A few weeks ago I went with the Al Frescoes to Tulista Park in Sydney to paint for our regular Friday pain out. I must confess that I was not very excited when I saw the location as I didn't feel there was too much there to paint. But as I pulled up the parking lot, I saw this gorgeous strip of light in the sky and THAT is what I wanted to paint right away. I  know now to trust my first instinct when I go plein air painting, to go for THAT particular thing that caught my eye at the beginning.  You can continue to search for the "perfect" spot or view to paint for half the morning if you are not careful but you usually end up wasting most of the time searching instead of setting up and getting going right away. I always tell myself I can always come back and paint another one in this location. I didn't do too much to this one once back in  the studio, I just added a few touches of light on the water I felt were needed.
I am dilligently getting ready for the Cadboro Bay-Gordon Head Studio Tour  which is this next Sat & Sunday May 7 & 8,11 to 4 pm. I am opening my home and studio to the public so come and visit! 3876A Finnerty Rd. My house is at the very end of the long driveway, see you then!

Hace unas semanas fuí con los Al Frescos al Parque Tulista en Sidney a pintar para una de nuestras pintadas de los viernes. Tengo que confesar que no estaba muy entusiasmada con el lugar donde íbamos ya que creía que no había demasiadas cosas interesantes ahí para pintar. Pero cuando llegué al estacionamiento ví una luz hermosísima en el cielo y eso fué lo que quise pintar inmediatamente. A esta altura ya sé que debo confiar en mi primer instinto cuando voy a pintar afuera, pintar sin dudar esa cosa especial que me llamó la atención en su primer momento. A veces uno puede seguir tratando durante toda la mañana de encontrar el lugar o la vista perfecta para pintar  y si no se tiene cuidado se puede perder la mayor parte del tiempo buscando ese lugar en lugar de empezar inmediatamente. Siempre me digo ahora que si hay mas vistas buenas, puedo volver y pintar otro cuatro en este lugar, simple! No cambié muchas cosas a este cuadro una vez que volví al taller, simplemente le agregué unos toques de luz en el agua que me parecía eran necesarias.
Me estoy preparando para el  Tour de Talleres de Cadboro Bay-Gordon Head que es el Sábado y Domingo que viene, 7 & 8 de Mayo de 11 a 4 . Estoy por abrir mi casa y taller al público para compartir mi arte. Mi dirección es 3876A Finnerty Rd y mi casa es la tercera desde la calle.  Mi caminito para la casa es largo... Nos vemos!

Today it was plein air Friday with the Al Frescoes and despite the horrible weather forecast (80% chance of rain and wind) I went. Of course, luckily it wasn't as bad as the forecast said it would be which was great! I have to confess though that even when Beacon Hill Park is an amazingly beautiful park, I rarely find things that I am really excited to paint there.... My friend Sharlene and I walked around for a good while getting photos and trying to find THE spot.... we finally settled to paint by the main ponds. I liked the red bushes and the light from a break in the clouds that was reflected in the water so.... that is what I did! By the end it was raining and it was time to pack up. When I got home I had to get rid of a bench I had painted in my painting..... It's not outstanding but it was a good effort for plein air. It's my least favourite painting of the month! Hoy es viernes de paintar al aire libre con los Al Frecoes y a pesar del pronóstico del tiempo que anunciaba 80% de posibildades de lluvia y viento, fui lo mismo. Por supuesto y por suerte no estuvo tan malo como estaba anuciado! Fuimos al Parque Beacon Hill que es un lugar hermoso pero tengo que confesar que  es raro que vea cosas ahí que me muero de ganas de pintar.... Mi amiga Sharlene y yo caminamos durante un buen rato sacando fotos y tratando de encontrar EL lugar.... finalmente decidimos pintar estos arbustos rojizos, anaranjados al lado de los estabques principales. Me gustaban los arbustos y la luz que había en el claro en el cielo con uss reflejos en el agua.... asi que eso es lo hice.  Cuando ya estabamos terminando había empezado a llover; cuando volví a casa tuve que borar un banco que había incluído originalmente en el cuadro.... No es el mejor pero es un buen esfuerzo para ser pintada al aire libre, Es mi cuadro menos preferido de todo el mes!! Arriba incluí algunas fotos de hoy.Gracias por pasar a visitar!

Yahoo!!!!! We are half way over the challenge!!! As much as I am enjoying it and I am totally in the groove of it, I am looking forward to a slower pace in Feb. I am preparing for a couple of different shows in Feb as well so there is a lot to do!!

Today it is Friday and it means Plein air with the Al Frescoes again. We went to Fisgard Lighthouse in Fort Rodd Hill. It was a chilly morning, it rained a bit (at times my oils were more like watercolours!) but again, we persevered....  we are get a medal for braving it out there!!! I saw the strip of light under the clouds on the waterline as soon as we walked onto the site. And THAT is what I wanted to paint. I am pleased as I was able to stick to that plan, The buildings may  have errors, actually, not may have, DO have errors but it's ok for a plein air sketch. I feel I got the essense of what I saw this morning.

Yahoo!!!!! Estamos ya a medio camino con el desafío!! Lo estoy disfrutando mucho y he entrado en un buen ritmo pero la verdad es que quiero que Febrero llegue para poder ir mas despacio una vez que se termine el desafío. Me estoy preparando para varias muestra también en Feb por lo que hay mucho que hacer!!

Hoy es Viernes y fuí a pintar con los Al Frescoes de nuevo, Fuimos al lucero Fisgard en Fort Rodd Hill. Hacía frio y llovió un poco (de a ratos mis óleos, eran mas acuarelas que óleos)  pero de nuevo, perseveramos ..... recibimos una medalla por salir a pintar!! Ví ese pedacito de luz debajo de las nubes sobre el agua y ESO fue lo que quise pintar. Estoy contenta con haberme mantenido firme con esa idea. Los edificios pueden tener errores, no, mejor dicho, sí tienen errores, pero en general estoy satisfechapor ser un bosquejo al aire libre. Siento que pude capturar la esencia de lo que yo ví esta mañana.

Light on the Ridge - Day 4 of 260

This painting was the second one painted in Pocket Lake the last day in the Bugaboos. The weather that day as I told you before  was changing every 5 minutes. As we were getting down to  the ridge where we were to paint that day I saw a little pocket of  beautiful light on the ridge and it didn't take very long until the whole back mountain was covered by clouds and the light was gone. I spent the morning thinking of it while I painted something else. But later on, the clouds moved and I quickly started painting,  realizing I didnt't have too long before the clouds that were coming in would cover the light AGAIN. They did indeed cover up everything so as I was already started I concentrated on the moutaiin in front hoping the clouds would move. And AGAIN thankfully they did and I was able to finish the back ridge and put in in the gorgeous little pocket of light, which was not the same, but I  clearly remembered it from the morning. I didn't do too much once in the studio, just keyed up the light a bit more and darkened the silhouettes of the trees. This is probably my favourite painting I did on the trip and it was a great exercise on "visual memory". That light was very much stuck in my head and I used lots of that "memory" while the clouds were playing with me!

Este cuadro fue el segundo del día que pasamos en Pocket Lake, el último día en los Bugaboos. El tiempo ese día como les conté anteriormente cambiaba cada 5 minutos. Cuando estabamos aterriznado en este lugar vi un pedacito hermoso de luz y no pasó mucho tiempo antes de que estuviera totalmente cubierto por nubes. Me pasé la mañana pensando en esa imagen, mientras pintaba el otro cuadro. Pero después, las nubes se fueron y comencé rapidamente a pintar porque sabía que no tenía mucho tiempo antes de otras nubes lo cubrieran DE NUEVO. Efectivamente enseguida no mas las nubes regresaron, cubriendo todo DE NUEVO y como ya había empezado, me concentré en la montaña de adelante esperando que las nubes se fueran. NUEVAMENTE por suerte se fueron y me dejaron ver   las montañas de atrás y la luz, que no era lo mismo pero yo la recordaba claramente de la mañana. No le he agregado mucho a este cuadro una vez en el taller, le aclaré la luz y oscurecí las siluetas de los árboles. Creo que este es mi cuadro favorito de los que pinté en el viaje  y fue un ejercicio excelente de "memoria visual". Esa luz estaba grabada en mi cabeza y usé muchos elementos de esa memoria mientras las nubes jugaban conmigo!!

I was a very busy girl last week getting ready for 2 shows, the FCA one and ALLSORTS, an eclectic mix of artists showcasing a few pieces each.  I had been invited by my friend Judee Doyle to participate in this show back in October I think. When I committed to it, I couldn't, of course, foresee the events that took place later on in November which almost prevented me from being able to participate.  But I am happy that despite everything I was able to have a couple of new pieces that I painted in February after we were out of the hospital.   The show turned out to look great. My friend Sharlene Stushnov-Lee and myself did the hanging of the artwork and we got lots of compliments on it. The opening was last Friday night, it was very well attended and lots of fun (we even had a puppet show and some opera!).
My goal with this painting was to capture the light that happens when you have very dark skies after a storm and the sun comes out tinting everything a very rich deep gold. These are the true colours you see, just as if Nature had been photopshopped!! This is again a BC Landscape, so typical of what you see when you live in this part of the world. Very blessed to live in such a beautiful place!

Esta semana pasada estuve muy ocupada preparandome para dos muestras, la de la Federación y otra llamada "De Todas Clases", un grupo ecléctico de artistas que nos reunimos para mostrar algunos de nuestros trabajos. My amiga Judee Doyle me había invitado a participar en Octubre del año pasado creo que fue. Cuando me comprometí no había por supesto podido preveer los acontecimientos de Noviembre que casi hicieron que no pudiera hacer nada para esar lista. Pero la verdad es que estoy contenta de que a pesar de todo en Febrero y Marzo después de salir del hospital pude crear un par de cuadros nuevos para incluir. La muestra salió muy bien, Mi amiga Sharlene Stushnov-Lee y yo  hicimos la instalación y recibimos muchos elogios. La recepción de Artistas fue el viernes pasado a   la noche, hubo mucha gente y estuvo muy divertida, tuvimos hasta hasta títeres y ópera!
Mi meta con esta pintura fue capturar la luz que hay cuando los cielos se ponen muy oscuros después de una tormenta y sale el sol, tiñiendo todo de un  dorado profundo. Estos son colores verdaderos y es como si a la Naturaleza le hubieran echo Fotoshop!! Este es un paisaje de BC (British Columbia) que es tan típico de lo que se ve cuando uno vive en esta parte del mundo. Estoy muy agradecida de vivir en un lugar tan hermoso!
