I belong to the Island Illustrators Society and one of the projects we worked on collaboratively this year was producing this colouring book as they continue to be so popular for both adults and kids. Everyone was invited to produce drawings  and I am happy to report I submitted 2 for this book (one of them shown below). "A Colourful Coast"  came out beautifully I think and it is available at various locations in Victoria and through me! Yo pertenezco a la Sociedad de los Ilustradores de la Isla y no de los proyectos en los que desarrollamos como grupo este año fue producir un libro para colorear ya que continúan siendo tan populares tanto para adultos como para niños. Todos los miembros de la sociedad fueron invitados a crear dibujos y estoy muy contenta de contarles que presenté dos para el libro, les muestro uno de ellos arriba. El libro "Una Costa Colorida" ha salido muy hermoso y  está disponible en distintos lugares en Victoria y por medio mío! Mándame un mensaje si están interesados en tener uno si viven en la zona, puedo entregar en persona o vayan al link incluídp y yo se los envío por correo. Salen $15  y son todas escenas locales y muy familiares.

Because the painting I showed you last time, "Mystic Vale" was on hold for someone at the time and I had originally painted it for a show, I decided to paint a different one for the "Illustrating Emily" Show organized by the Island Illustrators Society.  I decided to do the same image but trying to apply an "Emily look" to the landscape. It was a grat way to experiment with a different approach, I really really enjoyed it.  I am quite pleased with how it turned out. I don't know that this is a good photo of it but I don't have the painting anymore so this one will have to do for now!

The exhibition runs May 1 to 14 at Emily Carr House., (207 Government St. - 250-383-5843) with an Opening Reception on Sunday, May 1, 2-4 pm.
I will be in attendance on Sunday and I am excited to actually visit Carr House for the first time, I must confess I haven't been there yet in the 21 years I have lived here!
Also note that admission and a portion of the artwork sales go to support the Emily Carr House. Admission to Carr House is required to see the show with the exception of our opening reception date when it will be free to the public and friends. This a great chance to visit (me, some great artwok and Carr House!)

El "Valle Místico" que les mostré la vez anterior fue un cuadro que pinté originalmente para una muestra, pero debido a que había una persona interesada en él yo decidí pintar otro diferente para esta muestra que se llama "Ilustrando a Emily". Decidí hacer la misma imagen pero tratando de aplicar un poco el estilo de Emily al paisaje; fue una gran forma de experimentar con un enfoque diferente. Estoy bastante contenta con cómo me salió. Me parece que no es la mejor foto pero no tengo el cuadro ya  así que este va a tener que andar por ahora.

La muestra va desde el 1 al 14 de Mayo  en la Emily Carr House., (207 Government St. - 250-383-5843) con una recepción de apertura el sábado 1 de mayo de 2:00 a 4:00 de la tarde. Yo voy a estar voy a estar allí el domingo y estoy bastante entusiasmada con visitar la Casa Carr por primera vez, debo confesar que a pesar de haber vivido 21 años en esta ciudad todavía no he ido a visitarla. También quiero  tengan en cuanta que la entrada y una porción de las ventas de los cuadros están destinadas a recaudar fondos para la Casa Carr. Se requiere tarifa de admisión para entrar y  para ver la muestra con excepción de la recepción de apertura que vamos a tener: la entrada va a ser gratis para el público y  los amigos. Esta es una gran oportunidad para visitar.

Getting started in Mystic Vale - Uvic
Empezando el día en el Valle Místico - Uvic

I have mentioned before that I am a member of the Island Illustrators Society and I have been participating int he different shows the society organizes. The show this year is called "Illustrating Emily Carr". So a couple of months ago I set out to create my piece for it. Emily used to do a LOT of plein air painting, she used to paint the forests, the trees, the local sights.... So I chose to do that, immerse myself in nature and attempt to put into canvas.  I went to a forest VERY close to my house, called Mystic Vale which is  inside the Uvic Campus. The light coming through the trees is always really beautiful in there and it is like a little oasis in a very urban area. I set up my easel and started painting. Loved it, painting  outdoors is always a really beautiful experience, even when the light changes, the sun comes in and out, it's too cold, or too hot, (haha, you may wonder why it's a great experience???)   You get to listen to the sounds of the forest, the wind, the birds and it all goes into your painting.... Some people stopped by to see what I was doing and chat. One very kind lady in particular took these photos that I am posting. Thank you so much Gillian for taking them and sending them to me. And thank you Brian and Madelaine for coming out to play with me that morning!

This was at the beginning of March which is why I am all bundled up :)
Esto fue al comienzo de Febrero y es por eso que estoy toda abrigada :) 

I am very pleased with how this painting turned out. Even though I set out to paint it for the show, "Mystic Vale"  is on hold for someone who is interested in it so because of it I decided to do another one for the show which I will share in the next post! Stay Tuned!

Les he contado antes que soy miembro de la Sociedad de Ilustradoes de la Isla y participo regularmente de las muestras que la sociedad organiza. La de este año se llama "Ilustrando a Emily Carr" y por eso hace un par de meses salí a crear mi cuadro para esa muestra.  Emily solía salir a pintar MUCHO al aire libre, ella pintaba los bosques, los árboles, muchos lugares típicos de la zona así es que elegí hacer eso, inmersarme en la naturaleza y tratar de ponerla sobre el lienzo. Fui a un bosquecito muy cerca de mi casa que se llama el Velle Místico que queda dentro del campo de la universidad. La luz del sol que se filtra entre los árboles es siempre muy hermosa en este lugar que es como un pequeño oasis en el medio en una zona muy urbana. Armé el atril y empecé a pintar. Me encantó! El pintar afuera muchas veces es una experiencia muy hermosa, aún cuando la luz la luz cambia, el sol entra y sale, aveces hace frio....  o calor etc. etc. Jaja, se deben estar preguntando porqué digo que es hermoso..... se pueden escuchar los sonidos del bosque, el viento, los animales, los pájaros....  todo eso va dentro del cuadro. Varias personas pararon a mirar lo que yo hacía y a conversar. Una señora muy amable en particular me sacó varias fotos y las he agregado acá. Muchísimas gracias Gillian por tomar las fotos y por mandármelas. Y gracias Brian y Madelaine por salir a jugar conmigo esa mañana!

Estoy muy contenta con cómo salió este cuadro. A pesar de que empecé a pintar esto para una muestra, "Valle Místico" está reservado para alguien que está interesado en comprarla y a raíz de eso decidí pintar un cuadro distinto para la muestra que se las voy a mostrar en el próxima post.  Van a tener que esperar.

I belong to several organizations and the Island Illustrators Society is one of them. Every year for the last few years they have had an alphabet show which is displayed at the different public libraries  in the city throughout the year. Last year I picked a few  letters and this is one of them. The subject was related to Victoria as a city and the different things that are unique to it. I chose to use Mixed Media, just having fun with old charts, watercolour paper and acrylic paint. I really enjoyed  working on this project!  Y is for Yacht race, referring to the Sailing Race that happens every year in the spring called Swiftsure.

Tomorrow from 10 to 12, I will be representing the IIS at the Nellie McClung Branch on Cedar Hill and Shelbourne where I will show people how to easily turn doodles into interesting designs. Stop by and visit if you have time.

Yo pertenezco a  varias organizaciones y los Ilustradores de la Isla es una de ellas. Todos estos últimos años, se organiza una muestra que rota por las distintas bibliotecas de la ciudad con el abecedario. El año pasado yo elegí 3 letras y esta es una de ellas. El tema era la ciudad de Victoria y las cosas características que tiene u ocurren acá. Elegí usar diferentes materiales como cartas de navegación viejas que tenía, papel de acuela y acrílicos.  Fue muy divertido trabajar en este proyecto. "Y" es para la regata llamada Swiftsure que ocurre todas las primaveras.

Mañana de 10 a 12 voy a estar representando a la Sociedad de Ilustradores de la Isla en la Biblioteca Nellie McLung en la esquina de Shelboure y Cedar Hill.  Voy a mostrar cómo se pueden transformar garabatos en diseños interesantes. Pasen a visitar si tienen tiempo.

This is the third painting that is part of the "Visions of Victoria" show at St. Ann's Academy. It is actually a study for a larger painting possibly and I say possibly because usually once I do a painting I loose interest to do it again. We will see..... It's an image from our Inner Harbour in Downtown Victoria. Our old boat was the whitish sailboat in it, "Meadowlark", a 33 foot Gibsea. The Inner Harbour is always a very busy place, full of jugglers, street artists and tourists. Great for people watching!

Este es el tercer cuadro que forma parte de la muestra "Visiones de Victoria" en la Academia St. Ann. Es tal vez un estudio para un cuadro más grande. Digo tal vez porque normalmente una vez que hago un cuadro, pierdo el interés por hacerlo de nuevo. Veremos esta vez..... Es una imagen del Puerto Interno en el centro de Victoria. La embarcación blanca es nuestro viejo velero, "Meadowlark", un Gibsea de 33 pies que lo habíamos traído por esa noche. El Puerto Interno es siempre un gran lugar para disfrutar malabaristas, artistas en la calle, turistas y en general bárbaro para simplemente sentarse y mirar a la gente!

I drive around a lot, taking kids to appointments and different things. I drove past this garden several times a few weeks ago and every time I did I said "Oh, I should paint that!" (Like I say several times a day when I am out and about). This one day I actually stopped, put reverse and went back to take the picture. It's a  flower garden in front of this old very plain building, without the flowers I would have never looked at it twice. I love flowers! I have several more paintings planned from this one stop :) 

I took this painting last week to St. Ann's Academy with the "Visions of Victoria" show put on by the Island Illustrators Society. There are gardens and scenes like this galore in Victoria!

Ando en el auto mucho, llevando a los chicos a distintas cosas y demás. Hace unas semanas pasé en frente a este jardín varias veces y cada vez que lo hice dije: "Oh, tengo que pintar eso" (como digo varias veces al día cuando ando dando vueltas). Este día en particular, paré, hice marcha atrás y volví para sacar la foto. Es un jardín de flores en frente a este edificio viejo y muy muy simple, sin las flores esa escena nunca me hubiera llamado la atención. Me encantan las flores! Tengo varias pinturas mas planeadas de esta parada :)

Llevé este cuadro la semana pasada a la St. Ann's Academy para la muestra "Visiones de Victoria" organizada por la Sociedad de Ilustradores de la Isla. Hay jardines y escenas como esta por todos lados en Victoria!
