"Marina Office" was started last year as a plein air session at Goldstream Boathouse Marina close to Goldstream Park. I remember it was a windy morning but still very pleasant. I liked what had happened on this painting while outdoors and I went back to it  a couple of other times this past year to try and finish it. The trick with lots of plein air work for me is not to lose the freshness of the plein air sketch. I managed to finish it in time for the studio tour last weekend and I am glad to say this painting found a home! Enjoy it Mark and Jill! (The painting I think is much better than the photo here,  had lots of trouble trying to get a good image and int he end this is the best one)

Speaking of the tour, it was a huge success. Had lots of guests, several paintings found new homes, got a couple of commissions and I really enjoyed myself. Ended the weekend with a great dinner out for Mother's Day and I have been recovering from the work to get ready and playing catch up since then.

Empecé "Oficina de la Marina"  el año pasado en una sesión al aire libre en la Marina de Goldstream cerca del parque Goldstream. Recuerdo que era una mañana muy agradable pero con un poco de brisa. Me gustó bastante lo que estaba pasando en este cuadro mientras estaba en la marina y una vez en el taller volví a tratar de terminarlo un par de veces este año pasado. El truco para mí con muchos de los trabajos que hago afuera es tratar de no perder la espontaneidad del bosquejo inicial al aire libre cuando trato de terminarlo en el taller. Lo terminé al final a tiempo para el Tour de Talleres del fin de semana pasado y me alegro de contarles que este cuadro encontró un  hogar nuevo, gracias Mark y Jill, espero que lo disfruten! (El cudaro es mejor que la foto del cuadro, me costó mucho tratar de sacar una buena foto y al final, esta es la mejor)

Hablando del tour, fue un gran éxito. Tuve muchas visitas, varios cuadros encontraron un nuevos hogares, tengo varios encargos ahora  y la verdad es que  lo disfruté mucho. Terminé el fin de semana con una gran cena afuera por el día de la madre y hace desde entonces que estoy tratando de  recuperarme de todo el trabajo y ponerme al día.

This was started back at the beginning of Spring when I went painting at Goldstream Marina  just outside of Goldstream Park.... most people don't even know this marina is there, tucked out of sight from the highway. It has a great collection of old boats and beautiful views but that day I opted to paint the marina office as I loved its colour.  Painted with Madelaine Ross, Brian Bolli and Charlie Spratt, (Charlie, come back to visit and paint with us!!) Thank you all for a great day!
I may still go back into this painting but for now, it rests. I'll for sure get a better image, I have been having great challenges in getting accurate colours, no glare, etc, etc in the photos I am taking. Always learning something new,  (or having to!)

Empecé este cuadro al comienzo de la primavera cuando fui a pintar a la Marina Goldstream que está afuera del Parque Goldstream… La mayoría de la gente ni siquiera sabe que esta marina esta ahí, escondida y fuera de la vista desde la autopista. Tiene una gran colección de viejas embarcaciones y vistas hermosas pero ese día yo elegí pintar la oficina de la Marina ya que me encantó su color. Pinté con Madelaine Ross, Brian Bolli y Charlie Spratt.  Charlie, volvé a visitarnos y a pintar con nosotros. Gracias a todos por un día muy bueno! Tal vez vuelva a retocar este cuadro pero por ahora descansa, tengo que seguro sacar una mejor foto, he estado teniendo grandes problemas en tratar de sacar fotos con colores adecuados, sin brillo, etc. Siempre aprendiendo algo nuevo!

 On Friday I went painting with the Alfrescoes after a long time of not being there, it was so nice to see many friendly faces :) We went to Westbay Marina in Esquimalt and the reflections early when we got there were just incredible! I took many photos for hopefully future paintings. The major challenge I had was the wind that picked up and got rid of the crystal clear reflections that attracted me to paint this scene in the first place. I am glad I had taken a photo at the beginning and was able to go back into it once back in the studio. It was for sure a matter of getting rid of the many marks I had added when it was windier.
The fact that we went to that marina on Friday was very timely because I have been invited to participate in this year's Art Gallery House Tour. Every year, a few special home in Victoria are picked and people can go and visit them.  There are artists in each of these homes. My "home" for today, Sunday Sep 11,   is a float home in this Marina actually. I'll be at #5 - 453 Head St in Esquimalt. Get a ticket, come down and visit this very special home. I was there on Friday and wow! They have the most amazing  views!

El viernes fui a pintar con los Alfrescoes después de no haber ido por bastante tiempo, fue tan bueno ver muchas caras sonrientes! Fuimos a la Marina Westbay en Esquimalt y los reflejos en el agua  temprano cuando llegamos eran increíbles! Tomé bastantes fotos para tal vez hacer cuadros en el futuro.  El mayor problema que tuve fue el viento que después de un rato se levantó y borró totalmente los reflejos perfectos que era lo que primero me había atraído de pintar esta escena. Me alegro de haber tomado una foto al comienzo y pude retocar este cuadro y corregirlo un poco una vez que volví a casa. Se trató principalmente de sacar muchas pinceladas que había agregado cuando se levantó el viento. El hecho de que fuimos a esa marina fue bastante oportuno porque me han invitado a participar en el Tour de Casas de este año organizado por la Galería de Arte de Victoria. Todos los años se eligen unos pocos hogares especiales en Victoria y la gente puede ir a visitarlos. Hay artistas en cada una de estas casas. Mi "casa" hoy, Domingo 11 de Septiembre, es una casa flotante en la marina. Voy a estar en  #5 - 453 Head St in Esquimalt. Vengan, compren una entrada y pasen a visitar esta casa muy especial. Estuve allí el viernes y wow!, tienen vistas increíbles por todos lados!

Reflections (#86 of 100) and Happy Dance!!

I am very, very happy to announce that "the big monster" I have been working on got accepted into Sooke Fine Arts this year!! Yes!!! Big smile!! I am doing a happy dance!! Sooke Fine Arts is one the biggest juried shows on Vanvouver Island and it was one of my goals to submit to it this year. I only say "submit to" and not "get in" as a goal because you never know with juried art shows; I did my part, put the work in (and it took a few hours!) and I am very happy with the acceptance!

I had started this canvas a few years ago and due to lack of time had never finished it. It is the largest piece I have worked on (48x60) and I learnt a ton in the process. This canvas had a mind of its own from the get go, I wanted it to go in a certain direction and things wouldn't work, so after much frustration  several times  I said to myself: "Stop fighting it, this is the way this one will be".  It has a much more realistic look than I wanted it to have.

My new found love from this painting is Cadmium Orange. It gave me the "warm glow" I was after in some areas when mixed with Dioxazine Purples and different amounts of white and/or ultramarine blue.

The show runs July 25 to August 4 at Seaparc Leisure Centre in Sooke and unfortunately I won't be in town for it, (we are going to Italy!!!! Yes, I know, bummer eh?) Put it on your calendars and be sure to stop by if you can!

Estoy muy, muy contenta de poder anunciar que "el monstruo" en el que he estado trabajando duro ha sido aceptado en la muestra Sooke Fine Arts este año!! Si!!! Gran sonrisa acá!!  Bailecito de alegría!! Esta es una de las muestras juradas más grandes en la Isla de Vancouver y era una de mis metas presentar algo para ser considerado para la exhibición. Noten que sólo digo "presentar" y no "ser aceptada" como meta ya que uno nunca sabe con las muestras juradas; yo hice mi parte, trabajé mucho (y me llevó bastantes horas!) y estoy muy contenta con la aceptación!

Había comenzado este lienzo hace muchos años y por falta de tiempo nunca lo había terminado. Es la pieza más grande que he echo y aprendí muchísimo en el proceso. Este lienzo tomó sus propias decisiones desde el comienzo. Yo quería llevar las cosas en cierta dirección y no salían para nada así que después de mucha frustración algunos días me dije: "Dejá de luchar, este va a ser de este modo". Es mucho más realista de lo que yo quería. 

Un nuevo amor que encontré en este cuadro es el Naranja Cadmin. Me dió el "reflejo cálido" que buscaba cuando lo mezclaba con Morado Dioxazine y diferentes cantidades de blanco y/o Azul Ultramarino. 

La muestra es desde el 25 de julio hasta el 4 de agosto en el Centro de Recreation Seaparc en Sooke  y desafortunadamente no voy a estar en Victoria para esa fecha (Vamos a Italia!!! Si, ya sé, que lastima que vamos a Italia no? ) Marquen la fecha en sus calendarios y pasen a verla si pueden!
