The Path is a painting I started a couple of years ago and it looked completely different  when I first started. Unfortunately I didn't have the time (or sense of direction I guess) to finish it right then and there and it stayed in the studio turned against the wall for a long time. Then I decided to get it done and the path became so overgrown I could no longer see it. I loved working with colour in this painting! It was very hard at first to let go of parts that I was enjoying in the previous incarnation but I got brave and allowed to painting to take its own course! Below you can see the start of it, it went through many lives and makeovers  before getting to the finished piece you see above. Thank you Janice at Calla Design for finding a home for this painting :)

"El Sendero" es un cuadro que empecé hace un par de años y al comienzo era completamente diferente. Desafortunadamente no tuve tiempo o tal vez no sabía muy bien en qué dirección ir para terminarlo en su momento por lo que permaneció en el taller contra la pared durante mucho tiempo. Cuando finalmente decidí terminarlo, las plantas comenzaron a crecer tanto que taparon el sendero inicial! 🙂  Me encantó trabajar con color en este cuadro! Fue difícil al comienzo abandonar y cubrir partes que me estaban gustando en la primera versión pero junté coraje y dejé que el cuadro siguiera su propio camino! En la segunda imagen, pueden ver el comienzo, pasó por muchas vidas antes de llegar a la pieza terminada que ven arriba. Gracias Janice de Calla Design por haber encontrado un hogar para este cuadro.

Last Fall I did this painting of the gorgeous succulents urn outside Calla Design , a design store on Estevan Village that represents my work. It was done Plein air and I really enjoyed both the process and the finished product. It sent me on a quest for more succulents to paint! Now, I am eagerly watching them grow and plan to do a few more paintings with these succulents!

Este otoño pasado hice este cuadro de las hermosas plantas en la urna que está afuera de Calla Design, un negocio de diseno que representa representa mi arte en Estevan Village. Lo pinté al aire libre y realmente disfruté tanto del proceso como del trabajo terminado. Me dio ganas de buscar más plantas para pintar! Ahora las veo crecer  con entusiasmo y tengo planes de pintar  mas cuadros con ellas !

Another one that has grown big, painted from the field sketch I had done in Yellowknife; I really enjoyed painting it larger. Not much more to say about it.... I am packing and getting ready to go to Mexico for a week. For the first time in a long time, I am not taking my oil paints with me, just my sketching and watercolours, I'm really looking forward to some sunshine and playing with a different medium.
I don't think I'll be able to post while gone but I am leaving a couple of posts scheduled ahead of time to share with you!

Otra escena que ha crecido en tamaño, pinté este cuadro del bosquejo que había echo en Yellowknife, no hay mucho mas que decir sobre esta pintura, sólo que lo disfruté mucho. Me estoy preparado para una semana en Mexico, por primera vez en mucho tiempo no llevo óleos en un viaje, llevo solamente cosas para dibujar y hacer acuarelas.  Estoy esperando con ansias el sol y el jugar con un medio diferente.  No creo que pueda escribir en el blog mientras esté de viaje, así que dejo un par listos para la semana que viene. Que pasen una buena semana!

I expect you have gathered from previous posts how much I enjoyed the trip to Yellowknife and Arctic Haven. I ended up producing 20 pieces en plein air (out in the open air) and lots of them have become a great source of inspiration to develop a larger body of work. I have already started to paint bigger versions of my favourite field sketches from the trip. As always, painting them allows me to be right back in that moment and relive that wonderful trip. This first one greatly showcases all the fall colours we enjoyed in Yellowknife, which I just loved. I delivered it to Calla Design last week please, stop by and take a look and maybe take it home! :)

Me imagino que ya se han dado cuenta con todo lo que les he mostrado cuanto disfrute el viaje a Yellowknife y Artic Haven. Terminé pintando 20 cuadros al aire libre y muchos de ellos se están convirtiendo en gran inspiración para producir una serie basada en ese viaje. Ya he comenzado a pintar mis bosquejos favoritos en una escala mucho más grande. Como siempre, mientras los pinto vuelvo a estar en ese momento y vuelvo a vivir esas experiencias maravillosas. Este primero muestra los colores del otoño en Yellowknife, lo llevé a Calla Design esta semana pasada, pasen a verlo y si quieren se lo pueden llevar a casa! :)

This is a painting I did a while back from flowers I just gathered from my yard. Love spring and flowers. I love seeing what is coming back every year and how things I planted last year gain strength the second season as they mature. Maybe I am inclined to post this today thinking of flowers and warmth as this doesn't feel like June at all but more like Mid March! Hopefully Summer starts this week :)

Este es un cuadro que hice hace un tiempo con flores que había cortado de mi jardín. Me encanta la primavera y las flores, me encanta ver cómo vuelven las cosas de la temporada pasada y ver como maduran las plantas de un año al otro. At the end of September I painted a couple of small florals from life at the end of the 30 Paintings in 30 Days Challenge. I loved painting them and as always I learn so much through the process of painting from life and not photos that  I have continued with the same format a few more times. These beautiful rusty hydrangeas were brought to Coast Collective by Evol, a sweet wonderful artist who ALWAYS brings flowers to have on display. Last time I was there for a demo, I knew she would have taken flowers as she always does, so I didn't even bother bringing anything else to paint. Very happy with how they turned out! Thank you Evol!!!

A fines de septiembre pinté unos cuantos cuadros de flores como parte del final del desafío de 30 cuadros en 30 días. Me encanta pintarlos y como siempre aprendo tanto del  proceso de pintar de cosas reales, no de fotos, he continuado con ese mismo formato varias veces. Estas hermosas hortensias  estaban en Coast Collective. Evol, que es una artista maravillosa,  SIEMPRE trae flores para tener en el mostrador. La última vez que estuve ahí para hacer una demostración, yo sabía que ella iba a tener flores ahí, asi es que ni me molesté en traer algo diferente para pintar. Estoy muy contenta con cómo salieron! Gracias Evol!!

#13 of 30: Field of Dreams

Well that was FUN! Gosh, I love painting flowers and I have been dying to do it!  I have had these flower fields to finish for quite some time and I have been procrastinating to get to them..... I have gone back into them a couple of times but it wasn't happening so today I started with one and went back to jumping back and forth between paintings. I ended up  working on 3 at the same time; interestingly enough, one is oils and the other 2 are acrylics so it took some thinking as to how I was applying paint. I haven't painted in acrylics for a while and I was reminded of how nice it to work with them too. I have taken this painting today as far as I want to, I may go back tomorrow and change a couple of minor things but for now it needs to sit tight and rest.
The story behind this one is that I had help.... I started it as a demo at Sooke Fine Arts and this little girl came to my table, she was so excited with all the art and what she had created as it was kids' day at the show;  we chatted for a minute and then I asked if she wanted to paint with me and her face lit up! So I explained to her that we don't put the same colour all over, we talked about mixing greens and then she painted on my canvas. She was very pleased with herself and so was I. Thank you for helping me!

Cómo disfruté de pintar esto! Hace rato que tengo estos cuadros con campos de flores por terminar y he estado procrastinando para hacerlo… Traté de terminarlos varias veces y no pasó nada así que hoy decidí trabajar en uno y empecé a saltar de uno al otro; terminé trabajando en los tres cuadros al mismo tiempo, lo interesante es que uno es en óleo y los otros dos son acrílicos así que tuve que pensar bien como aplicaba la pintura. Hace mucho que no pinto en acrílicos y la verdad es que me sirvió para recordar cuánto me gustan también.
La historia de de este cuadro es que tuve ayuda… Lo comencé con una demostración en Muestra de Bellas Arte de Sooke en Julio.  Hubo una nenita que vino a mi mesa, ella estaba tan contenta con todo el arte y con lo que había ella creado (era el día para chicos en la muestra), charlamos un rato y le pregunté si ella quería pintar conmigo. Se le iluminó la carita y le expliqué que no ponemos el mismo color sobre todo el cuadro, hablamos de cómo mezclar verde y después ella empezó a pintar sobre mi lienzo. Estaba tan contenta! Y yo también :)
Hoy he llevado este cuadro hasta acá, tal vez vuelva mañana y cambie un par de cosas pero por ahora necesita descansar. Aprovecho esta oportunidad para mostrarles un par de fotos de ese día cuando empecé este cuadro. Pueden verme a mí y "El Jardín Secreto "en la muestra. Ese cuadro ahora está disponible en Calla Design  en la Villa Estevan en Oak Bay. Estoy muy contenta de tener trabajo en este hermoso negocio.
