Well....  this one is an oldie but I still like it! It is a large painting I did a few years ago from a photo taken in one of our trips to Desolation Sound. Rebecca Spit is on one the most beautiful places on Quadra Island! Ive been there 3 times and every time I go, I can't help myself and take as many photos as the first time I was there. In this particular shot, we were anchored in the bay for a couple of very enjoyable days.
Painting time has not been great this week, holiday last Monday, a couple of meetings, errands  and the Olympics that seem to have trapped me. I admire these kid's dedication, tenacity and discipline so much, they are inspiring! Go Canada!
BUT it is not all idle time in front of the TV, I have taken the opportunity to be working on some of the marketing things on my list. Been fussing with the look of the blog, adding things I have seen on other blogs that I liked (Or in some cases trying to as these things are complicated sometimes!), playing with the colour scheme and all that kind of "fun" and necessary stuff. What do you think of the banner at the top of the blog?
I have also taken some work to be displayed at Coast Collective and this morning I took some pieces to Equinox Health Clinic, a massage therapy clinic on Fort Street. Hope Lysanne (wonderful therapist!)  and her clients enjoy my work there for the next couple of months. :)

I also made some dinner tonight, (well.... I do make dinner other nights too) but sort of explaining why I didn't get to paint today :(   Now going for a run! :)

Esta es una pintura vieja pero todavia me gusta! Es un cuadro bastante grande que pinté hace unos años de una foto sacada en uno de nuestros viajes a Desolation Sound. La Peninsula Rebecca es uno de los lugares mas hermosos en la Isla Quadra! He visitado ese lugar 3 veces y  cada vez que voy ahi, vuelvo a sacar la misma inmensa cantidad fotos que la vez anterior. En esta toma, estabamos anclados en la bahía durante un par de dias que disfrutamos mucho.
Esta semana no he pintado mucho lamentablemente. Fue feriado el lunes, tuve reuniones y cosas que hacer y las Olimpíadas que me han atrapado. Admiro tanto a la dedicacion, tenacidad y disciplina de estos atletas! Vamos Canada! Pero todo esto no signica que he estado sentada ociosamente  todo el tiempo en frente del televisor, he aprovechado esta oportunidad para  hacer algunas de las cosas en mi lista de marketing. He estado jugando con este blog, cambiando el banner de arriba (que les parece?), agregando cosas que veo en otros blogs que me gustan, eligiendo los colores a usar y todo ese tipo de cosas que hay que hacer.
Tambien llevé cuadros a Coast Collective y esta manana llevé cuadros a la Clinica Equinox, una clinica de masajes en el centro. Espero que Lysanne (excelente terapista)  y sus pacientes disfruten de mi arte. :)
También preparé la cena ( bueno..... hago la cena otras noches también) pero estoy tratando de  explicar por que no pude pintar hoy! :(   y ahora me voy a correr! :)

There were 3 reasons for this painting today:

1- We are getting to the bottom of the box of kiwis we  harvested this year and I wanted  to paint them! (Did you know that kiwis grow in vines, you need to have a male and a female plant, bees do the pollination, the time to harvest them is after the first frost and a sign to know if they are ready is to cut one in half and if the seeds are dark then they are ready, if the seeds are still green, they need more time on the vine? We got about 75 this year, not as many as other years but the first time we harvested them at the right point!)

2- I also wanted to do a bit of Liz Wiltzen's exercise about practicing value by doing the same colour on the same colour and getting the different temperatures and values in your painting. Today it was green. I will do more on other colours. 

3- It is Friday and I hadn't done a small painting from life this week as I shared was one of my goals (1 or 2 a week) so I set  up and got it done! 

One very important thing is that when I listed all the artists from Victoria that participated in the challenge  on my blog on the 31st I forgot to include a fellow artist! I knew I was forgetting one!  (Or 2) Diana Grenko produced some little jewels this past month. Do go to her blog and enjoy her work. Enjoy the weekend! We had a little dusting of snow this morning, we are expecting more Sunday. Great cold weather to maybe paint and to watch the Winter Olympics! Go Canada! (And Argentina, they have 7 athletes!)

Hay 3 razones por las que pinté este cuadro hoy:

1- Estamos llegando al fondo de la caja de kiwis que cosechamos de mi planta y quería pintarlos antes de que se acabaran. (Sabían que los kiwis crecen en enredaderas, debe haber una planeta macho y una hembra, abejas hacen la polinización, se cosechan una vez que haya caído la primer helada y una señal de que serán listos son las semillas, hay que cortar un kiwi por la mitad y si las semillas están oscuras, están listos para cortarlos, si las semillas están verdes todavía, les hace falta más tiempo en la planta? Este año sacamos alrededor de 75, no tanto como otros años pero la primera vez que los cosechamos al punto justo!)

2- Hoy tambien queria hacer un ejercico que Liz Wiltzen escribió en un blog hace poco sobre usar un color sobre el mismo color para poder estudiar temperatura y luz y sombras (como se dice esto en español???? En inglés decimos "valores") Hoy fue verde sobre verde. Voy a hacer otros en otros colores. 

3- Es Viernes y no había echo una pintura chica esta semana como dije ayer que quería hacer, (una de mis metas es 1 o 2 cuadros chicos por semana) así que hoy la tenía que hacer! 

Una cosa muy importante es que la semana pasada cuando les conté de todos los artistas de Victoria que participaron en el desafío  sabía que me olvidaba de una persona (o más!) Diana Grenko pintó unas joyas hermosas este mes pasado. Visiten su blog y disfruten de su arte!

Que tengan buen fin de semana, esta mañana nevó un poco, esperamos más el domingo. Hace bastante frío y esta bárbaro para pintar o para ver las olimpiadas de invierno! Vamos Canadá! (y Argentina! Tienen 7 atletas!)

Maiden Voyage and goals (#71 of 100)

I needed a break after the 30 days which doesn't necessarily mean I have not been in the studio! I actually have been here pretty much everyday, thinking, regrouping, tidying up!  But yesterday was actually the first day I painted art. I came back on Monday to start selecting the work that is 100% finished and I am happy with and separated it from work that either needs to be finished, adjusted, burnt? Who knows! I started getting the "selected" ones ready for showing or to go to their new homes, painted the edges of the canvas and got them off the wall. I decided that I would put up on the wall the work that needs TLC or finishing. I have this big pile of unfinished work that will get a serious look in the next coming months.... The idea is that if they are out and about I can keep them in my radar and get them done one by one. (Or disposed of)  And it has already happened. I totally got inspired to finish a landscape I started en plein air a couple of years ago after seeing someone's blog. I wouldn't have connected it to that particular painting had it not been out in plain sight. I will attack it in the next few days. 

I have set some goals and finishing is one of them. I also want to continue to do 1 to 2 small works per week and then develop larger pieces. This will all help me get to the 100 paintings that I had set as a goal after last September. This one today puts me at 71 of 100 (starting to count since last June). 

I started Maiden Voyage during the challenge, number 26 of 30, go back there to read the story behind it if you have time and haven't seen it. I am pretty pleased with it.  I could continue to correct, add and take out for a long time but this is as far as I want to go with it. Hope you like it!

(The sun is shining in my studio while I write this and I am loving it! It was -6 this morning when I drove the kids to school!!! Was it me saying spring is here just a few days ago while I painted flowers??????)

Necesitaba tomarme unos días después de los 30 días aunque esto no quiera decir que no haya estado en el taller. He estado acá todos los días, pensando, reagrupando, ordenando!! Ayer fue el primer día que pinté arte. Volví el lunes y empecé una buena clasificación de las piezas que están 100% terminadas y me gustan. Separé esas de las que necesitan un poco más de trabajo, correcciones (o hay que quemarlas??) quien sabe! Empecé el proceso de terminar las "seleccionadas" para que estén listas para exhibir o para que se vayan a su nuevo hogar. Pinté los bordes de los lienzos y las saqué de la pared. Decidí colgar en esa pared piezas que necesitan un poco de cariño y trabajo. Tengo una pila grande de trabajos sin terminar que en los próximos meses van a ser terminadas o descartadas....la idea es que si las tengo a la vista, están en mi radar todo el tiempo y las puedo terminar una por una. Y ya pasó. Despues de leer un blog de otro artista me vino la inspiración para terminar un paisaje que empecé hace un par de años en  plein air. no hubiera echo la confección con ese paisaje si no hubiera estado a la vista. Me he puesto varias metas para este año y terminar piezas empreñadas es una de ellas. También quiero pintar por semana 1 o 2 cuadros chiquitos como los del desafío y quiero también empezar piezas más grandes. De esta manera voy a poder llegar a los 100 cuadros que me había propuesto después del desafío en septiembre pasado. Con la de hoy, estoy en 71 de 100. (Empezando a contar desde Junio del año pasado).

Había empezado Viaje Inaugural durante el desafío, la número 26 de 30, vuelvan ahí para ver la historia de este cuadro so les interesa y tienen tiempo. Estoy bastante satisfecha con lo que hice. Podría seguir corrigiendo, agregando, sacando durante mucho tiempo pero es hasta acá a donde quiero llegar. Espero que les guste! 

(El sol está brillando en mi taller mientras escribo esto y me encanta! Hoy hacía 6 grados bajo cero cuando llevé los chicos a las escuela!!!! Era yo la que decía que la primavera ya llegaba hace unos días mientra pintaba flores???????)

30 Paintings in 30 Days

Wow! I can't believe it is over! At times it seemed the end was so far away and yet, here we are. I love doing this, I love studying things and this challenge is like doing homework everyday. It gives me the chance to build my skills from one day to the next one. When I did the one last September I was just getting started with oils and it gave me  a chance to understand how the medium works. Work got busy after September and  I didn't have a chance to paint too much so these 30 days have again given me the opportunity to keep playing with oils. I don't love everything I created this month but I do like quite a few of them,  a lot!  I will certainly keep exploring some of the subjects I visited this month. Practice makes perfect right? I know my work  won't be perfect but it will be better for sure!

Last September it was only Sharlene Stushnov-Lee and myself that did the 30 days in Victoria. Well..... word got around and we managed to "invite" a few more local artists to do it with us! Please take a moment to visit them and see the wonderful art they created in the last 30 days! A huge congratulations to all! Wow! No puedo creer que se haya acabado! En algunos momentos parecía que no se terminaba más y sin embargo acá estamos. Me encanta hacer esto, me encanta estudiar cosas y este desafío es como hacer deberes todos los días. Me da la oportunidad de mejorar mis habilidades a diario. Cuando hice el anterior en Septiembre del año pasado, están recién empezando con óleos y pude entender mejor  y practicar cómo funcionan. Estuve muy ocupada con trabajo después de eso y no pude pintar mucho así que estos 30 días me han permitido seguir jugando con ellos. No me encanta todo lo que produje este mes peor si me gustan algunas, MUCHO! Voy a seguir con seguridad explorando muchas de los temas que toqué este mes. La práctica lleva a la perfección, no? Yo sé que mi arte no va a ser perfecto pero seguro va a ser mejor!

En septiembre del año pasado éramos solamente dos las que lo hicimos acá en Victoria. Sharlene  Stushnov-Lee y yo. Parece que se corrió la bolilla porque se nos unieron unos cuantos más!! Vean lo que ellos han creado en estos últimos 30 días!  Muchas felicitaciones para todos! Fue muy bueno tener el compañerismo esta vez. #30 of 30: Muddy Feet

About 6 years ago I started running. I had never done it in my life and never in a million years did I think I would accomplish as much as I have in that department. From not running at all to running a marathon a couple of years ago, proves to me that if you put the effort into something, it can be done.

Anyway, I have met of course a whole new bunch of friends through running, the social aspect is one of the reasons I do it. We have spent many many hours together in trails, roads, mountains and rivers. Yes, rivers, lakes, puddles, rain, snow, ice, you name it. A few years ago, we went as always for a Sunday morning run to Elk/Beaver Lake here in town. It has a 10 k loop around the 2 lakes and there are a few trails to add if you want to. It had been raining a LOT in Victoria that previous week and we set out happily on me of those extra trails knowing we would find some mud. (Yes, we would splash and jump in the puddles like little kids every single chance we had).  This photo is not that day but a different one, you get the idea. 

After about 1.5 k we got to a spot that was a bit flooded..... We thought it was only a bit and then we saw the dog not walking but swimming!  Into the water we went and I ended up with water up to my waist!  We have never seen that much water and mud in that trail before! After getting out of the worst (or best) part we took this picture and I have wanted to paint it for a long time. We were muddy, cold as heck but laughing our guts out. It was one of the best runs I have ever done. Thank You my friends! Lots of good memories!

This is number 30 in the challenge and I am glad and sad at the same about it being finished. It took me a while to really get into it this time because of the trip at the beginning but I am very glad to have done it again. I believe daily practise, just like daily training for running the marathon, gives results, helps growth and plan to keep painting if not daily, almost. I am glad to having been "in my room" for a month!

Hace más o menos 6 años empecé a correr. Nunca lo había echo en mi vida y nunca en un millón de años yo me hubiera imaginado que iba a lograr todo lo que logrado con este deporte. De no correr nada a correr una maratón hace un par de años, prueba de que si se pone el esfuerzo se puede conseguir mucho. 

Por supuesto que en estos años he conocido todo un grupo de amigos, el aspecto social es una de las razones por lo que lo hago. Hemos pasado muchas horas juntos en senderos, calles, montañas y ríos, Sí, ríos, lagos, charcos, lluvia, nieve, hielo, lo que quieran. hace unos años, fuimos como siempre a hacer la corrida del fin de semana  a el Lago Elk/Beaver acá en la ciudad. Tiene un circuito de 10 km alrededor de los dos lagos y hay también algunos senderos extra que se pueden agregar. Había estado lloviendo muchísimo  en Victoria las semana anteriore y empezamos contentos porque sabíamos que íbamos a encontrar barro. (Si, saltamos en los charcos como chiquitos cada vez que podemos; la segunda foto no es de ese día si no de otro día, como para que se den una idea). Después de más o menos 1.5 km llegamos a una parte que estaba un poco inundada.... Creíamos que era sólo un poco pero después vimos que el perro no caminaba si no que nadaba! Seguimos al perro y terminé con agua hasta la cintura! Nunca habíamos visto tanta agua y barro es ese sendero! Después de salir de la peor (o mejor) parte nos sacamos esta foto y hace mucho que la quería pintar. Estábamos super embarrados, muertos de frío pero matándonos de risa. Fue una de las mejores corridas de mi vida. Gracias Amigos! Muchos buenos recuerdos! 

Esta es la número 30 y el fin de este desafío y estoy contenta y triste de que termine. Me costó al principio meterme con todo por el viaje pero estoy muy contenta con haberlo echo de nuevo. Creo que la práctica diaria, igual que el entrenamiento diario para una maratón, da resultados: ayuda al crecimiento y voy a seguir pintando casi a diario.  Estoy contenta de haber estado "en mi pieza" durante un mes!

#29 of 30: Waiting to Be Planted

These are some of the plants I bought the other day, the idea was to paint them, then plant them and enjoy them! They have been sitting on my work table and they caught my attention all grouped like that, just like at the nursery. I moved them to a better place to become the models, put a light on them and I started! I was mostly interested in the colour and the "busy-ness" of the composition and wanted to see if I could make it work. I was at the time listening to an interview with Artist Ken Auster. I had blocked in the colours and main shapes, was putting some darks and lights and then he started talking about painting from passion and not thinking. I realized that I was starting to think, to get tight and try to "correct" things. That is when I stepped back, looked and said, I think it is done. As I was trying to "finish" it, I was starting to lose the sponteaneous feel the piece had until then. So then, I stopped. :)

(I wish I could type in here and share with you  the scent those primroses were giving! Absolutely beautiful! I will plant them next week maybe, I am not done with them yet,)

Estas son algunas de las plantas que compré el otro día; la idea es que las iba a pintar y después plantar y disfrutar! Estaban todas agrupadas en mi mesa de trabajo y me llamaron la atención así como grupo, como cuando están en el vivero. Las moví a una mesa donde se convirtieron en modelos, les puse una luz y empecé. Estaba especialmente interesada en los colores y en la cantidad de información que había y quería ver si podía hacer funcionar esa composición. En ese momento estaba escuchando a una entrevista con un artista llamado Ken Auster. Había bloqueado los colores  y las formas principales, estaba poniendo más sombras y luces y  Ken empezó a hablar de pintar con pasión y sin pensar. Me dí cuenta en ese momento que estaba empezando a pensar, a concentrarme en los detalles y a tratar de corregir cosas. Fue ahí cuando me retiré un poco, la miré y dije, "Me parece que está lista". Al tratar de "terminarla", estaba empezando a perder la espontaneidad que había logrado. Entonces paré. 

(Ojalá pudiera escribir y compartir con uds. el aroma que estaban largando las prímulas! Hermosísimo! Las voy a plantar la semana que viene tal vez, todavía no he terminado con ellas!)

#28 of 30: Purple Thought

Pansy in Spanish is "Pensamiento" which literally translated to English is "Thought". That is the reason for the title today: Purple Thought. (Just playing with words and languages)  This was a lot of fun to paint, pansies are beautiful, so small  and with so much stuff happening in there! The leaves were just a mumble jumble of green stuff which is what I painted. Many many years ago I painted a whole bunch of pansies in watercolours and I had forgotten how much fun they are!

En Inlgés Pensamiento (flor) se dice Pansy y en castellano pensamiento tiene 2 significados. Es por eso que en inglés el nombre de este cuadro es "pensamiento" (el proceso mental, que se dice Thought, espero que entiendan este juegos de palabras). Pintar esto hoy  fue muy divertido.  Los pensamientos son tan hermosos, tan pequeños y con tanto detalle! Las hojas eran un montón de formas verdes, todas desordenadas y fue eso lo que pinté. hace muchos muchos años pinté pensamientos en acuarelas y me había olvidado lo bueno que es pintarlos!

#27 of 30: Primula

After many days of accuracy, measuring and drawing I felt like some colour and fun! I had stopped at Canadian Tire to pick up some pansies and primroses. I had a pocket of about 50 minutes this morning before having to go out so I said ok, let's see where I get with it in only that time.  I was mostly interested in values and colour. It took me a good 10 minutes to find a composition that I liked and I just went for it. This is where I was at 40 minutes of painting. 

After I took the photograph and came back to it with fresh eyes a couple of hours later, I was happy with it. I liked the spontaneous strokes and the general feel of it. I still wanted to get it a bit cleaned up and correct some things. I think I may have lost some of the values I had achieved with the initial sketch but I dont  want to overwork it. It is clear to me after this painting that I need to get to know my reds. I was struggling with the transparent reds on my palette.... This all can only mean more small red paintings in the future :)  I like the composition the best about this painting. My apologies for the glare, the wet paint is hard to photograph (and in bad light too)

Después de muchos días de medidas, dibujo y precisión hoy tenía ganas de color y de algo mas relajado. Había parado en Canadian Tire para comprar unos pensamientos y unas prímulas. Tenía un rato de mas o menos 50 minutos esta mañana antes de tener que salir y me dije bueno, veamos hasta dónde llego en ese tiempo. Estaba especialmente interesada en claros y oscuros  y en color. Tardé como 10 minutos en encontrar la composición que quería y ahi me largué. La segunda foto es hasta donde habia llegado a los 40 minutos de pintar. 

Despuéss de que tomé la foto y volví con ojos frescos un par de horas después, estaba contenta con lo que había echo. Me gustaba la espontaneidad y el tono general pero me hacía falta limpiarla un poco y corregir algunas cosas. tal vez perdí algunos de los oscuros pero no quiero trabajarla demasiado. Me resulta claro, después de este cuadro que tengo que practicar mis rojos para conocer los pigmentos que tengo. Me costó usar unos pigmentos transparentes que tengo en la paleta. .... esto sólo quiere decir que pueden esperar pinturas rojas en el futuro! Lo que mas me gusta de este cuadro es la composición. Disculpas por el brillo, es dificil sacarle foto sin buena luz a la pintura mojada.

#26 of 30: Maiden Voyage (in progress)

Well.... I thought I could do a quickish rendition of this and I am heading in a good direction but I think I need to call it a day as I am starting to get sloppy. The reason for this today is that it is my husband's birthday and one of his greatest passions in life is sailing. So I thought I would try and do a study for a larger painting for him. Last year we bought a new boat and this is a shot of us bringing the boat from Vancouver to Victoria. We are just heading out in this photo with the north Shore Mountains behind us. The sky got really dark at one point and the water turned a beautiful green/blue colour (but there was no storm :)  I spent a lot of time on the drawing today, making sure I got the right perspective and proportions of everything and I would say it reads pretty well. BUT if I start just putting lines  and changing the shapes too much, the whole thing will fall apart. So I am far enough into it to post it as is and I will keep on working on it this week. I'll post the finished one when it is done!  Happy Birthday Sweetie! Love You!

Creí que iba a a poder hacer una rendición más o menos rápida hoy y me parece que voy bien encaminada pero estoy cansada y estoy a empezando a ponerme desprolija así que me parece mejor parar por el día. La razón de este cuadro hoy es que es el cumpleaños de mi esposo y una de sus grandes pasiones es la navegación. Por eso quise probar de hacer este estudio para un cuadro más grande para él. El año pasado compramos un velero nuevo y esta es una foto sacada cuando lo estábamos trayendo desde Vancouver a Victoria. Acabábamos de salir de Vancouver y esas son las montañas de la costa Norte que vamos dejando atrás. El cielo se puso oscuro en un momento y tornó el agua de un color verde azulado espectacular. Le dediqué mucho tiempo al dibujo hoy para asegurame de tener las proporciones y perspectiva correctas y me parece que está bastante bien pero si empiezo a poner líneas donde no hay o ha cambiar las formas se me va arruinar. Estoy lo suficientemente avanzada como para colgarlo y voy a seguirlo esta semana. Lo voy a publicar de nuevo acá una vez terminado. Feliz Cumple John! Te quiero mucho!

I bet you were waiting for glass and snowdrops right? Well, I thought something different would be a nice change of pace. I  have had this black Oriental tepot for many years and have thought about painting it many times but never have. Until today. It was kind of fun but challenging at the same time as the finish is neither opaque nor shiny and it does have little bumps that make these lines but only on the top half... I see that I need to correct a few things but I have ran out patience and energy today so I may do some adjustments tomorrow. I was concentrating mostly on the shapes, trying to get them accurate. I am pleased with the way it is turning out. Your comments are welcome!

Seguro que estaban esperando vidrio y campanitas no? Me pareció que necesitaba un cambio hoy. He tenido esta tetera oriental negra por muchos años y he pensado en pintarla varias veces pero nunca lo he echo. Hasta hoy. La disfruté pero fue difícil ya que no es ni brillante ni mate y tiene estos puntos que forman líneas pero sólo en la parte de arriba. Veo que tengo que corregir varias cosas pero hoy se me acabó la paciencia y las ganas así que tal vez haga esas correcciones mañana. Me concentré en especial en las formas , tratando de que estuvieran lo más precisas posibles. Estoy satisfecha con como está quedando. Sus comentarios son muy bienvenidos!

Well..... The snowdrops were sitting there for the whole morning watching the bottles being painted and they did not appreciate the fact that they were not included! So I had to put them into the next one! 

It was fun to do the bottles again, it was interesting how I went into painting them with a lot more confidence than the ones in the morning. The measurements and drawing took me a lot longer as I had to scale everything down but the colours took me a lot less time and work! I kind of wish I had changed the order of the line up just to make it more different from the previous painting but ..... There is always tomorrow! I may lose the edge of the table on the right, all the folds.... Or may not. It is also interesting to see how the whole feeling of the painting changes with the addition of the flowers, organic and alive.

Bien.... las Campanitas se pasaron la mañana  mirando cómo se pintaban las botellas y no estabn muy contentas que digamos! Así que tuve que incluirlas en la pintura de la tarde!

Disfruté mucho pintar las botellas está tarde porque fue interesante ver cómo las empecé con mucha más confianza que las de la mañana. Las medidas y el dibujo me llevó más tiempo ya que tuve que achicar todo pero los colores me llevaron menos tiempo y trabajo! Medio como que deseó haber cambiado el orden de las botellas simplemente para que fuera más diferente de la pintura anterior pero..... Siempre está mañana! Tal vez pierda los pliegues en la tela de la derecha y la haga seguir derecha .... O tal vez no. Es interesante también ver cómo cambia el tono general de la pintura al incluir las flores, figura orgánica y con vida.

So I wanted to get back to the bottles and I wanted to paint them more from a front view than above so I set them up and liked the composition right away. I also wanted to work on cloth which I have not had much experience with. Enjoyed creating this one. The blues were of course tricky to get, specially the aqua one, had to mix in quite a few blues there and it was a process of layering colour over colour. The one in the centre was the trickiest one. There were a few lost edges that I wanted to make sure stayed but every time I left them, it made it look off. I am pleased overall and onto the next one today, hopefully it works out and I get caught up!

Quería volver a las botellas y quería pintarlas desde adelante no desde arriba como he estado haciendo. Las puse en fila y me gustó la composición de entrada. Quería también trabajar con la tela ya que no tengo no tengo mucha experiencia con ese tema. Disfruté mucho del proceso con esta. Los azules por supuesto fueron complicados, especialmente el turquesa y fue cuestion de poner capas de distintos colores. La botella del medio fue la más difícil. Tenía "bordes perdidos" (que decimos en inglés)  que quería asegurarme que estuvieran pero si los dejaba se deformaba todo. Estoy satischa con esta pieza y me voy a hacer la segunda, para ver si me puedo poner al día!

#22 of 30: Ink Bottle and Snowdrops

I am stuck in the glass and snowdrops theme it seems and I don't mind that one single bit because I am enjoying it a lot! I wanted to try them on a different colour background to see how that affected the whole thing. I chose green and in this case used 2 different pieces of green cloth. This was one of those paintings that goes into its own direction right from the beginning so I got out of the way and let that happen! I wanted to go back to leaving the brushstrokes showing which I like so much. The challenge was the vase/bottle for sure, it has all those facets which made the shapes and colours inside very hard to believe. It is actually a very old ink bottle, part of my daughter's bottle collection. I liked the shadows as well as part of the whole thing.

Something that I am using more and more as a tool is the camera (on the iPad). Half way through the painting, I take a shot of it in progress and the minute I see it on the screen I see the things that need to be changed. Very useful tool. The annoying thing is when I think I am done, I photograph it, come to write the blog and once I put it on here, I go, oh no, I HAVE to go change THAT, once I thought it was finished!

Parece que estoy atrapada en el tema de vidrio y campanitas de invierno lo cual no me molesta en absoluto porque lo estoy disfrutando mucho! Quería probarlos con otro color de fondo para ver cómo eso afecta el resto. Elegí color verde y en este caso, 2 telas de distintos verdes. Esta fue una de esas pinturas que toman su propia dirección enseguida y lo que hice fue hacerme a un lado y dejar que ocurriera no más! Quería volver a dejar las pinceladas bien marcadas que me gusta tanto. El desafío hoy fue con seguridad la botella/florero, tiene todas seas caras o facetas que hacía que los colores y las formas fueran bastante difícil de creer. Esa botella es un tintero antiguo, parte de la collección de botellas de mi hija Camila. También me gustaron las sobras de las flores como parte de la composición  general. 

Una herramienta que estoy usando cada vez más es la cámara del IPad. En cualquier etapa, saco fotos del cuadro y apenas las veo en la pantalla puedo ver las cosas que tengo que corregir. Una herramienta muy útil. Lo que más da bronca es cuando creo que ya está listo, empiezo a escribir el blog y cuando subo la foto veo y digo: Oh No, TENGO que sí o si cambiar tal cosa cuando creía que ya estaba terminado!

I was debating what to paint today: glass, snowdrops, shells, a landscape from a photo? So I finally decided to start arrangiung some  bottles. It was looking a bit too boring so I went outside, cut a few snowdrops, put them in a bottle and in that way painted both: glass and flowers! I am pretty pleased with the way it turned out. Camila (my daughter) had some glass pebbles in the vase which added interest to the whole thing.I left on purpose  some of the drawing colour peeking through, Transparent Earth Orange, which is what I normally use.  I like the glow it adds. I also considered using a different background cloth but settled  for white to keep practising  white on white which turns into value and temperature studies.  Fun stuff! (Maybe the next one will be on different colour??)

Hoy estaba tratando de decidir qué pintar: vidrio, flores, caracoles, un paisaje de alguna foto? Finalmente decidí empezar a arreglar algunas botellas pero estaba un poco aburrido asi que fui afuera, corté una campanitas, las puse dentro de una de las botellas y de esa forma pinté las 2 cosas: vidrio y flores! estoy bastante satisfecha con como me quedó. Camila (mi hija) tenia una piedritas de vidirioo dnetro del florero que agregaron un poco de interés. Deje a propósito pedacitos del color que usé  para el dibujo que lo había  echo con el color que siempre uso, Naranja Tierra Transparente. Me gusta el tono que le da. Consideré usar un fondo de distinto color pero me quedé con blanco para de esa forma pintar blanco sobre blanco que se transforma en un ejercicio de valores y temperatura.  Cosas muy entretenidas! (Tal vez mañana sea en fondo de otro color??)

#20 of 30: January Shadows

I was on a roll today and went for a second painting to see if I can get caught up. Yesterday afternoon  I saw these snowdrops and they stopped me on my tracks. They were sitting in front of a terracota pot and with the sun shining on them they they casting these gorgeous shadows. The shadows are actually what interested me and caught my attention. I took some photos with my IPad (I use it ALL the time!)  and voilá, here is number 2 for the day.

It was interesting to tackle this one as I first drew and painted the flowers. Then after they were mostly in I started drawing the shadows. First I drew them without the orange/red from the pot, thinking that I would fill in the blanks with the pot colour. But after yesterday's experience I ended up painting the pot and then drawing them again with the darker value. Of course there was a fair bit of adjusting values afterwards but it was fun to see the plan come together. This is the great thing about this daily painting, we build up what we learn and we are hopefully learning from our mistakes! 

Only one behind now, I can do it, I can do it! :)

Las cosas estaban funcionando bien hoy por lo que hice una segunda pintura para ver si me pongo al día. Ayer vi estan Campanitas de Invierno y me pararon  en el acto. Estaban plantadas adelante de una maceta de terracota y con el sol formaban unas sombras maravillosas. Estas sombras son en realidad lo que me interesó y lo que me llamó la atención. Les saqué unas cuantas fotos con el IPad (que lo uso TODO el tiempo) y voilá, acá está la segunda del día. 

Fue interesante planear esta pintura ya que primero dibujé y pinté las flores. Después de que estaban ya bien encaminadas, primero dibujé las sombras sin pintar el naranja/rojo de la maceta, pensando que iba a "llenar los espacios" después con el color de la maceta. Pero después de la experiencia de ayer, decidí pintar primero la maceta y después dibujar las sombras de nuevo con el color más oscuro. Por supuesto que tuve que ajustar los claros y oscuros después pero fue muy bueno ver que el plan funcionó. Esto es algo muy bueno de estas pinturas diarias, los aprendizajes se acumulan todos los días y aprendemos de nuestros errores! 

Estoy atrás una sola ahora, yo puedo hacerlo, si que puedo! :)

Last week (second week of January, please note rest of Canada :) snowdrops were starting to pop up in my yard and I got VERY excited. I was waiting until they were a bit taller and here they are! Love this time of the year when everything starts sprouting, from now on, there is a succession of blooms in my yard and I can't wait to paint them all. 

That was not nice on my part, to point out that we have flowers here already, my apologies..... =D

La semana pasada (la segunda semana de Enero, tenga en cuenta esto el resto de Canadá por favor :) las "campanitas de Invierno" (esa es la traducción que encontré!) empezaron a aparecer en mi jardín y me puse re-contenta. Estaba esperando un poquito para que se pusieran más altas y acá están! Me encanta esta época del año cuando todo empieza a brotar. De acá en adelante hay una sucesión de flores y no puedo esperar a pintarlas a todas. 

Eso estuvo muy mal de mi parte, asegurame que supieran que ya tenemos flores, mis disculpas..... =D

#18 of 30: Arbutus Study

Yesterday I had done the drawing for 4 different forest and trees paintings. One was the one that didn't get  finished as it wasn't working out (but hasn't been wiped just quite yet, it may have a future....) This is one of the other drawings and I am happy I did it.... even when I am not thrilled with the results.

I follow a certain number of blogs which I read every morning. This morning lots of the ones I was reading kept coming back to the fact that we need to keep studying, focusing on the things that are difficult for us so we can learn them by doing them. If we keep painting things we are good at, we won't improve and be better. (which is the ship I am on right now :)  I am very focused on putting in time at the easel and learning to be patient (which I am not!) as results will follow the action!

By the way, I use an app called Feedly for reading the blogs I follow. I have created lists, I add the blogs I want to follow and they show up whenever they are posted.  Great App!


Anyway, I am happy with the fact that I got the likeness of the trees to a degree (I think). I am not happy in that it got very fiddley, rough, with lines that are not fluid or refined and I was not able to keep the backgraound colour clean. I guess I was trying to learn too many things on such a little canvas.  I was trying to portray a sense of fog in the backrough as well which I am not entirely sure I achieved... I may go back to it and see if I can refine some of the shapes (I probably need to go to the art supply store first though, I prefer to use larger brushes and I dont even own too many thinner ones which is what I needed for some super thin lines)


All in all, I learnt a lot  which  means then a good day!

Ayer había echo los dibujos para 4 cuadros de bosques y árboles. Uno fue el que no terminé ayer porque no funcionaba (no lo he borrado del todo todavia, puede llegar a tener futuro) Este es otro de los dibujos y estoy muy contenta con haber pintado esto hoy.... aunque no esté demasiado contenta con los resultados.


Sigo una cierta cantidad de Blogs que leo todas las mañanas. Esta mañana, muchos de los que lei volvían a lo mismo: tenemos como artistas que seguir estudiando y enfocando en lo que nos resulta difícil para aprender. Si pintamos todo el tiempo cosas que nos resultan fáciles nunca vamos a avanzar y mejorar (y es ese el barco en el estoy subida en este momento :) Estoy poniendo mis energías en poner  horas en el atril y aprender a ser paciente (que no soy) ya que la acción va a significar resultados!
Para seguir todos los blogs uso una App que se llama Feddly, he creado listas de los distintos temas  y me aprecen cuando tienen algo nuevo. Es una gran App!

Entonces es por todo eso que estoy satisfecha con algunas cosas:  en que logré captar el espíritu del árbol en cierto grado (creo) (Es un árbol hermoso similar a los arrayanes que tenemos en Bariloche en el sur de Argentina). Pero no estoy contenta en que está trabajado de más, las lineas no son fluidas y no pude mantener el color de atrás limpio. Estaba tratando de mostrar niebla (que no se si lo logré) Tal vez le dedique mas tiempo para ver si puedo refinarlo un poco (pero voy a tener que ir a comprar pinceles mas finitos! prefiero pinceles mas gruesos y ni siquiera tengo unos tan finos!

Como conclusión: Aprendi mucho que entonces significa un buen día!

Again today I started with one canvas and one idea, worked at it for a quite a while and in the end I abandoned it, put that canvas aside and started with something fresh. 

This is a shot of the Saanich Península and Bazan Bay in Vancouver Island (where I live) from Sydney Island, about 15 away from our marina. We had gone out for a sail for the afternoon and it was a beautiful day with some very interesting cloud formations. We are so very fortunate to live in such a beautiful place!

Pretty happy with it, simple and it worked. 

My apologies for the photograph, I can't take one in this light tonight without the shine of the wet paint.

Hoy de nuevo empecé con un lienzo y una idea, trabajé bastante tiempo en eso y no funcionaba así que al final lo abandoné y empecé con una idea nueva.

Esta imagen es de la Península de Saanich y la Bahía Bazán en la  Isla de Vancouver (en la que yo vivo) desde la isla de Sidney, aproximadamente a 15 minutos de la marina donde tenemos el velero. Habíamos salido a navegar una tarde, era un día hermoso y había unas formaciones de nubes muy interesantes. Tenemos mucha suerte de vivir en un lugar tan hermoso!

Estoy bastante contenta con como quedó, simple, pero funciona. 

Mis disculpas por la foto, no puedo sacar una esta noche sin el brillo de la pintura fresca. 

#16 of 30: Bottles

This is the other set up I had yesterday which I didn't use.  It Is just a VERY SMALL sample of my daughter's bottles collection.  I could (and will) paint so many paintings just from those! I started it with a bit of fear as I was afraid I would get too fussy with it and overwork it. The hardest thing was to determine in some cases what the true local colour was due to all the transparencies and layers. It was fun though to block in the big shapes and then just slowly but surely find the smaller shapes in them. I am fairly pleased with the outcome and with my new exploration of glass. :)

I should add that I only had just over an hour to work on it. I am happy about not haven't had too much time to devore to it as I could have kept on refining it forever but just as yesterday I prefer the fresher look.

Este es el otro arreglo que tenía ayer que no usé. Es una PEQUEÑA parte de la collección de botellas de mi hija. Podría pintar tantos cuadros con ellas!!  (esa es mi intención). Lo empecé con un poco de temor ya que tenía miedo de quedarme atrapada en los detalles y trabajarla demasiado. Lo más difícil fue determinar en muchos casos el color local de algunas de las piezas debido a las transparencias y a las distintas capas de vidrio. La mejor parte fue bloquear las formas principales y después empezar a desmenuzar las formas más pequeñas dentro de las grandes. Estoy bastante satisfecha con el resultado y con mi nueva exploración del vidrio. :)

Debería agregar que solamente tenía un poquito más de una hora para pintar esto. Estoy muy contenta con eso ya que podría haber seguido poniendo detalles pero prefiero que quede más espontánea. 

#15 of 30: Sheashells Study

I was hoping to get caught up today as again I had a long nice beautiful day devoted to just painting. I started with one more try for a tulip painting and the composition was not working at all....I knew that from the beginning but I liked the arrangement and tried to make it fit into the format I had anyway. Well..... You probably know how that ended. Wiped. Twice. The afternoon was well into its way and I made a complete switch: Got a completely different arrangement (I actually ended up with 2 new arrangements and may use the other one tomorrow) and started very confidently on this seashells study. Living on the coast here, I have collections of seashells scattered through the yard which of course I picked because they had something interesting to paint!  But today it was actually the first time I painted shells and I loved it! It was a study on white as well, because everything was white but of course I ended up with the most beautiful range of greys. I had used Transparent Earth Orange for the drawing and that sort of contaminated  the whole thing and I totally ran with it as I love the warmth it gave the piece. I hadn't toned the canvas for this one which I usually do.  The lesson today is: if something feels wrong from the get-go, just don't do it! Why try to force it and make something good out of something that never had any potential! I could spend a while longer on this one just correcting some details but I don't want it to lose its freshness. Hope you like it.

 Hoy esperaba ponerme al día ya que de nuevo tenía todo un día largo hermoso para pintar. Empecé con otra toma distinta de un tulipán y la composición no funcionaba para nada..... Sabía eso de entrada pero como me gustaba la idea que tenía y traté de que me entrara en el formato que tenía. Bueno.... Ya saben como terminó eso. Borrada. Dos veces. Ya estaba entrada la tarde e hice un cambio radical: Puse un arreglo completamente diferente (Armé 2 en realidad, tal vez use el otro mañana) y empecé con mucha confianza con este estudio de conchas marinas. Al vivir sobre el mar tengo una colección grande de caracoles y conchas marinas en recipientes en el patio por ejemplo. (Por supuesto cada una de ellas fue elegida porque tenían algo interesante para pintar!). Hoy fue en realidad la primera vez que pinté una y me encantó. También fue un estudio de blanco: todo el arreglo era blanco y por supuesto terminé con los tonos más hermosos de grises. Había usado Naranja Tierra Transparente (un color en particular) para hacer el dibujo y ese color "contaminó" todo lo que me dio una tonalidad muy cálida para la pieza en general que me gusta mucho. No había pintado el lienzo con ningún color de base que normalmente hago. La lección del día es: si algo no funciona desde el comienzo, abandonarlo rápido! Para qué tratar de forzar alto para que sea bueno si nunca tuvo futuro en realidad! Podría pasarme otro buen rato corrigiendo algunos detalles per no quiero que pierda la espontaneidad que tiene.
