As we were on Cabin Island on Ennadai Lake for the whole day and there was so much to paint I actually just moved the easel about 10 feet, faced a different direction and set out to work again after finishing this painting and sharing a lovely lunch on the beach. 

I tried again doing 2 different paintings at the same time, trying out 2 different compositions. In this case, I wanted to see it looked with and without the sky portion and a square versus a rectangular version. When I say I do them at the same time, they are both up on the easel, one above the other, I sketch and do the block in for both of them and then I set out to work on one, to move on to the other one as I am pretty much finished with the first one. I am really enjoying these explorations of the same subject in different and I can hardly wait to have time back in the studio to keep diving.

One of the things that will always stand out for me from this day was that while I was painting, I actually heard silence for a long time. It's something that we don't experience very often and I have been trying to think whether I had heard it ever before. Typically while I'm painting, there's a breeze, the rustle of leaves, people close by talking, boats going by, etc. This particular day was eerily quiet, at one point when I actually noticed it, it felt as if I was in a vacuum. There was NOTHING, no sound at all for a while. It was a special day for sure.

Como estuvimos en la Isla Cabaña en el Lago Ennadai el día completo y había tanto para pintar simplemente moví mi atril unos metros después de terminar este cuadro, lo puse en otra dirección y empecé a trabajar de nuevo después de compartir un hermoso almuerzo en la playa. Traté de nuevo de hacer dos cuadros diferentes el mismo tiempo, tratando dos composiciones diferentes. En este caso quería ver cómo quedaba con o sin cielo y quería también ver la versión cuadrada o rectangular. Cuando digo que los hago al mismo tiempo, pongo los dos paneles en el atril, uno arriba de otro, hago el dibujo y bloqueo inicial para los dos y después empiezo a trabajar en uno, continuando con el segundo una vez que que terminado el primero. Estoy realmente disfrutando mucho de estos exploraciones del mismo tema en formas diferentes y tengo muchas ganas de volver al taller para seguir cone estos procesos  y series.

Una de las cosas que siempre voy a recordar de este día que mientras estaba pintando, escuché el sonido del silencio durante un largo tiempo. Es algo que no vivimos muy a menudo con tanto ruido alredor todo el tiempo. Estaba tratando de pensar si alguna vez he escuchado un silencio total como el de ese día. Típicamente hay aunque sea una brisa, el ruido de las hojas, gente cerca hablando, pájaros, etc. Este día en particular había silencio puro, era como si yo hubiera estado. No había nada, ningún tipo de sonido durante un largo rato. Fue un día muy especial.

When I saw this cabin I knew I had to paint it and yes, it had to be with all the reddish, orange bushes I'm so in love with in front of it.  This cabin used to belong to an old prospector on a small island on Ennadai Lake and it was the destination for our last full day, we had a lovely picnic on the beach, some people hiked, some people fished and kayaked and some of us painted away for the whole day. 
It was pretty warm and I ended up having to take my boots off for a while as my feet were getting cooked in those big boots. It was awesome to feel the soft cushy lichen under my feet.  One of the things that surprised me about the landscape in this part of the world was the variety of ground cover they have. Lichens, mosses and berries of so many different types!  Here are some more images of the island and  the day.

Cuando vi esta cabaña supe que la tenía que pintar. Por supuesto  que tenía que ser con todos los arbustos rojizos y naranjas que tanto me gustan. Esta cabaña solía ser de un antiguo explorador en una isla en el lago Ennadai y fue el destino de nuestro último día. Disfrutamos de un picnic hermoso en la playa, algunas personas fueron a caminar, otras a pescar, otros anduvieron en kayaks y otros pintamos todo el día. Hacía mucho calor y terminé sacándome las botas ya que mis pies estaban re cocinados en esas botas enormes. Fue hermoso sentir el colchoncito de líquen debajo de mis pies. Una de las cosas que más me sorprendió de el paisaje en esta zona del país fue la gran variedad de plantas bajas que tienen. Líquenes, musgos y fresas de tantos tipos diferentes. Acá tienen algunas otras imágenes del día y de la isla.

I think this set is my favourite of the whole 30 days and for sure from the tip to Arctic Haven. From today on, several times I tried doing things differently, something more like what I was doing in the studio at the beginning of the challenge. Remember I mentioned I was trying different croppings of the same thing? Well, that's what I did here, I knew I had enough time to do a couple of paintings so I set up 2 canvases and did them almost simultaneously. I wanted to try out different  formats, similar compositions, more of that, less of  something else. You get the picture.....

In this case I was totally fascinated (as I was for most of the trip) with the Fall colours of this landscape. We had gone to Apocalypse Island.... That name was given to the island by  a couple of our guides: when they went to the island for the fist time they liked it so much  they decided this would be a pretty good place to come and hide if there ever was an apocalypse (I hear they were talking about  a zombie invasion at the time, haha,.... anyway, ...They called the beach Paradise Island and it certainly was like paradise that day!
I wanted to try a horizontal and a square format and include some of the lake behind in one of them. So I did! I like them both, I would maybe combine elements from both in the future to make a larger piece.

Estos dos cuadros son mis favoritos de los 30 días creo y  del viaje al ártico. A partir de este momento empecé a trabajar de forma diferente y tiene que ver con cómo ya estaba pintando en el taller al comienzo del desafío. Recuerdan que les había dicho que estaba tratando de hacer distintas composiciones de la misma cosa? Bueno, eso es lo que empecé hacer acá. Como yo sabía que tenía suficiente tiempo para hacer un padre un par de cuadros, puse dos lienzos y los hice al mismo tiempo. Trataba de probar diferentes formatos, composiciones similares pero distintas,  más de esto, menos de lo otro… Se dan cuenta…
En este caso, estaba totalmente fascinada, como estuve la mayor parte del tiempo, con los colores del otoño de este paisaje. Este día habíamos ido a una isla que se llama Isla Apocalipsis, ese nombre vino de que un par de guías , se enamoraron de esta isla cuando fueron por primera vez (y  de acuerdo lo que me contaron estaban hablando de una invasión de zombies y cosas así, ja ja)  Concluyeron con que este sería el lugar ideal para esconderse si en algún momento había un apocalipsis… Llamaron a la playa a la que llegamos la playa del paraíso.  Y la verdad es que ese día fue como estar en el paraíso…
Quería probar un formato horizontal y uno cuadrado e incluir un poco de lago que había detrás en uno de ellos, y eso fue lo que hice. Me gustan los dos cuadros, tal vez  combine elementos de los dos en el futuro para hacer una pieza más grande

Back a few months ago when it was cold and miserable I bought this beautiful mini rose bush, planted in a terracota pot and put it on my patio table. It was such a hopeful splash of colour at the time! I knew I had to paint it before I cut it back so it would regain its strength. Later on in the Spring, just in the nick of time before they started loosing all the petals, I set up the easel outside by the patio table and enjoyed painting these warm colours.

This one as well as many other paintings, some from my recent painting trip to Ashcroft and previous trips to Hawaii and Mexico will be available at the 2017 TD Moss Street Paint In. I am very honoured to have been selected again this year to be a part of it. This coming Saturday July 15th, from 11 till 4, I'll be at spot #149 in between Minto and Richardson. Hope to see you there, it is a WONDERFUL event attended every year by around 30,000 people, I can guarantee you you'll find a piece of art to your liking since there is everything under the sun! Hace algunos meses cuando hacía todavía bastante frío  compré esta rosa miniatura, la planté en una maceta de terracota y la puse en la mesa del patio. Era un desparrame de color esperanza en ese momento! Sabía que tenía que pintarla antes de que  la podara para que recobrara su vigor y fue así que más adelante en la primavera, justo antes de que empezara a perder los pétalos, armé el atril en el patio y disfruté el pintar estos hermosos colores.

Este cuadro junto con muchos otros, algunos de mi viaje reciente Ashcroft o de viajes previos a Hawái y Mexico van a estar disponibles en la Pintada de Moss Street. Tengo el honor de haber sido seleccionada de nuevo este año para ser parte de este gran evento. Este sábado 15 de julio, de 11:00 a 4:00 de la tarde voy a estar en el lugar #149  entre las calles Minto y Richardson. Espero verlos ahí, es un evento maravilloso al que van alrededor de 30.000 personas todos los años, les puedo garantizar que van a encontrar  arte que les guste ya que hay tanta variedad. This is the second painting I did for my friends to choose from and in the end they couldn't choose so they took both! Thank you again Steve and Suzanne, hope you enjoy them for many years to come!
This one was somewhat of a tough one for me because I always feel that if I paint those orange, yellow, pink sunsets they look fake,  made up, borderline corny. But the truth of the matter is that this is exactly the way the sky looks sometimes! So I went into the canvas with gusto and had lots of fun with it!

Este es el segundo cuadro que hice para que mis amigos eligieran y al final no pudieron elegir uno así que se quedaron con los dos! Gracias Steve y Suzanne, espero que los disfruten por muchos años!
Este cuadro fue un poco difícil para mí porque siempre siento que si pinto uno de esos ocasos de colores naranja, amarillo, rosados, se ven como falsos, construidos, poco reales, pero la verdad es que muchas veces es exactamente así como se ve el cielo! Así que agarré los pinceles y entré al liezo con mucho gusto!

I don't know why I am having such a hard time writing on the blog.... the good thing is that I am still creating and painting, just not sharing....

This is a commission I had a while back and I am very pleased with how it turned out. Michelle is friend who has gone through quite a bit in the last while. She wanted to have some of my art in her home and chose a piece similar to this one which was sold. I had been wanting to paint it again in oils this time, the previous one was acrylics, fortunately she was very pleased with it. I helped her hang it in her home and as soon as they were up (she got 2 of my paintings :) she said "Oh , Happiness" and that's how the name for the painting came. I wish you Michelle a lot of happiness in the coming years! Thank you for choosing to have my art in your home, I am touched!

Interestingly enough, this inspiration and reference for this piece has changed dramatically, those trees are no longer there, they have been cut in order for the planned development to go ahead. I drove that road for 5 years and that sight took my breath away every time I saw it, it was the old site for Coast Collective, my old job. Gorgeous spot, I trust new trees will replace these ones and one day they will be just as beautiful!

La verdad es que no sé por qué me está costando tanto escribir en el blog… Lo bueno es que sigo creando y pintando, simplemente no estoy compartiendo…

Este es un pedido que alguien me había echo hace un tiempo y estoy muy contenta con el resultado. Michelle es una amiga que ha tenido malos momentos estos últimos tiempos. Ella quería tener un cuadro mío en su hogar y eligió uno similar a uno que yo ya había vendido. Lo bueno es que yo tenía intenciones de pintarlo de nuevo pero en óleos esta vez, el anterior era en acrílico, y por suerte, a ella le gustó mucho. La ayudé a colgarlo en su hogar y apenas terminamos, ella dijo "Oh, Qué felicidad" y así es como surgió el nombre a este cuadro.  Michelle,  te deseo mucha felicidad en los próximos años,  gracias por elegir tener mi arte en tu casa! Es un honor!

De forma interesante, la inspiración y referencia para este cuadro ha cambiado dramáticamente, esos árboles ya no están, los han cortado para comenzar con la construcción de departamentos  que estaba planeada. Yo pasé por esa calle durante cinco años ya que es la antigua ubicación de Coast Collective, mi antiguo trabajo,  y admiré y disfruté esta vista cada otoño. Es un lugar muy bello, seguro que van a plantar nuevos árboles en lugar de los viejos y algún día van hacer tan hermosos como estos.

Day 28 of 30: Clivia

My mom and dad in Argentina have a beautiful garden and they have an area that is full of agapanthus and clivias in their back yard.  I have a clivia here too but it is an indoor plant This past week it gave me a bloom which of course makes me smile and needed to be painted!
I am very pleased with lots of things in this painting...  I am not done, have to resolve quite a few things still but overall it is going in the right direction.  The light changed throughout the day in my studio (I started early in the morning, stopped at 9.30 and came back after 1 pm) and I can't keep trying to finish it in the current lighting conditions, so I will have to wait till the morning again. For now, here it goes....
At one point in the painting I had lost the drawing (well.... actually at more than one point :) so I used my kemper tool to go back into it,  redraw the shapes to see see them better and keep going. It was very useful to do this. I also use my kemper tool usually to sign my paintings by scraping paint off.

My mamá y mi papá en Argentina tienen un jardín hermoso con una zona  llena de agapantos y clivias. Yo también tengo una clivia acá pero es una planta de interior. Esta semana pasada me ha florecido lo que me puso muy contenta por supuesto!
Estoy bastante contenta con este cuadro.... no está terminado, tengo que resolver unas cuantas cosas mas pero en general va en la dirección adecuada. La luz me cambió durante el día en mi taller, (comencé temprano, paré a las 9.30 y volví despueés de la 1 de la tarde) y no puedo seguir tratando  de terminar con la luz tan diferente, voy a tener que esperar hasta mañana . Por ahora, acá va.....
En un momento había perdido las formas en el cuadro (bueno, en realidad mas de una vez!! :)  Usé mi herramienta Kemper para dibujar de nuevo las formas y rescatar el dibujo de esa forma. (Tiene puntas de goma que levantan la pintura).  Me fue muy útil hacer eso, uso esta herramienta muchas veces para firmar los cuadros levantando la pintura.

I am loving all the colours around, really enjoying Fall this year. This took me to look in my photo files from previous years and I found this one I hadn't painted. It's Goldstream Park, a great place to visit right now with the Salmon Run happening. (Every year, salmon come back to spawn to exactly the same spot in in the river they were born after being in the ocean for years, nature never ceases to amaze me!) Hopefully I get there to paint on plein-air before the next wind storm!

Estoy disfrutando intensamente los colores del otoño este año lo que me inspiró a mirar mis archivos de fotos y buscar esta foto que no había pintado. Es el el Parque Goldstream, un lugar hermoso para visitar en este momento  con los colores y la "corrida del salmón" (todos los años los salmones vuelven al mismo lugar en el río en que nacieron  que nacieron después de pasar varios años en el mar, increíble lo que es la naturaleza!). Ojalá que alcance a ir a pintar a este parque antes de la próxima tormenta de viento!

Wow! Time flies and I haven't posted for a few weeks now. I keep getting messages saying well??? Where are some new pieces??? How come you are not posting?? It is nice to be missed!!

It has been busy...  I have been devoting some time to marketing materials, like designing new business cards, new website (which I am very excited about! Not just quite yet ready to go live though) and I have been away to warmer sunnier climates!!

My husband and I spend a week in Punta Cana (no kids:)  It was a great trip where we visited with some old friends and made new ones. It was a customer appreciation trip from Wolseley, a plumbing wholesaler my husband deals with. They have organized trips like this one for the last couple of years;  last year they took us to Jamaica, this year was to Dominican Republic and next year is Cuba, hopefully we get the invite. :) Amazingly well organized, every single detail was taken care of and they always go the extra mile. Thank you Wolseley!. It was busy and didn't get to paint there but gathered LOTS of reference material; you will for sure see some "tropical" paintings soon! The colours of  the water, the sand and everything were absolutely incredible! I LOVE traveling and seeing new places and cultures!

         

This week after coming back  I worked on finishing 2 pieces that I wanted to submit for the upcoming FCA show, (Federation of Canadian Artists, a group I am an active member of). I was quite pleased with both of them but one of them sold and found a new home right away! Thank you Judy, hope you enjoy it for a long time!  The one that sold is the one in the photo above, I had shown you progress shots before. The photo is not good, but I am not home to take a better photo today and I just want to post this today! I'll post the other painting next week after I have submitted it, hopefully it makes the cut!

Wow! Cómo pasa el tiempo, hace varias semanas que no escribo en el blog y estoy recibiendo mensajes que dicen y? Cuándo nos mostrás la próxima? Es bueno ser extrañada!!

Han sido unas semanas muy ocupadas:  he estado trabajando en algunas cosas de marketing, como el diseño de nuevas tarjetas personales, nuevo sitio de internet (con el que estoy muy entusiasmada! No está listo todavía para mostrar pero le falta poco) y también he estado de viaje por tierras más calurosas y soleadas!!

Mi esposo y yo pasamos una semana en Punta Cana (sin chicos:) Fue un viaje muy lindo en el que nos visitamos con viejos amigos y conocimos nuevos. Era un viaje de apreciación al cliente ofrecido por Wolseley, uno de los distribuidores de materiales a quien mi esposo compra. Han organizado estos viajes los últimos años, el año pasado nos llevaron a Jamaica,  este año a República Dominicana y el año que viene a Cuba, ojalá que recibamos la invitación! Gracias Wolseley! Fue una semana ocupada y no pude pintar allá pero junté muchísimo material para pintar y estoy segura que van a ver algunas pinturas "tropicales" en el futuro! Los colores del agua, la arena, de todo son absolutamente increíbles! Me encanta viajar y visitar lugares y culturas nuevas.

Esta semana terminé dos cuadros que quiero presentar para adjudicación en una muestra del FCA (Federación de Artistas Canadienses, un grupo al que pertenezco). Estoy bastante contenta con los dos pero uno se vendio en el acto y encontró ya un hogar nuevo! Gracias Judy! Espero que lo disfrutes por mucho tiempo! Es el que está en la foto de arriba, yo les había mostrado una foto en progreso de este en Noviembre.   La foto de hoy no es muy buena, pero no estoy en casa hoy para sacar una mejor y quiero publicar este blog!!  Les voy a mostrar  el otro una vez que sepa el resultado para la muestra, espero que lo acepten!

I think that the goals have been set. I want to get to the 100 paintings I was talking about  and this is coming from one of a letter Robert Genn wrote a long time ago. I actually just went digging in the Painter's Keys website and found it! It was in 2004!! In it, someone starting to paint wants to get some criticism from him about her painting and  his response was "Go do another 100 and come back". I am sure I have painted more than 100 paintings in my life time but I want to do them within a certain period of time as  that when I believe you can actually develop your  work and there can be progress. (Click here to see that clickback on The Painter's Key website) I haven't quite set the time frame yet though. I would like to get it done before the end of the year but I need to be realistic as to everything else happening in my life at the moment, including a trip to Argentina in December to spend Xmas down there.  I am starting to count since June 2013 which is when I actually started painting again and I am up to 45 finished (or almost finished) pieces :) I'll start posting the ones you haven's seen yet as they were painted  before the challenge. The deadline maybe the end of January and that would be very "doable" as there is another challenge coming in Jan! I have a couple more goals that I will be sharing with you in the next few posts (which will actually happen not everyday but just a few times a week)

So here we go with number 31. I painted this the week after Liz Wiltzen's workshop and just starting with oils.

Creo que he dedicidio cuales son mis metas próximas. Quiero llegar al número 100 del que hablaba hace unos días y esta idea viene de una de las cartas  semanales que Robert Genn escribió hace mucho tiempo. Acabo de ir a su website y la encontré! Fue en el 2004!! En esta carta, una persona que está empazando a pintar quiere  que él le critique lo que había pintado y el respondió: "Andá a hacer otras 100 y volvé" Yo estoy segura que  he pintado mas de 100 piezas en mi vida pero quiero hacerlo dentro de una cantidad determinada de tiempo porque creo que asi es como uno puede desarrollar un estilo y se puede ver progreso. Sigan este link para ver esa carta en el sitio de Robert Genn que se llama La Clave del Pintor (o algo asi) No he determinado todavía cuál va a ser el límite de tiempo que me voy a poner. Me gustaría terminarlo antes de fin de año pero se que tengo que ser realista con todo el resto de cosas en mi vida, incluyendo una viaje a Argentina para Navidad. Voy a empezar a contar desde Junio de este año que es cuando empecé a pintar de nuevo y ya tengo 45 piezas terminadas (o casi terminadas) :) Voy a empezar a poner acá en el blog los que no han visto que pinté ante de comenzar el desafío. El límite sea tal vez a fines de Enero y eso sería bastante posible ya que hay otro desafío en Enero! Hay otro par de metas que voy a comparit con uds en los proximos dias. (No voy a poner cosas en el blog todos los días)

Acá vamos entonces con la número 31. La pinté la semana siguiente al curso con Liz Wiltzen y estaba empezando con óleos.
