Last Fall I did this painting of the gorgeous succulents urn outside Calla Design , a design store on Estevan Village that represents my work. It was done Plein air and I really enjoyed both the process and the finished product. It sent me on a quest for more succulents to paint! Now, I am eagerly watching them grow and plan to do a few more paintings with these succulents!

Este otoño pasado hice este cuadro de las hermosas plantas en la urna que está afuera de Calla Design, un negocio de diseno que representa representa mi arte en Estevan Village. Lo pinté al aire libre y realmente disfruté tanto del proceso como del trabajo terminado. Me dio ganas de buscar más plantas para pintar! Ahora las veo crecer  con entusiasmo y tengo planes de pintar  mas cuadros con ellas !

As you may know, we spend a lot of time on the water especially in the summer. We get to enjoy weekends or extended times on our sailboat, we typically drop anchor and spend the night in quiet bays. When the activity of the day starts slowing down, the day is over, and everybody gets tucked in for the night, you get to see cosy views like this one. I wonder, are they playing cards inside? Board games, reading? Times like these are usually "unconnected" times, with no or very limited Internet access. That's what we usually do, marathon board games, cards championships that last the whole trip and create good memories. "Evening on the water" is an 8x8, oil on canvas and it's available at South Shore Gallery in Sooke.

Como ya tal vez sepan, nosotros pasamos mucho tiempo sobre el agua, especialmente en los veranos. Disfrutamos de fines de semana o vacaciones más largas en nuestro velero, normalmente bajamos el ancla y pasamos la noche en bahías muy tranquilas. Cuando se acaba la actividad del día, se empieza hacer de noche y todos y se encienden las luces, se ven muchas vistas como esta. Yo me pregunto, estarán jugando a las cartas o a juegos de mesa, tal vez leyendo? Esto son tiempos "desconectados", con muy poca o nada de Internet. Eso es lo que hacemos nosotros normalmente, jugamos juegos de mesa o hacemos campeonatos de cartas que a veces duran el viaje completo y creamos así muchos buenos recuerdos. "Atardecer en el Agua" es un óleo de 20×20 cm y está disponible en la Galería South Shore en Sooke.

When I finished this one yesterday afternoon I was pretty sure I would come into the studio this morning and wipe it off, I was not too happy with it, but today with fresh eyes, it MAY have some redeeming qualities. Posting it here nonetheless, the challenge is to show up to the studio and do a small painting everyday, not to make all 30 great paintings....  wouldn't that be nice??? I do like some of the different shapes I used to describe the greens....  Next!!

Cuando terminé este cuadro ayer a la tarde, estaba segura   que hoy iba a entrar al taller y la iba a borrar, no estaba muy contenta pero cuando hoy la miré con ojos frescos, TAL VEZ se salve.... La publico de todas formas, el desfío es ir al taller todos los días y crear un cuadro pequeño, no es hacer 30 cuadros espectaculares.... no sería bárbaro eso?? Lo que rescato de acá son las formas que usé para
representar los verdes..... vamos al siguiente!!

I may still have a couple of days left of this gorgeous bouquet of tulips.... then it may be back to landscapes or  more flowers, we'll see what the mood calls for..... It's supposed to be cold for the next few days, even  possible snow for the weekend so I may need to keep up with flowers to pretend Spring s closer that it truly is!

Me deben quedar un par de días  mas de este ramo de flores tan hermoso..... después tal vez vuelva a paisajes o a mas flores, veremos de qué me dan ganas.... supuestamente va a estar frio estos días, hasta tal vez tengamos nieve este fin de semana asi que tal vez tenga que seguir con las flores para hacer de cuenta que la primavera está mas cerca de lo que realmente está!

 These are #12 & 13 of the 30 Day painting Challenge. I did paint  everyday but didn't get to post a couple of days ago. It was Family Day Long weekend and getting out for a walk to enjoy the sunshine took precedent over posting. I'm switching gears from landscapes for a few days by painting my other love: flowers. I am still using the same principles I have been applying this past week... Thicker paint, limited number of strokes, less censorship.....

I have donated this painting to the BC Cancer Foundation and their event Jingle Mingle happening on Nov 30th at the Empress Hotel here in Victoria, BC. I painted this one last Spring on Moss Street when the cherry blossoms were out, what a show!! I can hardly wait to paint them again next year!
I love what the Foundation is fundraising for: To be able to purchase a PET-CT Scan  machine so that patients don't have to go to Vancouver for imaging. We have all been touched in some way or other by this horrible disease, either personally or through friends or family. Having a machine in town would make things a lot easier for people on the island. Please consider attending the event, tickets can be purchased at the site above. It should be a good event with a Silent and Live Auction, Raffle and more! This is just my humble contribution to the cause.

He donado este cuadro a la Fundación de Cancer de British Columbia y su evento Jingle Mingle que ocurre el 30 de Noviembre en el Empress Hotel aquí en Victoria. Pinté este cuadro esta primavera pasada en la calle Moss cuando todos los cerezos estaban en flor.  Qué espectaculo!! No veo la hora que vuelvan a florecer este año que viene para pintarlos de nuevo!
Me gustó mucho  el motivo de este evento: para recaudar fondos para comprar una máquina para tomografías en estaría en el hospital de acá, de este modo, los pacientes con cancer no van a tener que ir a Vancouver para hacer estos estudios. Desafortunadamente, el cancer nos ha tocado a todos, de forma directa o indirecta con amigos o familiares. Tener un tomógafo en Victoria sería tanto mejor para las familias que estan pasando por estas dificulatdes. Por favor, consideren ir al evento, las entradas están en venta en el sitio que les muestro arriba, va a estar muy beno, con subastas, rifas y mas! esta es mi humilde contribución para esta causa.

I had the privilege of being in a group of artists that went into Echo Canyon in High Bar on the Fraser River last May. Our host Wayne Larsen from Big Bar Lake drove us though mountains and gorgeous views to this spot that was quite something. How do you put it all onto canvas?? How do you convey the size and scale of what you have in front of you?? The vastness of the terrain and the size of the canyon itself made it very difficult to paint the whole thing so instead of trying to fit it all, which is quite impossible by the way, I chose to zone into one particular area, the one that had the most contrast and decided to turn the day into an exercise. I was determined to study each shape with its colours and values without being too concerned about the finished painting. Through the whole painting I just kept saying to myself: "It' just shapes, it's just shapes, what colour is it?". At the end of the day I wasn't too impressed by my painting but really liked the strokes and how much I had leanrt by just looking and recording. Now, when I look at the painting I am actually pretty happy with it.

Este Mayo pasado tuve el privilegio de ser parte de un grupo de artistas que fue al Cañón Eco en High Bar en el Río Fraser. Nuestro anfitrión Wayne Larsen del Lago Big Bar no llevó a través de montañas y paisajes hermosísimos a este lugar tan especial. Como hace uno para poner todo eso sobre el  lienzo? Como uno transmite el tamaño y la escala de lo que tiene al frente? La grandeza del terreno y el tamaño del cañón mismo hacían muy difícil poder pintarlo entero  por lo me concentré en pintar una zona en particular, la zona que tenía más contraste. Decidí transformar todo el día en un ejercicio. Estaba determinada en estudiar cada forma con sus colores y valores sin preocuparme mucho por el cuadro final. Durante todo el cuadro simplemente me dije a mí misma: "Son solamente formas, son solamente formas, de qué color son?" Al final del día no estaba muy satisfecha con el cuadro pero realmente me habían gustado las pinceladas y todo lo que había aprendido simplemente mirando y grabando lo que tenía al frente. Ahora, cuando miro el cuadro de nuevo, estoy bastante contenta con cómo quedó.

He puesto acá algunas fotos para tratar de mostrarles un poco el paisaje que teníamos. Qué tamaños!.

Y finalmente les muestro este vídeo maravilloso que me trae  tantos recuerdos… Jill Philipchuck sacó fotos durante todos los días que estuvimos en Big Bar. Después ella puso todas esas fotos en este vídeo, muchísimas gracias Jill!!! Wayne y Janine fueron anfitriones excelentes, Janine cocinó y nos mantuvo tan bien alimentados. Estamos tan agradecidas de que nos hayan invitado este año de nuevo. Hasta el año que viene!!

I think this set is my favourite of the whole 30 days and for sure from the tip to Arctic Haven. From today on, several times I tried doing things differently, something more like what I was doing in the studio at the beginning of the challenge. Remember I mentioned I was trying different croppings of the same thing? Well, that's what I did here, I knew I had enough time to do a couple of paintings so I set up 2 canvases and did them almost simultaneously. I wanted to try out different  formats, similar compositions, more of that, less of  something else. You get the picture.....

In this case I was totally fascinated (as I was for most of the trip) with the Fall colours of this landscape. We had gone to Apocalypse Island.... That name was given to the island by  a couple of our guides: when they went to the island for the fist time they liked it so much  they decided this would be a pretty good place to come and hide if there ever was an apocalypse (I hear they were talking about  a zombie invasion at the time, haha,.... anyway, ...They called the beach Paradise Island and it certainly was like paradise that day!
I wanted to try a horizontal and a square format and include some of the lake behind in one of them. So I did! I like them both, I would maybe combine elements from both in the future to make a larger piece.

Estos dos cuadros son mis favoritos de los 30 días creo y  del viaje al ártico. A partir de este momento empecé a trabajar de forma diferente y tiene que ver con cómo ya estaba pintando en el taller al comienzo del desafío. Recuerdan que les había dicho que estaba tratando de hacer distintas composiciones de la misma cosa? Bueno, eso es lo que empecé hacer acá. Como yo sabía que tenía suficiente tiempo para hacer un padre un par de cuadros, puse dos lienzos y los hice al mismo tiempo. Trataba de probar diferentes formatos, composiciones similares pero distintas,  más de esto, menos de lo otro… Se dan cuenta…
En este caso, estaba totalmente fascinada, como estuve la mayor parte del tiempo, con los colores del otoño de este paisaje. Este día habíamos ido a una isla que se llama Isla Apocalipsis, ese nombre vino de que un par de guías , se enamoraron de esta isla cuando fueron por primera vez (y  de acuerdo lo que me contaron estaban hablando de una invasión de zombies y cosas así, ja ja)  Concluyeron con que este sería el lugar ideal para esconderse si en algún momento había un apocalipsis… Llamaron a la playa a la que llegamos la playa del paraíso.  Y la verdad es que ese día fue como estar en el paraíso…
Quería probar un formato horizontal y uno cuadrado e incluir un poco de lago que había detrás en uno de ellos, y eso fue lo que hice. Me gustan los dos cuadros, tal vez  combine elementos de los dos en el futuro para hacer una pieza más grande

This is the second painting I did that morning in the Ashcroft Hills, it is just a continuation of the one I did that same day, didn't even move the easel just focused on the section to the left of the previous painting.  The storm was coming in so quickly and the clouds were absolutely gorgeous. That is what I was interested in that day, the clouds and how to capture them best.

Remember that I am wanting to help out with the fires happening in BC this  summer. As my way to contribute,  I'll donate to the BC Fires Fund 50% of the  proceeds from the sale of any Ashcroft/Caribou paintings. Este es el segundo cuadro que hice en las laderas de Ashcroft, es simplemente una continuación del que les mostré anteriormente, ni siquiera moví el atril,  simplemente pinté lo que había a la izquierda del cuadro anterior. La tormenta se venía tan rápido y las formaciones de las nubes eran increíbles, en eso estaba interesada, las nubes y cómo poder capturarlas de mejor forma.

Recuerden que quiero ayudar con los incendios que están ocurriendo en nuestra provincia este verano. I was going through my files here in Blogger and  found  some unfinished, unpublished posts!! So I'll be sharing them in the next few ones.


This painting (which I love by the way) is one I did in Ashcroft last year. I have already shared with you a  few times how infatuated I was with the colours of the desert and  this was a great morning enjoying them at my easel. But first of all,  I made sure there were no snakes around, I am completely terrified of them, I stomped around very hard while finding my spot, I was careful to walk BEHIND my friends Deborah and Sharlene (good friend I am, eh?) and set up to paint. I ended up having so much fun experimenting with brushwork and just trusting the process that day. I was not tied to the "results" by which I mean I was not concentrating on to "make a good painting", I was just having fun. The result in the end was something very loose and I think my enjoyment shows through. I did 2 paintings in that spot of almost the same view  (next one in next post!). It's from a field on the road coming down to Ashcroft from Cache Creek.

On a different note it's very sad to think that these hills are burned at present time with the horrendous fires happening in our province this summer. I can totally understand how quickly it  can spread with how dry everything is.  As my way to help out with the fires,  I'll be donating to the BC Fires Fund 50% of the  proceeds from the sale of any Ashcroft paintings during the months of July and August.  So if you are interested in this one or any other painting from Ashcroft, please let me know or head over to Calla Design and talk to Sue or Janice since I took the paintings there a while ago.

Ya saben quien en Ascroft el año pasado

Estaba mirando unos archivos aquí en Blogger y encontré algunas cosas que nunca había terminado ni publicado, así es que voy a mostrárselos de a poco.

Este cuadro (que me encanta), es uno que hice en Ashcroft el año pasado.  Ya les he contado varias veces qué enamorada he estado de los colores del desierto y este fue una gran mañana jugando con estos colores. Primero que nada me asegure que no hubiera víboras alrededor, hice mucho ruido con los pies mientras elegía mi lugar, me asegure de caminar DETRAS de mis amigas Deborah y Sharlene (que buena amiga soy no?)  y me puse a pintar. Terminé experimentando con las pinceladas y simplemente confiando en el proceso del día. No estaba preocupada por los resultados, es decir, el objetive no era producir un buen cuadro, si no simplemente disfrutar el momento. El resultado al final fue algo muy relajado, y me parece que se nota. Ese día hice dos cuadros en el mismo lugar de casi la misma vista, en el próximo post se los muestro. Es desde un campo al costado de la ruta que baja  hacia Ashcroft desde Cache Creek.

Es muy triste pensar que todas estas laderas se han quemado con los incendios en la provincia este último mes. Puedo entender completamente lo rápido que puede desparramarse el fuego con lo seco que está todo.  Con la intención de ayudar con los incendios y a todos los evacuados y afectados,  voy a donar al Fondo para Incendios de British Columbia el 50% de lo que yo saque de la venta de cualquier cuadro de Ashcroft durante los meses de Julio y Agosto. Si está interesado en este, o en cualquier otro de Ashcroft, me avisan a mi o vayan hacia Calla Design  y hablen con Janice o Sue.

This is a painting I did a while back from flowers I just gathered from my yard. Love spring and flowers. I love seeing what is coming back every year and how things I planted last year gain strength the second season as they mature. Maybe I am inclined to post this today thinking of flowers and warmth as this doesn't feel like June at all but more like Mid March! Hopefully Summer starts this week :)

Este es un cuadro que hice hace un tiempo con flores que había cortado de mi jardín. Me encanta la primavera y las flores, me encanta ver cómo vuelven las cosas de la temporada pasada y ver como maduran las plantas de un año al otro. Este cuadro y muchos otros está disponible en Calla Design en a Villa Estevan en Oak Bay, Pasen a visitar a Janice y Sue, les va a encantar el negocio que tienen! (Avenida Estevan 2541) Tal vez estoy publicando este cuadro hoy pensando en flores y calor ya que no parece que estamos a mediados de Junio, sino a mediados de Marzo! Start of the Season

This year we did our first sailing trip quite early in the season, Easter weekend. It was a very relaxing time in which I got to do a fair bit of painting. This one is in Todd Inlet, just outside the famous Butchart Gardens. Even though the wind was blowing outside, inside the protected cove it was so still there was a perfect mirror reflection during the evening.

 

Este año comenzamos la temporada de navegación bastante temprana, el fin de semana de Pascua. Fue un fin de semana muy tranquilo en el que pude pintar bastante. Éste cuadro es Todd Inlet, justo afuera de los famosos Butchart Gardens.  Había bastante viento afuera de estar bahía tan resguardada pero aquí adentro estaba tan calmo que el reflejp era como un espejo ese anochecer.

In Hawaii a very popular thing to do is Stand-Up Paddle Boarding. At any point in time, you'll look  out at the ocean and there are at least a couple of paddlers out there, many times dozens of them. This one day at Nipili Beach in West Maui, there were so many that I decided to put some in my painting.

En Hawaii, el surf de remo es una actividad muy popular. En cualquier momento, si uno mira hacia el océano hay por lo menos un par de tablas en la distancia, muchas veces hay docenas! Este día en particular en la playa Nipili en Maui del Oeste, había tantos que decidí incluirlos en mi cuadro!

When I knew I was coming to Tahoe and that I would have some time available for painting by myself I thought I would check online to see if there was a plein air group in the area similar to the Alfrescoes I paint with in Victoria. I was happy to find the Reno Tahoe Plein Air Painters. I contacted the blog administrator to see if they could tell me where they would be painting while I was in the area  in the off-chance it would work. And it kind of did!

I was thrilled when Carolyn Jean Thompson got back to me and arranged to meet me for painting together on Thursday. I was sorry I couldn't meet the rest of the group but it was absolutely wonderful to meet this talented artist, a real treat to paint with a local, exchange some stories and share lunch when we were done. Thank you Carolyn, it was so kind of you to come out! I enjoyed myself tremendoulsy.... You know you have a painting buddy for the next time you come to Vancouver Island!

Carolyn suggested we met at Sand Harbour State Park and what a good choice that was! The rocks, the colours and the whole scenery were just gorgeous. The painting above is the one I did that morning. I was starting to make mud which is a sure sign for me to stop. I'll correct some things and finish it once back in the studio.

Cuando supe que iba a ir a la zona de Tahoe y que iba tener tiempo para pintar se me ocurrió que tal vez podía ver si había un grupo de pintores en la zona parecido mi grupo de Victoria, los Al Frescos, con los que yo pinto a menudo. Me puse muy contenta cuando encontré los Pintores al Aire Libre de Reno y Tahoe. Contacté al administrador del blog para ver si me podían decir dónde iban a pintar mientras yo estuviera y si sería posible juntarme con ellos. Y funcionó!  Estuve muy contenta cuando Carolyn Jean Thompson me contestó y arreglamos para juntarnos para pintar el jueves. A pesar de poder conocer a mas gente en el grupo, fue absolutamente maravilloso conocer a esta artista tan talentosa, fue una oportunidad fantástica para pintar con alguien de la zona, intercambiar historias y compartir el almuerzo una vez que terminamos. Gracias Carolyn, fue tan amable de tu parte juntarte conmigo,  ya sabés que tenés una compañera de pintura si venís a la Isla de Vancouver!
Carolyn sugirió que fueramos al  Parque Estatal Sand Harbour y qué buena elección que fue! Las piedras, los colores y el paisaje en general eran hermosísimas. El cuadro de arriba es el que hice esa mañana. Estaba empezando a "hacer barro" y esa es una señal para que yo pare de pintar. Voy a corregir algunas cosas y terminarlo una vez que esté de nuevo en el taller.

Day 28 of 30: Clivia

My mom and dad in Argentina have a beautiful garden and they have an area that is full of agapanthus and clivias in their back yard.  I have a clivia here too but it is an indoor plant This past week it gave me a bloom which of course makes me smile and needed to be painted!
I am very pleased with lots of things in this painting...  I am not done, have to resolve quite a few things still but overall it is going in the right direction.  The light changed throughout the day in my studio (I started early in the morning, stopped at 9.30 and came back after 1 pm) and I can't keep trying to finish it in the current lighting conditions, so I will have to wait till the morning again. For now, here it goes....
At one point in the painting I had lost the drawing (well.... actually at more than one point :) so I used my kemper tool to go back into it,  redraw the shapes to see see them better and keep going. It was very useful to do this. I also use my kemper tool usually to sign my paintings by scraping paint off.

My mamá y mi papá en Argentina tienen un jardín hermoso con una zona  llena de agapantos y clivias. Yo también tengo una clivia acá pero es una planta de interior. Esta semana pasada me ha florecido lo que me puso muy contenta por supuesto!
Estoy bastante contenta con este cuadro.... no está terminado, tengo que resolver unas cuantas cosas mas pero en general va en la dirección adecuada. La luz me cambió durante el día en mi taller, (comencé temprano, paré a las 9.30 y volví despueés de la 1 de la tarde) y no puedo seguir tratando  de terminar con la luz tan diferente, voy a tener que esperar hasta mañana . Por ahora, acá va.....
En un momento había perdido las formas en el cuadro (bueno, en realidad mas de una vez!! :)  Usé mi herramienta Kemper para dibujar de nuevo las formas y rescatar el dibujo de esa forma. (Tiene puntas de goma que levantan la pintura).  Me fue muy útil hacer eso, uso esta herramienta muchas veces para firmar los cuadros levantando la pintura.

Back a couple of months ago I was in Vancouver visiting my daughter when I went to run an errand in the mall across the street from her apartment.  I was stopped dead in my tracks at this florist that had such an incredible number of orchids, I had to take photos of them!! You may see a few more of these maybe?? I need to get back in this painting when the oil is not so wet. Loved painting he backgraound.

Hace un par de meses estaba visitando a mi hija en Vancouver cuando fui a comprar un par de cosas al shopping que está al frente de su departamento. Iba caminando y de repente vi esta florería con una cantidad tan impresionanate de orquideas que tuve que parar a sacar fotos por supuesto! Tal vez vean mas cuadro de orquídeas en el futuro?? tengo que volver a un par de  areas en este cuadro pero quiero esperar a que se seque un poco la pintura.

Llevé 2 cuadros hoy a la Galería de Arte de Victoria para una muestra que se llama Amor a Primera Vista. Estoy muy contenta de tener 2 cuadros aceptados en esta muestra, va a haber mas de 100 cuadros para que uds disfruten. Los dos cuadros que estan arriba son los lleve hoy, tal vez los recuerden de principios de mes.
