I love working in many different sizes. I like small pieces
because I am able to finish a piece in a relatively short period of
time. They also help me figure out elements and have also become the
jumping point sometimes for bigger works. Last February I painted
several boats and as I was very happy with what happened with a few of
them, I decided to go a bit bigger and combine them into this bigger
one. You can see this painting as well as several other ones at South
Shore Gallery in Sooke. It's an 18x24 Oil on Canvas called Island Racing.

gusta trabajar en distintos tamaños. Me gustan las piezas pequeñas
porque muchas veces puedo terminar un cuadro en un periodo de tiempo
relativamente corto. También me ayudan a decidir qué hacer con distintos
elementos y muchas veces se transforman en estudios para trabajos más
grandes. Este febrero pasado, pinté varios barcos y veleros y como
estaba contenta con lo que pasó en algunos de sus cuadros decidí
combinarlos y pintar este más grande. Pueden ver este cuadro en South
Shore Gallery en Sooke. Es un óleo de 46x61cm que se llama Carreras de la Isla.

This is one was painted on a quiet afternoon on the East side of
Okanogan Lake. We don't have Scotch Pine in Victoria so I really notice
the distinctive colour of the bark and its needles. Beautiful colour! I had a wonderful time at the Moss Street Paint In last Saturday! Thank you to everyone that came, visited, commented, encouraged and/or purchased! Your support is always so appreciated!

Okanogan. No tenemos pino escocés en Victoria, asi que realmente noto

Well I think a couple of these boats will leave tomorrow, I put them in today but I don't think i like them there so I may just wipe them off tomorrow after they get the overnight rule.... which is to give it some time and come back and see it with fresh eye.

There are endless paths and trails to explore all over the place here on the West Coast. Many times, when you get to the end of the path, you get to enjoy the most beautiful views on the ocean or vistas from mountain tops. I haven't been doing those walks as much lately and I miss them. I have to make sure I schedule them in in the near future and enjoy Spring!

Acá en esta zona de la Costa Oeste, hay una gran cantidad de caminitos y senderos para explorar. Muchas veces, al llegar al final de esos senderos, se pueden disfrutar paisajes de mar hermosos. Hace mucho que no hago estas caminatas y las extraño muho. Tengo que asegurarme de hacer tiempo para hacerlas pronto y disfrutar de la primavera!

When I first came to Canada, one day my husband took me to the beach.... when we got there, all I could see were rocks, logs and very few waves.... I went..... really? Is this the beach??? Where's the sand?? and the big waves?? .... That is what I had seen so far in Argentina, Chile and Brazil.... Well, I have come to love the beaches here with the huge piles of logs brought to shore by storms and tides. There are of course some that do have the big waves and some with sandy patches and long spits..... but most are littered with rocks and white-washed logs. I also remember from that first day the noise the waves make on a pebble beach.... quite different!

Cuando vine a Canada, un día mi esposo me llevó a la playa.... cuando llegamos, lo único que había era troncos, piedras y nada de olas.... y yo dije.... Es esta la playa? Donde está la arena? y las olas?? Era a eso que yo estaba acostumbrada en playas de Argentina, Chile y Brasil..... Pero después de un timepo, encantan las playas de acá con las pilas de troncos traídos por tormentas y mareas. Hay por supuesto algunas que tienen olas grandes y otras con largas playas de arena, pero la mayoría estan llenas de troncos y piedritas. También me acuerdo de ese primer día el ruido que hacen las olas cuando rompen sobre las piedras..... muy diferente!!
Well..... a few storms passed through this painting (haha!) and I'm not sure this one will stay here long but I'm running out of time today and wanted to post today's painting... I have changed the clouds and other elements several times, there are some things I really love about it, some of the colours in the clouds and the thickness of the paint but I'm not sure all the shapes really work so again..... I'll let it rest and see it tomorrow with fresh eyes. Of course, I'm always open to comments!

Bueno, han pasado varias tormentas por este cuadro (jaja!) y no estoy segura si esta se queda o se va pero me estoy quedando sin tiempo y quiero publicar el trabajo de hoy.... He cambiado esas nubes y otros elementos varias veces, hay algunas cosas que me encantan como algunos de los colores en lasnubes o el textura de la pintura pero no estoy segura de que todas las formas que tengo así que como siempre, voy a descansar y mirar todo con ojos frescos mañana. Como siempre, se aceptancomentarios!
When we go for several days or weeks at a time on the sailboat, we typically go from one anchorage to the next one, we may stay on the same spot for several days depending on how exploring there is to do in each place. From far away, it seems that there's not much to see but once you start getting closer to shore you discover there are all sorts of protected coves everywhere, like behind small islands that can only be found once you are closer to them. Of course it can all be seen on the charts, we have wonderful navigation systems now both on the boat as well as Ipads and phones but in the olden days.... that is just 10 years ago for us, haha, it was all with just paper charts which I loved!

Cuando vamos en el velero durante días o semanas normalmente vamos de un anclaje al otro, tal vez nos quedamos en el mismo lugar varios días dependiendo de todo lo que haya para explorar en ese lugar. Desde lejos, muchas veces parece que no hay mucho para ver y visitar pero una vez que nos acercamos a la costa descubrimos muchas ensenadas protegidas, detrás de islotes por ejemplo. Por supuesto que se pueden ver ver en los mapas, tenemos ahora sistemas de navegación maravillosos en el velero como así también en nuestros iPad y teléfonos pero en los viejos días… hace sólo unos unos 10 años para nosotros, era todo con cartas de navegación de papel que me encantaban!
I had the privilege of being in a group of artists that went into Echo
Canyon in High Bar on the Fraser River last May. Our host Wayne Larsen from Big Bar
Lake drove us though mountains and gorgeous views to this spot that was
quite something. How do you put it all onto canvas?? How do you convey
the size and scale of what you have in front of you?? The vastness of the
terrain and the size of the canyon itself made it very difficult
to paint the whole thing so instead of trying to fit it all, which is
quite impossible by the way, I chose to zone into one particular area,
the one that had the most contrast and decided to turn the day into an
exercise. I was determined to study each shape with its colours and
values without being too concerned about the finished painting. Through
the whole painting I just kept saying to myself: "It' just shapes, it's
just shapes, what colour is it?". At the end of the day I wasn't too
impressed by my painting but really liked the strokes and how much I had
leanrt by just looking and recording. Now, when I look at the painting I
am actually pretty happy with it.

Este Mayo pasado tuve el privilegio de ser parte de un grupo de artistas que fue al Cañón Eco en High Bar en el Río Fraser. Nuestro anfitrión Wayne Larsen del Lago Big Bar no llevó a través de montañas y paisajes hermosísimos a este lugar tan especial. Como hace uno para poner todo eso sobre el lienzo? Como uno transmite el tamaño y la escala de lo que tiene al frente? La grandeza del terreno y el tamaño del cañón mismo hacían muy difícil poder pintarlo entero por lo me concentré en pintar una zona en particular, la zona que tenía más contraste. Decidí transformar todo el día en un ejercicio. Estaba determinada en estudiar cada forma con sus colores y valores sin preocuparme mucho por el cuadro final. Durante todo el cuadro simplemente me dije a mí misma: "Son solamente formas, son solamente formas, de qué color son?" Al final del día no estaba muy satisfecha con el cuadro pero realmente me habían gustado las pinceladas y todo lo que había aprendido simplemente mirando y grabando lo que tenía al frente. Ahora, cuando miro el cuadro de nuevo, estoy bastante contenta con cómo quedó.

Y finalmente les muestro este vídeo maravilloso que me trae tantos recuerdos… Jill Philipchuck sacó fotos durante todos los días que estuvimos en Big Bar. Después ella puso todas esas fotos en este vídeo, muchísimas gracias Jill!!! Wayne y Janine fueron anfitriones excelentes, Janine cocinó y nos mantuvo tan bien alimentados. Estamos tan agradecidas de que nos hayan invitado este año de nuevo. Hasta el año que viene!!
When you go painting plein air with other people you have to adapt yourself to what the majority of the group is doing, that goes for anything & everything actually, doesn't it?..... I had already finished my painting and had some time left before the others finished theirs but I didn't have so much time to start a bigger one. So I decided to play with the shapes and colours of the sage bushes right in front of me and use the paint that was actually on the palette leftover from the previous painting. It was ok.....but nothing to write home about. Last week as I was finishing other work, I took another go at it and I am quite happy with it now.

Cuando uno va a pintar afuera con otra gente hay que adaptarse a lo que la mayoría del grupo está haciendo, esto, la verdad, se aplica a todo no?… Yo ya había terminado mi cuadro y tenía un poco de tiempo antes de que los otros terminaran sus cuadros pero no tenía tanto tiempo como para empezar y desarrollar un cuadro mas grande o mas complicado. Por eso decidí jugar con los colores y formas de los arbustos de salvia que tenía al frente mío y simplemente usar un poco de la pintura que me había quedado en la paleta del cuadro anterior. Estaba más o menos bien… pero nada especial. Esta semana pasada mientras terminaba otros trabajos, le agregué algunas cosas, cambié otras, saqué elementos y ahora estoy mas contenta con cómo ha quedado.
Still sharing Ashcroft
paintings..... For the weekend of the paint-out, which has been
happenning for the last few years at the end of May, it is truly
wonderful to see how the community opens their doors for us painters to
invade their hometown and create. They help with set up, everybody is
friendly and lots come out to the show on the last day. Sundance Ranch
is one of the many ranches in the area just outside the city and it is
where we painted on Sunday morning. We are so thankful they allowed us
painters to go onto their property, we had a great time!

Todavía les sigo mostrando cuadros de Ashcroft.... Para el fin de semana de la pintada que se organiza el último fin de semana en Mayo de cada año es realmente maravilloso ver cómo la comunidad abre las puertas a los pintores que invaden su pueblo para crear. Ayudan con la organización, todos muestran mucha amabilidad y muchos vienen a la muestra del último día. La Estancia Sundance está apenas en las afueras de la ciudad y es donde pintamos el domingo a la mañana. Estamos tan agradecidas de que los dueños nos hayan permitido pintar en su propiedad, la pasamos tan bien!
By the time I did this painting last May we had been painting for a few days and I was really enjoying the colours and shapes of the landscape so I was more comfortable going a bit bigger en plein air. We found these lovely vistas of Ashcroft and the valley from a side road. It was a VERY hot afternoon and the only way for me to be able to paint was to be in the shade. Thankfully we had taken a gazebo/tent and we made very good use of it. It was 4 of us under it trying to stay out of the sun, I wouldn't have been able to do it otherwise!!

Cuando hice este cuadro este Mayo pasado ya hacía varios días que estabamos pintando y
yo estaba disfrutando mucho de los colores y formas del paisaje, por
eso probé de hacer un cuadro mas grande al aire libre. Habíamos encontrado este lugar en una calle en la montaña que tenía vistas del valle y la ciudad de Ashcroft. Hacía MUCHO calor
ese día y para mi estar en la sombra era la única forma. Por suerte
habíamos llevado un gazebo y lo usamos mucho! Eramos 4 abajo
escondiendonos del sol, yo no podría haber estado todo el día al sol sin
eso!
A few years ago I went on my first plein air painting trip to Gabriola Island with a group of artists. I clearly had a great time as I haven't stopped and have continued planning and going to different places. I mean, I love traveling, I love painting so why not combine them both? We had such a good time, lots of laughs and chats..... I have the best memories from this trip including a few photos of one of the sunsets there which I used for this painting. I had left these posts ready before leaving Victoria and this is the last painting that I had ready before starting to show you the ones I am doing right now in Yellowknife, I am having a great time! It's cloudy tonight so we have to wait to see the Northern Lights but I am sure we will have a chance.

Hace unos años fui a mi primer viaje de pintura a la Isla Gabriola con un grupo de artistas. Parece que me gustó mucho ya que no paré y he seguido yendo a distintos lugares..... Me encanta viajar, me encanta pintar, por qué no combinar las dos cosas??? La pasamos tan bien en ese viaje, muchas risas y charlas... Tengo los mejores recuerdos de este viaje incluyendo algunas fotos de uno de los atardeceres que usé como referencia para este cuadro. Había dejado todos estos blogs listos antes de salir de Victoria y este es el último cuadro antes de empezar con los que estoy haciendo en Yellowknife, la estoy pasando muy muy bien! Esta noche está nublado así que tenemos que esperar para ver la Aurora Borealis, estoy segura que no va a faltar oportunidad!
One day last week we went on the sailboat for the afternoon with 2 friends we have known for a long time. We love sharing our boat and show people our favourite spots. Before dinner while the men went fishing for a while, my friend Karalyn and myself went for a paddle on the kayaks and this was one of the views. It's absolutely fascinating to see the different rock formations, so different from area to area!
Just before we saw this lonely tree at the point we saw a raccoon looking at us from a log ont he beach, we took some photos and then kept on paddling for a little bit. We thought the racoon was looking for dinner and as soon as we weren't looking he jumped int he water and started swimming! He totally swam from island to another..... I didn't know they could swim so well!

Un día de la semana pasada fuimos en el velero con un par de amigos que
hace mucho no veíamos! Nos encanta compartir nuestro velero y nuestros
lugares favoritos. Antes de cenar, mientras los hombres fueron a pescar
un rato, mi amiga Karalyn y yo fuimos ne los kayaks alrededor de varias
islas pequeñas que estaban cerca. y esta era una de las vistas. Es
totalmente fascinante observar las distintas formaciones en las rocas,
son tan diferentes de una zona a la otra!
Justo antes de ver este solitario árbol vimos este mapache mirándonos
desde un tronco en la playa, le sacamos unas fotos y seguimos. Pensábamos
que estaba buscando la cena pero apenas nos dimos vuelta se tiró al
agua y empezó a nadar a la isla del frente! Yo no sabía que podían nadar
tan bien!

This image is inspired by the last trip up to Desolation Sound a few weeks ago. As everything was covered by a blanket of smoke from the wild fires, the skies were very very grey and flat. I actually took the liberty of adding a bit of texture to the sky as in reality it was just one tone with nothing...... As I painted this I was thinking how interesting it is to think how long some of those trees have been around...... they withstand heat, cold, wind storms and winters and somehow they are still there.....
I started painting for the challenge a few days before Sep 1 so I would be able to have work done for my traveling days. Last night we left Victoria on our way to our Arctic adventure. As this is published, I am in Yellowknife, painting my life away.

Esta imagen fue inspirada por el último viaje a Desolation Sound hace una semanas. Como todo estaba cubierto por una gran capa de humo producido por los incendios forestales, los cielos estaban muy muy grises. En realidad me tomé la libertad de agregar un poco de textura en el cielo para agregar interés. Mientras pintaba esto, pensaba que es interesante pensar cuanto tiempo que hace que algunos de esos árboles están ahí… Aguantando calor,frío, tormentas de viento, inviernos y sequías y de alguna forma todavía sobreviven… Comencé a pintar para el desafío unas días antes del 1 de septiembre para poder tener trabajo listo para los días de viaje. Anoche salimos de Victoria camino a nuestra aventura en el Artico. Cuando uds. lean esto voy a estar en Yellowknife pintando a loco!
A few weeks ago I went to see a Monet exhibit at the Vancouver Art Gallery called Secret Garden. I loved seeing his work up close and personal but what I rescued more than anything from being in front of his paintings in person was seeing how much he painted the same thing over and over again. He studied the same subject in different light, at different times of the day, you can tell he was experimenting in how to make things work.....
That, as well as an app which I will tell you in a different post after the challenge, inspired me to do something like that.... This painting came from a cropping of another painting of mine. I started by doing a small study of it to see if the composition worked. Moving on to bigger canvas next.... Yay.... day 1 is done!!!

Hace unas semanas fui a la muestra "Jardín Secreto" de Monet en Galería de Arte de Vancouver. Me encantó ver su trabajo de cerca en persona pero lo que mas que nada rescato de la experiencia fue ver cómo él pintaba lo mismo todo el tiempo, repetía sus cuadros y temas en distinta luz, en diferentes momentos del día, en distintas condiciones de clima.... se puede ver que él estaba experimentando para lograr expresarse mejor sobre el lienzo. .... Eso, además de una app en el ipad que les voy mostrar después que termine el desafío, fue mi inspiración para pintar siguiendo esos parámetros. Este cuadro salió de uno anterior que yo había echo. Comencé con un estudio pequeño con una composición diferente del original. El próximo será más grande..... que suerte que el primer día ya está!!!!!

Otro cuadro pequeño que fue resultado del fin de semana en el velero hace unas semanas. Esta es una escena muy típica aquí en la Costa Oeste. Tengo tanta suerte y estoy tan agradecida de vivir en un ougar tan ermoso donde hay inspiración por todos lados! Estoy contenta de que se haya vendido en el tour de Talleres, espero que lo disfrutes por mucho tiempo Debra!
We are going to Princess Louisa Inlet with today's painting. I started this one back at the end of June but it still needed a few touches in the studio. Such a beautiful place..... The mountains are so high and the water so deep that we were anchored and "Stern Tied" (Tied the back of the boat to shore so we don't swing) and the back of the boat was 20 feet from shore with 40 feet of water still under us. That is one of the neat things up in that area. It takes a while to get all the way this Inlet but it is well worth it! The light was disappearing quickly, most of the bay was in shade because of the height of the mountains and the last rays of sun were just highlighting the tops of the ridges with a very bright green. The photo below is when I was already finished (because of not enough light!). You can see my improvised studio on the bow of the boat :) I'd go back there in a heartbeat!

Con el cuadro de hoy vamos a la Bahía de la Princess Louisa.
Lo empecé a fines de Junio pero todavía le faltaban algunos toques en
el taller. Qué hermoso lugar… Las montañas son tan altas y el agua tan
profunda que una vez anclados y la popa atada a la costa para no girar
sobre el ancla, el velero estaba a 5 o 6 metros de tierra con 12 metros
de agua todavía abajo del velero. Esta es una de las cosas lindas en
esta zona, se puede llegar muy cerca de la costa con grandes
profundidades. Se tarda bastante en llegar a esta hasta esta bahía pero
realmente vale la pena. La luz estaba desapareciendo muy rápido, la
mayor parte de la bahía estaba en la sombra debido a la altura de las
montañas y los últimos rayos de sol hacían resaltar el verde en las
montañas. Pueden ver mi taller improvisado en la proa del velero. Me
gustaría volver a visitar este lugar!!
We are going back to the Big Bar Lake area today.... It was painted from the same field as "Afternoon at the Lake". What was interesting (and challenging with this painting was that the sun was coming in and out all the time and it was lighting up different areas of the lake at different times so the patterns on the water were changing ALL THE TIME and every five minutes so it seemed.... The colours were incredible in that lake, from very light turquoise to very dark greens. It was a fun day painting with some good friends! The bugs were interesting too! At one point I had one that, poor thing, landed on the oil paint and made a big path on the panel trying to get out. :( There were quite a few others that ended up adding extra texture to the painting!

Hoy volvemos a la zona del Lago Big Bar … Este cuadro lo pinté desde el mismo campito que "Tarde en el Lago. Lo que fue interesante (y difícil) con este cuadro era que el sol estaba entrando y saliendo todo el tiempo e iluminaba distintas partes del lago en distintos momentos haciendo así que los diseños en el agua cambiaran todo el tiempo y cada cinco minutos. Los colores eran increíbles en ese lago, desde un turquesa muy clarito a verdes muy oscuros.... Fue un día muy bueno compartido con buenos amigos! Los bichos también estaban interesantes! En un punto hubo uno que aterrizó en el óleo y, pobrecito, tratando de salirse hizo todo un camino sobre el panel. :( Hubo otros cuantos que terminaron agregando mas textura al cuadro!
