al frente durante un tiempo, estoy totalmente de acuerdo. Hagansé un favor, si quieren mejorar y aprender a ver las cosas de forma diferente, tomen cualquier objeto que les guste, no importa lo que sea, ilumínenlo de alguna forma y realmente traten de observar  las formas y los colores que ven, no los que su cerebro les dice que ven, simplemente miren y pongan esas formas y colores en el lienzo. Van a estar muy contentos con los descubrimientos que hacen. Pinté "Mandarinas"  también en enero y se vendió en Calla Design  hace unas semanas. Muchas gracias Janice y Sue de Calla!

Now back to our regular programming! The 30 Day Challenge is over and life is VERY busy in the studio.... I am getting  ready to be the Artist in Residency at the Coast Hotel in Downtown Victoria for the whole month of April. As such I'll be painting at the hotel several times a week and I can display my work in the hotel lobby and at the Blue Crab Restaurant. Both are large and will take a lot of pieces so I am busy as a bee  creating new ones and selecting the ones that will be part of the exhibition. There is so much more than than just painting to showing and selling your work....   but I will get into that in other posts. For now, I am showing you the first painting I did this 2018. I had decided to do a whole bunch of still-lifes, some of  which I haven't posted yet but I am happy to say have already sold. Thank you Calla Design  for selling this one!

Ahora volvemos a la programación  regular! El Desafíio de 30 Días ha terminado y sigue habiendo en el taller un remolino de actividad.... Me estoy preparando para ser la Artista Residente en el Hotel Coast en el centro de Victoria durante todo el mes de Abril. Voy a pintar en el hotel varios días a la semana y voy a poder mostrar mi arte en el lobby del hotel y en el Restaurat Blue Crab,  hacen falta bastantes cuadros para llenar los dos lugares ya que son muy grandes por lo que estoy creando nuevos cuadros y seleccionando los que voy a incluir en esa muestra. Hay tanto mas que hacer que pintar  cuado uno exhibe y vende.... pero les cuento eso de a poco en otros posts. Por ahora, les muestro el primer cuadro que hice este 2018. Había decidido hacer  una serie de naturalezas muertas muy simples  que no les he mostrado todavía pero que por suerte ya se han vendido. Gracias Calla Design  por haber vendido esta!

Wow, time flies when you are having fun! Today is the last day of the challenge and I am both happy and sad about that of course. About this painting, when I went to the store to get pears for painting back then I was amazed at how many different varieties we have, unfortunately, I can't say I got to taste them all and their differences as a few of them needed to go in the compost after posing for a while!! I had done this painting at the beginning of the challenge but they had needed a bit of TLC back then. Well in the last couple of days they got as much TLC as they will ever get, happy with some things about it, not so with some others but for now, challenge done! Thank you for following along and cheering on, it always means a lot of course, Thank you!

Wow, cómo pasa el tiempo cuando uno se divierte! Hoy es el último día del desafío y estoy como siempre contenta y triste a la vez. Cuando fui al supermercado a comprar peras para pintar no me había dado cuenta que hay tantas variedades distintas, desfortunadamente, no puedo decir que las he probado a todas ya que una cuantas tuvieron que ir a la pila de compost después de posar tantos días!! Había empezado este cuadrito al comienzo del desafío y le hacía falta un poco mas, estos últimos dos días volví a trabajar en él un poquito y  he echo todo lo que voy a hacer, no estoy convencida del todo, hay cosas que me gustan y otras que no pero por ahora, listo! Desafío terminado! Gracias a todos por haberme seguido y alentado todo el mes, se los agradezco de corazón, Gracias!

So I did another painting of these strawberries, just moved them a bit and got going with them. Continuing with the Berry  Saga, it seems to me they have sorted out their differences and they are standing a bit closer to each other..... Phew! Fight averted! See Here for Episode 1
It's interesting  to see the process I follow, typically I'll be working and I feel it still needs a lot to go but so many times I step back and voila! it's done!! Here I felt I still needed to keep adding some reds but when I put it next to the other one and off the easel, it looked just fine to me!

Hice otro cuadro con las frutillas, las moví un poquito y empecé a pintar.... Continuando con la saga, me parece que  han arreglado las cosas y ya están un poco mas cerca la una de la otra.... Phew! Se evadió la pelea esta vez! Vean acá el episodio 1

Es interesante observar el proceso que sigo, típicamente, estoy pintando y me parece que me falta mucho para terminar pero muchas veces, una vez que paro, tomo un poco de distancia y voilá! está terminado! En este caso me parecía que tenía que seguir agregando  distintos tonos de rojo pero cuando la saqué del atril y la puse junto al cuadro anterior me di cuenta que ya estaba!

Back to still-life for the last few days of the challenge so I went to the fridge and picked from what we had available. :) When I was posing these strawberries it seemed to me that they had their backs to each other and were in the middle of an argument..... one of them is saying "We should start talking and try to make things work.....'  Must be losing my mind if strawberries are starting to say stuff  .... haha.... just having fun in the studio!

Decidí volver a las naturalezas muertas los últimos días del desafío así que fui a la heladera y me fijé que teníamos disponible. Cuando estaba arreglando estas frutillas para pintarlas, me pareció que estaban paradas de espaldas discutiendo .... y una de ellas decía "Tenemos que empezar a hablar....." y tratar de arreglar las cosas... debo estar medio loca si las frutillas están empezando a hablar , jaja!.... simplemente me estoy diviertiendo en el taller!!

I have been on a kick lately painting simple still lives using seasonal fruits. I did several pomegranates, mandarin oranges and now I'm onto pears! So the other day I went to the grocery store and got several different kinds of pears, one of each, just to paint them. I hope to be done with them in time to eat them as well! I am really having fun exploring the different colours and shapes they have and specially trying to record accurate colour and light.

Ultimamente he estado pintado  naturalezas muertas simples usando frutas de estación. Hice varias estas úlimas semanas con granadas, mandarinas y ahora me tocan las peras! Por eso, el otro día fui al supermercado, busqué muchas variedades distintas de peras y compré una de cada tipo, sólo para pintarlas. Espero terminar con ellas antes de que se pongan feas para poder comerlas también!! La verdad es que estoy disfrutado mucho explorando los distintos colores y formas que tienen, especialmente tratando de registrar color y luz apropiado.

Ready, Set, Go!!!

Once again I am joining hundreds of artists all over the wold to do the 30 Paintings in 30 days Challenge hosted by Leslie Saeta. At the same time, our local art supply store is hosting the Opus Daily Practice challenge so I qualify for both! :)
I'll be painting in oils on birch panels or cradled panels, I'm trying them without gesso, just with GAC 100 so I leave the wood grain showing, just experimenting on different surfaces. This time, I'll follow a couple of themes: simple still lifes in the studio to practice my observation skills and  the other one is doing small studies of BC landscapes I want to paint larger. So many times we think a certain image will make a good painting only to discover half way through it that indeed it was NOT that interesting after all, specially when blown up big. So, it seems to be a good time to do that as I am working on a body of work that shows how I see this beautiful landscape I am surrounded by.

Maybe you feel inspired to do it yourself?? Doesn't have to be a prefect painting, it could be a drawing, a sketch or a collection of bad paintings that may help make you better painter!! Nuevamente me uno a cientos de artistas de todo el mundo para hacer el Desafío de 30 cuadros en en 30 días organizado por Leslie Saeta. Al mismo tiempo nuestro negocio de arte local está organizando otro desafio similar: Práctica Diaria de Opus,  así que estoy contenta de calificar para los dos.

Voy a pintar con oleos sobre paneles de madera. Estoy probando algo nuevo, pintar sin la base de gesso sino sólo con un par de capas de GAC 100 para que se vea la madera. Esta vez voy a seguir un par de temas distintos: naturalezas muertas simples en el taller para practicar mi habilidad de observación y el otro es hacer pequeños estudios de paisajes de British Columbia que quiero pintar más grandes. Tantas veces pensamos que una cierta imagen va a ser un buen cuadro solo para darnos cuenta a medio camino que lo que creíamos iba ser algo interesante, no lo es, especialmente cuando lo pintamos más grande. Así que me parece una buena idea hacer estos estudios ya que quiero hacer una serie que muestra como yo veo este paisaje tan hermoso de que estoy rodeada. Voy a poner mis trabajos aquí en este blog a diario como así también en mi página de Facebook y de Instagram, Pueden seguir mi proceso y compartir!

Si sos artista, tal vez te sientas inspirado para hacerlo tú mismo? No tiene que ser un cuadro perfecto puede ser un dibujo, un bosquejo o una colección de unos cuantos cuadros  malos que te van ayudar a ser un pintor mejor. La meta es desarrollar el hábito de ir al estudio todos los días, la práctica ayuda a la perfección o mejor dicho la práctica hace que uno mejore seguro! Así que....  qué dicen… Lo hacen? Sigan los links que puse arriba para encontrar más información o para anotarse en los distintos desafíos.

Este es el segundo cuadro echo del mismo ramo, la misma luz y fondo pero una vista diferente. Se pueden hacer muchos cuadros del mismo ramo, simplement hay que ponerlo en distinta posición y verlo desde otro punto de vista! Welcome Home!

You may remember that in January I went to Barcelona to help my daughter get set up for a semester at a university there. At the time, it seemed that August, when she was scheduled to come back,  would never come but of course, time flies and she is already home. She got back 15 days ago and it has been wonderful to have her here. Needless to say I was anxiously waiting for her....I cleaned and freshened up her room and gathered a bunch of fresh flowers from the yard to put on her nightstand. This is it..... It was great to get back to doing a painting like this one, from direct observation, such good exercise. I may try to do from direct observation as much as I can for the 30 Day Challenge, whether it's a still life or a plein air painting. I wasn't actually happy with it the day I did it but I was starting to add meaningless strokes so I knew it was time to stop.  When I came back into the studio the following day I said:  "Hmmmm...  It's not as bad as I thought it was!!" So many times it's a matter of  putting some distance and letting the painting and yourself rest for a while, always good to see the work with fresh eyes!

Tal vez ustedes recuerden que en Enero fui a Barcelona a ayudar a mi hija ya que ella iba a estudiar un semestre en una universidad de esa ciudad. En su momento parecía que Agosto, el mes de su regreso, nunca llegaría… Pero por supuesto el tiempo vuela y ella ya está en casa.  Llegó hace 15 días y ha sido realmente maravilloso tenerla en casa…. Por supuesto que no hace falta que diga que yo la esperaba con ansiedad… Limpié y ordené su habitación, junté un ramo de flores de mi jardín y las puse en su mesa de luz. Éste es ese ramo… Fue muy bueno volver a  pintar un cuadro como este, de observación directa, tan buen ejercicio. Tal vez trate de hacer varios cuadros o los que mas pueda de esta forma en el desafío de 30 días, ya sea una naturaleza muerta o pintado al aire libre. La verdad es que no estaba muy contenta con este cuadro cuando lo había terminado,  estaba empezando a agregar un montón de pinceladas sin sentido y entonces supe que era momento de parar. Cuando volví a entrar al taller al día siguiente dije: "Hmm...  no está tan malo como creía!"  Muchas veces es cuestión de poner cierta distancia entre el cuadrado y el pintor, simplemente descansar un poco y ver las cosas de forma diferente. 
Nos vemos mañana de nuevo para el comienzo del desafío de 30 en 30!! Si no saben de que estoy hablando pueden ver aquí :)  Todavía hay tiempo de anotarse.... esto es para los amigos artistas!

This painting got a makeover and I am much happier with it! I had done it last year and hadn't truly finished it.  I went back in, added lights and darks, got rid a couple of flowers that weren't working and added a few other touches. It seems I was not the only one that liked it as it sold during the Studio Tour as well! Enjoy it Monica!

Este cuadro recibió algunos cambios y estoy mucho mas contenta con los resultados! Lo había pintado el año pasado y no estaba completamente satisfecha. Le agregué luces y sombras, corté unas flores que no resultaban, puse otras ..... Parece que no fui la única que estuvo contenta con el cuadro ya que se vendió en el tour de la semana pasada! This plum tree is actually not on my yard but we enjoy a few branches that come over the fence from the neighbours' yard, I think we even got to enjoy some plums last year.... the shame is that they don't pick them!!
This painting will be among the new pieces I will share with you at the 2017 Hills to Shore Artists Tour on May 13&14, 11 to 4 pm, rain or shine, hoping for shine. My home studio at 3876A Finnerty Rd., It's the house at the end of the long driveway!! Hope to see you then!

Este ciruelo no está en mi patio sino en la casa de un vecino pero podemos disfrutamos de varias ramas que van por arriba de la cerca. Creo que el verano pasado hasta cosechamos algunas ciruelas.... es un apena que los dueños no las comen!!
Este va a ser uno de los cuadros que voy a mostrar durante el Tour de Talleres el 13 y 14 de Mayo de 11 a 4, esperemos tener buen tiempo :)  El taller en mi casa, Calle Finnerty 3876A, la tercera casa desde la calle! Espero verlos!

Spring has been late to Victoria this year but it looks like it's finally here! For the last several weeks I have been painting flowers from my garden and Spring scenes I  see everywhere in the city.  At the very start the season I can enjoy from my bedroom and bathroom windows the most beautiful sight of an ornamental cherry tree in bloom..... it's a huge pink mass that puts a smile on my face every single time I sew it! One day a couple of weeks ago I cut a few blossoms, brought them up to the studio to be my subject and enjoyed its smell until the petals just withered and fell off ..... I love spring and witnessing everything starting to grow!

 La primavera está lerda en llegar a Victoria este año pero parece que finalmente está aquí! Estas últimas semanas he estado pintando flores de mi jardín y escenas primaverales que encuentro por toda la ciudad. Al comienzo de la temporada siempre puedo disfrutar  desde las ventanas de mi baño y mi dormitorio una vista hermosísima de un cerezo ornamental en flor, es una masa rosada increíble que me hace sonreir cada vez que lo veo! Esta es una de las primeras señales de que finalmente el invierno se está acabando. Ese día hace unas semanas corté unas cuantas ramas, las traje al taller para pintarlas y disfrute de su aroma hasta que los pétalos se secaron y cayeron… Como me gusta la primavera y observar como todo comienza a crecer!

This was another painting following along the same lines as the previous one and in the whole series of flowers from life. The colour of this dahlia was quite particular and I think I actually managed to get that pretty well. I made the mistake though of placing the vase too close to the sides of the board and when I went to put it in a frame, it didn't look right at all, the composition didn't quite work out.... so this ends up being just a study where as always I learnt a lot. Sometimes they work sometimes they don't!  :)

Éste es otro de los cuadros que sigue en el mismo estilo de los anteriores y que forman parte de la serie de flores pintadas. El color de esta Dalia era bastante particular y creo que en realidad logre conseguirlo bastante bien. Sin embargo cometí el error de colocar el florero demasiado cerca de los costados del panel por lo tanto cuando le quise poner un marco, no se veía bien para nada, la composición en realidad no funciona. Esto termina siendo simplemente un estudio con el que aprendí muchísimo como siempre.  A veces funcionan, a veces no! :)

At the end of September I painted a couple of small florals from life at the end of the 30 Paintings in 30 Days Challenge. I loved painting them and as always I learn so much through the process of painting from life and not photos that  I have continued with the same format a few more times. These beautiful rusty hydrangeas were brought to Coast Collective by Evol, a sweet wonderful artist who ALWAYS brings flowers to have on display. Last time I was there for a demo, I knew she would have taken flowers as she always does, so I didn't even bother bringing anything else to paint. Very happy with how they turned out! Thank you Evol!!!

A fines de septiembre pinté unos cuantos cuadros de flores como parte del final del desafío de 30 cuadros en 30 días. Me encanta pintarlos y como siempre aprendo tanto del  proceso de pintar de cosas reales, no de fotos, he continuado con ese mismo formato varias veces. Estas hermosas hortensias  estaban en Coast Collective. Evol, que es una artista maravillosa,  SIEMPRE trae flores para tener en el mostrador. La última vez que estuve ahí para hacer una demostración, yo sabía que ella iba a tener flores ahí, asi es que ni me molesté en traer algo diferente para pintar. Estoy muy contenta con cómo salieron! Gracias Evol!!

Today I wanted to work with flowers as I have had them on a vase on my dining room table for a few days and they are on their last legs. I actually wanted to do them much bigger but I knew I had limited time so I pulled out a 6x8 and tried this composition. The flowers were sitting in the vase with a beautiful elegant curve which I did not get but I am very pleased with the feel of this painting :)

May try again tomorrow! Special thanks to my friend Lisa who brought me these flowers, which is why it's getting that name :) Hugs Lisa!

Hoy quise jugar con flores ya que las tengo en un florero en mi mesa del comedor desde hace varios días y están ya en las últimas. En realidad las quería pintar mucho más grande pero sabía que tenía muy poco tiempo hoy así que saqué un panel de 15 × 20cm  y probé esta composición. Las flores estaban en el florero con una curva hermosa muy elegante que lamentablemente no salió en este cuadro pero de todas formas estoy muy contenta con cómo quedó. Probablemente trate de nuevo mañana! Gracias muy especiales a mi amiga Lisa que fue la que me trajo estas flores, por eso es que le puse ese nombre al cuadro :) Un abrazo Lisa

This was an exercise on knowing when to quit and on learning to listen .... I had very limited time to paint today and very low energy for it and instead of leaving some strokes alone, I kept making things worse and worse by trying to correct mistakes.... For today, it's time to stop :) This was painted from life, not a photograph.

Este fue un ejercicio en saber cuando parar y en aprender a escuchar..... tenía poco tiempo y estaba cansada y en lugar de dejar las pinceladas tranquilas, seguí empeorando todo al tratar de corregir errores.... Por hoy, es hora de parar. :) Esto fue pintado no de foto si no de un ramo de verdad.

Day 22 of 30: Silver Bits

I made a mistake today.... I looked at the weather forecast to decide whether to go plein air painting with the Al Frescoes.... After yesterdays rain, it called for more today, it was very dark too at 8 so I decided to stay in the studio. Well.... wouldn't you know it that by 10 it was not only not raining but wide open blue skies. Speaking of skies, one of the artists from the Al Frescoes organized  at the University a a talk on clouds. I went this afternoon (I live right next to Uvic) and enjoyed, it was very informative, hopefully what I heard today translates somehow onto the canvas.....
Today I went back to painting from a live bouquet my friend brought over last weekend! She knew that I would end up painting it..... it took me a few days to get to it but in the end I tackled it. What attracted me the most to it were the silvery blue eucaliptus leaves in there, absolutely love them. The painting is 100% resolved but it's close.

Hoy cometí un error.... me fijé en el pronóstco del tiempo  para decidir si ir a pintar con los AlFrescoes o no.... Después de la lluvia de ayer, hoy se pronosticaba mas lluvia, estaba oscuro a las 8 de la mañana y decidí quedarme a pintar en el taller. Por supuesto a eso de las 10, no sólo había parado de llover  sino que había salido el sol y estaba el cielo azul,  totalmente despejado. Hablando de cielos, uno de los artistas de los Al Frescoes organizó en la universidad una charla sobre nubes. Fui esta tarde (vivo al lado de la uviversidad) y la disfruté mucho. Espero que lo que escuché hoy de alguna forma se transfiera a mis cuadros....
Hoy volví a pintar de una ramo que una amiga me trajo el fin de semana! Ella sabía que lo iba a terminar pintando, tardé unos cuantos días en hacerlo pero finalmente decidí atarcarlo. Lo que me atrajo de entrada para pintar esto fueron las ramas de eucaliptus, me encantan. El cuadro no está totalmente resuelto pero está cerca.
