It looks like I took holidays from blogging! I have bene painting but have been very busy with the garden, spring break, a 4 day mini-Easter holiday and delivering paintings to customers :) My apologies, today I am posting this blog and finishing my taxes! :) Will be glad when that is done!!

A few weeks a ago I went painting with the Alfrescoes to Chinatown. It was wonderful to be there with so many noises, colours and  people walking by. There was a group of preschool kids on a field trip and they were ooooing and aaawwwing in front of our easels. There was some music played every so often from the Gates at the entrance of Chinatown. It all made the experience of being there so much richer. The cars parked in front of my subject kept changing, a couple of times, cars and trucks pulled up right in front of my subject, covering most of it, but they never stayed long enough to spoil the morning.... the joys of plein air.

I am pretty happy with what I did, I cleaned it up a bit in the studio but not too much as I didn't want to loose the freshness of the sketch, overall not bad for a couple of hours of fun!

Parece que me tomé vacaciones del blog! Si he pintado mucho pero no he publicado nada, he estado ocupada con el jardín, vacaciones de primavera, un mini-viaje de 4 días para Pascua y entregando cuadros vendidos :) Mis disculpas, hoy publico esto y termino mis impuestos! :) Voy a estar re-contenta cuando termine eso!!

Hace varias semanas fui a pintar con los Alfrescoes al Barrio Chino. Fue hermoso estar ahí con tantos ruidos, colores y gente caminando. Había un grupo de chicos de pre-escolar que estaban de paseo y se paraban frente a nuestros atriles admirando lo que pintábamos. Había música que a cada rato sonaba de las puertas de entrada al Barrio Chino. Todo esto hizo que la experiencia fuera tanto más gratificante. Los autos que estaban estacionados frente a lo que yo estaba pintando cambianban a cada rato, un par de veces autos y camionetas pararon bien al frente, tapando la mayoría de lo que yo estaba pintando, pero nunca se quedaron tanto tiempo como para arruinarme el día… El placer del pintaron libre.

Mis amigas  Alice Saltiel-Marshall de Alberta y  Sharlene Stushnov Lee estaban pintando con nosotros esa mañana y sacaron varias fotos! Miren arriba con las explaciones.

Estoy bastante contenta con lo que pinté, cambié algunas cosas una vex en el taller pero no demasiado porque no quería perder la espontaneidad, en general no está tan mal por un par de horas de diversión.

Today it was plein air Friday with the Al Frescoes and despite the horrible weather forecast (80% chance of rain and wind) I went. Of course, luckily it wasn't as bad as the forecast said it would be which was great! I have to confess though that even when Beacon Hill Park is an amazingly beautiful park, I rarely find things that I am really excited to paint there.... My friend Sharlene and I walked around for a good while getting photos and trying to find THE spot.... we finally settled to paint by the main ponds. I liked the red bushes and the light from a break in the clouds that was reflected in the water so.... that is what I did! By the end it was raining and it was time to pack up. When I got home I had to get rid of a bench I had painted in my painting..... It's not outstanding but it was a good effort for plein air. It's my least favourite painting of the month! Hoy es viernes de paintar al aire libre con los Al Frecoes y a pesar del pronóstico del tiempo que anunciaba 80% de posibildades de lluvia y viento, fui lo mismo. Por supuesto y por suerte no estuvo tan malo como estaba anuciado! Fuimos al Parque Beacon Hill que es un lugar hermoso pero tengo que confesar que  es raro que vea cosas ahí que me muero de ganas de pintar.... Mi amiga Sharlene y yo caminamos durante un buen rato sacando fotos y tratando de encontrar EL lugar.... finalmente decidimos pintar estos arbustos rojizos, anaranjados al lado de los estabques principales. Me gustaban los arbustos y la luz que había en el claro en el cielo con uss reflejos en el agua.... asi que eso es lo hice.  Cuando ya estabamos terminando había empezado a llover; cuando volví a casa tuve que borar un banco que había incluído originalmente en el cuadro.... No es el mejor pero es un buen esfuerzo para ser pintada al aire libre, Es mi cuadro menos preferido de todo el mes!! Arriba incluí algunas fotos de hoy.Gracias por pasar a visitar!

Wow, I certainly took a holiday from blogging didn't I? I was happy painting my life away and all of a sudden I realized Xmas was in one week and I hadn't done much to get ready for it other than taken out decorations for painting! (Well.... I had put them  up after I painted them!) Anyway, I got really busy with my birthday, my daughter home and the season itself. The little time left I had was for painting and drawing but never got to posting anything  here. I have certainly enjoyed (and still am) my daughter being home from university!

I had to save "Start Line" from posting as it was a commission  to be a Xmas present for someone . Now that Xmas has passed, I can go ahead and publish it. A couple of years ago I did several paintings from images I had taken at a local yearly sailing race here in Victoria called Swiftsure. I had sold the paintings, (see here and here) and when this person contacted me for one of them, I just painted another one!  She loved it, hope hubby did too! :)



On a different note, I am very exctied to have singed uop for the 30 day Painting challenge coming up Jan 1. Leslie Saeta hosts this challenge every year and this is going to be my 5th one. I have done 3 full ones, one half one from the hospital last Jan and I am eager to get going with this one. I am going to focus (I think) on flowers and gardens but I will give myself the freedok to either change things up if they are not working or if I get inspired to go in a different direction. If you are an artist, I highly encourage you  to do it as there is tremendous growth that happens when you do things consistenly for a perdiod of time. I have certainly seen gowth in myself! Wow!  Me tomé vacaciones del blog no? Estaba muy contenta pintando la vida y de repente me di cuenta que la navidad era la semana siguiente y no había echo nada mas que sacar algunas decoracions para pintarlas! (bueno.... si había decorado un poco la casa)  La cosa es que me ocupé mucho con mi cumpleaños, mi hija en casa y los preparativos navideños. El poco tiempo libre que me quedaba lo usé para pintar y dibujar y no para escribir acá. Les muestro mas adelante lo que pinté en esos días!

Tuve que esperar para mostrarles este cuadro ya que era un pedido para regalo de navidad y ahora que la Navidad ya ha pasado lo puedo publicar. Hace un par de años hice algunos cuadros de imágenes tomadas al comienzo de una carrera de veleros acá en Victoria que se llama Swifsure. Una clienta me contactó porque quería uno y como ya los había vendido, (veanlos acá y acá)  pinté otro. Le gustó mucho por suerte, espero que le haya gustado al esposo también! :)
   

Hablando de otro tema, estoy entusiasmada con haberme anotado para hacer otro Desafío de 30 Cuadros en 30 Días que empieza el 1 de Enero. Leslie Saeta lo organiza todos los enero y septiembre  y este va a  ser mi quinto. He echo 3 completos y uno a medias desde el hospital el año pasado y estoy ansiosa porque comience este. Voy a enforcarme en pintar flores y jardines pero con la libertad de cambiar rumbo si quiero. Si sos artista, te recomiendo hacerlo ya que yo he visto crecimento increíble cuando uno hace algo de forma consistente durante un período de tiempo.  Ciertamente yo he crecido mucho como artista con los anteriores! Vayan a anotarse en el link anterior. Hay gente de todo el mundo.  Voy a por supuesto compatir lo que hago en este blog y en Facebook, Instagram y Twitter. :) (Pueden conectarse ahí conmigo también y compartir!)

Happy Halloween everyone! 

I couldn't resist this old house with the rock wall and all the carved pumpkins by the front door and stairs. I was of course driving around and saw this scene so had to go back and take the photo, it is not quite finished but can't work in it today as I am in Vancouver at the moment spending some wonderful time with my daughter. I did  it in a rush yesterday morning as I had to pack and get ready; I see now in the photo that I still have some stuff to clean up but don't worry, I won't rake the leaves! 

For my non-norteamerican friends: Halloween is a big day here. It's a special day for kids who get dressed up in costumes  and go out asking for candy in the neighborhood, they knock on people's houses and  say: "trick-or-treat? The owners of the house have to give them candy or do a  trick for them.  Lots of houses are decorated and every family puts pumpkins outside by the front door, usually carved with special designs. Where does the origin of the pumpkin tradition come from I wonder? My kids are all grown up now and don't go out trick or treating any more, :( , they would like to probably as they always ended up with enough candy for the whole year!

Feliz Halloween para todos! 

No pude resistir esta casa antigua con las paredes y escalera de piedra y los zapallos calados en la puerta! Andaba dando vueltas en el auto cuando la vi y tuve que volver a sacarle la foto. No está terminado del todo pero no puedo hacerlo hoy ya que estoy en Vancouver visitando a mi hija. La pinté a las apuradas ayer a la mañana antes de armar el bolso y prepararme para venir.  Veo ahora en la foto que tengo que "limpiar" un montón de detalles, pero no se preocupen, no voy a barrer las hojas! 

Para mis amigos no norteamericanos: el Halloween se celebra mucho acá.  Es un dia especial para los chicos, que se disfrazan y salen a pedir golosinas en la calle, se golpea la puerta de cada casa y los chicos dicen: "Golosina o truco?", los dueños de la casa tienen que darle golosinas o hacer un truco. Muchas casas están decoradas  y todas las familias ponen un zapallo en la puerta, normalmente calado con motivos de la ocasión. (De dónde vendrá el origen de los zapallos?) Mis hijos ya están grandes y ya no salen disfrazados :( probablemente les gustaría ya que siempre juntaban suficientes golosinas para todo el año!

I am so happy I have 2 paintings accepted into the Federation of Canadian Artists 2015 Juried Fall Show!!!  They are Witness (above)  and Thankful, my tribute to Thanksgiving I showed here. 

I painted Witness back in the Spring which I hadn't shown before and it is an image of a Totem Pole in Thunderbird Park , downtown Victoria. There are many totem poles in the city, carved by native artists throughout time. They are beautiful pieces of art and they carry wonderful stories with them. I called this one Witness because it's been there for so many years and I imagine it has witnessed many many things, from tourists strolling, taking photos to seasons, storms, generations.... I will have to go and find out the story behind this one maybe. Wonder where I go for that?

Show runs from  Oct 30 to Nov 26 and it is held at  Goward House, 2495 Arbutus Road.  There is a show opening reception Sun Nov 1, 2-4 pm. Unfortunately I don't think I can be there as I will probably be out of town.  (Remember to switch your clocks on Sunday for Daylight Savings!) Please note Goward House is open Monday to Friday  9-4 pm.

Estoy muy contenta  de tener 2 cuadros aceptados en la Muestra de Otoño-2015- de la Federación de Artistas Canadienses!!  Ellos son "Testigo" (arriba) y "Agradecida", mi tributo al Día de Acción de Gracias que les mostré aquí. 

Pinté "Testigo" en la primavera y es una imágen de un Totem que esté en el Parque Thunderbird en el centro de Victoria.   Hay muchos totems por toda la ciudad, creados por artistas nativos . Son hermosas piezas de arte que cuentan historias locales. Titulé esta pieza "Testigo" ya que este totem está ahí desde hace muchos años y me imagino que ha sido testigo de tantas, tantas cosas: desde turistas , paseando y sacando fotos  a estaciones del año, tormentas, generaciones....  Voy a tener que tratar de averiguar el cuento de este. Me pregunto dónde puedo averiguar eso?

La muestra va desde el 30 de Octubre hasta el 26 de Noviembre, en la Casa Goward, 2495 Arbutus Rd. Hay una recepción de artistas el Domingo 1 de Noviembre de 2 a 4. Lamentablemente creo que no puedo ir ya que no voy a estar en Victoria. (Recuerden cambiar los relojes una hora el domingo!! Por favor tengan en cuenta que Goward House está abierta de Lunes a Viernes de 9 a 4 .

Morning Walk

There is nothing like a morning walk in the woods enjoying the sounds, the smells and the colour. Again,  just like the last one,  this one is inspired by Goldstream Park which is very close to Victoria, only about 20 minutes by car. I am very fortunate to live where I do, there is beauty  everywhere year round :)

Painting this one was interesting. I started painting without a clear plan of attack, (may not have been the best idea but....), I just knew I didn't want to get really tight with detail, wanted to be able to keep the initial excitement of the rough in. Eventhough I was using oils, light washes and negative painting started happening, similar to watercolours and I went went with the flow, without forcing the canvas to go in any different direction. I enjoyed the process and I am pretty happy with the result.

No hay nada mejor algunos días que una caminata temprano a la mañana en el bosque disfutando de los sonidos, los aromas y los colores. Como la anterior, esta pieza también fue inspirada por el Parque Goldstream  que está aproximadamente a 20 minutos del centro de Victoria. Soy muy afortunafda de vivir donde vivo, hay belleza por todos lados el año entero. :)

Fue interesante pintar este cuadro. Comencé sin un plan específico (tal vez hacer eso no es la mejor idea pero....bueno....) Sabía que no quería poner demasiados detalles, quería mantener la frescura del bosquejo inicial. A pesar de usar oleos, utilicé capas finas de pintura cmo si fuera acuarelas. No forcé un cambio de dirección y dejé que el lienzo se resolvera solo. Disfruté del proceso y estoy bastante satisfecha con el resultado.

This is the third painting that is part of the "Visions of Victoria" show at St. Ann's Academy. It is actually a study for a larger painting possibly and I say possibly because usually once I do a painting I loose interest to do it again. We will see..... It's an image from our Inner Harbour in Downtown Victoria. Our old boat was the whitish sailboat in it, "Meadowlark", a 33 foot Gibsea. The Inner Harbour is always a very busy place, full of jugglers, street artists and tourists. Great for people watching!

Este es el tercer cuadro que forma parte de la muestra "Visiones de Victoria" en la Academia St. Ann. Es tal vez un estudio para un cuadro más grande. Digo tal vez porque normalmente una vez que hago un cuadro, pierdo el interés por hacerlo de nuevo. Veremos esta vez..... Es una imagen del Puerto Interno en el centro de Victoria. La embarcación blanca es nuestro viejo velero, "Meadowlark", un Gibsea de 33 pies que lo habíamos traído por esa noche. El Puerto Interno es siempre un gran lugar para disfrutar malabaristas, artistas en la calle, turistas y en general bárbaro para simplemente sentarse y mirar a la gente!

"Visions of Victoria" by the Island Illustrators Society

I have been very busy after the Moss Street Paint In with just summer, parents visiting, (we took them  sailing for a couple of days) and getting 3 paintings ready for a show organized by the Island Illustrators Society. The show is called "Visions of Victoria" and the premises were to just to give different our images and impressions of Victoria, our town.
I had fun with these ones! I had started Fisgard at the Paint In but never got too far with it! Instead of continuing with what I had started there, I started from scratch.
The show is held at St.Ann's Academy from  Aug 1 to Oct 31 with an opening reception this Sunday, Aug 2 from 2 to 4.  Come to see the artwork and also to see this interesting building that is a national historic site and once was a school for girls. It has a beautiful small chapel and gardens where weddings are often held.

He andado bastante ocupada después del Moss Street Paint In con muchas cosas, entre otras,  verano, padres visitando (los llevamos a navegar unos días) y preparando 3 cuadros para un show organizado por la Sociedad de Ilustadores de la Isla. La muestra se llama "Visiones de Victoria" y la idea era mostrar distintas partes o aspectos de Victoria, nuestra ciudad. Disfruté mucho al pintar estos cuadros! Había empezado Fisgard en la Pintada pero por supuesto no había llegado muy lejos, pero en lugar de seguir con ese mismo, lo empecé completamente de nuevo.
La muestra es en St Ann's Academy,  corre desde el 1 de Agosto hasta el 31 de Octubre con una recepción de apertura este Domingo 2 de Agosto de 2 a 4 de la tarde. Pasen a ver el arte y también a visitar este lugar histórico, un edificio interesante con una capilla y jardines hermosos en donde hay casamientos a menudo.

International Visitors

Sketches and fun of TC and Company

TC and Co couldn't believe there was no snow in Canada!!

I am very excited to share with you that TC and Co. are visiting us in Victoria last week. I had put my name down about a couple of years ago to host and paint TC, The Traveling Chicken and I was very happy a few weeks go when I got the email that saying they were on the way.  I was a bit nervous as this is a really well-traveled chicken and I wanted to make sure he felt at home. TC has been to India, every state in the United States, UK, France, Hungary, Greece, Netherlands, Scotland, Canada and more. They were actually thrilled to get here after being detoured due to to snow storms in the US (the itinerary was North Carolina, Florida, Toronto, Vancouver and finally Victoria).  They were relieved  to be able to get out of the box and stretch a bit after such a long trip.

Now, they confessed they were a bit nervous about coming to Canada in the winter time, after all, Canada IS ice and snow right? Well.... Were they surprised or what??!?!?  All they kept saying as they looked out my kitchen window  was: "Where is the snow??????" I shared with them that they have actually come to the "tropics" of Canada. We ARE on a "small island in the Pacific" after all. True. Vancouver Island in the Pacific North West. We haven't had any snow here this year, snowdrops are long gone, daffodils are up and there are flowers everywhere! I think they like it here! 

They posed  for me for a short while so I could just do a quick sketch and blind contour drawings.   They promised to pose longer at some point this week.

Estoy muy contenta de contarles que TC y Compañia están de visita en Victoria esta semana pasada. Hace dos años que puse mi nombre en una lista para alojar y pintar a TC, el Pollo Viajero y me alegró mucho cuando recibí el email diciendo que estaban en camino. Estaba también un poco nerviosa ya que este pollo es de mundo y quería quese sintiera cómodo en nuestra casa. TC ha ido a India, todos los estados en EEUU, el Reino Unido, Francia, Hungría, Grecia, Holanda, Escocia, Canada y más! Ellos estaban felices de haber llegado despues de desvíos  por tormentas de nieve en EEUU, (el itinerario fue Carolina del Norte, Florida, Toronto, Vancouver y finalmente Victoria). Estuvieron muy aliviados de haber podido salir de la caja y estirarse después de un viaje tan largo. 

Ellos me confesaron que estaban un poco preocupados por venir a Canadá en el invierno, ya que Canadá es todo hielo y nieve, no? Qué sorpresa que se llevaron!!! Lo único que decían sin parar mirando afuera de la ventana de mi cocina era: ¿y dónde está la nieve??? Les conté que en realidad ellos han venido a los "trópicos" de Canadá. Sí, estamos en una "pequeña Isla en el Pacifico". Es verdad. La Isla de Vancouver en el Noroeste Pacifico. No hemos tenido nada de nieve este año, las campanitas ya hace rato que se acabaron, los narcisos están a pleno y hay flores por todos lados! Me parece que les gusta estar acá. 

Posaron un rato para que yo hiciera unos bosquejos, me prometieron posar por más tiempo en algún momento esta semana.

I am very behind with posting, have been working and painting but have not managed to post them on blogger. (Part of it is the lack of good photos of I have created)

So here goes one that I did a Friday 2 weeks ago when we (the AlFrescoes) went back to Governement House. What caught my eye was the light on the water, it kept changing all morning of course. 

I have a great treat of colour for the next few posts, I am as I write in La Conner, WA. I came with 2 friends to paint the tulip fields and boy did we have fun with colour! Today, after a very productive week, we are going back home via Vancouver where we will hit the Lawren Harris Exhibition at the Vancouver Art Gallery. It has been a great art week! We all need those every now and then!

Estoy muy retrazada con los blog, he estado trabajando y pintando pero no los puesto en blogger, en parte porque no tengo buenas imágenes de los que he creado.

Así que acá va una que pinté hace 2 semanas cuando volvimos con los Alfrescoes a la Casa de Gobierno. Lo que me llamó la atención fue la luz sobre el agua que por supuesto cambiaba a cada rato. 

Tengo una sorpresa de colores para los próximos posts. Estoy en La Conner, Washintgon en este momento. Vine con dos amigas a pintar los campos de tulipanes y si que nos hemos divertido con color!! Hoy ya volvemos después de una semana muy productiva; vamos a pasar por Vancouver y vamos a visitar la muestra de Lawren Harris en la Galeria de Arte de Vancouver. Muy entusiasmada con eso hoy!  Ha sido una gran semana de arte! Todos necesitamos una semana así de vez en cuando!
