Ready, Set, Go!!!

Once again I am joining hundreds of artists all over the wold to do the 30 Paintings in 30 days Challenge hosted by Leslie Saeta. At the same time, our local art supply store is hosting the Opus Daily Practice challenge so I qualify for both! :)
I'll be painting in oils on birch panels or cradled panels, I'm trying them without gesso, just with GAC 100 so I leave the wood grain showing, just experimenting on different surfaces. This time, I'll follow a couple of themes: simple still lifes in the studio to practice my observation skills and  the other one is doing small studies of BC landscapes I want to paint larger. So many times we think a certain image will make a good painting only to discover half way through it that indeed it was NOT that interesting after all, specially when blown up big. So, it seems to be a good time to do that as I am working on a body of work that shows how I see this beautiful landscape I am surrounded by.

Maybe you feel inspired to do it yourself?? Doesn't have to be a prefect painting, it could be a drawing, a sketch or a collection of bad paintings that may help make you better painter!! The pont is to develop the habit of  going into the studio every single day, practice makes perfect, or practice makes better for sure! so what do you say.... are you in??? Nuevamente me uno a cientos de artistas de todo el mundo para hacer el Desafío de 30 cuadros en en 30 días organizado por Leslie Saeta. Al mismo tiempo nuestro negocio de arte local está organizando otro desafio similar: Práctica Diaria de Opus,  así que estoy contenta de calificar para los dos.

Voy a pintar con oleos sobre paneles de madera. Estoy probando algo nuevo, pintar sin la base de gesso sino sólo con un par de capas de GAC 100 para que se vea la madera. Esta vez voy a seguir un par de temas distintos: naturalezas muertas simples en el taller para practicar mi habilidad de observación y el otro es hacer pequeños estudios de paisajes de British Columbia que quiero pintar más grandes. Tantas veces pensamos que una cierta imagen va a ser un buen cuadro solo para darnos cuenta a medio camino que lo que creíamos iba ser algo interesante, no lo es, especialmente cuando lo pintamos más grande. Así que me parece una buena idea hacer estos estudios ya que quiero hacer una serie que muestra como yo veo este paisaje tan hermoso de que estoy rodeada. Voy a poner mis trabajos aquí en este blog a diario como así también en mi página de Facebook y de Instagram, Pueden seguir mi proceso y compartir!

Si sos artista, tal vez te sientas inspirado para hacerlo tú mismo? No tiene que ser un cuadro perfecto puede ser un dibujo, un bosquejo o una colección de unos cuantos cuadros  malos que te van ayudar a ser un pintor mejor. La meta es desarrollar el hábito de ir al estudio todos los días, la práctica ayuda a la perfección o mejor dicho la práctica hace que uno mejore seguro! Así que....  qué dicen… Lo hacen? Sigan los links que puse arriba para encontrar más información o para anotarse en los distintos desafíos.

30 in 30 September 2017: Done!!!

Wow, I did it! It always amazes me at the end when I see all the work together.... This time I didn't set out to do all landscapes but it went that way with the explorations into different landscapes formats and compositions I did at the beginning of the month and then with the trip to Yellowknife and Arctic Haven. I did finish well over 30 paintings this past 30 days but unfortunately because of traveling and wifi/internet availability  or lac there of, I wasn't always able to post in a timely fashion.... All in all, I leanrt a lot again and I have the beginnings of a couple of different series I am very excited about: BC landscapes in large scale and Fall Scenes at the moment, inspired by the visit up  North. It's interesting that Fall hasn't really started here yet and I am all warmed up and ready to go!

Wow, lo logré! Siempre me maravilla al final cuando veo  todo el trabajo junto.... Esta vez, no tuve la intención de hacer sólo paisajes pero fue así como se desarrolló con las exploraciones de paisajes en distintas composiciones y formatos que hice al cominezo del mes y con el viaje a Yellowknife y Arctic Haven. Completé (o comencé con detalles por terminar) mucho mas de 30 cuadros este mes pero debido a días de viaje o falta de internet no pude publicarlos  cuado debía.... Como conclusión, aprendí mucho de nuevo y tengo los comienzos de un par de series nuevas: Paisajes de Bristish Columbia en gran escala y Escenas de Otoño. Es interesante que este año puedo disfrutar del otoño mas timepo ya que empecé hace unas semanas en el norte y todavía no ha llegado a Victoria pero ya he echo el pre-calentamiento y  estoy lista para seguir!
Gracias de corazón por todo el apoyo este mes y siempre  acá, en Facebook, Instagram  o por mensajes privados. Significan mucho para mi!

Once back in Yellowknife, Deborah and I had 2 full days of painting left so we made good use of them and set out to find a good spot. We ended up by the airport  and found Fred Henne Park with beautiful yellow trees sitting on pink/orangey rocks which are part of the Canadian Shield.
It was so interesting to see how the colours on the trees had changed in just 6 days we had been gone from there! Fall had certainly arrived in the NWT!  I  still have to play with this set of paintings but I am very pleased with what I did as I learnt a lot about editing. Originally I had a whole bunch more trees on the left side I had included in the larger piece, then at the last minute I decided to take them out and it made the whole painting so much stronger! So many times less is more.... have to remember that!

Una vez de vuelta en Yellowknife, Deborah  y yo tuvimos 2 mas días completos de pintura y los aprovechamos bien! Terminamos encontrando un lugar que nos gustó cerca del aeropueto en el Parque Fred Henne con muchos árboles muy amarillos sobre piedras naranjas y rosadas que forman parte de la Plataforma Canadiense. Fue tan interesante ver el cambio de color de los árboles en sólo  6 días, el otoño si que había llegado a los Territorios del NorOeste!! Todavía tengo que jugar con estos dos cuadros pero estoy muy contenta con ellos ya que aprendí mucho sobre "editar" lo que tengo adelante. Originalmente había incluído mas árboles en la parte izquierda del cuadro mas grande. A último momento decidí sacarlos y cambió completamente! Mucho mejor, a veces menos es más!

This was our last day on Arctic Haven on Ennadai Lake. Deborah and myself painted to the bitter end..... stayed by the lodge and armed with bear spray we set out to paint close by at  the end of the point. It was a great farewell to a very full week. We made new friends, shared meals, laughs and our love for painting and adventures.
For the last 45 min I was by myself and at the beginning I was very happy painting away but after about 30 min I realized I was more checking over my shoulder to make sure there wasn't a bear approaching so I ended just packing it all up and leaving. As always, I am going to look at them all again now that I am back at the studio.
Awesome end to quite an unforgettable experience! Thank you Arctic Haven, everyone was so welcoming. All the guides were extremely passionate about what they do and the place. It was really delightful to listen to them share their experiences and knowledge.
Deborah and myself continued on to Yellowknife where we painted for 2 more days.... coming up next!

Este fue nuestro último día en Arctic Haven en  el Lago Ennadai. Deborah y yo pintamos hasta el final… Nos quedamos cerca de la cabaña y armadas con spray para osos salimos a pintar en una península cerca. Fue una gran despedida para una semana muy disfrutada. Conocimos amigos nuevos, compartimos comidas risas y nuestra pasión por las aventuras. Espero poder continuar con muchas de estas amistades.

Durante los últimos 45 minutos pintando estuve sola y al principio estaba bien pintando pero después de una media hora me di cuenta que estaba más que nada controlando a ver si venía un oso y ya no prestaba atención a la pintura así que guarde todo y volví a la cabaña. Como siempre voy a mirar todos estos cuadros de nuevo ahora que estoy de vuelta en mi taller.

A sido un gran final para una experiencia inolvidable. Gracias Arctic Haven, estoy muy agradecida ya que  todos nos recibieron tan bien. Todos los guías eran extremadamente apasionados de lo que hacen y del lugar y fue realmente hermoso escucharlos compartir sus experiencias y conocimiento.

Deborah y yo continuamos hacia Yellowknife donde pintamos durante dos días más, que se los voy a mostrar la próxima vez.

How did it get to be the end of the year already??? Wow, time sure flies..... the last couple of months just completely disappeared in front of my eyes!

I will make it very short as it is Christmas Eve... I have had an AMAZING year in 2016. I have worked hard, painted lots, had tons of fun in the meantime. Many, many paintings found new homes which is always the icing on the cake. Thank you, thank you, thank you to all who bought paintings to take home or give away! It really means a lot to me.

I am also extremely grateful for all the new connections that happened this year, at all levels: meeting new people, finding new ways, visiting new places, painting with new people and at different events, the list goes on and on. Every single experience has really enriched my life tremendously. Thank you all so much for being part of it.

As usual in January Leslie Saeta hosts the 30 Day Painting Challenge that I usually take part in. I am not sure I'll be able to do it this year as I'll be traveling for great part of the month. BUT..... as it's really hard for me to pass a challenge.... the idea I have at the moment is to draw and sketch during those travels instead of painting. It's more portable, I need the drawing practice (who doesn't?) and it will be a great way of documenting the trip.  I guess you'll have to follow and see where I go ;) ..... To do that, simply follow me on Facebook, Instagram or my blog where I will be posting daily. If you are an artist, please join me! I  can assure you it sounds daunting but it truly is a wonderful way to start the year! (Click Here for more information on the challenge )

Cómo es que ya hemos llegado al final de año? Wow, el tiempo vuela… Especialmente este último par de meses ha desaparecido completamente para mí.

He tenido un año increíble en el 2016, he trabajado mucho, he pintado muchísimo y me he divertido muchísimo en el camino… Muchos cuadros encontraron hogares nuevos que es siempre muy especial. Gracias, gracias, gracias a todos los que compraron cuadros para llevar a sus hogares o para regalar! Realmente eso significa mucho para.

También estoy extremadamente agradecida por toda las nuevas conexiones que ocurrieron este año, a todo nivel: conocer gente nueva, descubrir nuevas formas, visitar nuevos lugares, pintar con nuevos compañeros y en distintos eventos, la lista sigue y sigue. Cada una de las experiencias realmente me ha enriquecido la vida tremendamente. Gracias a todos ustedes por ser parte de ello.

Como siempre en enero Leslie Saeta organiza el Desafío de 30 cuadros en 30 días el cual yo  normalmente participo. No estoy segura si lo voy a poder hacer este año ya que voy a estar viajando gran parte del mes. Pero… como no puedo pasar un desafío, la idea que tengo en este momento dibujar y hacer bosquejos mientras viajo. Es más fácil de transportar, necesito la práctica (quién no la necesita?) y va a ser una gran forma de documentar el viaje. Me parece que van a tener que seguirme y ver hacia donde voy… Para hacer eso, simplemente síganme en  Facebook, Instagram o aquí mismo, donde voy a mostrar lo que hago a diario. Wow! Time flies when you are having fun! I have been meaning to write on the blog and finally post some of the paintings I have done this summer but time has gone by and here we are..... Sep. 1.... But I did warn you in the ast one that I was on holiday mode kind of thing for the blog.

I have been busy with many things: spending time with my daughter before she went back to Vancouver for her second year of Interior Design,  we have gone out ont he boat, we have finaled designs for renovating some parts of our house (kitchen, bathroom.....), I have been painting, shipping paintings and travelling a bit. Today I am writing this from Lake Tahoe.... Yes!!! What an amazing place this is! My good friend Tara, invited me to come with her as she has a conference to attend here so while she is busy in her meetings I have been painting. There are so many paintings here! 

I am not going to make this post super long but mainly I want to let you know that I am planning to participate again in the "30 Paintings in 30 Days Challenge" put on by Leslie Saeta that starts tomorrow.... I have done it several times and love it.  I am inviting you to either paint along (yes, there's still time for you to sign up) or follow me along through this blog, my Facebook or Instagram..... So, here we go....!

Wow!! Cómo pasa el tiempo cuando uno se está divirtiendo!! Hace bastante tiempo que quiero escribir en el blog y finalmente publicar algunos de los cuadros que hecho este verano pero el tiempo ha pasado demasiado rápido y acá estamos… El 1 de septiembre ya… He estado ocupada con muchas cosas: disfrutando con mi hija antes de que se fuera a Vancouver para empezar el segundo año de diseño de interiores, salidas en el velero, finalizando diseños para renovar algunas partes de nuestra casa como en la cocina baño, he  estado pintando, despachando pinturas y viajando un poco: hoy les escribo esto desde Lake Tahoe! Si!! Qué hermoso lugar!!!Mi buena amiga Tara me invitó a venir con ella ya que ella tiene una conferencia así que mientras ella está en sus reuniones  yo he salido a pintar....  hay tantos cuadros acá!

No voy a hacer este post demasiado largo pero principalmente les quiero contar que estoy planeando participar en el Desafío de 30 Cuadros en 30 Días organizado por Leslie Saeta… Lo he hecho varias veces y me encanta. Today I  painted at Coast Collective. I came out to demo and this is what I created. I have been wanting to do some skyscapes for a a while so this is a small one to start with.  I would like to try one  really large, get lost in the brushstrokes  and see what happens.

Hoy pinté en Coast Collective. Vine a hacer una demostración y esto es lo que creé. Hace bastante tiempo que quiero pintar cielos y este uno pequeño para empezar.  Me gustaría pintarlos grande grande, perderme en las pinceladas y ver cómo sale.

Well.... I can't say that I did super well, managed to do 9 zentangles only but it is better than none which was what I thought I would be able to do at the beginning of December. I did do as well a whole bunch of sketches and drawings that I never posted. More important than anything, I learnt something new that I am sure I'll be able to apply in my artwork.
Thank you for your support and encouragement. It was wonderful to follow the posts of so many artists that jumped right in and were able to play with their art for a concentrated period of time. I do believe it does make a big difference in the quality of what you produce as an artist. Thank you Leslie Saeta for hosting it again. I hope you decide to do it again in September!

Bueno..... No puedo decir que anduve bárbaro, alcancé  a hacer 9 zentangles solamente pero es mejor que nada, que es lo que creí que iba a poder hacer en realidad al principio de Diciembre. Hice también varios dibujos y bosquejos que nunca publiqué. Lo mas importante de todo es que aprendí algo nuevo que estoy segura voy a poder aplicar en mi arte.
Gracias a todos por el apoyo y aliento. Fue maravilloso seguir el progreso de tantos artistas que participaron y jugaron con su arte durante este periodo concentrado e intenso. Estoy convencida de que mejora la calidad del arte que producimos como artistas. Gracias Leslie Saeta por haber organizado este desafio de nuevo, espero que lo hagamos de nuevo en Septiembre!

I have been drawing but I haven't been posting. Life has changed again:  we are readjusting to being back home and Mateo, my son, getting slowly back into school. I am mainly a schedule coordinator and taxi driver now! (Which is a great thing, I am not complaining! He is doing extremely well, re-inserting back into regular life!) The thing is that I am running on a very low battery these days, probably just the stress of it all catching up with me so even when I may have the time to paint here and there, honestly I don't have the energy for it at the moment.  Have been drawing and sketching though and enjoying it.

He estado dibujando pero no estado esribiendo en el blog. La vida ha cambiado de nuevo ahora que mi hijo Mateo ya no está en el hospital, está de vuelta en casa y recomenzando de nuevo muy lentamente con la escuela. Ahora yo soy coordinadora de horarios y taxista! (lo que es buenísimo, no me quejo! Está excepcionalmente bien, re insertandose en la vida normal) La cosa es que ando con pocas baterías estos días, probablemente el estrés de todo lo que he vivido en los últimos dos meses.  A pesar de tener un poquito de tiempo disponible no tengo energía para pintar honestamente. Sí he estado dibujando y haciendo bosquejos y lo estoy disfrutando mucho.


I started this zentangle (the one below) a few days ago and I was really liking it until towards the end  I chose the wrong pattern. It completely changed the look of it all and I didn't like it too much any more  but I learnt a lot about  transitioning from one pattern to another. I also chose to leave the sides straight which made it very static.

Comencé este zentangle hace unos días (el que está abajo) y me estaba gustando hasta que casi al final le agregué el diseño equivocado. Cambió el dibujo por completo y no me gustó más pero aprendí mucho sobre cómo hacer funcionar las transiciones de un diseño a otro. Además había decidido que los costados fueran derechos lo que hizo que todo fuera muy estático.

Then I said ok, I like some of what happened here so I started again using those elements I liked, changed a few things and thought putting the one at the top was a great idea...... hmmmm, not so much. It gave me the instant feeling of oppression and barb wire (who knows where that came from, but it makes me think of a chicken coop!)  See the photo below.

Así que dije bueno, me gustan algunas de las cosas que pasaron acá y comencé otro usando esos elementos que me habían gustado, cambié algunas cosas y me pareció que usar el diseño de arriba era una gran idea.... Hmmmmm, no tanto. Me dió la sensación de opresión y alambrado (quien sabe de donde salió esa idea, me hace pensar en un gallinero!) Es la imagen de abajo.

Finalmente decidí hacerlo de nuevo y así es como llegue al que esta arriba de la página, el que me gusta . Qué les parece? Cual les gusta mas y les hacen pensar en algo en especial?

 This is my favourite so far... I was trying to use organic shapes and landscape as inspiration and I ended up with this design that makes me think of the ocean and under water. In order to learn about zentangling I have been following a book called "One Zentangle a Day" by Beckah Krahula. I am going through the chapters, learning new patterns and then producing a daily (or not so daily) zentangle. There is wealth of information on internet of course for anyone interested in starting out. Wouldn't some of these designs look great incorporated into semi abstract larger mixed media pieces???? Hmmmm...... My wheels are turning!

(Update on my son: He is is doing SOOOO well. We may know tomorrow his discharge date from the hospital, it was tentatively booked for Feb 5 but he is doing so we've been told they will move it earlier. He started today doing some school work, we will see how he does and progressively increase the load. He is walking without crutches and we see light at the end of the tunnel. Life is good :)

Este es mi favorito hasta ahora. Estaba tratando de usar formas orgánicas y el paisaje como inspiración y terminé con este diseño que me hace pensar en el océano y todo debajo del agua.  Para aprender sobre el "Zentangle" estoy siguiendo un libro que se llama "Un Zentangle por Día" por Becka Krahula. Hago los capítulos, aprendo nuevos diseños y produzco un zentagle diario (o no tan diario). No estarían muy buenos algunos de estos diseños incorporados a trabajos semi abstractos mas grandes????? Hmmmm....... se me vienen un montón de ideas!

(Noticias de mi hijo: anda TAN bien!!! Mañana tal vez sepamos si le dan de alta en los próximos días, esa fecha estaba tentativamente marcada para el 5 de Febrero pero como anda tan bien, nos han dicho que van a adelantar esa fecha. Hoy él comenzó a hacer un poco de deberes para la escuela, vamos a ver cómo responde y  si se puede de a poco aumentar la cantidad. Está ya caminando sin muletas ni bastones y finalmente vemos la luz al final del tunel. La vida es buena. :)

This is today's offering. I wanted to use the same main "characters" as yesterday, I wasn't happy with one particular tangle I had added and I wanted to explore them further. It's ok but I don't love it. The name today comes from a moment this evening. While I was sitting here doing this tangle, my son was next to me doing homework he had brought from the hospital, some concentration and focusing exercises. At one point I thought, Thank you God, as I have said SO many times in the last few weeks. A big sense of gratefulness comes over one at times. I am grateful he is here with us and grateful he is performing regular activities. And I know things will only get better! :)

Este es el ofrecimiento de hoy. Quería usar los mismos "personajes" de ayer ya que no había estado contenta con un diseño en particular y quería explorarlos un poco mas. Está bien pero no me encanta. El nombre de hoy vino de un momento esta noche. Estaba sentada acá y mientras hacía este  zentangle my hijo estaba al lado mío haciendo sus deberes que trajo del hospital, ejercicios para concentración y focalización. En un momento pensé: Gracias Dios!, como he dicho TANTAS veces estas semanas pasadas. Un gran sentimiento de agradecimiento me viene a menudo. Agradecida no solo de que esté con nosotros y agradecida de que pueda realizar actividades normales. Y se que las cosas se van a poner cada día mejor!  :)

This is what  I produced today. The name comes from thinking how precious life and health are, how we take so much for granted and many times we realize how much we were able to do when we no longer can.  One of the new patterns today made me think of a jewel hence the precious thought. Wish I had done a couple of things differently but the main purpose of these designs is to just do them and loose myself more than having a wonderful product. Hope you all enjoyed your weekend.

Esto es lo que produje hoy. El nombre viene de pensar en lo preciosa que son la vida y la salud, como damos mucho por sentado y muchas veces nos damos cuenta de lo que podiamos hacer cuando ya no podemos hacerlo. Uno de los diseños de hoy me hizo pensar en una joya y eso me hizo pensar en lo "precioso". Ojala hubiera echo un par de cosas diferente pero la razón pricipal de estas creaciones es el echo de hacerlo y perderme mas que tener un producto terminado. Espero que todos hayan tenido buen fin de semana.

Didn't get to do one yesterday, did this one today and I tried something different. I had thrown some colour on the paper yesterday, just a wash of colours. So today I drew overtop of that. It's ok, I missed the sharpness of the white paper around it. I may grab white acrylic and do a white border around it.

Good progress for my son. He is walking with elbow crutches, is able to walk without them and we have a tentative release day from the hospital of Feb 5! We have started however to come home for dinner and overnight stay, and we spend the whole day from 9 till 3ish at the hospital in all sorts of therapy sessions. Just trying is new routine and see if it works. So far so good.

Ayer no pude hacer nada, hice este hoy y probé algo differente. Había puesto un poco de color en este paper ayer, simplemente una mezcla de colores. Así que hoy dibujé arriba de ese color. Está bueno pero extrañé el brillo blanco del papel alrededor del dibujo. Tal vez le agrege una banda de acrílico blanco alrededor. 

Buen progreso con mi hijo.Esta caminando con bastones (y puede caminar sin ellos). Tenemos una fecha tentativa para el alta del hospital del 5 de Febrero! Hemos empezado a venir a casa todas las noches, cenamos y dormimos en casa y estamos de nuevo en el hospital desde las 9 hasta las 3 para todas las terapias distintas que él tiene. Estamos probando esta nueva rutina para ver como funciona. Hasta ahora bien.

This is today's offering. I haven't decided if I will be adding colour to this one or not, probably will. Really enjoyed learning the "leafy" pattern, it appealed to my love of plants and organic shapes. Thank you so much for the messages and emails I have received supporting us. Este es el ofrecimiento de hoy. No he decidido todavía si voy a agregarle color o no, probablemente si. Realmente disfruté aprender este diseño como de hojas, me atrajo seguro por mi amor a las plantas y formas orgánicas. Gracias a todos por los mensajes y emails que recibí desde el post de ayer. El apoyo ha sido extraordinario desde el comienzo, gracias!

#26 of 30: Maiden Voyage (in progress)

Well.... I thought I could do a quickish rendition of this and I am heading in a good direction but I think I need to call it a day as I am starting to get sloppy. The reason for this today is that it is my husband's birthday and one of his greatest passions in life is sailing. So I thought I would try and do a study for a larger painting for him. Last year we bought a new boat and this is a shot of us bringing the boat from Vancouver to Victoria. We are just heading out in this photo with the north Shore Mountains behind us. The sky got really dark at one point and the water turned a beautiful green/blue colour (but there was no storm :)  I spent a lot of time on the drawing today, making sure I got the right perspective and proportions of everything and I would say it reads pretty well. BUT if I start just putting lines  and changing the shapes too much, the whole thing will fall apart. So I am far enough into it to post it as is and I will keep on working on it this week. I'll post the finished one when it is done!  Happy Birthday Sweetie! Love You!

Creí que iba a a poder hacer una rendición más o menos rápida hoy y me parece que voy bien encaminada pero estoy cansada y estoy a empezando a ponerme desprolija así que me parece mejor parar por el día. La razón de este cuadro hoy es que es el cumpleaños de mi esposo y una de sus grandes pasiones es la navegación. Por eso quise probar de hacer este estudio para un cuadro más grande para él. El año pasado compramos un velero nuevo y esta es una foto sacada cuando lo estábamos trayendo desde Vancouver a Victoria. Acabábamos de salir de Vancouver y esas son las montañas de la costa Norte que vamos dejando atrás. El cielo se puso oscuro en un momento y tornó el agua de un color verde azulado espectacular. Le dediqué mucho tiempo al dibujo hoy para asegurame de tener las proporciones y perspectiva correctas y me parece que está bastante bien pero si empiezo a poner líneas donde no hay o ha cambiar las formas se me va arruinar. Estoy lo suficientemente avanzada como para colgarlo y voy a seguirlo esta semana. Lo voy a publicar de nuevo acá una vez terminado. Feliz Cumple John! Te quiero mucho!
