The reason I do still-lives like this one or the few previous ones is because doing these studies is a great way of practicing and learning for me. Painting from life, as opposed to painting from photographs, is a very different experience. The camera has already flattened out everything to 2D and it has also corrected the colours so much that you miss a tremendous amount of information when relying just on photos. I didn't use to see this, I often heard more experienced painters state that but at the time, I couldn't see it. Well, after painting from life for a while, I completely agree!  Do yourself a favour, if you are wanting to improve and learn to see differently, set up something, anything, it doesn't matter what it is, shine any light on it and just try to really observe the colours and shapes you see, not what your brain tells you to see. just look and record. You'll be happy with your discoveries. "Clementines" was painted back in January and sold at Calla Design a few weeks ago. Thank you Janice and Sue from Calla!!

La razón por la que hago estas naturalezas muertas como este o los cuadros anteriores es porque por medio de ellos yo puedo estudiar, practicar y aprender. Al pintar cosas que tenemos al frente, opuesto no pintar de fotos, es una experiencia totalmente diferente. La cámara ya ha aplastado todo para que se vea en dos dimensiones y ha corregido también muchos los colores, hay tanto cambio que uno pierde mucha información cuando usa solamente fotos. Hace un tiempo yo no entendía esto del todo,  a menudo escuchaba pintores más con más experiencia decir esto, pero no lo podía ver.  Bueno, después de pintar de cosas que tengo al frente durante un tiempo, estoy totalmente de acuerdo. Hagansé un favor, si quieren mejorar y aprender a ver las cosas de forma diferente, tomen cualquier objeto que les guste, no importa lo que sea, ilumínenlo de alguna forma y realmente traten de observar  las formas y los colores que ven, no los que su cerebro les dice que ven, simplemente miren y pongan esas formas y colores en el lienzo. Van a estar muy contentos con los descubrimientos que hacen. Pinté "Mandarinas"  también en enero y se vendió en Calla Design  hace unas semanas. Muchas gracias Janice y Sue de Calla!

"Gifts" is an oil painting I did back in December I never had the chance to post, so here it goes.  I just LOVE to paint flowers and the best thing is, I can go get fresh bouquets all the time with the excuse that I want to paint them :) Most of the times I do get to it, some other times I just enjoy them!
I've said it before, time flies when you are having fun (or not so much fun sometimes!) I can't believe we are nearing the end of January already!  I disappeared for a while because my daughter came down with a bad case of mono the first week of December and I was playing nurse 24-7 for a few weeks. She even ended up spending a few nights in the hospital, including the day of my 50th birthday, I told her we have to plan better for next year!  Thankfully she is mostly recovered, back at school since beg of January. I am slowly getting caught up with computer work, I have also been busy in the studio finishing work, starting new ones and just getting back into routines.  There's lots of plans for this coming year I'll be sharing in the next few weeks so stay tuned!

Happy 2018!!!! I hope you have had a great start of the year and that the next 365 days offer you all the joy, fulfillment, HEALTH, love and anything else you desire!

"Regalos" es un óleo que hice este Diciembre pasado pero no había tenido la oportunidad de publicarlo, así que aquí va. Cómo me gusta pintar flores y lo mejor de todo es que puedo comprar ramos frescos todo el tiempo con la excusa de que los quiero pintar. ;) La mayoría de las veces si llego a pintarlos, pero otras veces no llego y simplemente los disfruto.

Lo he dicho antes, el tiempo vuela cuando uno se divierte (o no tanta diversión a veces!) No puedo creer que ya estamos cerca de fin de enero! Desaparecí durante un tiempo porque mi hija se enfermó con un caso bastante malo de mononucleosis la primera semana de diciembre y estuve haciendo de enfermera  durante unas cuantas semanas. Hasta llego a pasar unos días en el hospital, incluyendo mi  cumpleaños, le dije que tenemos que hacer mejores planes para el año que viene!! Por suerte, está casi recuperada, de nuevo en la universidad desde el comienzo de enero. Estoy poniéndome al día con las distintas tareas en el taller,  terminando obras, comenzando nuevas y simplemente volviendo a las rutinas diarias. Tengo muchos planes para este año entrante que les voy a contar en las estas próximas semanas.

Feliz 2018!! Espero que hayan tenido un gran comienzo de año y que los próximos 365 días les ofrezcan toda la alegría, logros, SALUD,  amor y todo lo que ustedes desean!

A couple of weeks ago I needed to paint flowers to take a break from all the landscapes I had been painting  so I headed out tot he store, treated myself to a lovely flower bouquet and  have done a few  paintings from it with different lighting, different views, different backgrounds..... still going on repetition of the same thing, just a different subject as you can see. This is one of them and I hope you like it!

Hace un par de semanas, necesitaba pintar flores para tomarme un decsabso de todos los paisajes que he estado pintando asi que me fui al supermercado y me compré un hermos ramo de flores que me ha servido de inspiracion para unos cuantos cuadros: difernetes fondos, diferentes vistas, diferente luz some el ramo. Sigo exploarndo el concepto de repetición, simplemente un tema distinto. Este es un de ellos, espero que les guste!

I'm doing it again.... Will you follow along?

En sus marcas, listos, ya!

Well.... I am at it again..... In a couple of days for the whole month of  September I will be painting a lot!  I have signed up for the 30 in 30 challenge hosted by California Artist Leslie Saeta. I have done it about 5 times in the past, I have never regretted doing it and this is why:

1. When painting intensively like this, I learn something EVERY SINGLE day,  it all builds upon the previous day.
2. The skills I develop have a chance to get stronger with daily practice.
3. The whole process helps me develop habits which are key for improving, an ongoing quest for me.
4. I build up my inventory (even when I don't get a successful painting  every day)
5. I learn a lot about myself, the way I like to work and  the process I follow.
6. It allows for experimentation if that's what you choose to do.
7. It's really exciting when there's over 1000 artists around the world doing the same thing :)
8. I discover new artists that inspire me through visiting the challenge page.

There are probably many more but the main is I feel I really grow as an artist in a short period of time. The reason I officially sign and publicly declare I am participating in it is that it keeps me accountable, once I have announced that I am doing it then there's no turning back..... I have to do it, that's all there is to it.

So in case you are thinking of doing it, here's some unsolicited advice:

• Have all your supplies ready to go before the challenge starts, make sure you have enough of everything
• Pick a theme, it helps with the decision making. You don't really have time every day to think, decide, paint, photograph, blog and post. Make it as easy as possible for yourself. One September for instance, I painted from images of a recent trip to Italy and loved it.  It was like being back there all over again! Last time, I gave myself the freedom to jump back and forth  between landscapes and florals which are the 2 things I really love painting. This time I think I will do the same (not fully decided yet)
• If you are going to be painting from photographs, have well over 30 printed and ready to go so you have options.
• Accept the fact that some of them won't work and that's ok. The first time I did it, I got very stressed out  about it all but I have learnt to keep it light and look at it more as a way of learning than a way to produce 30 masterpieces which is just impossible.
• You can double up, some days you can do 2 in anticipation for a busy day or for catching up. It's not 1 painting a day for 30 days. It's 30 paintings in 30 days. In one of the last challenges, I actually started painting a few days of days before Sep 1 so I had a couple of the bag once we got going. I already know this year I will be traveling for part of it (more on that soon, I am going  on a painting trip to the Arctic!!!!!!!) so I need to be quite diligent before leaving to make sure I have enough paintings. I may not be able to post every single day but that's ok.
• Remember that you can make your own rules!! whatever they are, they are yours and there's no point in getting stressed over it all
• Have fun and connect!

Y bueno....aquí ando de nuevo por meterme en lios..... Voy a pintar mucho durante todo el mes de septiembre! Me he anotado en el Desafío de 30 Cuadros en 30 Días organizado por Leslie Saeta, una artista deCaliforna. Ya lo hecho varias veces, nunca me he arrepentido y es por estas razones:

1. Al pintar de forma intemsiva se aprende algo nuevo todos los días, todo se construye sobre lo aprendido el día anterior.
2. Lo que aprendo a diario se fortalecese con la práctica diaria.
3. El proceso entero me ayuda a desarrollar hábitos que son clave para mejorar, una de las cosas que yo tengo como meta.
4. Aumento mi inventario, aún cuando no todos los cuadros resultan. 
5. Me familiarizo mucho con todos mis materiales, por ejemplo encuentro cuáles son los pinceles que me gustan y cuales no. 
6. Aprendo mucho sobre mi misma, la forma en que me gusta trabajar y el proceso que sigo. 
7. Me permite experimentar si es eso lo que quiero hacer. 
8. Se crea un cierto entusiasmo cuando hay más de 1000 artistas en todo el mundo que están haciendo lo mismo. 
9. Cuando veo lo que  el sitio del desafío, Descubro artistas nuevos que me inspiran cuando visito la pagina del Desafio
   

Probablemente hay muchas otras razones para hacerlo pero lo más importante es que creo que realmente crezco mucho como artista en un período de tiempo muy corto. La razón por la que me anoto oficialmente y lo declaro públicamente es que de esta forma me obligo hacerlo, una vez que lo he anunciado, no me puedo volver atrás… Tengo que hacerlo, si o si.

Acá les doy algunos consejos en caso de que ustedes estén pensando en unirse y hacerlo: 

• Tengan todos las a materiales listos antes de que comience el desafío, asegúrense de tener suficiente de todo.
• Pueden elegir un tema, esto ayuda con las decisiones de qué pintar todos los días. No hay tiempo realmente todos los días para pensar, decidir, pintar, fotografiar, escribir en el blog, y publicar. Traten de hacerlo todo de la forma más fácil para ustedes mismos. Un septiembre por ejemplo, yo pinté todo el mes imágenes de un viaje reciente a Italia y me encantó. Fue como volver a estar de de viaje. La última vez me dí la libertad de ir y venir entre paisajes y flores que son las dos cosas que realmente me gusta pintar. Esta vez creo que voy a hacer lo mismo aunque todavía no me he decidido. 
• Si van a usar fotos como referencia  tengan más de 30 fotos imprimidas y listas para poder tener opciones. 
• Acepten el hecho de que algunos días las cosas no van a funcionar, los cuadros no van a ser buenos. La primera vez que lo hice, me estresé mucho con todo pero ahora siempre trato de recordar que es mas que nada una forma de practicar y aprender más que producir 30 piezas maestras, lo cual es simplemente imposible. 
• Pueden hacer dos o mas cuadros en el mismo día por ejemplo en anticipación de un día con muchas cosas que hacer. No es una pintura al día durante 30 días sino que son 30 cuadros dentro de 30 días. En uno de los últimos desafíos, empecé a pintar unos días antes del 1 de septiembre para de esa manera ya tener unos cuantos hechos antes de que empezáramos. Sé que este año por ejemplo voy a estar de viaje en el mes de septiembre (Les voy a contar más de esto pronto... me voy a pintar al Artico!!!!!)  por lo que tengo que estar bien organizada para asegurarme de tener suficientes pinturas. Se que tal vez no pueda publicar todos los días. 
• Recuerden de que pueden poner sus propias reglas. Sea lo que sea, son sus reglas y no tiene sentido estresarse con todo esto.

This plum tree is actually not on my yard but we enjoy a few branches that come over the fence from the neighbours' yard, I think we even got to enjoy some plums last year.... the shame is that they don't pick them!!
This painting will be among the new pieces I will share with you at the 2017 Hills to Shore Artists Tour on May 13&14, 11 to 4 pm, rain or shine, hoping for shine. My home studio at 3876A Finnerty Rd., It's the house at the end of the long driveway!! Hope to see you then!

Este ciruelo no está en mi patio sino en la casa de un vecino pero podemos disfrutamos de varias ramas que van por arriba de la cerca. Creo que el verano pasado hasta cosechamos algunas ciruelas.... es un apena que los dueños no las comen!!
Este va a ser uno de los cuadros que voy a mostrar durante el Tour de Talleres el 13 y 14 de Mayo de 11 a 4, esperemos tener buen tiempo :)  El taller en mi casa, Calle Finnerty 3876A, la tercera casa desde la calle! Espero verlos!

Spring has been late to Victoria this year but it looks like it's finally here! For the last several weeks I have been painting flowers from my garden and Spring scenes I  see everywhere in the city.  At the very start the season I can enjoy from my bedroom and bathroom windows the most beautiful sight of an ornamental cherry tree in bloom..... it's a huge pink mass that puts a smile on my face every single time I sew it! One day a couple of weeks ago I cut a few blossoms, brought them up to the studio to be my subject and enjoyed its smell until the petals just withered and fell off ..... I love spring and witnessing everything starting to grow!

 La primavera está lerda en llegar a Victoria este año pero parece que finalmente está aquí! Estas últimas semanas he estado pintando flores de mi jardín y escenas primaverales que encuentro por toda la ciudad. Al comienzo de la temporada siempre puedo disfrutar  desde las ventanas de mi baño y mi dormitorio una vista hermosísima de un cerezo ornamental en flor, es una masa rosada increíble que me hace sonreir cada vez que lo veo! Esta es una de las primeras señales de que finalmente el invierno se está acabando. Ese día hace unas semanas corté unas cuantas ramas, las traje al taller para pintarlas y disfrute de su aroma hasta que los pétalos se secaron y cayeron… Como me gusta la primavera y observar como todo comienza a crecer!

After getting back home to the studio I was interested in doing a few paintings with those gorgeous colours I fell in love with in Mexico and Hawaii but following a bit of different approach from the one I normally use, just to play and see if I liked it better. One of the traditional approaches to oils is to cover the whole canvas or panel very thinly with one colour which becomes the base layer,  and in many cases it peeks through  the whole painting here and there when it is not 100% covered. This is what I love that about this approach, it gives the painting unity and a general feel.  This is how I learned when I first started with oils and did it that way for quite a while. Later on I took a workshop where I learned a different approach: You apply an underpainting of many different transparent colours, those colours depend on what you are painting and this is followed by opaque colours on top. Again, lots of the underpaiting still shows in the final product. I liked this way because I was able to achieve brighter cleaner colours as many times the white from the canvas/panel is "shines" through the bottom transparent colours. The previous landscapes and seascapes I have been showing you these past weeks have been done using this last method and "Tropical memories" today was done using the traditional way...... Which one do you prefer???
In the end, in this case, this exercise didn't help me make up my mind..... I liked both ways..... :)

 Después de volver y empezar a trabajar en el taller, estaba muy interesada en hacer unos cuantos cuadros usando esos colores hermosísimos de los que me enamoré cuando estaba en México y en Hawai pero quería hacer un par de experimentos al aplicar los óleos, simplemente para jugar y ver si me gustaba más . Una de las formas tradicionales de usar los óleos es primero cubrir toda la superficie del lienzo o panel con una capa muy fina de un color que se transforma en la base,  en muchos casos este color aparece en distintos lugares del cuadro cuando no se cubre  el 100%. Esto es lo que más me gusta de este método, ya que le da  al cuadro mucha uniformidad. Éste fue la forma en que yo aprendí a usar los óleos y lo hice así durante bastante tiempo. Más adelante tomé un curso en el qie aprendí una  forma diferente: se aplica una base con muchos colores diferentes transparentes, la eleccioón de colores depende de lo que se está pintando y esa capa se sigue con colores opacos encima. Como en el caso anterior, muchas partes de la base se pueden ver en el cuadro si no se cubren el 100% . La razón por la que me gusta este método es porque puedo lograr  colores más limpios y brillantes.  Todos los paisajes que le estado mostrando últimamente han sido pintados utilizando este último método y el de hoy es utilizando el método tradicional … Cuál prefieren? Al final, en este caso, este ejercicio no me ayudó a decidirme cuál me gusta más… Me gusta de las dos formas… :)

Traveling is one my hot buttons, I love it, I love all about it. Discovering new places and cultures is pretty special. I'm finding that traveling with my paints and recording what I see adds a different dimension to it all. It helps me remember the place in a different way. For instance, this is the sunset I remember the most from our recent trip to Maui, Hawaii, probably because not only it was our first evening there but also because of the fact that I really looked at how it developed while I painted it.... The thing with sunsets is that they change VERY quickly as the sun is going down so you need to pick a few things that call your attention first and then you need to stick to those! Otherwise it's very easy to get confused with the lights and darks  and the whole scene overall. The reflections for instance changed from orange to purple to blue back to orange all in a matter of minutes! We must take certain decisions and stay on that path..... (This goes for so much of plein air painting....)
This painting is called "Happy Hour" because it was painted at that time..... we started the tradition of watching the sunset on our "lanai" (deck) with a Mai Tai in hand.... Yum! (Hawaian typical drink, you can check out the recipe in the link if you want to try it, without grenadine though).

 El viajar es una de mis pasiones, me encanta todo lo relacionado con el viajar. Descubrir lugares y culturas nuevas es algo muy especial. Estoy descbubriendo que el poder viajar con mis pinturas y registrar todo lo que veo en un cuadro  agrega una dimensión distinta al viaje. Me ayuda a recordar cada lugar de forma diferente. Por ejemplo, este es el atardecer que más recuerdo de nuestro reciente  viaje a Maui, Hawai, probablemente no sólo porque fue nuestra primera noche ahí si no también porque realmente lo miré con mucha atención mientras lo pintaba… La cosa con los atardeceres es que cambian muy rápidamente a medida que el sol baja por lo cual es necesario elegir unas pocas cosas que llaman la atención de entrada y es necesario registrar esas cosas sin cambiar de historia! Los reflejs en el agua por ejemplo cambiaron de naranja a violeta a azul, de nuevo a naranja, todo en una cuestión de minutos, no podemos pintar todo y debemos tomar ciertas decisiones y seguir en esa dirección. (esto se aplica en tanatas instancias cuando se pinta al aire libre....)

Este cuadro se llama "Happy Hour" porque lo pinté a esa hora..... empezamos una tradición nueva mientras miramos el atardecer en nuestro la "lanai" (balcón) con un   Mai Tai en la mano… hmmm....  que rico, (bebida típica de Hawaii... acá tienen la receta si lo quieren probar,  pero sin granadina).

I was fortunate to spend a week in Mexico this past February, I took my paints, managed to do a few on site and this is one of them..... I was completely fascinated with the colour of the water..... If I had a penny for each time I said or thought "Wow! Look at that colour!!!" I would probably have enough money to go back to Mexico!!

Absolutely gorgeous colour, always changing according to how the sun is hitting it which of course added to the fun of attempting to paint it.  This is the beginning of a lot of turquoise coming out of my studio! :) Hope you enjoy it!

Tuve la suerte de pasar una semana en México este pasado febrero. Llevé mis pinturas y logré hacer algunos cuadros durante esa semana. Este es uno de ellos… Estuve todo el tiempo completamente fascinada con el color del agua… Si yo tuviera 1 centavo por cada vez que dije o pensé "Wow!! Qué color!!!" probablemente tendría suficiente plata como para volver a México!!

Un color tan hermoso, siempre cambiando de acuerdo a cómo está el sol, lo cual por supuesto agregó un poco de diversión al tratar de pintarlo. Este es el comienzo de mucho turquesa que sale de mi de mi taller.  Espero que les guste!

Day 8 of 30: January Morning

Now on to something completely different for a change of pace! One of my goals for the last few months has been to get out to do more plein air work so I have cleared up Fridays and I am going out painting, rain or shine!   I have gone out with the Al Frescoes before, I am joining them again. They are a group that gathers every Friday Morning in different parts of the city and paint or draw.  At noon, everyone gathers, there's a bit of show and tell and shared packed lunch. It is really nice to see other people's work and meet new artists.  Today, it was very flat and grey but I persevered and in the end I ended up with an alright sketch. Of course, now that I took the photo and uploaded it I already see some changes that need to be done. Will get to them in the next few days.  We started at 9 something and by 11 I couldn't feel my fingers anymore and by 12 my toes were gone as well!  It was absolutely wonderful to get in the warm car when we were done!  Next time I'll remembre to take some pics of us painting! :)

Acá vamos con algo completamente diferente!! Una de mis metas estos últimos meses ha sido salir más a pintar al aire libre así es que he marcado todos los viernes del calendario y voy a salir a pintar, llueve o truene!! He ido con un grupo llamado los Al Frescoes en el pasado y voy a empezar a salir con ellos. Son un grupo que se junta todos los viernes en distintas partes de la ciudad y pintan o dibujan.  Al mediodia todos se reúnen, se muestra lo que se hizo esa mañana y se comparte el almuerzo que cada uno a traído. Es muy bueno salir y juntarse con otros artistas, conocer a nuevos. Hoy todo estaba muy muy gris pero seguí adelante y terminé con un bosquejo aceptable. Por supuesto, apenas le saco foto y lo subo aca, veo algunas cosas que tengo que cambiar, lo haré en estos próximos días.  Empezamos a las 9 y pico, a las 11 ya no sentía los dedos de las manos y a las 12 ya no sentía los dedos de los pies tampoco! Fue absolutamente maravilloso sentarnos en el auto caliente  a la vuelta! La próxima vez voy a tratar de acordarme de sacar fotos mas fotos. 

No me gusta la mayoría de lo que pinto al aire libre,  pero el proceso es lo que importa,
sé que me va a ayudar a que sea una mejor pintora. (Gaye Adams)

I have been opening boxes with Xmas decorations and I found these little angels I have had  forever. They are made of fabric and it is a string of them except that a few years ago the string broke and I have meaning to fix it as  I just can't part with them. Anyway,  I set them up in my still life section and I love them! I like how one of them is kind of holding the other up, just like when best friends lift each other up when in need. Hope you like them!


I've been wanting to write about this for a while: How to keep up with reading the blogs you love?? About six/seven  years ago I didn't quite know what a blog was. I remember asking a friend and she tried to explain the concept and how it worked but it was pretty confusing for me at the time anyway. Fast forward a few years and now it's hard to believe I have published over 200 blog posts myself! Nowadays blogs is one of the main sources of inspiration for me, I read them daily and I follow people I admire and respect. It can be daunting though to try to remember to go to everyone's blogs or to get them in email format, we all get enough emails everyday! To make my life easier I use an app that makes it very simple to stay on top of all of them. That App is free and called FEEDLY.  Basically I just add blogs I like  to my list, I  can categorize them if I want to and it produces a reading list for me and I can read it at my leisure. I just read that you can add publications and YouTube channels as well as blogs (I learn something new everyday!)  That is actually how I start my day: sipping coffee in bed, getting inspired and learning from artists all over the world. I actually set up my alarm clock an hour earlier than I have to get up in order to have enough "me" time.

He estado abriendo cajas de adornos de Navidad y encontré estos angelitos  que hace un montón que los tengo. Son de tela, están unido por hilo grueso que hace algunos año se rompió  y lo tengo que arreglar. La cosa es que los puse en mi zona de naturaleza muertas  y me encantan!! Me gusta como uno es como que lo está levantando al otro de la misma forma que los amigos se apoyan en momentos de necesidad. Espero que les gusten!

Hace rato que quiero  escribir sobre esto: Como poder estar al tanto de todos los blog que te encantan?? Hace seis/siete años ni sabía lo que era un blog. Me acuerdo que una amiga trató de explicarme cómo funcionaban y la verdad es  que no lo entendí muy bien. Hacé para adelante unos cuantos años y me parece increíble que ya he publicado mas de 200 posts! Actualmente los blogs son una de las principales formas de inspiración para mí, los leo a diario y sigo a artistas que admiro y respeto.  Pero  puede ser difícil acordarse de todos o puede ser demasiado recibirlos a todos en tu email. Para simplificarme la vida, uso una app que se llama  FEEDLY.  Basicamente, agrego los blogs que me interesan a mi lista, puedo organizarlos en categorías y cuando se publican me entran automaticamente  a mis lista de lectura. Acabo de leer que se pueden agregar no sólo blogs sino publicaciones de cualquier tipo y canales de YouTube también. Aprendo algo nuevo todos los días! Es así como empiezo mi día todos los días. Tomando café en la cama, inspirándome y aprendiendo de artistas de todo el mundo. Me pongo el despetador una hora antes de tener que levantarme para asegurame de tener suficiente tiempo para "mi".


Cómo empezás el día y cómo te mantenes al tanto con toda la lectura??

In the last few months (maybe years actually),  I have come across a few blogs that have been very inspiring for me, they are making me want to get into trouble and by that I mean more action! I am feeling like committing to some structure and hard work after the last 10 months of family health challenges, daughter graduating and moving to a different house (I am happy to report that most of the boxes are already unpacked, just a few here and there left to do,  it is starting to look and feel more like home and my son is doing great :)

One of the blogs I am talking about is Crystal Moody's blog. She did last year "365 Days of Creative Habits" and is now on a "360 Days of Creative Habits". After last year's experience she decided to give herself  5 grace days! I love reading her insights, she is awesome at sharing with us lots of her process thinking and the discoveries she makes along the way, not technical painting information but more about the experiences she is going through.

The Daily Painting Movement,  Carol Marine and so many others that embraced this practice have also influenced the direction I am taking.

What I am interested in most of all  is the growth I know occurs when you do projects and practices like these. I know that with continued action I will grow as an artist which is ultimately my goal, to be a better painter each day.   I love learning and discovering and want to dig deeper into my art. So this is the why.

I was trying to figure out how to go about it all. Do I set some rules for myself? How many days a week do I want to put in? Do I count days or works? Only paintings count? Do drawings and sketches also count?

This is what I DO know:  I am interested in exploring some new media, drawing more, doing more painting from life, doing more plein air painting, doing small paintings as well as larger paintings to create new bodies of work. I don't want to get boxed into guidelines set by others (only paintings, or only drawings for example), I know I'll feel them constricting and they would take the fun away.

So...... what I have decided is .... drum roll.....  I am committing publicly (this is a big one for me, when I commit publicly, then I have to do it, right?) to doing in one year 260 days of creating. It can be anything from a 5 minute line drawing to a large acrylic piece done over several days. That is 5 days a week.   I don't need to spend 8 hours in the studio everyday if I don't have that time (or inspiration) but I have to at least do a 5 min drawing in those days that life just takes over. It will be fun to see at the end of it all where I am and how much work I have produced. I may not post absolutely everything I paint, draw, sketch because sometimes they may just not work out but I'll post more regularly that I have lately :)

En estos últimos meses (o años mejor dicho), he recibido mucha inspiración de ciertos blogs que leo a diario y me han dado ganas de meterme en problemas; con esto quiero decir ponerme en acción! Siento que necesito comprometerme a tener cierta estructura y trabajo duro después de los últimos meses de problemas de salud con la familia, hija que se graduó y se mudó a otra ciudad para estudiar y una mudanza para nosotros! (Estoy contenta con poder contarles que ya casi no quedan cajas sin desarmar, ya va tomando mas pinta de hogar y mis dos hijos están muy bien!)

Uno de los blogs a los que me refiero es el de Crystal Moody. Ella  hizo el año pasado"365 Días Hábitos Creativos". y este año en "360 Días de Hábitos Creativos". Después de la experiencia del año pasado ella decidió darse 5 días de gracia! Me encanta leer sus reflexiones diarias, ella es muy buena en compartir sus procesos, ideas y descubrimientos que está haciendo en el camino, no información técnica sobre cómo pintar si no mas con respecto a las experiencias que tiene en este proyecto.

El Grupo de "Una Pintura Diaria", Carol Marine y muchos otros artistas que admiro han incorporado esta práctica y  han sido una gran influencia en la dirección que quiero ir.
Lo que más me interesa es el crecimiento que ocurre cuando uno hace proyectos y prácticas de este tipo. Sé que con acción continua voy a crecer como artista que es mi meta,  ser una artista mejor cada día. Me encanta aprender y descubrir!
He estado tratando de decidir cómo hacerlo. Me pongo reglas? Cuantos días por semana quiero comprometer? Cuento días o pinturas? Sólo pinturas o dibujos y bosquejos también?
Esto es lo que sé: Estoy interesada en explorar medios nuevos, quiero dibujar mas, pintar de cosas reales (no de fotos) y en plein-air, quiero hacer pinturas pequeñas pero también quiero hacer piezas mas grandes y desarrollar series. No quiero encajonarme en reglas establecidas por otros (sólo pinturas o sólo dibujos por ejemplo), se que me van a sofocar y sacarían el placer de este proyecto. Asi que lo que he decidido es que ..... tatatatan.....  me comprometo públicamente (y esto es importante para mi, si lo hago público, lo tengo que hacer a la fuerza no?) a hacer  en un año 260 días de creación. Puede ser un dibujo simple o una pintura grande terminada en varios días. Esto es 5 días a la semana, no hace falta que este en mi taller 8 horas por día si no tengo tiempo (o inspiración) pero tengo que por lo menos hacer un bosquejo de 5 minutos. Va a ser muy gratificante ver al final del año lo que he logrado. Tal vez no ponga todo en el blog pero si voy a poner cosas mas a menudo de lo que he estado publicando ultimamente. 

Que les parece?? Alguien me quiere acompañar y hacer algo, poniendo sus propias reglas?? Sería muy bueno tener compañía!!

The second day of he workshop was much better for me, I was happier with what I made, even when I didn't get the punch I  really wanted. I just have to keep practicing!  What can I call this painting? Help!!
Three more days and the big move day is here, off to keep packing! Happy Wednesday!

El segundo día del curso fue mucho mejor para mi, estuve mucho mas contenta con lo que produje, aún cuando no logré lo que realmente tenía en mente. Hay que seguir practicando! Qué nombre le puedo dar a este cuadro? 
Quedan 3 días antes de la mudanza, me voy a seguir armando cajas! Espero que disfruten de este Miércoles!

These past few days I attended Gaye Adams workshop and on the first day I had an OMG! moment: Am I out of "artistic" shape or what? The workshop was on Daily Painting and it is a practice I want to adhere more to. I believe that practice makes perfect (or better in my case)  and the more we do anything  the more capable and proficient we get at it. For the last year and a bit it has all been about putting in the milage for me, I have seen growth but I am nowhere close to where I want to be. Painting from life is much harder than painting from photographs, it teaches you to really SEE. I didn't like what I painted Friday, this a just cropping of what I do like about it. Moving day is getting close (next Saturday) and after that I will be able to focus a lot more on my goals as an artist.

Estos últimos días estuve en un curso con Gaye Adams y el primer día fue de revelación: Oh mi dios, estoy fuera de forma "artística" o qué? El curso fue sobre "Pinturas  Diarias" y es una práctica a la que me quiero adherir mas. Creo que la práctica lleva a la perfección (o a la mejoría en mi caso)  y cuanto más hacemos algo, mas capacitados estamos. Este último año pasado me dediqué a poner  muchas horas en el pincel y he visto crecimiento pero no estoy ni cerca de donde quiero estar. Pintar de la vida real es mucho más difícil que pintar de fotos, te enseña a VER realmente. No me gustó lo que pinté el viernes, este es un pedazo solamente de la parte que me gusta.  El día de la mudanza se acerca, (este sábado que viene), después de ese día voy a poder  dedicarme mas a mis metas artísticas.

2014 30 in 30!

Some of you may know that last September I participated in an online challenge called "30 Paintings in 30 Days". Last year I discovered the world of blogs at some point and started following some artists whose work I liked or found inspiring. I had come across Leslie Saeta's blog and watched with envy artists taking part in a challenge in January. Oh, how I wished I could do it! But of course, in my mind there was no way I would be able to do it for so many reasons, time being number one. But the stars and planets aligned and last September when I saw it was coming up again, I talked my friend Sharlene Stushnov Lee into doing it with me, took the plunge and I signed up for it (scared to death of not being able to follow through)!!  As a side note I should add that my painting had taken the back seat when I got very involved in getting an Art Centre off the ground 5 years before (Visit Coast Collective to see what ended  up looking like, very proud of what we accomplished!!)

This challenge was the best thing I did for myself and my art. It got me excited and working! Painting on a daily basis allowed me to learn every single day about myself, my artwork and the processes I was using. It built confidence and I am very excited about doing it again. I will miss the first couple of days of it as I will be in transit getting back to Canada from our trip to Argentina but it will be fine! I will double up on some other days and I will do another 30 in 30 this coming up January. I know there are more local people that talked about doing it with us and that will be lots of fun! Can't wait to be in the thick  of it again!

Algunos de uds. saben que este Septiembre pasado paticipé en un desafío online que se llamaba "30 pinturas en 30 días". El año pasado descubrí el mundo  de los blogs en algún momento y empecé a seguir a varios artistas que me gustaba su trabajo o eran fuente de inspiración. Encontré así el blog de Leslie Saeta y miré con envidia como artistas participaban en un desafío durante el mes de Enero. Oh, como deseaba estar haciéndolo también! Pero por supuesto en mi mente yo no podía hacerlo, especialmente debido a la falta de tiempo. Pero todos los planetas y las estrellas se alinearon y este septiembre pasado ví que se venía otro desafío, la convencí a mi amiga Sharlene Stushnov Lee a que lo hiciera conmigo, me animé y me anoté para hacerlo (muerta de miedo de no poder terminar) Deberia agregar que mi pintura había pasado a segundo plano 5 años anteriores cuando fui parte del comienzo de un Centro de Arte (Visite Coast Collective para ver en qué resultó eso, lago de lo que etsoy muy orgullosa).

Este desafío fue lo mejor que hice para mi y mi arte. Me entusiasmó y me puso en acción. Al pintar  de forma diaria, aprendí todos los días sobre mí misma, mi trabajo y los procesos que seguía. Me ayudó a  tener confianza y estoy entusiasmada con hacerlo de nuevo.  Voy a perder los primeros días porque voy a estar en tránsito volviendo de Argentina a Canadá pero me las voy a arreglar. Voy a tener que hacer 2 en algunos otros días para poder completar 30 pinturas en 30 días de nuevo. Se que hay más amigos y gente local que  van a participar esta vez y nos vamos a divertir. Estoy ansiosa por comenzar y estar en el medio del baile!
