I had done this as a plein air study many many years ago; it sold but the image always stayed with me, so I dug up a photo of the sketch  and did it again in juicy oils this time. This spot is a very protected cove in the Sechelt Peninsula where we once or twice we have spent the night on our way up to Desolation Sound. History says that possibly the cove got that name when more than a hundred years ago it was used by a man who used to smuggle Chinese people into the United States for a fee of 100 dollars, that must have been a lot of money back then!

Había pintado este cuadro desde el velero hace muchos muchos años que por suerte se había vendido pero siempre recuerdo esta imagen.  Por eso decidí buscar una foto de ese antiguo bosquejo y decidí pintarlo en óleos esta vez. Este lugar en una ensenada muy protegida en la Peninsula de Sechelt donde una o dos veces hemos pasado la noche camino a Desolation Sound. La historia dice que posiblemente la ensenada recibió este nombre después de ser usada por un señor que se dedicaba a entrar a EEUU gente de China de contrabando  por la suma de 100 dólares, eso debe haber sido mucha plata en a quel entonces!

This is a very familiar sight for us living in the Pacific Northwest.... I didn't grow up by the ocean, my hometown of Cordoba is actually around 1000 km either way to the Pacific or the Atlantic. While the hills and farmland typical of my area are gorgeous, I never get tired of the ocean sights, just love  them!

Esta es una vista muy familiar para los que vivimos en el Pacifico del NorOeste.... No crecí cerca del mar, mi ciudad natal de Córdoba está a unos 1000km del mar  ya sea hacia el Pacifico o hacia el Atlántico. Si bien las montañas y tierras de cultivo de mi zona tienen su gran atractivo y son hermosas, no me canso de las vistas de mar, me encantan!!

I started this painting with the idea of doing a loose sky and  play with the palette knife and while I did start with the knife, I soon abandoned it in favour of the large bushes. I may need to clean it up a bit but I am done with it for now as I am just wrecking things instead of improving anything. So, off to the observation rack it goes!

Comencé este cuadrito con la intencion de hacer un cielo con la cuchilla y sí empecé usandola pero enseguida la abandoné para seguir con pinceles. Tal vez tenga que cambiar algunas cosas pero pr ahora he terrminado ya que en lugar de mejorar, lo empeoro asi es que pasa al estante en observación!

I have wanted to learn how to paint with a palette knife now for a while so I decided to try for a bit with this painting. I was having lots of fun with it but I wasn't getting the look I wanted at all so in the end I wiped it off and grabbed the brushes and this came out. It ended up with a much higher key painting than I normally do. Will try the palette knife again.....

Hace rato que quiero aprender a pintar con espátula y por eso decidí probar. Me estaba divirtiendo mucho pero no estaba logrando el resultado que quería por lo que levanté toda la pintura  y comencé de nuevo pero con pinceles. Terminé con un cuadro que es mucho mas claro de lo que normalmente hago. Voy a probar con la espátula de nuevo en cualquier momento!

Start of the Season

This year we did our first sailing trip quite early in the season, Easter weekend. It was a very relaxing time in which I got to do a fair bit of painting. This one is in Todd Inlet, just outside the famous Butchart Gardens. Even though the wind was blowing outside, inside the protected cove it was so still there was a perfect mirror reflection during the evening.

 

Este año comenzamos la temporada de navegación bastante temprana, el fin de semana de Pascua. Fue un fin de semana muy tranquilo en el que pude pintar bastante. Éste cuadro es Todd Inlet, justo afuera de los famosos Butchart Gardens.  Había bastante viento afuera de estar bahía tan resguardada pero aquí adentro estaba tan calmo que el reflejp era como un espejo ese anochecer.

This is one of my favourite paintings from the Hawaii series. The ocean was quite choppy that day and I was playing with the colours more than anything when at the very end a sailboat showed up and I just had to put it in! Hope you like it!

Este es uno de los cuadros que mas me gusta de la serie de Hawaii. El ar estaba bastanate picado ese día, yo estaba mas que nada jugando con los colores cuando a último momento un velero apareció en escena y lo tuve que incluir! Espero que les guste!

Back in December I did a commission of a similar painting to this one. I actually did a couple of different options for my client to choose from and this is the one they didn't pick, interestingly enough I prefered this one! I love trying to recreate on canvas what looks like complete chaos and action happening at the start line of a sailing race. When you are looking from shore, all the boats are zigzagging back and forth and it looks like they are going to hit each other any time. I am very much a fair weather sailor, have never been on a racing boat so I don't know if it looks as chaotic from the boats as it does from the shore!

This painting along with 27 other ones is on display at the Burning Desire Show up at the Cowichan Performing Arts Centre in Duncan until  March 2. En Diciembre, tuve un pedido de un cuadro muy similar a este. En realidad hice 2 para que mis clientes pudieran elegir el que preferían y este es el que no eligieron, es interesante que yo prefiero este!  Me encanta tratar de recrear en lienzo lo que parece mucha acción y caos total al comienzo de una regata. Cuando uno está en la costa mirando a todos los veleros que están zigzageando parece que se chocan en cualquier momento y que se pasan tan cerca. Yo soy "marinera de buen tiempo",  no he estado nunca arriba de un velero que está en carrera y por eso no sé si se ve tan caótico desde el velero como se vé desde la costa!

Este cuadro, junto con otros 27 está en exhibición en el muestra "Deseo Ardiente" en el Centro de Teatro en  Duncan hasta el 2 de Marzo. Mandenme un mensaje si tienen plaeado ir a ver la mustra y les puedo dar los horarios que está abierta o vayan a mi sitio de internet donde he marcado los horarios.

Wow, I certainly took a holiday from blogging didn't I? I was happy painting my life away and all of a sudden I realized Xmas was in one week and I hadn't done much to get ready for it other than taken out decorations for painting! (Well.... I had put them  up after I painted them!) Anyway, I got really busy with my birthday, my daughter home and the season itself. The little time left I had was for painting and drawing but never got to posting anything  here. I have certainly enjoyed (and still am) my daughter being home from university!

I had to save "Start Line" from posting as it was a commission  to be a Xmas present for someone . Now that Xmas has passed, I can go ahead and publish it. A couple of years ago I did several paintings from images I had taken at a local yearly sailing race here in Victoria called Swiftsure. I had sold the paintings, (see here and here) and when this person contacted me for one of them, I just painted another one!  She loved it, hope hubby did too! :)



On a different note, I am very exctied to have singed uop for the 30 day Painting challenge coming up Jan 1. Leslie Saeta hosts this challenge every year and this is going to be my 5th one. I have done 3 full ones, one half one from the hospital last Jan and I am eager to get going with this one. I am going to focus (I think) on flowers and gardens but I will give myself the freedok to either change things up if they are not working or if I get inspired to go in a different direction. If you are an artist, I highly encourage you  to do it as there is tremendous growth that happens when you do things consistenly for a perdiod of time. I have certainly seen gowth in myself! Wow!  Me tomé vacaciones del blog no? Estaba muy contenta pintando la vida y de repente me di cuenta que la navidad era la semana siguiente y no había echo nada mas que sacar algunas decoracions para pintarlas! (bueno.... si había decorado un poco la casa)  La cosa es que me ocupé mucho con mi cumpleaños, mi hija en casa y los preparativos navideños. El poco tiempo libre que me quedaba lo usé para pintar y dibujar y no para escribir acá. Les muestro mas adelante lo que pinté en esos días!

Tuve que esperar para mostrarles este cuadro ya que era un pedido para regalo de navidad y ahora que la Navidad ya ha pasado lo puedo publicar. Hace un par de años hice algunos cuadros de imágenes tomadas al comienzo de una carrera de veleros acá en Victoria que se llama Swifsure. Una clienta me contactó porque quería uno y como ya los había vendido, (veanlos acá y acá)  pinté otro. Le gustó mucho por suerte, espero que le haya gustado al esposo también! :)
   

Hablando de otro tema, estoy entusiasmada con haberme anotado para hacer otro Desafío de 30 Cuadros en 30 Días que empieza el 1 de Enero. Leslie Saeta lo organiza todos los enero y septiembre  y este va a  ser mi quinto. He echo 3 completos y uno a medias desde el hospital el año pasado y estoy ansiosa porque comience este. Voy a enforcarme en pintar flores y jardines pero con la libertad de cambiar rumbo si quiero. Si sos artista, te recomiendo hacerlo ya que yo he visto crecimento increíble cuando uno hace algo de forma consistente durante un período de tiempo.  Ciertamente yo he crecido mucho como artista con los anteriores! Vayan a anotarse en el link anterior. This is the third painting that is part of the "Visions of Victoria" show at St. Ann's Academy. It is actually a study for a larger painting possibly and I say possibly because usually once I do a painting I loose interest to do it again. We will see..... It's an image from our Inner Harbour in Downtown Victoria. Our old boat was the whitish sailboat in it, "Meadowlark", a 33 foot Gibsea. The Inner Harbour is always a very busy place, full of jugglers, street artists and tourists. Great for people watching!

Este es el tercer cuadro que forma parte de la muestra "Visiones de Victoria" en la Academia St. Ann. Es tal vez un estudio para un cuadro más grande. Digo tal vez porque normalmente una vez que hago un cuadro, pierdo el interés por hacerlo de nuevo. Veremos esta vez..... Es una imagen del Puerto Interno en el centro de Victoria. La embarcación blanca es nuestro viejo velero, "Meadowlark", un Gibsea de 33 pies que lo habíamos traído por esa noche. El Puerto Interno es siempre un gran lugar para disfrutar malabaristas, artistas en la calle, turistas y en general bárbaro para simplemente sentarse y mirar a la gente!

Rebecca Spit

Well....  this one is an oldie but I still like it! It is a large painting I did a few years ago from a photo taken in one of our trips to Desolation Sound. Rebecca Spit is on one the most beautiful places on Quadra Island! Ive been there 3 times and every time I go, I can't help myself and take as many photos as the first time I was there. In this particular shot, we were anchored in the bay for a couple of very enjoyable days.
Painting time has not been great this week, holiday last Monday, a couple of meetings, errands  and the Olympics that seem to have trapped me. I admire these kid's dedication, tenacity and discipline so much, they are inspiring! Go Canada!
BUT it is not all idle time in front of the TV, I have taken the opportunity to be working on some of the marketing things on my list. Been fussing with the look of the blog, adding things I have seen on other blogs that I liked (Or in some cases trying to as these things are complicated sometimes!), playing with the colour scheme and all that kind of "fun" and necessary stuff. What do you think of the banner at the top of the blog?
I have also taken some work to be displayed at Coast Collective and this morning I took some pieces to Equinox Health Clinic, a massage therapy clinic on Fort Street. Hope Lysanne (wonderful therapist!)  and her clients enjoy my work there for the next couple of months. :)

I also made some dinner tonight, (well.... I do make dinner other nights too) but sort of explaining why I didn't get to paint today :(   Now going for a run! :)

Esta es una pintura vieja pero todavia me gusta! Es un cuadro bastante grande que pinté hace unos años de una foto sacada en uno de nuestros viajes a Desolation Sound. La Peninsula Rebecca es uno de los lugares mas hermosos en la Isla Quadra! He visitado ese lugar 3 veces y  cada vez que voy ahi, vuelvo a sacar la misma inmensa cantidad fotos que la vez anterior. En esta toma, estabamos anclados en la bahía durante un par de dias que disfrutamos mucho.
Esta semana no he pintado mucho lamentablemente. Fue feriado el lunes, tuve reuniones y cosas que hacer y las Olimpíadas que me han atrapado. Admiro tanto a la dedicacion, tenacidad y disciplina de estos atletas! Vamos Canada! Pero todo esto no signica que he estado sentada ociosamente  todo el tiempo en frente del televisor, he aprovechado esta oportunidad para  hacer algunas de las cosas en mi lista de marketing. He estado jugando con este blog, cambiando el banner de arriba (que les parece?), agregando cosas que veo en otros blogs que me gustan, eligiendo los colores a usar y todo ese tipo de cosas que hay que hacer.
Tambien llevé cuadros a Coast Collective y esta manana llevé cuadros a la Clinica Equinox, una clinica de masajes en el centro. Espero que Lysanne (excelente terapista)  y sus pacientes disfruten de mi arte. :)
También preparé la cena ( bueno..... hago la cena otras noches también) pero estoy tratando de  explicar por que no pude pintar hoy! :(   y ahora me voy a correr! :)

Maiden Voyage and goals (#71 of 100)

I needed a break after the 30 days which doesn't necessarily mean I have not been in the studio! I actually have been here pretty much everyday, thinking, regrouping, tidying up!  But yesterday was actually the first day I painted art. I came back on Monday to start selecting the work that is 100% finished and I am happy with and separated it from work that either needs to be finished, adjusted, burnt? Who knows! I started getting the "selected" ones ready for showing or to go to their new homes, painted the edges of the canvas and got them off the wall. I decided that I would put up on the wall the work that needs TLC or finishing. I have this big pile of unfinished work that will get a serious look in the next coming months.... The idea is that if they are out and about I can keep them in my radar and get them done one by one. (Or disposed of)  And it has already happened. I totally got inspired to finish a landscape I started en plein air a couple of years ago after seeing someone's blog. I wouldn't have connected it to that particular painting had it not been out in plain sight. I will attack it in the next few days. 

I have set some goals and finishing is one of them. I also want to continue to do 1 to 2 small works per week and then develop larger pieces. This will all help me get to the 100 paintings that I had set as a goal after last September. This one today puts me at 71 of 100 (starting to count since last June). 

I started Maiden Voyage during the challenge, number 26 of 30, go back there to read the story behind it if you have time and haven't seen it. I am pretty pleased with it.  I could continue to correct, add and take out for a long time but this is as far as I want to go with it. Hope you like it!

(The sun is shining in my studio while I write this and I am loving it! It was -6 this morning when I drove the kids to school!!! Was it me saying spring is here just a few days ago while I painted flowers??????)

Necesitaba tomarme unos días después de los 30 días aunque esto no quiera decir que no haya estado en el taller. He estado acá todos los días, pensando, reagrupando, ordenando!! Ayer fue el primer día que pinté arte. Volví el lunes y empecé una buena clasificación de las piezas que están 100% terminadas y me gustan. Separé esas de las que necesitan un poco más de trabajo, correcciones (o hay que quemarlas??) quien sabe! Empecé el proceso de terminar las "seleccionadas" para que estén listas para exhibir o para que se vayan a su nuevo hogar. Pinté los bordes de los lienzos y las saqué de la pared. Decidí colgar en esa pared piezas que necesitan un poco de cariño y trabajo. Tengo una pila grande de trabajos sin terminar que en los próximos meses van a ser terminadas o descartadas....la idea es que si las tengo a la vista, están en mi radar todo el tiempo y las puedo terminar una por una. Y ya pasó. Despues de leer un blog de otro artista me vino la inspiración para terminar un paisaje que empecé hace un par de años en  plein air. no hubiera echo la confección con ese paisaje si no hubiera estado a la vista. Me he puesto varias metas para este año y terminar piezas empreñadas es una de ellas. También quiero pintar por semana 1 o 2 cuadros chiquitos como los del desafío y quiero también empezar piezas más grandes. De esta manera voy a poder llegar a los 100 cuadros que me había propuesto después del desafío en septiembre pasado. Con la de hoy, estoy en 71 de 100. (Empezando a contar desde Junio del año pasado).

Había empezado Viaje Inaugural durante el desafío, la número 26 de 30, vuelvan ahí para ver la historia de este cuadro so les interesa y tienen tiempo. Estoy bastante satisfecha con lo que hice. Podría seguir corrigiendo, agregando, sacando durante mucho tiempo pero es hasta acá a donde quiero llegar. Espero que les guste! 

(El sol está brillando en mi taller mientras escribo esto y me encanta! Hoy hacía 6 grados bajo cero cuando llevé los chicos a las escuela!!!! Era yo la que decía que la primavera ya llegaba hace unos días mientra pintaba flores???????)

#26 of 30: Maiden Voyage (in progress)

Well.... I thought I could do a quickish rendition of this and I am heading in a good direction but I think I need to call it a day as I am starting to get sloppy. The reason for this today is that it is my husband's birthday and one of his greatest passions in life is sailing. So I thought I would try and do a study for a larger painting for him. Last year we bought a new boat and this is a shot of us bringing the boat from Vancouver to Victoria. We are just heading out in this photo with the north Shore Mountains behind us. The sky got really dark at one point and the water turned a beautiful green/blue colour (but there was no storm :)  I spent a lot of time on the drawing today, making sure I got the right perspective and proportions of everything and I would say it reads pretty well. BUT if I start just putting lines  and changing the shapes too much, the whole thing will fall apart. So I am far enough into it to post it as is and I will keep on working on it this week. I'll post the finished one when it is done!  Happy Birthday Sweetie! Love You!

Creí que iba a a poder hacer una rendición más o menos rápida hoy y me parece que voy bien encaminada pero estoy cansada y estoy a empezando a ponerme desprolija así que me parece mejor parar por el día. La razón de este cuadro hoy es que es el cumpleaños de mi esposo y una de sus grandes pasiones es la navegación. Por eso quise probar de hacer este estudio para un cuadro más grande para él. El año pasado compramos un velero nuevo y esta es una foto sacada cuando lo estábamos trayendo desde Vancouver a Victoria. Acabábamos de salir de Vancouver y esas son las montañas de la costa Norte que vamos dejando atrás. El cielo se puso oscuro en un momento y tornó el agua de un color verde azulado espectacular. Le dediqué mucho tiempo al dibujo hoy para asegurame de tener las proporciones y perspectiva correctas y me parece que está bastante bien pero si empiezo a poner líneas donde no hay o ha cambiar las formas se me va arruinar. Estoy lo suficientemente avanzada como para colgarlo y voy a seguirlo esta semana. Lo voy a publicar de nuevo acá una vez terminado. Feliz Cumple John! Te quiero mucho!
