Another one that has grown big, painted from the field sketch I had done in Yellowknife; I really enjoyed painting it larger. Not much more to say about it.... I am packing and getting ready to go to Mexico for a week. For the first time in a long time, I am not taking my oil paints with me, just my sketching and watercolours, I'm really looking forward to some sunshine and playing with a different medium.
I don't think I'll be able to post while gone but I am leaving a couple of posts scheduled ahead of time to share with you!

Otra escena que ha crecido en tamaño, pinté este cuadro del bosquejo que había echo en Yellowknife, no hay mucho mas que decir sobre esta pintura, sólo que lo disfruté mucho. Me estoy preparado para una semana en Mexico, por primera vez en mucho tiempo no llevo óleos en un viaje, llevo solamente cosas para dibujar y hacer acuarelas.  Estoy esperando con ansias el sol y el jugar con un medio diferente.  No creo que pueda escribir en el blog mientras esté de viaje, así que dejo un par listos para la semana que viene. Que pasen una buena semana!

I expect you have gathered from previous posts how much I enjoyed the trip to Yellowknife and Arctic Haven. I ended up producing 20 pieces en plein air (out in the open air) and lots of them have become a great source of inspiration to develop a larger body of work. I have already started to paint bigger versions of my favourite field sketches from the trip. As always, painting them allows me to be right back in that moment and relive that wonderful trip. This first one greatly showcases all the fall colours we enjoyed in Yellowknife, which I just loved. I delivered it to Calla Design last week please, stop by and take a look and maybe take it home! :)

Me imagino que ya se han dado cuenta con todo lo que les he mostrado cuanto disfrute el viaje a Yellowknife y Artic Haven. Terminé pintando 20 cuadros al aire libre y muchos de ellos se están convirtiendo en gran inspiración para producir una serie basada en ese viaje. Ya he comenzado a pintar mis bosquejos favoritos en una escala mucho más grande. Como siempre, mientras los pinto vuelvo a estar en ese momento y vuelvo a vivir esas experiencias maravillosas. Este primero muestra los colores del otoño en Yellowknife, lo llevé a Calla Design esta semana pasada, pasen a verlo y si quieren se lo pueden llevar a casa! :)

30 in 30 September 2017: Done!!!

Wow, I did it! It always amazes me at the end when I see all the work together.... This time I didn't set out to do all landscapes but it went that way with the explorations into different landscapes formats and compositions I did at the beginning of the month and then with the trip to Yellowknife and Arctic Haven. I did finish well over 30 paintings this past 30 days but unfortunately because of traveling and wifi/internet availability  or lac there of, I wasn't always able to post in a timely fashion.... All in all, I leanrt a lot again and I have the beginnings of a couple of different series I am very excited about: BC landscapes in large scale and Fall Scenes at the moment, inspired by the visit up  North. It's interesting that Fall hasn't really started here yet and I am all warmed up and ready to go!
Thank you immensely for all your support this  past month (and always)  here, or on Facebook, Instagram and private messages. It means a lot!

Wow, lo logré! Siempre me maravilla al final cuando veo  todo el trabajo junto.... Esta vez, no tuve la intención de hacer sólo paisajes pero fue así como se desarrolló con las exploraciones de paisajes en distintas composiciones y formatos que hice al cominezo del mes y con el viaje a Yellowknife y Arctic Haven. Completé (o comencé con detalles por terminar) mucho mas de 30 cuadros este mes pero debido a días de viaje o falta de internet no pude publicarlos  cuado debía.... Como conclusión, aprendí mucho de nuevo y tengo los comienzos de un par de series nuevas: Paisajes de Bristish Columbia en gran escala y Escenas de Otoño. Es interesante que este año puedo disfrutar del otoño mas timepo ya que empecé hace unas semanas en el norte y todavía no ha llegado a Victoria pero ya he echo el pre-calentamiento y  estoy lista para seguir!
Gracias de corazón por todo el apoyo este mes y siempre  acá, en Facebook, Instagram  o por mensajes privados. Significan mucho para mi!

This last day in Yellowknife was interesting... Deb and I wanted to paint as it was the farewell and we wanted to reach our target goal of number of paintings done but we were tired and we ended up driving around forever looking for a good spot. It was very cloudy so the light was quite flat, that + the tiredness made it difficult to find a place we liked.... Finally at about 2 pm after dilly-dallying the whole day, we started! We came back to this one spot very close to City Hall. There's a trail around the whole lake, Frame Lake that is, and we picked this one view from the probably hundreds of beautiful views available. It was great to see the smiling faces of people walking by, they broke into big smiles saying things like "Cool", or "Wow, you are painting!". I think lots of the neighbours walking their dogs were surprised at finding us standing in the bush painting by the trail. :)

Éste último día en Yellowknife fue muy interesante.... Deborah y yo queríamos pintar ya que era la despedida y queríamos también alcanzar nuestra meta de números de cuadros pintados pero estábamos cansadas y terminamos dando vueltas por toda la ciudad tratando de encontrar un lugar que nos gustara. Estaba muy nublado ese día así que no había mucha luz para pintar, eso más lo cansadas que estábamos hizo difícil encontrar el lugar adecuado… Finalmente alrededor de las 2:00 de la tarde después de dar vueltas todo el día, comenzamos! Volvimos a un lugar muy cerca de la municipalidad. Hay un sendero alrededor de todo el lago, el Lago Frame, y elegimos esta vista en particular de las posibles cientos de vistas hermosas que debe haber. Fue muy divertido ver las caras sonrientes de la gente que pasaba caminando, apenas nos veían, decían con una sonrisa "Qué Bueno" o "Wow, están pintando! Creo que los vecinos que habían sacado a los perros a caminar estaban sorprendidos de encontrarnos paradas al costado del sendero pintando!!

Once back in Yellowknife, Deborah and I had 2 full days of painting left so we made good use of them and set out to find a good spot. We ended up by the airport  and found Fred Henne Park with beautiful yellow trees sitting on pink/orangey rocks which are part of the Canadian Shield.
It was so interesting to see how the colours on the trees had changed in just 6 days we had been gone from there! Fall had certainly arrived in the NWT!  I  still have to play with this set of paintings but I am very pleased with what I did as I learnt a lot about editing. Originally I had a whole bunch more trees on the left side I had included in the larger piece, then at the last minute I decided to take them out and it made the whole painting so much stronger! So many times less is more.... have to remember that!

Una vez de vuelta en Yellowknife, Deborah  y yo tuvimos 2 mas días completos de pintura y los aprovechamos bien! Terminamos encontrando un lugar que nos gustó cerca del aeropueto en el Parque Fred Henne con muchos árboles muy amarillos sobre piedras naranjas y rosadas que forman parte de la Plataforma Canadiense. Fue tan interesante ver el cambio de color de los árboles en sólo  6 días, el otoño si que había llegado a los Territorios del NorOeste!! Todavía tengo que jugar con estos dos cuadros pero estoy muy contenta con ellos ya que aprendí mucho sobre "editar" lo que tengo adelante. Originalmente había incluído mas árboles en la parte izquierda del cuadro mas grande. A último momento decidí sacarlos y cambió completamente! Mucho mejor, a veces menos es más!

This was  the third and last painting of the day at the end of Old Town in Yellowknife, NWT. The minute I walked out to the point I had seen these trees and all the movement they had  but I didn't really want to paint just "the trees". But then as I finished the second painting and seeing we still had some time I found the right spot and finally did it. I was interested in capturing the movement I saw  and the way they just dominated the corner. I am pretty pleased with it even when I know I have to touch up lots of things. Unfortunately it didn't travel well on our second leg  to Arctic Haven and it got a few marks I'll have to repaint. It was a wonderful day of painting for sure!
Note: Last Friday morning my beloved Ipad stopped working. Since getting home from the Arctic trip I have spent 7+ hours fixing it, on the phone with Apple and Microsoft (awesome service from both!). Finally, Sunday morning I got it solved and I have everyhting working again, nothing lost too thanks to having everything on the cloud. 
I am behind sharing the paintings but I have already painted all 30 and then some!

Este fue el tercer y último cuadro del día en Old Town in Yellowknife, NWT. Apenas entré a esta zona ví estos árboles  y todo el movimiento que tenían pero no quería pintarlos tan de cerca. Finalmente, una vez que había terminado los otros dos cuadros y como me sobraba tiempo, busqué el ángulo que me gustaba mas y comencé. Me interesaba mas que nada capturar el movimiento que tenían y cómo dominaban ese rincón del lago. Estoy bastante contenta con el resultado a pesar de tener que cambiar y retocar algunas cosas. Desafortunadamente, la pintura se dañó un poco al transportar el panel a Arctic Haven que fue la próxima etapa de nuestra aventura. Se marcó en algunos lugares y voy a atener que pintar nuevamente. La pasamos muy bien ese dia!
Nota: El viernes pasado mi  amado Ipad dejó de funcionar. Desde que llegué a casa del Artico, me pasé mas de 7 horas tratando de arreglarlo, con ayuda por teléfono de Apple y Microsoft ( servicio  buenisimos de los dos!). Finalmente el domingo a la mañana logré solucionarlo y por suerte tengo todo funcionando bien y no he perdido nada, gracias a que tenía todo en la nube.
Se que estoy muy retrasada con el blog pero ya he terminado de pintar los 30 cuadros!

This was the second painting of the day in Old Town in Yellowknife,. For this one, my self-imposed assignment was to stay with the big brush. I had been working with brushes that were too small for my liking and everything was getting fiddly for me.  It was all about capturing the rhythm and colours of the rock formations. I stopped as soon as didn't know what else to do to it and I am glad I did. I am somewhat pleased with it, will re-evaluate once back in the studio  :) A dog stopped to visit and pushed the painting on the ground. That's the spots you can see on the sky, dirt..... I was lucky it didn't get totally ruined,  I'll just  wipe it off once the painting is completely dry and touch up if necessary. The joys of plein air.....you never know what you will encounter!

Este es el segundo cuadro del día en Pueblo Viejo en Yellowknife.  Me impuse la obligación de usar un pincel grande para  la mayoría del cuadro ya que había estado usando pinceles demasiados chiquitos y estaba entrando en demasiados detalles muy pronto para mi gusto. La meta era capturar el ritmo y los colores de la roca. Paré una vez que no sabía que mas hacer y me alegro de haber echo eso. Estoy bastante conforme con el resultado.... re-evaluaremos  una vez de regreso. :) Un perro pasó a visitar y me empujó el cuadro que estaba apoyado sobre una piedra, por eso se ven manchas en el cielo que es tierra, una vez que este bien seco voy a sacárselo y retocar si hace falta. Tuve suerte de que no se arruinara por completo.... el placer de la pintura al aire libre  .... uno nunca sabe lo que se va a encontrar!

On the Edge: 15 of 30

I am back from the land of caribou and no wifi for 6 days so I am very behind with the posting but very ahead with the painting as we painted up a storm! I'll continue sharing the trip day by day because there's so many great photos to show you. Warning: Posts may be long, I just want to share the experiences of this trip.
For our second day in Yellowknife, we chose to explore Old Town. We first drove around a bit to take photos and find what we wanted to paint. We found some very interesting views and at one point as we had stopped to take a photo of a teepee in somebody's front yard a lady holding a big basket approached us to ask if we needed anything. We explained we were just taking a photo..... next thing you know, she turned around and offered if we wanted to try some "bannock", fried dough, she explained as she looked at our questioning faces. She had made a batch and was taking some to the teachers at the school. We, of course, accepted and oh my, it was so delicious! Later on, I had to google about it. It's a traditional dish of the indigenous people of the North West Territories. We are finding people to be so friendly here!

 

We ended up painting at the very end of the point past Old Town. We followed an unmarked trail which didn't have any "no trespassing" signs so we set up for the day after knocking on some doors trying to make sure it was ok for us to be there but there was nobody home. It's typically a good idea when setting up outdoors to make sure we are not where we are not supposed to be...
With this first painting of the day I did a very loose underpainting and I was every excited with all the colours I had laid down. I didn't want to loose that excitement so I left lots of it showing and concentrated on trying to get the colours of the rock right. Depending on how the light is hitting it they can have a very green tone, a very orangey tone or purple. As with all of them it will be reevaluated once I am back home.

Acabo de regresar de la tierra de caribou y no Wi-Fi o internet durante seis días así es que estoy muy atrasada con mostrarle los cuadros pero muy adelantada con los cuadros ya que pintamos un montón! Voy a seguir mostrándoles día por día a día porque hay tantas tantas cosas para compartir.

En nuestro segundo día en yellowknife, fuimos a explorar el "Pueblo Viejo".  Primero dimos bastantes vueltas sacando fotos y encontramos el lugar donde queríamos pintar. Encontramos unas vistas muy interesantes y en un momento que habíamos parado a sacar una foto de una carpa en un jardín de una casa, una mujer con una canasta se nos acercó para preguntar si necesitabamos algo. Le explicamos que simplemente estábamos tomando una foto, que no éramos de acá… Ella siguió caminando y unos minutos después ella se dió vuelta y nos ofreció "Bannock", nos explicó que era masa frita, cuando se dió cuenta que no sabíamos que era. Ella los había hecho para llevarles a las maestras en la escuela. Aceptamos con gusto y Oh! Deliciosos!! Cuando volví al hotel tuv que buscar que era.....es una plato tradicional de indígenas de Norteamérica. Estamos descubriendo que la gente es muy muy amable en esta parte del mundo.

Terminamos pintando en una península pasando el Pueblo Viejo. Encontramos un sendero que no tenía carteles de No Pasar así que no asentamos a pintar por el día después de golpear en algunas puertas para asegurarnos de que podíamos estar ahí pero no había nadie en casa. Normalmente es buena idea cuando una pinta fuera asegurarse de que nunca estamos en lugares en los que no debemos estar....Con este primer cuadro del día hice una base muy colorida y estaba muy satisfecha con los colores que había puesto. No quería perder eso por lo que dejé que muchos se vieran en la versión final y me concentré en los colores de la roca. Depende de cómo la luz le da, puede tener tonos muy verde, muy naranja, azulados o violeta. Como con todos los cuadros de este viaje, voy a re-evaluar una vez que esté devuelta en casa.

The second painting in Yellowknife, same place as yesterday's.... It had started to rain too much so we moved under the wooden structure which was a godsend :)
While we were painting lots of people stopped to chat, including 2 First Nations gentlemen and it a delight to talk with them. They were carvers so we talked about making art, the city, first nations delicacies, cooking caribou and potatoes on the manifold of the running car nad restaurant suggestions....  You just meet the neatest people while painting! Thank you Richard and Ron for sharing your  stories.

El segundo cuadro en Yellowknife, en el mismo lugar de ayer.... Había empezado a llover demasiado por lo que nos habíamos mudado debajo de la estructura de madera que fue buenísimo tener cerca :)
Mientras estábamos pintando, mucha gente paró a charlar con nosotros, incluyendo dos señores indígenas que eran escultores. Charlamos de todo un poco, desde la creación de arte, la cuidad, platos indígenas, cocinar caribú y papas dentro del motor del auto y sugerencias  de cuales eran buenos restaurantes para visitar..... Uno conoce gente muy interesante cuando se pinta afuera! Gracias Richard y Ron por compartir sus historias.

I had so much fun doing this painting. I LOVE those Fall colours and I just went  for it. This is the first painting done in Yellowknife.... which is at 62 degrees Latitude, hence the name.... Beautiful area and landscape.  Fall is here for sure, the colours are changing and it's starting to get chilly (even for the locals!!) Painted right in town behind the Legislature Building on Frame Lake. I have to look at this one again once back home. There are lots of things I like about it  :)

Me divertí tanto pintando este cuadro! Me ENCANTAN esos colores de otoño y me largué con ganas a ponerlos en el lienzo. Este es el primer cuadro en Yellowknife.... que está a los 62 grados de Latitud, por eso el nombre del cuadro..... Una zona muy linda con paisajes hermosos! El otoño ya ha  llegado, los colores están cambiando y ya está empezando a hacer mas frio (alrededor de 12 grados).... hasta la gente de acá dice que ya está mas fresco. Pinté este cuadro en la ciudad, detrás del edificio de la legislatura en el Lago Frame. Tengo que re-evaluarlo una vez que llegue de vuelta a casa por supuesto pero sí tiene muchas cosas que me gusta.

This one is the bigger version of day 2. I loved that one and I struggled  a bit with this one... I ended up stopping as my heart wasn't in it at the time and that makes a big difference, I was starting to just mess up  parts I really liked.  I'll get back to it eventually..... Going in and around little islets is what we do to find secluded and protected coves to spend the night when cruising around the BC coast.
I am heading to the Arctic today!!!!! Flying into Yellowknife late at night, will keep you as posted as I can! I'm so excited!

Esta es la versión grande del día 2. Me encantó el resultado de aquel día pero este no tanto, La verdad es que me costó mucho.... terminé parando ya que no tenía ganas de seguir y estaba empezando a arruinar lo que ya había echo.... retornaré mas adelante.  Cuando navegamos, buscamos bahías y ensenadas tranquilas y protegidas para pasar la noche, como las que hay detrás de estos islotes.
Hoy me voy al Artico!!!! Llegamos en avión  a Yellowknife muy tarde, los voy a mantener al tanto a medida que pueda! Estoy tan entusiasmada!!

Well.... I imagine that by now you should know the drill..... this one came from Day 6, just a different cropping and addition of the left land mass..... Really enjoying these deep exploration of skies, landscapes and just shapes in general. Went back and forth with the water, making it darker and lighter at times, will have to wait for re-evaluation at the end of the 30 days.

I am  getting ready and organized to leave on another painting adventure this coming Saturday. I mentioned it briefly  a few posts ago: I am going to the Arctic just to paint. How awesome is that?? I am going with my good fiend Deborah Czernecky and we will meet 10 painters from Ontario up at the lodge. We will spend a few days in Yellowknife before heading up to Arctic Haven in Nunavut. If you are familiar with Yellowknife, are there any spots/things to do that are a must??? I appreciate any suggestions! I  will be painting lots and I am hoping to still post daily but I am not sure I'll be able to. Gotta go, lots to do!!!! Thanks for visiting :)

Me imagino que a esta altura ya saben como estoy haciendo todo… Este cuadro surgió del del día 6, es simplemente un recorte del anterior y le agregué el pedazo de tierra en la izquierda… Realmente estoy disfrutando mucho de estas grandes exploraciones de cielos y paisajes. Di varias vueltas con el agua en este cuadro, oscureciéndola y aclarándola, voy a tener que esperar para re-evaluar al final de los 30 días ya que no me pude decidir y se me acabó el tiempo. :)

Me estoy preparando y organizando para irme este sábado a disfrutar de otra gran aventura. Lo mencioné de pasada hace unos cuantos días, esta vez me voy al medio de la nada en el ártico a pintar. Qué les parece??? Me voy con mi amiga Deborah Czernecky y nos juntamos allá con  otros 10 artistas de Ontario. Vamos a pasar un par de días en Yellowknife antes de ir a Arctiv Haven en Nanuvut. Si ustedes conocen Yellowknife, tienen alguna sugerencia de lugares o cosas que tenemos que ver/hacer si o si? Apreciaría cualquier idea. Voy a pintar mucho y espero poder publicarlos a diario pero no estoy segura si lo voy a poder hacer. Me tengo que ir, tengo muchas cosas que hacer! Gracias por visitarme!
