YAY ME!!!! - 27 of 260 done!

So, Yesterday Oct 25 marked 30 calendar days from the start of my 260 Days of Art Making Project and am I excited about it all or what!!????

This is what happened (I LOVE counting and being able to quantify this way!)
- I created 27 days out of 30
- I blogged and posted on social media consistenly for the whole month.

- Finished 10 small paintings from plein air or from photographs

- Did 4 small paintings from life

- Wiped one plein air

- Did 4 zentangles

- Did 4 drawings/illustrations

- Did 2 drawings/sketches

- Did 3 mixed media projects 

I am so so happy with everything I got to do this past month. It's time now to take a look and see if I want to change anything or not to make things work better.  The one thing I will change is I'll go down to posting 3 times a week instead of 5 (it takes me a long tome to get each post ready to publish!)  I also want to tackle some bigger works and go out to do more plein air. I am VERY excited to see what next brings :) I haven't posted all the images you see in the collage, will get to that in the next few posts.

Ayer marqué 30 días de calendario desde que comencé el proyecto de 260 Días de Hacer Arte y estoy tan contenta!!

Esto fue lo que ocurrió:

- Creé arte 27 días de los 30.

- Escribí el blog y en medios sociales de forma consistente todo el mes.
- Terminé 10 cuadros de fotos o empezados al aire libre

- Hice 4 cuadros  de naturalezas muertas en el taller.

- Borré un cuadro que hice al aire libre. 

- Hice 4 zentangles

- Hice 4 dibujos/ilustraciones

- Hice 2 dibujos/bosquejos
- Hice 3 trabajos de media mezclada.

Estoy tan tan contenta y satisfecha con todo lo que logré hacer este mes pasado. Ahora es tiempo de ver qué funcionó y qué no funcionó para hcer los cambios necesarios. Lo que ya se que voy a cambiar es voy a escribir  en este blog 3 veces por semana en lugar de 5 (escribir cada blog me lleva mucho tiempo normalmente). Quiero además hacer algunas piezas de mayor tamaÑo y quiero pintar al aire libre más a menudo. Estoy  MUY entusiasmada con  ver qué logro este mes  que viene!! :)

No he publicado todas las imágenes que ven en el collage de arriba, voy a publicarlas en los próximos posts.

Morning Walk

There is nothing like a morning walk in the woods enjoying the sounds, the smells and the colour. Again,  just like the last one,  this one is inspired by Goldstream Park which is very close to Victoria, only about 20 minutes by car. I am very fortunate to live where I do, there is beauty  everywhere year round :)

Painting this one was interesting. I started painting without a clear plan of attack, (may not have been the best idea but....), I just knew I didn't want to get really tight with detail, wanted to be able to keep the initial excitement of the rough in. Eventhough I was using oils, light washes and negative painting started happening, similar to watercolours and I went went with the flow, without forcing the canvas to go in any different direction. I enjoyed the process and I am pretty happy with the result.

No hay nada mejor algunos días que una caminata temprano a la mañana en el bosque disfutando de los sonidos, los aromas y los colores. Como la anterior, esta pieza también fue inspirada por el Parque Goldstream  que está aproximadamente a 20 minutos del centro de Victoria. Soy muy afortunafda de vivir donde vivo, hay belleza por todos lados el año entero. :)

Fue interesante pintar este cuadro. Comencé sin un plan específico (tal vez hacer eso no es la mejor idea pero....bueno....) Sabía que no quería poner demasiados detalles, quería mantener la frescura del bosquejo inicial. A pesar de usar oleos, utilicé capas finas de pintura cmo si fuera acuarelas. No forcé un cambio de dirección y dejé que el lienzo se resolvera solo. Disfruté del proceso y estoy bastante satisfecha con el resultado.

Fall at Goldstream

I am loving all the colours around, really enjoying Fall this year. This took me to look in my photo files from previous years and I found this one I hadn't painted. It's Goldstream Park, a great place to visit right now with the Salmon Run happening. (Every year, salmon come back to spawn to exactly the same spot in in the river they were born after being in the ocean for years, nature never ceases to amaze me!) Hopefully I get there to paint on plein-air before the next wind storm!

Estoy disfrutando intensamente los colores del otoño este año lo que me inspiró a mirar mis archivos de fotos y buscar esta foto que no había pintado. Es el el Parque Goldstream, un lugar hermoso para visitar en este momento  con los colores y la "corrida del salmón" (todos los años los salmones vuelven al mismo lugar en el río en que nacieron  que nacieron después de pasar varios años en el mar, increíble lo que es la naturaleza!). Ojalá que alcance a ir a pintar a este parque antes de la próxima tormenta de viento!

You wouldn't know by looking at this painting that the weather was the most miserable thing we encountered that trip. It was rainy, cold, and so windy, spent a lot of time just holding on to my things so they would fly away. My easel ended up in the lake right from the get go, as I stood it up, turned to grab my backpack to weigh it and the whole thing flew in the water!  There was SO much water in it it was kind of funny. Liz Wiltzen who has done a lot of plein air  said she had never had such miserable weather for painting, so yay for us, for sticking to it!  I was actually not that cold for most of the day, had so many layers! By the end though, yes, it was getting to my bones and I was happy to pack up and go home. One of the challenges of the day was to find interest in an otherwise very flat picture. It was hard to find what the interesting part that I wanted to paint.

Whenever I attend workshops, I take away different things from different instructors. One of the big lessons from Liz  this time was "What's your story?".  When choosing what to paint, you are attracted to one thing that makes you want to paint it, whether that is the light, a particular shape, the way 2 colours relate to each other, etc. It is also very easy to get distracted by other elements  in the painting and forget what that story is. EVERYTHING in the painting has to be subordinate to THAT ONE thing you choose to be your story, otherwise if all the elements have equal importance then we don't really know what we are looking at. I had of course heard that before but this time the student was ready, and it sank in. In today's painting, my story this time was the brighter lighter green trees on the island next to the light in the background. The trouble I encountered here was that in trying to finish the piece once back in my studio, I forgot  what my story was. I had a lot of foreground,  I gave it way too much importance, taking attention away from the trees and  everything had equal rank.  Until yesterday when I darkened the value of the foreground and punched up the greens. I am MUCH more satisfied now with the way the overall painting reads. I feel I was able to go back to telling my story better. So I always remind myself to ask several times, even before I start when I am picking what to paint: What's my story??

Al mirar este cuadro seguro que no se imaginan el mal tiempo que tuvimos ese día, fue el peor de todos del viaje a los Bugaboos. Llovía, hacía frio y tanto viento que me pasé la mayor parte del tiempo sosteniendo mi atril para que no se volara. Mientras estaba armando todo,  me di vuelta para buscar la mochila y ponerla de peso en el atril, vino una ráfaga y me lo voló entero al lago! Había tanta agua en todos mis materiales que era gracioso. Liz Wiltzen, nuestra profesora que ha echo mucha pintura al aire libre, nos dijo que este había sido una de los peores días de su vida para pintar afuera asi que arriba nosotros! que pintamos y todo en esas condiciones. En realidad yo no tuve tanto frio, tenía muchas capas pero de todas formas estuve contenta de desarmar campamento al final del día ya que estaba empezando ano poder mover los dedos del frio en las manos! Uno de los desafíos del día fue que estaba todo bastante gris y aburrido, fue difícil encontrar algo interesante para pintar.

Siempre que voy a cursos, me llevo una o mas cosas de valor que aprendo de los instructores. Una de las grandes lecciones de este viaje que aprendí de Liz fue "Cual es tu historia?". Cuando estamos eligiendo qué pintar, siempre estamos atraídos por un elemento mas que otros, ya sea la luz, una de las formas que vemos, o la relación de dos colores. Tambén es muy fácil distraerse con otros elementnos dentro del cuadro y olvidarnos así de cual es nuestra historia que queremos contar. TODOS los elementos  dentro del cuadro tienen que estar subordinados a esa UNA cosa que elegimos  ser nuestra historia ya que si todos los elementos tienen igual importancia,  cuando miramos al cuadro no sabemos bien qué mirar. Por supuesto que yo había escuchado esto antes  pero esta vez, la alumna estaba lista para escuchar eso y esta vez lo entendí. En el caso del cuadro de hoy, mi historia son los verdes claros en los árboles de la isla y la luz que había detrás. El problema fue que cuando fui a terminar este cuadro ya en mi taller, me olvidé de mi historia y les dí igual importancia a toda la sección de adelante, quitándole atención a los árboles de atrás. Tenía muchos elementos adelante y todo dentro del cuadro tenia el mismo rango. Hasta ayer, cuando me dí cuenta de lo que tenía que hacer. Oscurecí la porción de tierra de adelante, le di mas intensidad a los verdes y la pintura se ve mucho mejor ahora, donde vuelvo a poder contar la historia mejor. Asi es que ahora, siempre me pregunto varias veces mientras pinto o aún antes, cuando estoy eligiendo qué pintar: Cuál es tu historia??

The second day of the trip in the Bugaboos started VERY grey, we were completely engulfed by clouds and the forecast for the rest of the morning and possibly the day was not very promising. So instead of going anywhere to get soaked  while attempting to paint grey we decided to stay by the lodge and set up there. There was not much to paint but I still found interest in some of the soft shapes that kept changing as the clouds moved all the time.  Right after lunch, we got the good news:  The weather has changed! Pack up, we are flying out! They took us to the most beautiful place on top of a ridge where we had a 360 degree view of everything! Crystal clear. It was magic. I will tell you more about that afternoon and show you what I did on a different post.
This painting was the one I did from the lodge, most of the peaks at the back were covered the whole time.

El segundo día en los Bugaboos comenzó MUY gris, estabamos completamente encerrados por la nubes y el pronóstico para el resto de la mañanay posiblemente el resto del día no era muy prometedor.  Asi que en lugar de ir a algun lado a  empaparamos mientras tratabamos de pintar gris  decidimos quedarnos en el hotel y pintar desde allí. No había mucho que pintar ya que las nubes cubrían casi todo  pero aún así encontré interés en las formas que cambiaban todo el tiempo con la nubes que se movían todo el tiempo. Despueés del almuerzo, recibimos las buenas noticias: Cambio de tiempo, armen todo que nos vamos! Nos llevaron a la cima de una montaña en la que teníamos una vista de 360 grados hacia todos lados. Les muestro y cuento de esa tarde en otro post mas adelante. :)
Edste cuadro fue el que hice desde el hotel, la mayoría de los picos que había atrás estuvieron cubiertos todo el tiempo.

Determination - Day 5 of 260

This one is called "Determination" because that day I was very very busy and despite that, I still did a drawing very late at night before going to sleep.   I am determined to make this project work. With that in mind.... I am keeping it VERY short today to go paint as I have been  under the weather these last few days, that cold going around got me too and I didn't get to paint yesterday or Friday.  Happy Monday!

Este se llama "Determinación" porque ese día había estado muy muy ocupada y a pesar de eso, hice un dibujo a última hora  antes de ir a dormir. Quiero que este proyecto funcione!. Y con estas palabras, la voy a hacer muy corta hoy ya para ir a pintar ya que estos últimos días he estado engripada y no pinté ayer o el viernes. Feliz Lunes a todos!

Light on the Ridge - Day 4 of 260

This painting was the second one painted in Pocket Lake the last day in the Bugaboos. The weather that day as I told you before  was changing every 5 minutes. As we were getting down to  the ridge where we were to paint that day I saw a little pocket of  beautiful light on the ridge and it didn't take very long until the whole back mountain was covered by clouds and the light was gone. I spent the morning thinking of it while I painted something else. But later on, the clouds moved and I quickly started painting,  realizing I didnt't have too long before the clouds that were coming in would cover the light AGAIN. They did indeed cover up everything so as I was already started I concentrated on the moutaiin in front hoping the clouds would move. And AGAIN thankfully they did and I was able to finish the back ridge and put in in the gorgeous little pocket of light, which was not the same, but I  clearly remembered it from the morning. I didn't do too much once in the studio, just keyed up the light a bit more and darkened the silhouettes of the trees. This is probably my favourite painting I did on the trip and it was a great exercise on "visual memory". That light was very much stuck in my head and I used lots of that "memory" while the clouds were playing with me!

Este cuadro fue el segundo del día que pasamos en Pocket Lake, el último día en los Bugaboos. El tiempo ese día como les conté anteriormente cambiaba cada 5 minutos. Cuando estabamos aterriznado en este lugar vi un pedacito hermoso de luz y no pasó mucho tiempo antes de que estuviera totalmente cubierto por nubes. Me pasé la mañana pensando en esa imagen, mientras pintaba el otro cuadro. Pero después, las nubes se fueron y comencé rapidamente a pintar porque sabía que no tenía mucho tiempo antes de otras nubes lo cubrieran DE NUEVO. Efectivamente enseguida no mas las nubes regresaron, cubriendo todo DE NUEVO y como ya había empezado, me concentré en la montaña de adelante esperando que las nubes se fueran. NUEVAMENTE por suerte se fueron y me dejaron ver   las montañas de atrás y la luz, que no era lo mismo pero yo la recordaba claramente de la mañana. No le he agregado mucho a este cuadro una vez en el taller, le aclaré la luz y oscurecí las siluetas de los árboles. Creo que este es mi cuadro favorito de los que pinté en el viaje  y fue un ejercicio excelente de "memoria visual". Esa luz estaba grabada en mi cabeza y usé muchos elementos de esa memoria mientras las nubes jugaban conmigo!!

Showing Up (Day 3 of 260)

"Showing Up" was done on Day 3 of the 260 Days of Art Making.  Had no time that day for a longer painting session and I really enjoy the meditative aspect of zentangling. I did it on a piece of watercolour paper and I am not sure I'll keep using that as I didn't enjoy the texture on the paper, I much prefer the smoothness of hot press paper.
Showing up is the answer to so many things, getting better at your art, marketing, getting healthier and stronger. If we do things for only a couple of days and then stop,  whether that is do a drawing, a plein air painting, try to lose weight or run a marathon, we will not see good results. We have to put the effort with dedication.
I asked Stephen Quiller at the workshop in August: "If you were to give me one piece  of advice for me to follow to get better at my art, what would that be?"  His answer: "Show up. I just kept showing up at the studio and don't stop". Same with Jeanne Bessette a couple of weeks before, her answer was: "You have to put the devotion into your work to get better". I get the same answer when I talk to or observe artists I admire. Have you heard of  the 10,000 hours? It is said that if you put 10,000 hours into something, be it golf, painting or cooking, anything, you will master it. THAT is my motivation to do this year long project. Plain and simple. I just want to get better. How about you? What are you committed to?

Hice "Aparecer" el Día 3 de los 260 Días de Hacer Arte.  No tuve tiempo ese día para una sesión más larga de pintura y disfruto mucho el aspecto meditativo del zentangle. Lo hice en un pedazo de papel de acuarela  y  no creo que lo use de nuevo para esto ya que no me gustó la textura del papel, prefiero papeles mas lisos para dibujar con tinta.

Aparecer (o estar presente o atender, no sé muy bien cómo traducir esto) es la respuesta para muchas cosas. No podemos esperar resultados positivos si hacemos algo solamente uno o dos día, ya sea pintar, dibujar, tratar de bajar de peso o entrenar para una maratón. Tenemos que seguir haciendo con dedicación.

Le pregunté a Stephen Quiller en el curso en Agosto: "Si me tuvieras que dar un consejo para mejorar mi pintura, cuál sería?". Su respuesta: "Aparecé, yo simplemente seguí apareciendo en el taller y no paré". Lo mismo me dijo Jean Bessette, en el retiro en Agosto, su respuesta fue: "Tenés que poner devoción en tu arte para mejorar". Recibo la misma respuesta cuando hablo u observo artistas que yo admiro. Han escuchado algunas vez a alguien hablar de las 10.000 horas? Se dice que si uno pone 10.000 horas en algo, lo que sea, golf, cocina o pintura, uno se va a transformar en maestro de esa disciplina. ESA es mi motivación para el proyecto de este año. Simple. Quiero mejorar. Y vos? Estás comprometido a qué?

Thankful

So many things to always be thankful for but this year in particular I am thankful for life first and foremost. So so grateful my son is alive after giving us the scare of our lives. I am thankful he is recovering well,  attending school  and  having for the most part the regular life any 16 year old has.  :) I am sharing with you all a song I  grew up with. A song of thankfulness by Mercedes Sosa who is a very famous Argentinian singer and  I just love this version of the song written by ChileanVioleta Parra. I specially love the first verse that says "Thanks to life which has given so much".

Tantas cosas por las que siempre estoy agradecida pero este año en particular estoy agradecida por la vida mas que nada. Estoy tan tan agradecida de que mi hijo esté vivo después de habernos dado el susto de nuestras vidas. Estoy muy agradecida de que sigue recuperandose bien, va  a la escuela y vive una vida normal como cualquier chico de 16 aÑos. :) Los dejo con una canción de mi infancia. Un canción de agradecimiento por Mercedes Sosa, una cantante argentina muy famosa. Me encanta esta versión de la canción escrita por la chilena Violeta Parra, especialmente me gusta el comienzo cuando dice "Gracias a la vida, que me ha dado tanto".

This is what I had done on site that day

The last day we were in the Bugaboos we went to a place called Pocket Lake. Gorgeous spot of course where there were so many paintings to do that I could have stayed there for weeks and not run out of subject matter! The weather that day was crazy, we had all kinds, from sunshine and warmth to snow and clouds, many times over. Soon after we got there, I saw this small larch  which had been cut in half, who knows, maybe a windstorm, snow, bears?? Anyway, what caught my eye was the gorgeous colour it was turning. We were told in a couple of weeks they would all be looking like this one with Fall  and cooler temperatures fast approaching.   (Larches are a kind of deciduous conifer, before moving to Canada I didn't know conifers could be deciduous???) The water on the lake kept changing colours with sun peeking in and out all the time. It would go from grey and flat to beautiful tones of green and turquoise. The whole day I was kind of hoping and dreading at the same time a bear encounter. Lyle, our wonderful guide, told us a mama bear had died in an avalanche right there a couple of years ago and her 2 cubs keep coming back. Last year they both did, this year they have seen only one of them so our guide  (who kept an eye open for bears all the time) said they were around for sure. I wish we had seen one but  I am also glad we didn't!!!  Seeing a grizzly would have scared the heck out of me!

El último día que estuvimos en los Bugaboos fuimos a un lugar llamado Lago Pocket. Lugar  hermosísimo en el que había tantos cuadros para pintar que me podría haber quedado ahí por semanas para pintarlos a todos! El tiempo ese día estuvo luco, tuvimos desde sol a nieve y nubes varias veces.  Apenas llegamos, vi este alerce que se estaba poniendo amarillo que estaba cortado por la mitad, quién sabe, viento, nieve, un oso?? Lo que me interesó para pintar fueron los hermosos tonos de amarillos y ocres que estaba empezando a tomar. Me dijeron que en un par de semanas mas todos iban a empezar a ponerse amarillos al acercarse el otoño.  Los alerces son una conífera de hojas caducas, (Antes de venir a Canadá no sabía que algunas coníferas son de hojas caducas). El agua cambiaba de color todo el tiempo cuando el sol salía y se entraba. Se ponía toda gris y cambiaba a distintos tonos de verdes y turquesas. El día entero estuve medio como esperando y temiendo que se apareciera un oso. Lyle, nuestro guía nos dijo que hace dos años se había muerto una mamá osa en una avalancha en este lugar y los ositos siguen volviendo. El año pasado volvieron los dos, y este año han visto a uno solamente, pero seguro que andan por ahí. Es una pena que no hayamos visto ninguno pero al mismo tiempo me alegro!!! Me hubiero muerto de miedo si hubiese visto un oso gris en su ambiente|!!!

Vermillion Lake Trees

All I got to do before having to pack up and go

This was the second painting of the afternoon while in Banff. I wanted to get  the light peeking though the trees on the lake and the beautiful tones of purple, mauves and blues on the water. I was a bit intimidated by doing the trees in the foreground but decided to go for it and learn.....  I only had about 20 min. before we had to pack up and go so I didn't even get to cover the whole panel with paint! After working on the last 2 previous paintings here back in the studio, I was on a roll with all the work from the Bugaboos trip and just kept going, one after the other. This one by the way is the first painting I did after I decided to commit publicly to A year of Art Making :) on Sep 25; slowly I'll work on posting them all.  I am by the way thrilled to report things are still good! (good thing since it's only been 11 days!!!) I have painted or drawn every single day since then. Cheers to that!
(I had a horrible trying to get a decent photo of this painting, it is not perfect but its the best I got,  photographing well my work is also on the list of goals for the year!!)

Este fue el segundo cuadro de la tarde en Banff. Quería pintar los pedacitos de agua que se veían entre las ramas de los árboles en el lago y los hermosísimos tonos de violetas y azules que se veían sobre el agua. Le tenía un poco de miedo a los  árboles en primer plano pero decidí que hacerlo era la mejor forma de aprender y mejorar. El bosquejo en la segunda foto fue lo que había pintado en los 20 minutos que tuve antes de tener que guardar todo e irnos, ni siquiera había alcanzado a poner pintura en todo el panel! Después de trabajar con los paisajes anteriores ya en el taller hace un par de semanas, estaba embalada con los bosquejos del viajes y seguí terminandolos, uno por uno. Este en particular fue el primero que hice después de haber decidido a comprometerme abiertamente a Un Año de Hacer Arte :) el 25 de Septiembre. De a poco me voy a poner al día y les muestro todos. Estoy fascinada de contarles que anda todo bien, he pintado o dibujado todos los días desde entonces! (mejor que ande todo bien ya que sólo van 11 días!!!) Un brindis por eso!
(Me resultó muy difícil sacar una foto decente de este cuadro, no es perfecta pero es la mejor de todas; sacar buenas fotos de mis cuadros es otra  de mis metas para este año!

This was an interesting experiment. A couple of weeks ago I was going to touch up the painting I had done on site in Banff, (the one showed you on the last post) and Madelaine (one of the beautiful artists I met in that trip who luckily lives here in Victoria and was here in my studio painting with me) said: "Why don't you just paint another one?".  So I did! Instead of trying to change so many things to the plein air painting (becoming something else altogether!),  I ended up choosing a different composition and pallette and I am pleased with the outcome. The funny thing is once I had that out of my system, I no longer needed to change SO many things in the plain air sketch!!  I think I prefer the first one, it does have a special mood  I think many times gets captured when you are there in the moment. Which one do you prefer?? Thank you for the suggestion Madelaine!

Este fue un experimento interesante. Hace un par de semanas, estaba por retocar y terminar el cuadro que pinté en  Banff (el que les mostré en el post anterior) y Madelaine (una de las artistas que conocí en el viaje, que vive en Victoria y estaba pintando conmigo en mi taller)  me dice: "Por que no pintas otro?"  Así lo hice entonces....  En lugar de tratar de cambiar tantas cosas en la pintura al aire libre (que termina siendo otra cuadro completamente distinto), terminé eligiendo una composición diferente y colores totalmente distintos;  estoy satisfecha con como quedó. La mejor parte fue que una vez que me saqué las ganas de pintarlo distinto ya no me hizo falta cambiar tanto el original! Creo que prefiero el primero, el  pintado al aire libre, tiene un toque especial que muchas veces se consigue cuando uno pinta afuera y se está en ese momento. Ustedes cuál prefieren??  Gracias Madeliane por la sugerencia!

 Wow!! It's very excting that my last post touched some cords in some people and there are  a few brave artists that are now inspired to create with gusto :) I have started a facebook group called  "A Year of Art Making"  where we will share our experiences, support and inspire each other. If you are interested in being part of it, just send a request to join! There are no set guidelines,  no need to post so often or to create as often as the next person, each of us is tailoring the project to what we need for ourselves, deciding what we are doing, how often and how much to share.

So with this, I share with you a piece I started back in the Bugaboos. It was the first plein air  of the trip right in Banff actually, the day before we went higher in the mountains. We found this little place by the highway by Vermillion Lake where we were able to tuck ourselves out of the wind and spent the afternoon chasing the ligth. Braving the elements is what can make plein air fun (or not!).  When I came back to the studio most of my paintings were too dark for my liking so I have been "finishing" them all. Mt. Rundle in the back is quite an iconic element in Banff. What caught my eye that day was the small wedges of vibrant green among the grayness and more subdued colours.  I was also wanting to portray the scale, eveything is so huge there; the lake is big, the trees are tall but they are nothing compared to how inmensly big those mountains are! I wanted to leave the freshness of the plein air sketch so I didn't do too much to this one, I added punches of brighter greens as I had seen them that day.

Wow!! Estoy muy contenta de que mi último post resonó con varios artistas valientes y los ha inspirado a crear con ganas! He formado un grupo en Facebook que se llama "Un Año de Hacer Arte" en el que vamos a compartir experiencias, apoyo e inspiración. Si estás interesado en ser parte, simplemente mandá un pedido para ser parte! No hay muchas reglas, no hace falta poner fotos todos los días, o crear tantas piezas, cada uno de nosotros  ponemos las reglas del juego  de acuerdo a cuáles son nuestras metas; cada uno decide qué es lo que hace, cada cuánto y si lo quiere mostrar o no.

Entonces ahora les muestro una pintura que empecé en el viaje a los Bugaboos. Fue el primer cuadro que pinté ese viaje y fue en Banff, el día anterior a ir a los Bugaboos.  Encontramos un lugarcito al lado de la autopista frente al Lago Vermillion donde pudimos estar al reparo del viento y pasamos la tarde persiguiendo la luz. El clima y sus cambios es una de las cosas que uno enfrenta cuando pinta al aire libre. Cuando volví a casa todo lo que pinté en ese viaje estaba demasiado oscuro para mi gusto asi que he pasado estos últimos días "terminando" todas mis pinturas. El Monte Rundle que se ve en el cuadro es una de las cosas que identifica este lugar. Lo que me llamó la atención ese día fueron los pedacitos de verde mas intenso que aparecían y desaparecían todo el tiempo entre los grises y verdes mas apagados.  Además quería marcar la escala de esas montanas que son tan enormes! El lago es grande, los árboles son altos pero no son nada comparados con el tamano inmeso de esas montanas! Quise también dejar el bosquejo con pocos cambios para mantener la espontaneidad del mismo. Le agregué un poco de verde mas intenso como los había visto ese día.

260 Days of Art Making

In the last few months (maybe years actually),  I have come across a few blogs that have been very inspiring for me, they are making me want to get into trouble and by that I mean more action! I am feeling like committing to some structure and hard work after the last 10 months of family health challenges, daughter graduating and moving to a different house (I am happy to report that most of the boxes are already unpacked, just a few here and there left to do,  it is starting to look and feel more like home and my son is doing great :)

One of the blogs I am talking about is Crystal Moody's blog. She did last year "365 Days of Creative Habits" and is now on a "360 Days of Creative Habits". After last year's experience she decided to give herself  5 grace days! I love reading her insights, she is awesome at sharing with us lots of her process thinking and the discoveries she makes along the way, not technical painting information but more about the experiences she is going through.

The Daily Painting Movement,  Carol Marine and so many others that embraced this practice have also influenced the direction I am taking.

What I am interested in most of all  is the growth I know occurs when you do projects and practices like these. I know that with continued action I will grow as an artist which is ultimately my goal, to be a better painter each day.   I love learning and discovering and want to dig deeper into my art. So this is the why.

I was trying to figure out how to go about it all. Do I set some rules for myself? How many days a week do I want to put in? Do I count days or works? Only paintings count? Do drawings and sketches also count?

This is what I DO know:  I am interested in exploring some new media, drawing more, doing more painting from life, doing more plein air painting, doing small paintings as well as larger paintings to create new bodies of work. I don't want to get boxed into guidelines set by others (only paintings, or only drawings for example), I know I'll feel them constricting and they would take the fun away.

So...... what I have decided is .... drum roll.....  I am committing publicly (this is a big one for me, when I commit publicly, then I have to do it, right?) to doing in one year 260 days of creating. It can be anything from a 5 minute line drawing to a large acrylic piece done over several days. That is 5 days a week.   I don't need to spend 8 hours in the studio everyday if I don't have that time (or inspiration) but I have to at least do a 5 min drawing in those days that life just takes over. It will be fun to see at the end of it all where I am and how much work I have produced. I may not post absolutely everything I paint, draw, sketch because sometimes they may just not work out but I'll post more regularly that I have lately :)

So, what do you think? Anyone interested in playing along with me setting your own rules?? It would be lovely to have company along the way!!!

En estos últimos meses (o años mejor dicho), he recibido mucha inspiración de ciertos blogs que leo a diario y me han dado ganas de meterme en problemas; con esto quiero decir ponerme en acción! Siento que necesito comprometerme a tener cierta estructura y trabajo duro después de los últimos meses de problemas de salud con la familia, hija que se graduó y se mudó a otra ciudad para estudiar y una mudanza para nosotros! (Estoy contenta con poder contarles que ya casi no quedan cajas sin desarmar, ya va tomando mas pinta de hogar y mis dos hijos están muy bien!)

Uno de los blogs a los que me refiero es el de Crystal Moody. Ella  hizo el año pasado"365 Días Hábitos Creativos". y este año en "360 Días de Hábitos Creativos". Después de la experiencia del año pasado ella decidió darse 5 días de gracia! Me encanta leer sus reflexiones diarias, ella es muy buena en compartir sus procesos, ideas y descubrimientos que está haciendo en el camino, no información técnica sobre cómo pintar si no mas con respecto a las experiencias que tiene en este proyecto.

El Grupo de "Una Pintura Diaria", Carol Marine y muchos otros artistas que admiro han incorporado esta práctica y  han sido una gran influencia en la dirección que quiero ir.
Lo que más me interesa es el crecimiento que ocurre cuando uno hace proyectos y prácticas de este tipo. Sé que con acción continua voy a crecer como artista que es mi meta,  ser una artista mejor cada día. Me encanta aprender y descubrir!
He estado tratando de decidir cómo hacerlo. Me pongo reglas? Cuantos días por semana quiero comprometer? Cuento días o pinturas? Sólo pinturas o dibujos y bosquejos también?
Esto es lo que sé: Estoy interesada en explorar medios nuevos, quiero dibujar mas, pintar de cosas reales (no de fotos) y en plein-air, quiero hacer pinturas pequeñas pero también quiero hacer piezas mas grandes y desarrollar series. No quiero encajonarme en reglas establecidas por otros (sólo pinturas o sólo dibujos por ejemplo), se que me van a sofocar y sacarían el placer de este proyecto. Asi que lo que he decidido es que ..... tatatatan.....  me comprometo públicamente (y esto es importante para mi, si lo hago público, lo tengo que hacer a la fuerza no?) a hacer  en un año 260 días de creación. Puede ser un dibujo simple o una pintura grande terminada en varios días. Esto es 5 días a la semana, no hace falta que este en mi taller 8 horas por día si no tengo tiempo (o inspiración) pero tengo que por lo menos hacer un bosquejo de 5 minutos. Va a ser muy gratificante ver al final del año lo que he logrado. Tal vez no ponga todo en el blog pero si voy a poner cosas mas a menudo de lo que he estado publicando ultimamente. 

Que les parece?? Alguien me quiere acompañar y hacer algo, poniendo sus propias reglas?? Sería muy bueno tener compañía!!

This is a painting I did a while back but hadn't posted. I have always loved Camellias and I need to get one for the garden in my new house. Today the post is short and sweet; I am cooking up a new exciting project I have embarked on and will share with you in a couple of days. Esta es una pintura que hice hace un tiempo pero no les había mostrado.  Siempre me ha encantado las camelias, tengo que comprar una para el jardín en mi nueva casa. Hoy escribo poco porque estoy terminando de decidir los detalles de un proyecto nuevo e interesante que he comenzado. Les cuento en un par de días.  Me voy a pintar :) Espero que esto les despierte la curiosidad y tal vez hasta consideren  hacer el proyecto conmigo??

Old Timers - Magic and Hectic August

The month of August was hectic and magic with quite a few significant events in my life.

We spent 10 days on the boat this summer; it was a very welcome time of relaxation in which we all did pretty much nothing! I did take my paints but only painted the last couple of days. The painting above was one of those, some old boats that have been moored at Genoa Bay for who knows how long!

I spent a whole week in August at Pearson College in Metchosin at an art retreat with the wonderful Jeanne Bessette. She is an artist from Raleigh, North Carolina, who is  an inspiration  to me as she has become an extremely successful artist in a short period of time and the best part is she is willing to share her journey with us. What a great inspiring week that was in the company of 15 other artists from all over North America. Thank you ladies!

Another magical time was a week  spent in the Bugaboos, BC en las Rocllosas.  I went on another awesome adventure  where I took part in a plein-air painting workshop with Liz Wiltzen and Stephen Quiller. What an incredible experience that was and such an honour to spend time with Liz and Stephen! I have only heard of  "the Quiller Wheel" since the beginning of my painting life so to meet him and just sit down and chat about art was a real treat.

We went "heli-painting". Everyday we would be helicoptered to quite remote locations where we spent the day painting until we were ready to come back to the lodge. Yes, helicoptered!! What a rush!! LOVED IT!! We were fortunate with the weather as the Bugaboos had been engulfed in smoke from forest fires just the week before but it cleared up before we got there. We had of course mountain weather, changing every 5 minutes: in the same day we had snow, sun, clouds, wind, rain, sun again, snow again, which got repeated the whole day!

During the month of August I also went to Vancouver a few times helping my 18 year old daughter (how did she get to be 18??????) get set up for University.   This is another huge change for our family.... I am so thankful for my art which will keep me busy making it easier to fight the empty nest syndrome!  All in all, it was a very very busy August. I am ready to stay home, rest, regroup, set some new goals and go for them!!

I know it was a long post today! I apologize, thanks for staying to the bitter end :)

El mes de Agosto fue agitado y mágico con varios eventos muy importanes en mi vida. 

Al comienzo de Agosto, pasamos  10 días navegando en el velero; fueron unos días muy bienvenidos de descanso, no hicimos nada mas que relajarnos y disfrutar. Llevé mis pinturas pero sólo pinté los últimos dos días. El cuadro que les muestro hoy fue uno de ellos, dos lanchas que hace vaya a saber cuantos años están ancladas en Genoa Bay!

Después de eso, pasé una semana en Metchosin en  la Pearson College en un retiro de arte con la maravillosa Jeanne Bessette, una artista de Raleigh, Carolina del Norte que es una inspiración para mí ya que se ha transformado en una artista de mucho éxito en muy poco tiempo y la mejor parte es que ella comparte su experiencia. Qué semana hermosa llena de arte que tuve con otras 15 artistas de distintas partes de Norte América!   Gracias Amigas!

Otro evento mágico fue una semana en los Bugaboos, BC. Fui parte de otra aventura en la que participé de una curso con Liz Wiltzen  y Stephen Quiller.  Qué experiencia increíble que fue y qué honor pasar una semana con Liz y Stephen. Desde que comencé a pintar que había escuchado sobre "la rueda de colores de Quiller" así que conocerlo, pintar con él y sentarnos a charlar sobre arte fue realmente un placer.

Todos los días nos llevaban en helicóptero a destinos bastantes remotos donde pasabamos el día pintando hasta que estabamos listos para volver al hospedaje. Si, en helicóptero!! Mucha adrenalina por supuesto, ME ENCANTO!! Tuvimos mucha suerte con el tiempo ya que los Bugaboos habían estado tapados de humo la semana anterior por incendios forestales. Tuvimos por supuesto clima de montaña, cambiaba muy rapidamente: en el mismo día tuvimos nieve, sol, nubes, viento, sol de nuevo, lluvia, sol de nuevo, nieve, repetir esto varias veces!

En Agosto también fui a Vancouver varias veces a ayudar a mi hija de 18 años (Cómo es que ya tiene 18 años?????????)  a instalarse en un departamento para empezar la universidad. Este es otro gran cambio para nuestra familia este año; estoy tan agradecida  por tener mi arte, que me va a mantener ocupada  y va a ser mas fácil pelear con el "Síndrome de Nido Vacío".

El mes de Agosto fue tan agitado que estoy lista para descasar, reagrupar, poner nuevas metas y   poner todo en marcha para alcanzarlas!!

Sé que esto fue muy largo hoy, les pido disculpas, gracias por estar todavía leyendo!!

Wow! It feels like life has picked up pace yet again and I haven't been able to write too much lately! Can't believe it's been a month since my last post... so many things have happened I don't know where to start!

I think I will start with what is happening right now and cover the last month in my next post..... I was invited to participate in a show called "In Conversation - Poets Speak, Artists Respond". A poem was assigned to different visual artists to be interpreted in any way. I had fun with it.  I may still add some more imagery to my piece but I am not sure.

Below is the poem that inspired the painting, it was written by a local artist called Gail Kernius. It touched a special cord in me because of some of the events in my life this past year (I wondered if they hand-picked that poem for me!) As a mom, I have always wondered about what kind of lives my kids will live, whether they will have simple lives full of joy and love or more complicated ones with challenges and bends in the road.  Unfortunately, as you may know and remember, my son did have a huge mountain to climb this past year (see here) but he made it, he has recovered incredibly well from what could have been very tragic and we are eternally thankful for that. As a matter of fact, he started Grade 11 this week with his peers (which was a goal of his from the beginning) and I am so very proud of how far he has come!  My hope is that he conquers many more mountains and that he knows he is loved, no matter what kind of life he chooses to live. Love you Mateo!

Each poem has a unique sense of energy and emotion, and each artist's interpretation is just as wonderfully diverse. Visitors can get in on the "call and response" nature of this exhibit by creating their own works with the art supplies provided - or bring your own! Sounds like fun!
