I'm excited to be part of the 2018 Winter Small Works Show at the Massey
Gallery at the At Gallery of Greater Victoria. I have 3 pieces in it,
one of the was Sitting in The Morning Sun which I shared with you a few weeks ago. I
attended the Opening Reception and it was great to see so many people
there. I think it's always interesting to see how different styles can
hang next to each other so well. Mine are the rectangular seascapes
which were painted on the boat last summer during our adventures in the
Broughtons. Show is on until Jan 31. There are so many treasures for you
to enjoy (and take home if you want ;) Make sure you stop by!!

Estoy contenta de participar en la Muestra de Obras Pequeñas de la
Galeria de Arte de Victoria. Tengo 3 cuadros incluídos en la exhibición y
uno de ellos es "Sentados en el Sol de Mañana" que les mostré hace unas
semanas. Fui a la recepción de apertura y fue buenísimo ver tanta gente
ese día. Siempre me parece tan interesante ver cómo trabajos de
distintos estilos se complementan en exhibiciones. Los míos son los 3
paisajes de mar que pinté este verano pasado en el velero durante
nuestras aventuras por la Broughtons. La muestra corre hasta el 31 de
Enero, pasen a verla! Hay muchos tesoros para que disfruten y para que
tal vez se lleven a casa. ;)

"Sitting in the Morning Sun" was painted
this summer during our sailing trip in August. As you may remember, my
husband and I spend a month on our sailboat cruising around the
Broughtons and Desolation Sound. Many nights, we would drop anchor in
quiet bays without any other boats in sight. These coves are usually
small and protected with beautiful sights to paint. Many times, the
views would be quite closed in, and in the end, I ended up focusing
on small, intimate views of several points or islets which didn't
include any part of the sky which was different form the landscapes I
usually paint. Can you guess what we were listening to as I painted???

Pinté "Sentados al Sol de la Mañana" este verano durante
nuestro viaje en el velero en agosto. Como pueden recordar tal vez, mi
esposo y yo pasamos un mes navegando por las Broughtons y Desolation
Sound. Muchas noches tirábamos el ancla en bahías muy tranquilas en las
que no había ningún otro velero. Éstas bahías son normalmente muy
pequeñas y protegidas con vistas hermosas para pintar. Muchas veces
estas vistas eran bastante cerradas y al final terminé enfocándome en
vistas muy íntimas de islotes sin incluir nada de cielo. Pueden
adivinar qué canción estaba escuchando mientras pintaba? Me encanta esa
canción!

"Watching The World Go By” came from a small plein air painting I
did about a year ago during a long weekend out on the boat in Portland
Island. This is a marine park close to Vancouver Island which is one of
our favourite places to go for a short day trip. We just love it there,
we have spent many many hours on that island and on its shores. We have
take countless of guests from all over and shared its beauty. We
actually have “our own beach” 😂 on the
island, that’s how we refer to Arbutus Point in our family, sometimes
even frown when we get there we see other people!! Ha ha! All ferries
between Sidney and Vancouver and other Gulf Islands always go around it
which is why you can just sit and ‘Watch the world Go By’. So glad
that both, the plein air and the studio piece, sold at the ‘Oh The
Places We’ve Been’ show. This new collector wanted to keep them together
so bought both! Thank you Sabrina and Josh, hope you enjoy them for a
long time!

"Mirando Al Mundo Pasar” (60×60cm, óleo sobre lienzo) se originó de un
bosquejo que hice hace un año más o menos durante un fin de semana largo
en el velero. Es de la Isla Portland que es un parque marino cerca de
la Isla de Vancouver que es uno de nuestros lugares favoritos para ir
cuando hacemos un viaje de un día. Nos encanta ese lugar, hemos pasado
muchas muchas horas en sus playas y en sus aguas. Hemos llevado a
muchísimos invitados de distintos lugares con los que hemos compartido
su belleza. Tenemos “nuestra propia playa” 😂
en esa isla, así es como nos referimos a Arbutus Point dentro de nuestra
familia. Todos los ferries entre Victoria y Vancouver y otras Islas del
Golfo pasan siempre alrededor de esta isla por lo cual es muy fácil
sentarse y “mirar cómo pasa el mundo”. Estoy muy contenta de que los dos
cuadros se vendieron en la muestra de la semana pasada. Estos nuevos
coleccionistas querían mantenerlo juntos, gracias Sabrina y Josh, espero
que los disfruten durante muchos años!

"Spirit Meadows" was one of the properties where we painted up at Big
Bar Lake back in June. Floyd and Jeannie were very generous in letting
us paint from their back deck and Yes, this is the amazing view they get
to enjoy every single day!! Thank you for sharing your gorgeous spot!

There are endless paths and trails to explore all over the place here on the West Coast. Many times, when you get to the end of the path, you get to enjoy the most beautiful views on the ocean or vistas from mountain tops. I haven't been doing those walks as much lately and I miss them. I have to make sure I schedule them in in the near future and enjoy Spring!

Acá en esta zona de la Costa Oeste, hay una gran cantidad de caminitos y senderos para explorar. Muchas veces, al llegar al final de esos senderos, se pueden disfrutar paisajes de mar hermosos. Hace mucho que no hago estas caminatas y las extraño muho. Tengo que asegurarme de hacer tiempo para hacerlas pronto y disfrutar de la primavera!

When I first came to Canada, one day my husband took me to the beach.... when we got there, all I could see were rocks, logs and very few waves.... I went..... really? Is this the beach??? Where's the sand?? and the big waves?? .... That is what I had seen so far in Argentina, Chile and Brazil.... Well, I have come to love the beaches here with the huge piles of logs brought to shore by storms and tides. There are of course some that do have the big waves and some with sandy patches and long spits..... but most are littered with rocks and white-washed logs. I also remember from that first day the noise the waves make on a pebble beach.... quite different!

Cuando vine a Canada, un día mi esposo me llevó a la playa.... cuando llegamos, lo único que había era troncos, piedras y nada de olas.... y yo dije.... Es esta la playa? Donde está la arena? y las olas?? Era a eso que yo estaba acostumbrada en playas de Argentina, Chile y Brasil..... Pero después de un timepo, encantan las playas de acá con las pilas de troncos traídos por tormentas y mareas. Hay por supuesto algunas que tienen olas grandes y otras con largas playas de arena, pero la mayoría estan llenas de troncos y piedritas. También me acuerdo de ese primer día el ruido que hacen las olas cuando rompen sobre las piedras..... muy diferente!!

I had done this as a plein air study many many years ago; it sold but the image always stayed with me, so I dug up a photo of the sketch and did it again in juicy oils this time. This spot is a very protected cove in the Sechelt Peninsula where we once or twice we have spent the night on our way up to Desolation Sound. History says that possibly the cove got that name when more than a hundred years ago it was used by a man who used to smuggle Chinese people into the United States for a fee of 100 dollars, that must have been a lot of money back then!

Había pintado este cuadro desde el velero hace muchos muchos años que por suerte se había vendido pero siempre recuerdo esta imagen. Por eso decidí buscar una foto de ese antiguo bosquejo y decidí pintarlo en óleos esta vez. Este lugar en una ensenada muy protegida en la Peninsula de Sechelt donde una o dos veces hemos pasado la noche camino a Desolation Sound. La historia dice que posiblemente la ensenada recibió este nombre después de ser usada por un señor que se dedicaba a entrar a EEUU gente de China de contrabando por la suma de 100 dólares, eso debe haber sido mucha plata en a quel entonces!

We have a couple of kayaks on the boat and once we are set on anchor we often spend quite a few hours just exploring the bays and coves closeby. There is so much nature to enjoy and it is so so quiet and peaceful!

Tenemos un par de kayaks en el velero y una vez que ponemos el ancla muchas veces nos pasamos varias horas explorando la zona desde el kayak. Hay tanta naturaleza para disfrutar y hay tanta paz y tranquilidad!

I've been working on this larger one for the last few days and I need to let it sit for a while because I don't have the patience needed right now to actually finish it, I fear I'll just wreck what I like about it..... sometimes that's the best thing to do, put it aside for a while and come back to it with fresh eyes.

Hace varios días que estoy trabajando en este que es mas grande y necesito dejarlo a un lado unos días ya que no tengo la paciencia necesaria en este momento para terminarlo, si sigo ahora, voy a arruinar lo que me gusta.... a veces es lo mejor que podemos hacer, dejarlo unos días de lado y volver a verlo ya descansada.
When we go for several days or weeks at a time on the sailboat, we typically go from one anchorage to the next one, we may stay on the same spot for several days depending on how exploring there is to do in each place. From far away, it seems that there's not much to see but once you start getting closer to shore you discover there are all sorts of protected coves everywhere, like behind small islands that can only be found once you are closer to them. Of course it can all be seen on the charts, we have wonderful navigation systems now both on the boat as well as Ipads and phones but in the olden days.... that is just 10 years ago for us, haha, it was all with just paper charts which I loved!

Cuando vamos en el velero durante días o semanas normalmente vamos de un anclaje al otro, tal vez nos quedamos en el mismo lugar varios días dependiendo de todo lo que haya para explorar en ese lugar. Desde lejos, muchas veces parece que no hay mucho para ver y visitar pero una vez que nos acercamos a la costa descubrimos muchas ensenadas protegidas, detrás de islotes por ejemplo. Por supuesto que se pueden ver ver en los mapas, tenemos ahora sistemas de navegación maravillosos en el velero como así también en nuestros iPad y teléfonos pero en los viejos días… hace sólo unos unos 10 años para nosotros, era todo con cartas de navegación de papel que me encantaban!
I am having so much fun revisiting some of the places we have been in our different trips up to Desolation Sound or just here around the Gulf Islands. The variety of scenery we see from the boat is mind boggling and very inspiring! Some of these ones will make it to bigger canvas for sure!

Estoy diviertiendome tanto revisitando algunos de los lugares a los que vamos cuando navegamos en Desolation Sound o por acá en las Islas del Golfo. La gran variedad de paisajes que vemos desde el velero es increíble y gran fuente de inspiración! Algunos de estos estudios van a pasar a lienzos mas grandes seguro!
This is #4 of 30 and as you may know, I am experimenting with new ways of doing things these last few days and to be honest, because I am working following steps that are quite different from my usual ones, I feel I am most out of control while painting, not really knowing what I am doing!! But the thing is I am liking the results!!! I really love the thick texture and brushstrokes, always have!

Este es el 4 de 30 cuadros y como ya saben, hace varios días que estoy experimentando con nuevos modos de hacer las cosas y si soy honesta, siento que estoy totalmente fuera de control mientras pinto ya que estoy siguiendo pasos que son bastante distintos a lo que hago noemalmente, medio como que no se lo que estoy haciendo! Pero la cosa es que están gustando los resultados!! Me encantan esas texturas y pinceladas tan gruesas! Siempre me han gustado mucho!

Continuando con mis exploraciones en hacer las cosas de forma diferente, aquí tienen una escena local en la que me concentré especialmente en usar much mas pintura de la que uso normalmente. Eso es todo hoy, Feliz Domingo!
Another one that has grown big, painted from the field sketch I had done in Yellowknife; I really enjoyed painting it larger. Not much more to say about it.... I am packing and getting ready to go to Mexico for a week. For the first time in a long time, I am not taking my oil paints with me, just my sketching and watercolours, I'm really looking forward to some sunshine and playing with a different medium.
I don't think I'll be able to post while gone but I am leaving a couple of posts scheduled ahead of time to share with you!

Otra escena que ha crecido en tamaño, pinté este cuadro del bosquejo que había echo en Yellowknife, no hay mucho mas que decir sobre esta pintura, sólo que lo disfruté mucho. Me estoy preparado para una semana en Mexico, por primera vez en mucho tiempo no llevo óleos en un viaje, llevo solamente cosas para dibujar y hacer acuarelas. Estoy esperando con ansias el sol y el jugar con un medio diferente. No creo que pueda escribir en el blog mientras esté de viaje, así que dejo un par listos para la semana que viene. Que pasen una buena semana!
I expect you have gathered from previous posts how much I enjoyed the trip to Yellowknife and Arctic Haven. I ended up producing 20 pieces en plein air (out in the open air) and lots of them have become a great source of inspiration to develop a larger body of work. I have already started to paint bigger versions of my favourite field sketches from the trip. As always, painting them allows me to be right back in that moment and relive that wonderful trip. This first one greatly showcases all the fall colours we enjoyed in Yellowknife, which I just loved. I delivered it to Calla Design last week please, stop by and take a look and maybe take it home! :)

Me imagino que ya se han dado cuenta con todo lo que les he mostrado cuanto disfrute el viaje a Yellowknife y Artic Haven. Terminé pintando 20 cuadros al aire libre y muchos de ellos se están convirtiendo en gran inspiración para producir una serie basada en ese viaje. Ya he comenzado a pintar mis bosquejos favoritos en una escala mucho más grande. Como siempre, mientras los pinto vuelvo a estar en ese momento y vuelvo a vivir esas experiencias maravillosas. Este primero muestra los colores del otoño en Yellowknife, lo llevé a Calla Design esta semana pasada, pasen a verlo y si quieren se lo pueden llevar a casa! :)
This was the last piece I painted this last May in our trip to
Ashcroft.... Once on our way back home, we visited one of the
participants of the paint out who lived in Kamloops and we painted
just outside her place.... there were SO MANY paintings to be done right
then and there..... I ended up picking this view and the patterns and
textures were what really captivated me. I was so excited about them!
So I chose to just go in with a lot of gusto and colour and in the end I
am really happy with how it turnd out. The place was called Cinammon
Hills hence the name of the painting. :) Thank you Max for showing us
your little slice of heaven :)

fue el último cuadro que hice en el viaje de Mayo a Ashcroft. Ya de
regreso a casa, pasamos a visitar a una de las pintoras que había estado
en Ascroft que vive en Kamloops y ella nos llevó a pintar cerquita de
su casa.... Había TANTOS cuadros para pintar ahí mismo en un solo lugar!
Terminé eligiendo esta vista que estaba lleba de texturas y diseños que
me captivaron en el acto. Estaba tan encantada con ellos!! Decidí
empezar a pintar con mucho entusiasmo y colores y al final esty
contenta con los resultados. Gracias Max por mostrarnos un poquito de tu
mundo. :)
I had the privilege of being in a group of artists that went into Echo
Canyon in High Bar on the Fraser River last May. Our host Wayne Larsen from Big Bar
Lake drove us though mountains and gorgeous views to this spot that was
quite something. How do you put it all onto canvas?? How do you convey
the size and scale of what you have in front of you?? The vastness of the
terrain and the size of the canyon itself made it very difficult
to paint the whole thing so instead of trying to fit it all, which is
quite impossible by the way, I chose to zone into one particular area,
the one that had the most contrast and decided to turn the day into an
exercise. I was determined to study each shape with its colours and
values without being too concerned about the finished painting. Through
the whole painting I just kept saying to myself: "It' just shapes, it's
just shapes, what colour is it?". At the end of the day I wasn't too
impressed by my painting but really liked the strokes and how much I had
leanrt by just looking and recording. Now, when I look at the painting I
am actually pretty happy with it.

Este Mayo pasado tuve el privilegio de ser parte de un grupo de artistas que fue al Cañón Eco en High Bar en el Río Fraser. Nuestro anfitrión Wayne Larsen del Lago Big Bar no llevó a través de montañas y paisajes hermosísimos a este lugar tan especial. Como hace uno para poner todo eso sobre el lienzo? Como uno transmite el tamaño y la escala de lo que tiene al frente? La grandeza del terreno y el tamaño del cañón mismo hacían muy difícil poder pintarlo entero por lo me concentré en pintar una zona en particular, la zona que tenía más contraste. Decidí transformar todo el día en un ejercicio. Estaba determinada en estudiar cada forma con sus colores y valores sin preocuparme mucho por el cuadro final. Durante todo el cuadro simplemente me dije a mí misma: "Son solamente formas, son solamente formas, de qué color son?" Al final del día no estaba muy satisfecha con el cuadro pero realmente me habían gustado las pinceladas y todo lo que había aprendido simplemente mirando y grabando lo que tenía al frente. Ahora, cuando miro el cuadro de nuevo, estoy bastante contenta con cómo quedó.
He puesto acá algunas fotos para tratar de mostrarles un poco el paisaje que teníamos. Qué tamaños!.
Y finalmente les muestro este vídeo maravilloso que me trae tantos recuerdos… Jill Philipchuck sacó fotos durante todos los días que estuvimos en Big Bar. Después ella puso todas esas fotos en este vídeo, muchísimas gracias Jill!!! Wayne y Janine fueron anfitriones excelentes, Janine cocinó y nos mantuvo tan bien alimentados. Estamos tan agradecidas de que nos hayan invitado este año de nuevo. Hasta el año que viene!!
One evening while at Big Bar Lake this past May a few of us painters decided to set up and do a painting after dinner before the light disappeared. It was all great at the beginning, had the painting pretty much blocked in when the mosquitoes decided to come out and oh my Gosh, they were out with a vengeance!! I hadn't seen mosquitoes like that in a long time!! It became a battle to try and put marks on the canvas while swatting the mosquitoes away! I called this karate style painting because it looked like we were doing karate moves with our arms while trying to paint at the same time!! Needless to say, the following evening, I didn't even try to set up! :)

Un atardecer cuando estábamos en el Lago Big Bar este Mayo pasado, unos cuantos pintores decidimos hacer un cuadro después de cenar antes de que la luz despareciera. Todo estuvo bárbaro al comienzo, tenía el bloqueo inicial listo cuando aparecieron los mosquitos y oh con qué ganas aparecieron!! Hacía mucho que no veía tantos mosquitos. Se convirtió en una batalla para espantar a los mosquitos y poner pintura en el lienzo, por eso le puse Cuadro Estilo Karate, ya que parecía que estábamos haciendo movimientos de karate con los brazo!! Demás está decir que al atardecer siguiente ni siquiera traté!! :)
Still sharing Ashcroft
paintings..... For the weekend of the paint-out, which has been
happenning for the last few years at the end of May, it is truly
wonderful to see how the community opens their doors for us painters to
invade their hometown and create. They help with set up, everybody is
friendly and lots come out to the show on the last day. Sundance Ranch
is one of the many ranches in the area just outside the city and it is
where we painted on Sunday morning. We are so thankful they allowed us
painters to go onto their property, we had a great time!

Todavía les sigo mostrando cuadros de Ashcroft.... Para el fin de semana de la pintada que se organiza el último fin de semana en Mayo de cada año es realmente maravilloso ver cómo la comunidad abre las puertas a los pintores que invaden su pueblo para crear. Ayudan con la organización, todos muestran mucha amabilidad y muchos vienen a la muestra del último día. La Estancia Sundance está apenas en las afueras de la ciudad y es donde pintamos el domingo a la mañana. Estamos tan agradecidas de que los dueños nos hayan permitido pintar en su propiedad, la pasamos tan bien!
