Day 26 of 30: New Start

I did 2 paintings today..... but will only show you one..... I  wiped the first one. I started with an idea, I had an okeish reference photo and  I went for it. I knew from the get-go that it wasn't a great composition but  I thought (very wrongly) that I would be able to fix it as I went along. Well, I changed things several times and in the end I said, this is just not working. So I pulled a different canvas and did a 6x6 sky with the paint on my pallette. I am pleased with this one, I like the soft colours in it. I need to remember for the future: If I am not 100% sold on an idea, DO NOT GO FOR IT!!! There's a reason why experienced, talented, awesome artists do thumbnails and notans and sketches beforehand and work out all the kinks that way before committing to the big canvas.  This is the beauty of smallish daily paintings though. I only invested a couple of hours today which of course were not wasted anyway as I learnt not only how to move paint around was reminded that it is much better to have a plan one is excited about!

Hoy hice dos cuadros.... Pero sólo les voy a mostrar uno ya que al otro lo borré. Tenía una una idea, una foto de referencia más o menos y empecé no más. Sabía desde el principio que la composición no era la mejor pero pensé (muy erróneamente) que iba a poder hacer correcciones en el camino. Y bueno, moví algunos elementos y llegó un punto que dije, esto no está funcionando. Así que agarré un lienzo chiquito nuevo e hice este cielo con la pintura que tenía en la paleta. Me gusta como quedó, me gustan los colores especialmente. Tengo que recordar la próxima vez que si no estoy completamente segura de una idea, NO TENGO QUE SEGUIR ADELANTE!!!!! Esta es la razón por la que pintores buenísimos, con experiencia y talento comienzan con bosquejos en miniatura, notan (dibujo solamente blanco y negro para mostrar la luz y la sombra), bosquejos preliminares  para de esa manera resolver todos los posible problemas antes de empezar en un lienzo grande. Lo bueno de la pintura diaria en cuadros chiquitos es que hoy por ejemplo sólo invertí un par de horas antes de borarlo que no fueron mal gastadas ya que practiqué empujar pintura de acá para allá y recordé que es siempre bueno tener un plan de acción con el que uno está satisfecho!

I am so happy I have 2 paintings accepted into the Federation of Canadian Artists 2015 Juried Fall Show!!!  They are Witness (above)  and Thankful, my tribute to Thanksgiving I showed here. 

I painted Witness back in the Spring which I hadn't shown before and it is an image of a Totem Pole in Thunderbird Park , downtown Victoria. There are many totem poles in the city, carved by native artists throughout time. They are beautiful pieces of art and they carry wonderful stories with them. I called this one Witness because it's been there for so many years and I imagine it has witnessed many many things, from tourists strolling, taking photos to seasons, storms, generations.... I will have to go and find out the story behind this one maybe. Wonder where I go for that?

Show runs from  Oct 30 to Nov 26 and it is held at  Goward House, 2495 Arbutus Road.  There is a show opening reception Sun Nov 1, 2-4 pm. Unfortunately I don't think I can be there as I will probably be out of town.  (Remember to switch your clocks on Sunday for Daylight Savings!) Please note Goward House is open Monday to Friday  9-4 pm.

Estoy muy contenta  de tener 2 cuadros aceptados en la Muestra de Otoño-2015- de la Federación de Artistas Canadienses!!  Ellos son "Testigo" (arriba) y "Agradecida", mi tributo al Día de Acción de Gracias que les mostré aquí. 

Pinté "Testigo" en la primavera y es una imágen de un Totem que esté en el Parque Thunderbird en el centro de Victoria.   Hay muchos totems por toda la ciudad, creados por artistas nativos . Son hermosas piezas de arte que cuentan historias locales. Titulé esta pieza "Testigo" ya que este totem está ahí desde hace muchos años y me imagino que ha sido testigo de tantas, tantas cosas: desde turistas , paseando y sacando fotos  a estaciones del año, tormentas, generaciones....  Voy a tener que tratar de averiguar el cuento de este. Me pregunto dónde puedo averiguar eso?

La muestra va desde el 30 de Octubre hasta el 26 de Noviembre, en la Casa Goward, 2495 Arbutus Rd. Hay una recepción de artistas el Domingo 1 de Noviembre de 2 a 4. Lamentablemente creo que no puedo ir ya que no voy a estar en Victoria. (Recuerden cambiar los relojes una hora el domingo!! Por favor tengan en cuenta que Goward House está abierta de Lunes a Viernes de 9 a 4 .

Continuing on this virtual trip, we come back to the heart of Tuscany at Il Borgo di Gebbia that I mentioned a few posts ago. We spent a very relaxing afternoon and evening enjoying the views from this special place. Looking at it now on the computer and the blog, I think I will add a pot with greens on the left for balance or make the bright green bushes higher to achieve that. Too late now to go do it and photgraph again. That is the magic of being an artist, I am able to change things to my liking!

I am behind 2 paintings now :( but family comes first. My kids have changed school this past week and the transition has taken up a lot of my time. Hopefully things will be bck to a regular routine soon!

Siguiendo e este viaje virtual, volvemos al corazón de la Toscana en Il Borgo di Gebbia que mencioné hace unos días. Pasamos una tarde muy tranquila disfrutando las vistas de este lugar tan especial. Ahora que veo la imagen en la computadora y en el blog, creo que mañana voy a agregar una maceta con verdes a la izquierda para tener mas balance o tal vez haga que los arbustos detrás de la cerca sean mas altos para lograr lo mismo. Ahora es demasiado tarde para hacerlo y fotografiar de nuevo. Esa es la magia de ser artista, puedo cambiar las cosas como quiero! :)

Estoy retrasada dos cuadros :( pero la familia viene primero que nada. Mis hijos han cambiado de escuela esta semana y la transición  ha ocupado mucho de mi tiempo. Seguro que pronto vamos a entrar en rutina!

Well am I happy or what?? I submitted this piece to The Spring FCA-Victoria Show (Federation of Canadian Artists) and it got accepted! I was pretty pleased with the finished painting which I had started back in November. I hadn't had time to finish it and I did last week. When I went in yesterday to drop off the painting for adjudication I got really  nervous when I saw how much very good work there was in that room. I walked out going.... "Hmmmmm I am not sure it will make it!".  So I was really thrilled when it did! The show runs March 12 - 23 hosted at Coast Collective, open Wednesday through Sundays, noon to 5. Opening Reception with Artists in Attendance is Sat. March 15, 2 to 4 pm. See the invite below. Do stop by if you are in the area, say hi and enjoy the beautiful works of many talented local artists!

"Alberta Sun"  is from an image I took a couple of years ago when I visited Fort McMurray in Northern Alberta which is where my husband works. I was very fortunate that the weekend I was there the temperatures were reasonable, only about -12 which is a far cry from the -25, -30 and even colder  they get on a regular basis. We went for a walk behind where his house is, the sun was shining and it created very beautiful lights and shadows. I have some more images from that walk that I am hoping to paint from in the future.

Estoy tan contenta! Presenté un cuadro para la Muestra de Primavera del FCA-Victoria (Federación de Artistas Canadienses). Estaba bastante satisfecha con como había quedado el cuadro que había empezado en Noviembre pasado y que no había tenido tiempo de terminar hasta la semana pasada. Cuando fui a llevarlo ayer para la adjudicación me puse  bastante nerviosa cuando ví cuántos cuadros de muy buen nivel  había. Salí de ahí diciendo "Hmmm..... no sé si me lo van  aceptar!" Por eso es que estoy doblemente contenta!! La muestra es desde el 12 al 23 de Marzo en Coast Collective, abierto de Miércoles and Domingo de 12 a 5 pm. La invitación está arriba. Paren si están en la zona, saluden y disfruten del los trabajos hermosos de muchos artistas locales.

"Soles de Alberta"  es de una imagen que tomé hace un par de años cuando visité Fort McMurray en el Norte de la Prov. de Alberta que es donde mi esposo trabaja. Tuve mucha suerte que la semana que fui de visita las temperatures estuvieron bastante razonables a 12 bajo cero (en compración a los bajo 25 or 30 o mas que tienen normalmente en el invierno). Fuimos a caminar por atrás de la casa de mi esposo, el sol brillaba y creaba luces y sobres muy hermosas. Tengo mas imágenes de este viaje y seguro voy a pintar otras piezas en el futuro.

Day 17: Lunch?

Now, this is the stuff I LOVE to paint! It is not quite finished but it is a good start, there are a few things that I  want to correct/add but it is going in a very good direction. 

So at the beginning of this challenge I announced I was doing this and a friend said right away: Number 17 is mine. I told him: Well, shouldn't you wait? See what I kind of stuff I start painting?.... He said that was what came to his mind. I was wondering at the time what to paint and then about a week ago it came to me. I took this shot in Saltspring Island, a few ago when we were on our sailing vacation. I had printed a dozen pictures or so from that trip that I want to paint and this is the one I picked for Day 17. This friend and I met many years ago, live in different cities and don't get to see each other very often. 

It is a good thing I painted it yesterday as we were in transit today.  We are at Quadra Island right now, tomorrow is our 19th wedding anniversary (Yes, holy cow! time flies! ).  I already know what I am painting tomorrow, I am excited to go explore the island, take lots of pictures  and maybe even set home paint box in some special spot while hubby and dog for a walk!

Esto es el tipo de cosas que me encanta pintar! No está terminada pero es un buen comienzo, hay algunas cosas que quiero corregir/agregar pero ya va en una buena dirección. 

Al principio de este desafío, anuncié lo que estaba por hacer y un amigo me dijo que la número 17 era de él. Le dije: no te parece que tenés que esperar? Ver que tipo de cosas pinto? Y me dijo que no, que cuando leyó lo que yo estaba por hacer el 17 fue lo que le vino a la mente. Desde entonces que me pregunto que  qué iba a pintar y la semana pasada decidí qué era. Había sacado esta foto en la Isla Saltspring cuando fuimos de vacaciones hace un par de semanas. Había ya imprimido una docena más o menos para pintar y esta es la que elegí para el Día 17. Este amigo y yo nos conocimos hace muchos años, vivimos en ciudades diferentes y no nos vemos mucho. 

Fue buena idea haberla pintado ayer ya que hoy estábamos en tránsito. Estamos ahora en la Isla Quadra. Mañana es mi aniversario de casada, 19 años, (si, que bárbaro cómo pasa el tiempo!) Ya se lo que voy a pintar mañana. Estoy entusiasmada con ir a explorar la isla mañana, sacar muchas fotos y hasta en una de esas armar la caja de pinturas y hacer un cuadrito mientras mi esposo y mi perra van a caminar!
