By the time I did this painting last May we had been painting for a few days and I was really enjoying the colours and shapes of the landscape so I was more comfortable going a bit bigger en plein air. We found these lovely vistas of Ashcroft and the valley from a side road. It was a VERY hot afternoon and the only way for me to be able to paint was to be in the shade. Thankfully we had taken a gazebo/tent and we made very good use of it. It was 4 of us under it trying to stay out of the sun, I wouldn't have been able to do it otherwise!!

Cuando hice este cuadro este Mayo pasado ya hacía varios días que estabamos pintando y yo estaba disfrutando mucho de los colores y formas del paisaje, por eso probé de hacer un cuadro mas grande al aire libre. Habíamos encontrado este lugar en una calle en la montaña que tenía vistas del valle y la ciudad de Ashcroft.  Hacía MUCHO calor ese día y para mi estar en la sombra era la única forma. Por suerte habíamos llevado un gazebo y lo usamos mucho! Eramos 4 abajo escondiendonos del sol, yo no podría haber estado todo el día al sol sin eso!

This is the second painting I did that Friday a couple of weeks ago at Saxe Point, I had some time left, not enough to get engaged in a larger piece but enough to roughly sketch something. As always, there are so many paintings to be painted in each location, I just moved my easel and I had something completely different, different light, different palette. I like how this one came together,  specially the  softness of the fog bank. I finished it in the studio where I added some touches of light.

Este es el segundo cuadro que pinté hace un par de semanas en Saxe Point. Tenía un poco de tiempo, no lo suficiente para empezar uno grande pero si para bosquejar algo. Como siempre, hay tantos cuadros para pintar en cada lugar! Simplemente moví mi atril un poco y estaba mirando a un cuadro completamente  diferente, diferentes colores, diferente luz. Me gusta cómo quedó este, especialmente la niebla. Lo terminé una vez de vuelta en el taller donde le agregué un par de luces.

We left Laura Cove and went to Cortes Island where I had all the intention of painting but didn't get to it unfortunately. We went for walks and a swim in the lake, had a visit with a family we know in one of the cabins on the point at Manson's Landing and enjoyed ourselves.  How very often time flies by and I don't get to do all the things I want to! The same thing ended up happening for the next couple of days. We headed to Campbell River after that to drop off our guests as they couldn't stay for the whole time us. It ended up being the perfect recipe, one week with guests and one week just our family. Saw the fireworks for July 1 there (Independance Day in Canada) and they were great! Our next stop was Lund again after some rough seas which were uncomfortable for me more than anything else (the captain was in his glory though) We then headed south towards Jervis Inlet. 

I painted this on the way to Jervis Inlet which is on the mainland across from Texada Island, sort of half way down. I had the time to paint and even though the scenery was much the same as what I had painted while going up, I decided to do it again. In this case I let lots of the orange underpainting peeking through and was interested in portraying the different temperatures and values in the mountain ranges.... It was fun to paint even I know it is not a masterpiece :)

Dejamos Laura Cove y fuimos a la Isla Cortés donde tenía todas las intenciones de pintar pero no pude al final. Fuimos a caminar y a nadar en un lago, nos visitamos con una familia que tiene una cabaña en el la bahía Manson's Landing y la pasamos bien. Tantas veces el tiempo vuela y no llego a hacer todo lo que tengo planeado!  Lo mismo ocurrió los dos días siguientes. Fuimos hacia Campbell River a dejar a nuestros invitados  ya que ellos no podían estar con nosotros las dos semanas completas. Terminó siendo la receta justa, una semana con invitados y una semana la familia sola. Vimos los fuegos artificiales para el 1 de Julio (el día de la independencia en Canadá) que estuvieron muy lindos. Nuestra próxima parada fue Lund de nuevo después de tener mares medios picados que fueron más que nada incómodos para mi (el capitán estaba en su gloria). De ahí nos fuimos hacia el sur para Jervis Inlet.

Pinté este cuadro mientras íbamos hacia Jervis Inlet que está en el continente al frente de la isla Texada, casi a la mitad de Texada. Tenía tiempo suficiente para pintar y aunque el paisaje era similar a lo que había echo en el primer cuadro, decidí hacerlo de nuevo. En este caso, dejé bastante del naranja de base a la vista y me interesaba mostrar las distintas temperaturas de color y los valores diferentes en las cadenas de montañas que nos da un poco la perspectiva.... Y si bien no es una obra maestra  fue divertido pintarla :)
