So I did another painting of these strawberries, just moved them a bit and got going with them. Continuing with the Berry  Saga, it seems to me they have sorted out their differences and they are standing a bit closer to each other..... Phew! Fight averted! See Here for Episode 1
It's interesting  to see the process I follow, typically I'll be working and I feel it still needs a lot to go but so many times I step back and voila! it's done!! Here I felt I still needed to keep adding some reds but when I put it next to the other one and off the easel, it looked just fine to me!

Hice otro cuadro con las frutillas, las moví un poquito y empecé a pintar.... Continuando con la saga, me parece que  han arreglado las cosas y ya están un poco mas cerca la una de la otra.... Phew! Se evadió la pelea esta vez! Vean acá el episodio 1

Es interesante observar el proceso que sigo, típicamente, estoy pintando y me parece que me falta mucho para terminar pero muchas veces, una vez que paro, tomo un poco de distancia y voilá! está terminado! En este caso me parecía que tenía que seguir agregando  distintos tonos de rojo pero cuando la saqué del atril y la puse junto al cuadro anterior me di cuenta que ya estaba!

Back to still-life for the last few days of the challenge so I went to the fridge and picked from what we had available. :) When I was posing these strawberries it seemed to me that they had their backs to each other and were in the middle of an argument..... one of them is saying "We should start talking and try to make things work.....'  Must be losing my mind if strawberries are starting to say stuff  .... haha.... just having fun in the studio!

Decidí volver a las naturalezas muertas los últimos días del desafío así que fui a la heladera y me fijé que teníamos disponible. Cuando estaba arreglando estas frutillas para pintarlas, me pareció que estaban paradas de espaldas discutiendo .... y una de ellas decía "Tenemos que empezar a hablar....." y tratar de arreglar las cosas... debo estar medio loca si las frutillas están empezando a hablar , jaja!.... simplemente me estoy diviertiendo en el taller!!

It's supposed to be cold for the next few days, even  possible snow for the weekend so I may need to keep up with flowers to pretend Spring s closer that it truly is!

Me deben quedar un par de días  mas de este ramo de flores tan hermoso..... después tal vez vuelva a paisajes o a mas flores, veremos de qué me dan ganas.... supuestamente va a estar frio estos días, hasta tal vez tengamos nieve este fin de semana asi que tal vez tenga que seguir con las flores para hacer de cuenta que la primavera está mas cerca de lo que realmente está!

Day 11 of 30: Hollyhocks

This  past summer I took a photo of these beautiful hollyhocks from my daughter's boss' garden. I have never painted them nor have I had them in my garden. Well.... today this is changing, I am painting them and I will make sure I have some  growing in my yard next summer! Love the shapes of the flowers and the buds growing on the stocks!!

After the first brush-stroke, the canvas assumes a life of its own; at this point, you become both governor and spectator to your own event. (Anonymous)

Este verano  saqué una foto de estas hermosas  "malvas" (no sé si esta es la traducción exacta, en Argentina yo no había visto estas plantas)  que estaban en el jardín de la casa del jefe de mi hija. Nunca había pintado estas flores ni tampoco las he tenido en mi jardín, bueno, hoy las cosas cambian. Las estoy pintando y voy a plantar seguro algunas en mi jardín para tener flores este vearno! Me encantan la forma de la flor y  los pimpollos que crecen en el tallo.

Después de la primera pincelada, el lienzo asume vida propia; entonces tú te conviertes
en gobernante y espectador de tu propio evento. (Anonymous)

Day 9 of 30: Untitled - Work in Progress

Today was one of those days that I had no real desire to be in the studio. :( but I came in anyway, worked on this one which I had started a couple of days ago and even though it is closer it is not done yet. I know exactly what I need to do tomorrow though. I also worked on a different painting but ran out of time as I had a commitment this afternoon. I am back in the studio now, did some more but chopped up activity like that is not working so instead of pushing forward for the sake of putting strokes on canvas and calling them done, I am deciding to step away and come back tomorrow with different energy. Have a good evening everyone!
I am out of here, to probably sit in front of the TV and do nothing!

Hoy fué uno de esos días que no tenía ganas realmente de estar en el taller :( pero vine lo mismo, trabajé un rato en este cuadro y aunque está casi terminado, le falta todavía. Sé exactamente lo que tengo que hacer mañana. También trabajé en otro cuadro pero me quedé sin tiempo ya que tenía un compromiso esta tarde. Volví ahora, traté de terminar uno de ellos pero cuando la actividad está entrecortada así no funciona. Así es que he decidido que en lugar de seguir tratando de poner pinceladas por poner, para poder decir que está terminado, lo dejo y sigo mañana con mas energía! Que tengan una buena noche! Me voy de acá, probablemente a sentarme en frente del televisor y hacer nada!

A few years ago I started sort of by accident to collect Nutcrackers, every year I seem to get one or 2 added to my collection and by now I have a fair number of them.... This year I wanted to paint them. So I set out to do it and he started getting ticked off with me with all the facials and different eyebrow and nose jobs he was getting! He was in much need of dental work a few times through the panting session. We had LOTS of conversations back and forth! In the end he was  pretty pleased with his portrait!


I was wondering a bit about the history behind nutcrackers, specially the look on their faces, they look very scary and mean. My son Mateo used to be afraid of them as a little kid. This is some interesting stuff I found, I specially like the reason for their stern looks.

According to German folklore, nutcrackers were given as keepsakes to bring good luck to your family and protect your home. The legend says that a nutcracker represents power and strength and serves like a trusty watch dog guarding your family from evil spirits and danger. A fierce protector, the nutcracker bares its teeth to the evil spirits and serves as the traditional messenger of good luck and goodwill. (We are very protected now then!!)

Hace algunos años empecé medio por accidente a coleccionar cascanueces, todos los años agrego uno o dos a la colección y ahora ya tengo unos cuantos.... Este año decidí pintarlos. Así es que empecé con uno y él se me enojó bastante con todos los tratamientos para la piel y los distitntos looks que le dí en las cejas y la nariz! En algunos momentos, le hacía mucha falta ir a ver al dentista! Tuvimos muchas conversaciones mientra lo pintaba y al final me parece que él terminó bastante contento con su retrato! :)

Tenía curiosidad por saber un poco sobre la historia de los cascanueces, especialmente el por qué
de sus miradas enojadas. Mi hijo Mateo les tenía miedo cualdo era chiquito. Acá hay un poco de información bastante interesante que encontré. Me gusta especialmente la razón por la que tienen esa mirada tan enojada. 

De acuerdo con el folklore alemán, los cascanueces se daban de regalo para que trajeran buena suerte a la familia y para que protegieran el hogar. La leyenda dice que el cascanuez representa poder y fortaleza y sirve de guardián de tu casa contra espíritus malignos y peligro. Es un protector feroz, que muestra sus dientes a los espíritus malignos y sirve de mensajero tradicional de buena suerte y buena voluntad. (Estamos muy protegidos entonces en mi casa!)

The Christmas season is here and this year I am painting it! I got this one a few weeks ago and they will be everywhere in town!  Poinsettias are very typical of the season here in Norteamerica but it was never like that for me growing up in Argentina. We had one that was a large bush in the back yard; back home it was not associated with Christmas (that I know of??). Time to start getting the Christmas decorations out, to decorate the house and also to paint some!

Está llegando la época de Navidad y este año tengo planeado pintarla! La Estrella Federal es una planta (de interior) muy típica de Navidad aquí en Norteamerica pero no era así en Argentina, donde no se relaciona con la Navidad (que yo sepa??) Teníamos una arbusto grande en el patio y creo que allí está todavía. Es hora de empezar a  sacar la decoraciones de Navidad, para decorar la casa y pintar algunas cosas !!

This is a study on red I did last week. Red is a colour that can be tricky for me which prompted me to study it. (you may see a few more red ones coming through.... ) The inspiration to set up a still life like this one came from a Liz Wiltzen's workshop I took a few years ago as well as a blog post she wrote on this. I am also part of an online group/course in which we have been focusing on colour for the last couple of weeks, red was again one my choices of study. It took a few goes at it for me to be happy with it.

Este es un estudio del color rojo que hice la semana pasada. El rojo es un color que puede ser complicado para mi y por eso fue que elegí estudiarlo un poco (tal vez vean mas cuadros con mucho rojo). La inspiración para este arreglo vino de un curso que tomé con Liz Wiltzen hace un par de años y un blog post que ella escribió al respecto. Además formo parte de un grupo/clase  en internet en el que en estas últimas semanas hemos estado estudiando color y el rojo fue uno de los que elegí. Volví a retocarlo varias veces hasta que estuve satisfecha con el resultado.

I had to paint a poppy yesterday with Remembrance Day today. I have to admit I was  a bit intimidated by the ruffles in the petals, it is very easy to get lost in them. But in the end, I think it worked, it is VERY wet and this is the best photo I was able to take.
I am looking forward to going to my son's school  today for the Remembrance Day Ceremony. We were there last year and  it was very touching. They named every single soldier that went to that school and died in the wars and as they did that, they snuffed a candle for each one of them.  There was a very solemn air in the room,  everthing gets a new meaning when you can put names and faces to moments like these. This painting is a homage to those, both soldiers and innocent citizens, that lost their lives in any war. Hopefully one day we will rememeber and not go there again.

Tuve que pintar una amapola ya que hoy es el Dia de los Caídos en la Guerra. La verdad es que le tenía un poco de miedo a todos los pliegos en los pétalos de la amapola, es muy fácil perderse ahí adentro pero al final me parece que funcionó. La pintura está muy muy húmeda y esta es la mejor foto que le pude sacar.

Estamos listos para ir hoy a la Ceremonia de Los Caídos en la Guerra en la escuela de mi hijo. Fuimos el año pasado y  fue muy emotiva, nombraron a cada alumno que fue a esa escuela y murió en una guerra y a medida que los nombraban, apagaban una vela por cada uno.  Había por supuesto un aire muy solemne en el gimnasio, todo tiene un significado diferente cuando se ponen nombres y caras  a ocasiones como estas. Esta pintura es un homenage a todos los caídos en cualquier guerra (soldados o ciudadanos inocentes). Ojalá que algún día recordemos  y no estemos nuevamente en esas situaciones.

This shot was taken in a little patio in Brunate, which is a very small town above Como City. You get to it by means of a cable car as it is at the top of the mountain. (you can also go by car)  Very nice spot with beautiful views of Como City and the lake. If you ever visit, be prepared to walk endless hills and stairs! We certainly got our workout most days in Italy!

This pots  with Begonias were begging me to paint them, it was fun to paint them. :)

Esta  imágen fue tomada en Brunate, un pequeño pueblo arriba de la ciudad de Como.  Hay que tomar un funicular para llegar ya que está en la punta de la montaña pero también se puede subir por auto. Un lugar hermoso como vistas paroramincas de la Ciudad de Como y del lago. Si alguna visitan este lugar estén preparados para hacer subidas y escaleras eternas! Sí que hicimos ejercicio en Italia casi todos los días!

Estas macetas con begonias me estaban suplicando que las pintara, y por supuesto tuve que hacerlo. :)

We are still in Tuscany, actually we are in the heart of it! We stayed this one night at this beautiful spot between Florence and Rome. We spent a very relaxing afternoon close to Civitella in Val di Chiana at this excellent B&B called Il Borgo di Gebbia. (If you go to Italy and you are looking for a peaceful spot, do call them) The view was amazing, dinner cooked by our hosts was incredible and of course I took a few pictures. en esta hostería excelente llamada  Il Borgo di Gebbia (Si van a Italia y están buscando un lugar muy tranquilo, llamenlos!). La vista era espectacular, la cena que nos cocinaron nuestros anfitriones fue perfecta  y por supuesto saqué un montón de fotos, acá está lo que pinté de una de ellas. Espero que les guste! And there you thought we only painted red tulips! The truth is there was another painting of red and yellow fields which I am not too happy with so I haven't posted that one. There is only one more tulip festival painting left to show you after this one. We can then one move to other fun stuff!

This little one was the 3rd painting of the second day. In La Conner there is a myriad of barns and farm houses which are extremely interesting to paint. (This location would be a nice painting destination any time of the year because of this).  Many crooked barns and building, some almost falling down, with so much character! I hadn't done one with a typical barn this trip so I decided to pick this view in the distance. It was very windy and I was very pleased with my set up as it held just fine. I am using an Alla Prima Pochade box and I love it. The one I have is the  Yellowstone which is about 11x14. I can carry the wet panels in the lid and it is a breeze to set up. I also carry a backpack where I take some extra panels, paper towel, mineral spirits,  brushes and other paraphernalia but I must say I am learning  to take less and less all the time. (And of course my mug of coffee for the morning!)

Y acá ustedes pensaban que sólo pinté tulipanes rojos! La verdad es que  tengo otro con campos amarillos y rojos pero no me gusta mucho el resultado así que no lo he mostrado. Hay otro más de este viaje además de este y después podemos ver lo que he estado haciendo después y antes del viaje!

Esta fue la 3ra pintura del segundo día. En  La Conner hay una gran variedad de graneros y casas de campo que son muy interesantes para pintar. (Es por eso que en realidad es un lugar hermoso para pintar en cualquier época del año). Hay muchos edificios viejos todos torcidos que tienen muchísima personalidad, algunos parecen que ya se caen.  No había incluido un típico granero así que elegí esta vista a la distancia. Tuvimos bastante viento esa tarde y estuve muy contenta con mi equipo ya que aguantó el viento sin problemas. Tengo una caja Alla Prima Pochade, la Yellowstone es la mía, de alrededor 28x36.  Puedo transportar los paneles en la tapa y es muy fácil de armar. También llevo una mochila donde tengo paneles extra, toallas de papel, pinceles y otro montón de cosas. Pero debo admitir que estoy aprendiendo  a llevar cada vez menos cosas. Por supuesto también está el taza con café para la mañana!

Puddles (#79 of 100)

This was the second painting of the morning in our La Conner Painting Trip. There were so paintings to paint right then and there! There was time before lunch to do a small one so I settled to do the rows of red tulips with the mountains behind. Now, a little bit of information regarding how they do things. These fields are for the production of bulbs for sale, not for cut flowers. So what they do is at a certain point after the flower is open they actually deadhead them and toss the flowers in the rows, in that way the energy goes to the bulb instead of going to the flower and seed. A few weeks later they dig the bulbs up and get them ready for sale. While we were painting that morning, many workers got there and started going through the fields like locusts. You were looking at it and the purple field was turning green as the mass of workers moved along the rows. So I am almost ready to start painting the view  mentioned before with the mountains behind (see phot below) and I noticed that the field is getting smaller and smaller. They were cutting them faster that I could paint them so I decided to turn around and do the other side, as I said at the beginning, there were tons of paintings to be painted there! It had rained the night before so there were puddles in the rows creating nice lights and reflections.

Esta fue la segunda pintura de la mañana. Había tantos cuadros en ese mismo lugar! Tenía tiempo antes de almorzar y decidí hacer uno chiquito asi que me acomodé para pintar estas lineas de tulipanes rojos con las montañas atrás a la distancia. Un poquito de información con respecto a la industria de los tulipanes. Estos campos son para la producción de bulbos para la venta y no para flores para vender. A cierto punto, una vez que la flor se abre cortan las flores y las tiran ahí no mas en los surcos, de esta manera, la energía de la planta va hacia el bulbo y no a la flor y semilla. Unas semanas más tarde levantan los bulbos y los preparan para vender. La cosa es que mientras estabamos pintando esa mañana, muchos trabajadores llegaron a los campos y empezaron a cortar las flores como langostas. Estaba mirando un campo morado que lentamente se transformaba en verde cuando ellos  cortaban las flores. Y ahí estaba yo, lista para pintar un campo de tulipanes rojos y morados que se achicaba rapidamente. Los estaban cortando más rápido de lo que podía pintarlos! Por eso tuve que abandonar esa idea y mirar para el otro lado, pero como dije al comienzo, había muchísimos cuandros para pintar en este lugar. Había llovido la noche anterior y había muchos charcos que creaban lindas luces y reflejos.

I promised lots of colour in my last post and here you are!!! I just came back from a great week of plein air painting in La Conner, Washington. I went with 2 good friends and we had a blast! Lots of painting, art, art talk and friendship. 

We painted a lot, managed to do 3 paintings the first day which I will be showing to you in the next few posts. We were a touch late in the season but we had enough for sure! Fields of tulips as far as the eye can see in some spots. The smell in those fields that first day was just amazing. The weather cooperated, the light changed all the time of course as it always does in plein air painting but I was happy with what I created. More to come!

Les prometí mucho color en mi último blog y acá tienen!! Acabo de volver de un viaje a La Conner, Washington en EEUU. Fui con 2 amigas y la pasamos bárbaro! Mucha pintura, arte, charlas sobre arte y amistad. 

Pintamos mucho, logramos terminar 3 cuadros el primer día y acá va el primero. Voy  a seguir mostrándoles el resto en los próximos días. Llegamos un poco tarde en la temporada pero de todas formas tuvimos suficiente. Campos y campos de tulipanes por donde un mirara. El aroma ese primer día era espectacular. El tiempo cooperó, la luz cambiaba a cada rato por supuesto pero eso es siempre así cuando uno pinta afuera. Estoy muy satisfecha con lo que creé. Ya vienen más en los próximos días!

Wow! Time flies and I haven't posted for a few weeks now. I keep getting messages saying well??? Where are some new pieces??? How come you are not posting?? It is nice to be missed!!

It has been busy...  I have been devoting some time to marketing materials, like designing new business cards, new website (which I am very excited about! Not just quite yet ready to go live though) and I have been away to warmer sunnier climates!!

My husband and I spend a week in Punta Cana (no kids:)  It was a great trip where we visited with some old friends and made new ones. It was a customer appreciation trip from Wolseley, a plumbing wholesaler my husband deals with. They have organized trips like this one for the last couple of years;  last year they took us to Jamaica, this year was to Dominican Republic and next year is Cuba, hopefully we get the invite. :) Amazingly well organized, every single detail was taken care of and they always go the extra mile. Thank you Wolseley!. It was busy and didn't get to paint there but gathered LOTS of reference material; you will for sure see some "tropical" paintings soon! The colours of  the water, the sand and everything were absolutely incredible! I LOVE traveling and seeing new places and cultures!

         

This week after coming back  I worked on finishing 2 pieces that I wanted to submit for the upcoming FCA show, (Federation of Canadian Artists, a group I am an active member of). I was quite pleased with both of them but one of them sold and found a new home right away! Thank you Judy, hope you enjoy it for a long time!  The one that sold is the one in the photo above, I had shown you progress shots before. The photo is not good, but I am not home to take a better photo today and I just want to post this today! I'll post the other painting next week after I have submitted it, hopefully it makes the cut!

Wow! Cómo pasa el tiempo, hace varias semanas que no escribo en el blog y estoy recibiendo mensajes que dicen y? Cuándo nos mostrás la próxima? Es bueno ser extrañada!!

Han sido unas semanas muy ocupadas:  he estado trabajando en algunas cosas de marketing, como el diseño de nuevas tarjetas personales, nuevo sitio de internet (con el que estoy muy entusiasmada! No está listo todavía para mostrar pero le falta poco) y también he estado de viaje por tierras más calurosas y soleadas!!

Mi esposo y yo pasamos una semana en Punta Cana (sin chicos:) Fue un viaje muy lindo en el que nos visitamos con viejos amigos y conocimos nuevos. Era un viaje de apreciación al cliente ofrecido por Wolseley, uno de los distribuidores de materiales a quien mi esposo compra. Han organizado estos viajes los últimos años, el año pasado nos llevaron a Jamaica,  este año a República Dominicana y el año que viene a Cuba, ojalá que recibamos la invitación! Gracias Wolseley! Fue una semana ocupada y no pude pintar allá pero junté muchísimo material para pintar y estoy segura que van a ver algunas pinturas "tropicales" en el futuro! Los colores del agua, la arena, de todo son absolutamente increíbles! Me encanta viajar y visitar lugares y culturas nuevas.

Esta semana terminé dos cuadros que quiero presentar para adjudicación en una muestra del FCA (Federación de Artistas Canadienses, un grupo al que pertenezco). Estoy bastante contenta con los dos pero uno se vendio en el acto y encontró ya un hogar nuevo! Gracias Judy! Espero que lo disfrutes por mucho tiempo! Es el que está en la foto de arriba, yo les había mostrado una foto en progreso de este en Noviembre.   La foto de hoy no es muy buena, pero no estoy en casa hoy para sacar una mejor y quiero publicar este blog!!  Les voy a mostrar  el otro una vez que sepa el resultado para la muestra, espero que lo acepten!

I am very happy I got to do this little one as I didn't think I would be able to today. I only had a window of 1 hour so I grabbed one of the rebels from yesterday, taped it to my easel and gave it a quick portrait! I am pleased with it but I need to see it again tomorrow in daylight. I rushed off to a meeting afterwards, when I came back I quickly glanced at it and I think I would like to do do something with the background, maybe give it just some light on one side. We'll how it looks in the morning.

Estoy muy contenta de haber echo este cuadrito ya que no pensé que iba a tener tiempo hoy. Tenía solamente un estrecho de una hora para hacerlo así que agarré uno de los rebeldes de ayer, lo pegué con cinta de enmascarar a mi atril y le hice un retrato rápido. Estoy bastante satisfecha con como quedó pero lo tengo que ver de día mañana. Salí rápido para una reunión apenas lo terminé, cuando volví le eché una mirada rápida y  me parece que le quiero hacer algo al fondo, darle más luz de un lado tal vez. Ya veremos mañana.

Well.... The start of this one was great, I gave myself just an hour thinking that I was going to be able to only draw it and block in the colours but it was actually quite far along by the time the hour was done! Now, when I came back in the afternoon to finish it was different.... Kept going back and forth, adjusting and changing things and I have not accomplished what I wanted but again..... This is as far as I go today. These pears were the remnants of yesterday's still life that were just set aside and had become a still life in themselves. I liked the grouping last night when it kept catching my eye and that is what I did today. I apologize for the photo, it has a lot of glare but I have tried several ways and I just can't help it tonight. The colours are a bit off too.  I am very excited that there are about 8 other local artists that got inspired and decided to join the challenge. It is quite fun to see their creations and stories behind them.

Bueno.... El comienzo de esta anduvo bárbaro, me di una hora y pensé que iba a poder dibujar y  bloquear los colores solamente pero llogré bastante y estaba bastante avanzada al final de esa hora.  Pero cuando volví a la tarde fue otra historia..... Di un montón de vueltas, cambié y refiné algunas cosas y no he logrado lo que quería  pero es como ayer, es hasta acá donde llego hoy. Estas peras eran los restos de la naturaleza muerta de ayer que estaban simplemente al costado y se habían transformado en una naturaleza muerta ellas mismas. Me gustó el agrupamiento y lo seguía mirando de reojo todo el tiempo ayer así que hoy fue eso lo que pinté. Pido disculpas por la foto, tiene mucho brillo, he tratado varias veces y no logro sacar una mejor, los colores estan un poquito diferentes tambien.  Estoy muy contentaos que hay más o menos otros 8 artistas locales que se inspiraron y se han anotado en el desafío. Es muy bueno ver sus creaciones y sus historias. Gracias por pasar por acá!
