Layers: 16 of 30

"Layers" - 9x12 - Oil on Birch Panel
"Capas" - Oleo
Marcela Strasdas

This was the second painting of the day in Old Town in Yellowknife,. For this one, my self-imposed assignment was to stay with the big brush. I had been working with brushes that were too small for my liking and everything was getting fiddly for me.  It was all about capturing the rhythm and colours of the rock formations. I stopped as soon as didn't know what else to do to it and I am glad I did. I am somewhat pleased with it, will re-evaluate once back in the studio  :) A dog stopped to visit and pushed the painting on the ground. That's the spots you can see on the sky, dirt..... I was lucky it didn't get totally ruined,  I'll just  wipe it off once the painting is completely dry and touch up if necessary. The joys of plein air.....you never know what you will encounter!

Colour Fun - The Value of Play

"Colour Fun - 8x10 - Acrylic on Canvas
"Diversión en Colores" - 20x25 - Acrílico
NFS

Wow, to say I had fun with this piece is an understatement! I attended a mini workshop with local abstract artist Chin Yuen. She was great! After showing a slide presentation of her own beautiful work, she showed 4 images for a few seconds each. Twice  each image, I think. We were supposed to just draw some gestural lines from it and after that..... just go ahead and start playing with colour, textures, application, thin washes, thick paint, scrapers, etc, etc. The aim was to explore and play with abstraction. Well.... I kind of failed in the abstraction department as mine clearly reads as a landscape but I did play with colour and patterns. I knew I was going into the landscape, being quite literal,  but that is what the painting was telling me so I just went with it! It was very interesting to see how a dozen people who saw the same 4 images for a very short time created COMPLETELY different pieces. I believe that exploring and playing regularly is VERY important  for our own creative process. It helps with not getting stale and bored of doing always the same.  When I take a workshop I never intend to walk away painting like the instructor but rather gain insights, some new, some forgotten, which I can incorporate  into my own practice  and make them mine.  Thank you Chin! It was so much fun and inspiring!

Gracias Chin! Fue muy divertido e interesante!

Burano - #1 of 30

"Burano"- 8x10 - Oil on Panel
"Burano"- 20x25cm - Oleo

Back in the saddle I am! And rusty I am too!! :)

After 5 weeks in Italy and a few weeks on the boat befre and after Itay, I came back home to work on some acrylics that I wanted to have finished for submitting to a show.  With all that, Sep 1 and the start of the Sep 2014 30-day challenge got here before I knew it! I decided to pick a theme (as suggested by Leslie) and it is "Come travel with me" showing images from some of the places I have been to in the last few years. Traveling is for sure a passion of mine; love visiting new places, learning about other cultures and customs. Italy was absolutely gorgeous, everyone should visit it at least once in their lifetime and this is where we begin our travels this month.

First we are stopping at "Burano", one of the islands next to Venice. It is the capital of "lace", all the stores there sell anything lace. But the most interesting thing is that all the houses and boats are painted in extremely bright colours. I was standing taking it all in with a huge smile on my face looking at those houses and all the colour around me!

There are over 600 artists from over 20 countries participating in the challenge this time, go to  http://lesliesaeta.blogspot.ca to see what everyone is producing.

Thanks for stopping by!

On The easel

This is what I have been working on the last few of times I have painted. It was half  way there on the first picture (which is where I started today)  Picture 2 still not finished, have to go back in the there and keep layering. There is still work to do but I am happy with the direction this is going into.  I am enjoying the process very much though. I am using acrylics and painting larger than I have been lately.  This one is 20x24.
Somebody asked me the other day what I listen to while painting and sometimes I listen to music, (most times actually) but lately I have started listening to different talks, podcasts and online radio talk shows. Today and the previous time I have listened to AHA (Artists Helping Artists). It is a show that Leslie Saeta puts on once a week on Thursday mornings and they are all online to listen to at any time. They talk about many different aspects of being an artist. It is very interesting, informative and inspiring.
