Continuing on this virtual trip, we come back to the heart of Tuscany at Il Borgo di Gebbia that I mentioned a few posts ago. We spent a very relaxing afternoon and evening enjoying the views from this special place. Looking at it now on the computer and the blog, I think I will add a pot with greens on the left for balance or make the bright green bushes higher to achieve that. Too late now to go do it and photgraph again. That is the magic of being an artist, I am able to change things to my liking!

I am behind 2 paintings now :( but family comes first. My kids have changed school this past week and the transition has taken up a lot of my time. Hopefully things will be bck to a regular routine soon!

Siguiendo e este viaje virtual, volvemos al corazón de la Toscana en Il Borgo di Gebbia que mencioné hace unos días. Pasamos una tarde muy tranquila disfrutando las vistas de este lugar tan especial. Ahora que veo la imagen en la computadora y en el blog, creo que mañana voy a agregar una maceta con verdes a la izquierda para tener mas balance o tal vez haga que los arbustos detrás de la cerca sean mas altos para lograr lo mismo. Ahora es demasiado tarde para hacerlo y fotografiar de nuevo. Esa es la magia de ser artista, puedo cambiar las cosas como quiero! :)

Estoy retrasada dos cuadros :( pero la familia viene primero que nada. Mis hijos han cambiado de escuela esta semana y la transición  ha ocupado mucho de mi tiempo. Seguro que pronto vamos a entrar en rutina!

Today we are going up Lago Di Como which is a beautiful area in the north of the country next to Switzerland. Our home base in Italy was Como as my brother, wife and new baby live there so we got to explore the city itself and lots of nearby towns. (Thank you Family!!!) There are absolutely gorgeous villas on the lake, some built by powerful and wealthy families once upon a time. Nowadays some been turned into apartments or hotels, some are owned by the city and used for events and lots are just privately owned.  This view is in a town called Argegno where we stopped to have lunch (pizza of course!)
I did not have time to finish this one, I will do it tomorrow and post it again.

Hoy vamos a pasear por el Lago Di Como que es una zona muy hermosa en el norete del país muy cerca de Suiza. Nuestra "base de operaciones" en Italia era la ciudad de Como  ya que mi hermano, su esposa y su nuevo bebé viven allá. Eso nos permitió recorrer bien la ciudad y muchos de los pueblos cercanos. (Gracias Familia!!!) Hay unas casas espectaculares sobre el lago, algunas han sido construídas hace mucho tiempo por familias poderosas y adineradas. Hoy en día muchas de ellas han sido tranformadas en departamentos u hoteles, otras estan en manos del municipio y se usan par eventos especiales y hay muchas que son propiedades privadas. Esta vista en particular es en un pueblo llamado Argegno donde paramos a almorzar (pizza por supuesto!)
No he tenido tiempo de terminarlo hoy, voy a hacer eso mañana y lo incluyo en el próximo post.

We are still in Tuscany, actually we are in the heart of it! We stayed this one night at this beautiful spot between Florence and Rome. We spent a very relaxing afternoon close to Civitella in Val di Chiana at this excellent B&B called Il Borgo di Gebbia. (If you go to Italy and you are looking for a peaceful spot, do call them) The view was amazing, dinner cooked by our hosts was incredible and of course I took a few pictures. Here is a painting from one of them. Hope you like it!  Grazie Mille Loredana & Marino!

Todavía estamos en el medio de la Toscana! Una noche paramos en este hermoso lugar entre Florencia y Roma. Pasamos una tarde muy placentera cerca de Civitella in Val di Chiana

en esta hostería excelente llamada  Il Borgo di Gebbia (Si van a Italia y están buscando un lugar muy tranquilo, llamenlos!). La vista era espectacular, la cena que nos cocinaron nuestros anfitriones fue perfecta  y por supuesto saqué un montón de fotos, acá está lo que pinté de una de ellas. Espero que les guste! We are staying in Tuscany for one more day as it is very beautiful :) I wanted to try a different composition for this impression of sunflowers. I am not as happy with this rendition as I was with yesterday's but I am pressed for time. I actually painted it yesterday right after the other one as I need to bank a couple for the next few weeks.  :) I ended up not having time today and was glad I had done that yesterday!

Nos quedamos en la Toscana un día más ya que es tan hermosa :) Quise probar una composición diferente en esta impresión de girasoles. No estoy tan contenta con este como con el de ayer pero anduve con poco tiempo hoy. En realidad pinté este cuadrito ayer junto con el anterior ya que necesitaba tener algunos listos en reserva para esta próximas semanas cuando no tuviera tiempo :) Terminé usando ese extra hoy ya que me quedé sin tiempo!

Today we are taking a drive through Tuscany and we come across some beautiful sunflower fields. One of the things that really suprised me about Italy was how much "space" there was in between towns. I expected it all to be way more populated than it is. There is a LOT more agriculture than I imagined. They plant olive groves, grape vines and orchards everywhere they can and it is really beautiful.  Trying to stay loose, use big brushes and have fun which is what it is all about right?

Hoy vamos de paseo por la Toscana y nos encontramos con campos llenos de girasoles. Una de las cosas que me orpredió mucho en Italia fue la cantidad de "espacio" que hay entre los pueblos. Hay MUCHA mas agricultura de lo que me imaginaba, creía que toda Italia iba a ser mucho mas poblada de lo que es. Plantan olivares, viñas y huertos por todos lados y es realmente muy hermoso.
Sigo tratando de mantener la espontaneidad, usar pinceles grandes y divertirme, que de eso se trata no? 

Venice - #3 of 30

We have come back to the Venice area today!  It is such an incredible place, never seen anything like it. This view is of the Church of the Madonna della Salute from St Mark's Square area and it is quite an iconic sight of Venice I think.

I was pressed for time today and did this study with the idea of coming back to it later on but won't get to it today.  I am however fairly pleased, I pushed myself to use bigger brushes in order to not get too stuck on the details.  Again, I was after the impression of it more than an architectural rendering.

Hemos vuelto a la zona de Venecia hoy! Es un lugar tan increíble, nunca había estado en un lugar así. Esta es una toma de la Iglesia de la Madonna della Salute desde la zona de la Plaza de San Marco, es una toma bastante icónica de Venecia creo.

Hoy estuve con poco tiempo e hice este estudio con la idea de volver y terminarlo mas tarde pero no voy a poder hoy. Estoy sin embargo bastate contenta, me empujé a usar pinceles grandes para evitar detalles. Quería como ayer mostrar mas una impresión que otra cosa. Hacia donde iremos mañana??

Corniglia - #2 of 30

So today we are going to Corniglia which is on the West coast on the Italian Riviera. I had had these places on my wish list for a long long time and when I saw that we would be driving by I took the chance to spend an extra couple of days there and explore the CinqueTerre. Oh my Gosh! Unbelievable place: 5 small towns, tucked in the mountains for the last several centuries with no easy access. You can either get to them by boat, by train or you can drive but have to hike down as the roadway is at the top of the mountain ridge you see there. They are,  due to that,  quite self sufficient and they have carved every possible spot on the mountain to farm. Quaint as quaint can be, they are very beautiful. We saw Corniglia from the boat as it is the only one that is not built all the way down to the water and the boat wasn't stopping there. 

(This was the second painting of the day, the first one was a wipe today! but I am pleased with this one as it a very fresh impression of what I saw)

Entonces hoy vamos a Corniglia que está sobre la costa oeste en lo que se llama la Riviera Italiana. Hace mucho que tenía este lugar en mi lista de lugares para visitar y cuando vi que ibamos a pasar cerca, tomé la oportunidad para explorar Cinque Terre.  Que lugares increíbles: 5 pueblos escondidos desde hace varios siglos en el medio de la montaña con acceso restringido. Se puede llegar por barco, por tren or si en auto, hay que estacionar arriba en la montaña que se ve en la pinatura. Debido a eso son bastante auto-suficiente y aprovechan todo los espacios posibles para la agricultura. Muy pintorescos y hermosos! Vimos Corniglia desde el mar ya que es el único de los pueblos que no está construído hasta el mar y el barco no paraba ahí. 

(Esta fue la sugunda pintura hoy, la otra fue una intento fallido! pero estoy contenta con esta ya que es una impresión muy espontanea de lo que vi)

Back in the saddle I am! And rusty I am too!! :) 

After 5 weeks in Italy and a few weeks on the boat befre and after Itay, I came back home to work on some acrylics that I wanted to have finished for submitting to a show.  With all that, Sep 1 and the start of the Sep 2014 30-day challenge got here before I knew it! I decided to pick a theme (as suggested by Leslie) and it is "Come travel with me" showing images from some of the places I have been to in the last few years. Traveling is for sure a passion of mine; love visiting new places, learning about other cultures and customs. Italy was absolutely gorgeous, everyone should visit it at least once in their lifetime and this is where we begin our travels this month.

First we are stopping at "Burano", one of the islands next to Venice. It is the capital of "lace", all the stores there sell anything lace. But the most interesting thing is that all the houses and boats are painted in extremely bright colours. I was standing taking it all in with a huge smile on my face looking at those houses and all the colour around me!

Y acá estoy de nuevo lista para otra ronda! 

Despues de 5 semanas en Italia y otras en el velero volví y trabajar mas que nada en un par de acrílicos que tenía que terminar para presentar en una muestra en Septiembre. La cosa es que con todo eso el 1 de septiembre y el comienzo del desafío de 30 días llegó antes de que me diera cuenta! Decidí elegir un tema esta vez (como sugere Leslie Saeta): "Veni y viaja conmigo!" que va a consistir en imágenes de algunos de mis viajes de los últimos años. Me encanta viajar; conocer lugares, costumbres y culturas nuevas es una de mis pasiones. Italia es absolutamente hermosa, todos deberían ir aunque sea una vez en la vida y es ahi donde comenzamos el vaje de este mes.

La primera parada es "Burano", una de las islas al lado de Venecia. Es la capital del encaje, hay muchos negocios que venden solamente encaje. Pero para mi lo más interesante fue que todas las casas están pintadas de colores muy brillantes y todas distintas. Estaba parada mirando todo con una sonrisa enorme en la cara por todo el color que había alrededor.

Cabin for sale (#91 of 100)

We spent the night at Dol Cove, a small bay in Hardy Island at the mouth of Jervis Inlet. It is right next to a Marine Park called Musket Island Marine Park. There are some granite quarries in this bay where lots of the granite for some of the big buildings in Victoria and Vanvouver came from, I am not sure if any if these are still operational. 

I had started the evening we got there painting the small little cabin on that tiny island I ended including in this painting, but only the cabin with mountain behind. But after a while of labouring I had to just let it go and wipe it away, it was just not working. The following morning I decided to have another go even when the light wasn't as nice as it had been the previous evening. I started out as a 37 minute exercise because we had to get ready to leave and I didn't have endless time. I ended up using way more than 37 minutes but I am very pleased with the result. I like the brush work as well as the palette I ended up with. It's my favourite from the sailing trip. 

So overall I ended up with having done 6 paintings, one wipe. Didn't paint every day as I had intended when I set off on the trip but still better than nothing!! :)

I want to title this one "Cabin for Sale" as it was really for sale in the middle of nowhere. But I was to give more emphasis to the cabin itself so I am going to add a brush stroke on the cabin roof  to make it a bit more prominent but only when I get home.... I am in Italy now, absolutely loving it, walking in paintings all the time as everywhere I look there is a painting. More on Italy soon, and who knows, maybe a sketch or two. Didn't bring my paints, only some pens and watercolours.

Below is a map with the itinerary of the sailing trip. I know it is not great but it is something! From Jervis Inlet we went to Gibsons where we spent the night and from there we crossed back to the Gulf Islands. Spent the last night in Ganges, Saltspring Island and then back home!

Pasamos la noche en una bahía pequeña llamada Dol Cove en la Isla Hardy que queda  en la boca de Jervis Inlet. Hay canteras de granito, de las cuales salió mucho del granito que se usó en grandes edificios en Victoria y Vancouver; la verdad que no se sí están en operación.

Había empezado el atardecer anterior cuando llegamos a pintar la cabaña que estaba en esa isla chiquita, sólo la cabaña con la montaña detrás. Pero después de un buen rato de trabajo tuve que decidir borrarla ya que no estaba funcionando. Decidí probar de nuevo a la mañana siguiente, variando un poco la composición. Lo empecé como uno de los ejercicios de 37 minutos ya que no tenía todo el tiempo del mundo, teníamos que prepararnos para irnos. Terminé usando mucho más de 37 minutos pero estoy satisfecha con como me quedó. Es mi preferida de las que pinté en este viaje.

Al final terminé pintado solamente 6, con una borrada. No pinté todos los dias come quería al principio pero es mejor que nada!

Quiero titular esta "Cabaña en venta" porque estaba a la venta en el medio de la nada. Voy a agregarle una pincelada más al techo cuando vuelva a casa para darle mas énfasis a la cabaña..... Estoy en Italia en este momento, disfrutando al máximo de cada momento y caminando todo el tiempo en cuadros ya que para cualquier lado que miro hay cuadros por pintar. Más sobre Italia dentro de poco si puedo y quién sabe, tal vez un par de sketchs. No traje las pinturas, sólo acuarelas.

Arriba hay un mapa del viaje en velero, no es lo mejor pero sirve para ver el itinerario. Desde  Jervis Inlet fuimos a Gibsons, de ahí cruzamos de nuevo hacia las islas. Pasamos una noche en Ganges en Saltspring Island y de vuelta a casa!

Along Malaspina Strait (#90 of 100)

We left Laura Cove and went to Cortes Island where I had all the intention of painting but didn't get to it unfortunately. We went for walks and a swim in the lake, had a visit with a family we know in one of the cabins on the point at Manson's Landing and enjoyed ourselves.  How very often time flies by and I don't get to do all the things I want to! The same thing ended up happening for the next couple of days. We headed to Campbell River after that to drop off our guests as they couldn't stay for the whole time us. It ended up being the perfect recipe, one week with guests and one week just our family. Saw the fireworks for July 1 there (Independance Day in Canada) and they were great! Our next stop was Lund again after some rough seas which were uncomfortable for me more than anything else (the captain was in his glory though) We then headed south towards Jervis Inlet. 

I painted this on the way to Jervis Inlet which is on the mainland across from Texada Island, sort of half way down. I had the time to paint and even though the scenery was much the same as what I had painted while going up, I decided to do it again. In this case I let lots of the orange underpainting peeking through and was interested in portraying the different temperatures and values in the mountain ranges.... It was fun to paint even I know it is not a masterpiece :)

Dejamos Laura Cove y fuimos a la Isla Cortés donde tenía todas las intenciones de pintar pero no pude al final. Fuimos a caminar y a nadar en un lago, nos visitamos con una familia que tiene una cabaña en el la bahía Manson's Landing y la pasamos bien. Tantas veces el tiempo vuela y no llego a hacer todo lo que tengo planeado!  Lo mismo ocurrió los dos días siguientes. Fuimos hacia Campbell River a dejar a nuestros invitados  ya que ellos no podían estar con nosotros las dos semanas completas. Terminó siendo la receta justa, una semana con invitados y una semana la familia sola. Vimos los fuegos artificiales para el 1 de Julio (el día de la independencia en Canadá) que estuvieron muy lindos. Nuestra próxima parada fue Lund de nuevo después de tener mares medios picados que fueron más que nada incómodos para mi (el capitán estaba en su gloria). De ahí nos fuimos hacia el sur para Jervis Inlet.

Pinté este cuadro mientras íbamos hacia Jervis Inlet que está en el continente al frente de la isla Texada, casi a la mitad de Texada. Tenía tiempo suficiente para pintar y aunque el paisaje era similar a lo que había echo en el primer cuadro, decidí hacerlo de nuevo. En este caso, dejé bastante del naranja de base a la vista y me interesaba mostrar las distintas temperaturas de color y los valores diferentes en las cadenas de montañas que nos da un poco la perspectiva.... Y si bien no es una obra maestra  fue divertido pintarla :)

Solitude (#89 of 100)

The second painting in Laura Cove came to be because I was very attracted to the rocks, their shapes and lines. That is what I concentrated on. In am Very hapoy with the way the rocks turned out, have to do something about the log sitting there on the left as it is bugging me right now. Again, I'll reasess once back in the studio. 

That morning, the other 2 boats on the cove left, leaving us the only boat there for the day and night. Very Strange in this area, as it is usually very crowded with boats being a destination for lots.  We started our trip just at the end of June and it is early in the season.

El segundo cuadro  en Laura Cove salió porque me atrajeron mucho las piedras, sus formas y sus líneas. Fue en eso en lo que me concentré. Estoy contenta con como salieron aunque tengo que hacer algo con ese tronco en la izquierda que me molesta mucho. Voy a decidir una vez que esté de vuelta en casa. 

Esa mañana los otros dos barcos en la bahía se fueron, dejándonos solos por el día y la noche. esto es muy raro en esta zona ya que es un lugar de destino para muchos. Empezamos el viaje en la última semana de Junio y eso marcó la diferencia. 

Sunlit (#88 of 100)

We got to Laura Cove in Desolation Sound Marine Park last Thursday June 26th after some sailing with the new spinnaker. It was very peaceful and warm as we were going with the wind. I was going up and down from the cockpit to the salon trying to find something on the charts when I misjudged the last step down and fell hard, bonked my head on a stool and spent the rest of the day with a nice egg on the side of my head. Everything seemed to be out of wack with my neck, jaw and back for a couple of days but I am fine after a few days. I still painted when we got to Laura Cove which meant it wasn't that serious! (Thankfully!)

The forecast called for high winds and rain that night so we were happy to be tucked away in this cove where we were very protected. It had been raining on and off the whole day and we decided to stay there for another night as winds were still high out there more in the open. Had a late pancake brunch, played games, read and painted. The boys checked the prawn trap and caught a red snapper so we had a great crab and fish pasta dinner. 

From the second we got there I wanted to paint a specific point, but when I set up, the boat kept turning and that point was out of my sight then. This is one of the challenges of painting from a boat, when at anchor other boats and ourselves keep moving which keeps things interesting (and sometimes frustrating). Another challenge are tides, sometimes you start painting things a certain way and soon the rock you were painting is half the size it was when you started! The one I wanted to paint may have to be done in the studio as I never got the chance to get it done! 

The first one in Laura Cove caught my eye as the sun was highlighting a patch of grass, some trees and the tops of some very geometrical rocks. I am pleased with how fresh I was able to keep it, I like the feel of it. I had the light in my eyes though and it made it difficult after a while to properly "see" the colours I was mixing.... I saw later when I had finished on that one of the rocks ended up quite a bit more purple than the others, I may change that once I see it in the studio when I am back.

Llegamos a Laura Cove en el Parque Marino Desolation Sound el jueves pasado 26 de Junio después de haber navegado un poco con la nueva vela spinnaker. Era muy cálido y tranquilo ya que íbamos en la misma dirección del viento. Estaba subiendo y bajando desde afuera al comedor cuando juzgué mal el último escalón y me caí feo, me golpeé la cabeza contra una banqueta y me pasé el resto del día con una huevo en el costado de la cabeza. Todo se me había sacudido, la espalda, la mandíbula y el cuello pero después de varios días estoy bien. Pinté una vez que ya estábamos instalados lo que quiere decir que no era tan serio entonces. (Por Suerte!)

El pronóstico era de vientos fuertes y lluvia esa noche así que estábamos muy contentos de estar en el resguardo de esta bahía donde estábamos muy protegidos. Llovió todo el día de a ratos y como había pronóstico de vientos para la noche siguiente decidimos quedarnos ahí otro día. Desayunamos tarde panqueques, jugamos juegos de mesa, leímos y pinté. Los varones sacaron langostinos y pescaron un pescado rojo que no se cómo se traduce así que esa noche tuvimos pasta con frutos de mar. :)

Apenas llegamos quería pintar una vista en particular pero una vez que armé todo, el velero había rotado y ese punto ya estaba fuera de mi visión. Este es uno de los desafíos cuando se pinta desde un velero, cuando se esta anclado, los otros barcos y nuestro velero rotan todo el tiempo y hace que las cosas se vean diferentes (que es bastante frustrante a veces). Otro desafío son las mareas: a veces uno empieza a pintar algo y en seguida la roca que uno estaba pintando se ha reducido a la mitad al subir la marea. Voy a tener que hacer de fotos el punto que quise pintar desde el principio ya que no pude hacerlo ahí!

La primer pintura que hice en Laura Cove me llamó la atención por el sol brillando sobre un poco de pasto, unos árboles y las puntas de unas piedras que eran muy geométricas. Estoy satisfecha con el resultado ya que no lo trabajé de más, esta bastante espontáneo y me gusta el sentimiento general del mismo. Tenía el sol en contra y se me hizo difícil después de un rato "ver" bien los colores que estaba mezclando.... Después  me dí cuenta al haber terminado que una de las piedras tiene mucho más violeta que las otras, tal vez cambie eso una vez que lo mire de nuevo una vez ya en casa. 

Northbound (#87 of 100)

Well, summer is here and sailing season is here too!

We left 2 days ago on a two-week sailing trip to Desolation Sound which is an area between the continent and the north area of Vancouver Island. We have done this trip twice before but this is the first time we are doing it by ourselves.  The last 2 times we did it with another family so it was 2 sailboats. The scenery is spectacular, the mountains MUCH higher than what we are used to in the Gulf Islands, the water is warmer as the tides don't change as much in these areas and there are long and deserted inlets where we will drop anchor to spend the night, go for hikes and just enjoy the peace and quiet. Many times you go for a short walk and find the most beautiful lakes and views in the middle of nowhere. I must add that for one of the weeks we have two extra teenagers aboard. That makes 4 teenagers, a dog, hubby and myself. So far so good, touch wood!  I will write a bit about the sailing trip as well as my painting here, just skip ahead if it is too much for you. :)

The first day we went from Victoria to Montague in Galiano Island. Yesterday we went from Montague, crossed the Straight of Georgia to Secret Cove, a gorgeous little inlet where you can see mostly summer houses on the north part of the Sechelt Peninsula. Both nights have been so so calm that we barely felt we were on a boat. (Usually this is what happens, the wind dies down in the late afternoon and evenings are extremely calm). 

Today was a long day of motoring as we had wind on our nose and we had a long stretch to cover, from Secret Cove to Lund where we are spending the night. Lund is the gateway to Desolation Sound, the last stop on the continent where you can find a store, restaurant, laundry, showers, gas and water. 

I am planning to do at least a painting a day. Today's challenge was that we were on the go so I picked a piece of land that looked interesting with some rocky islets in front, put that in right away and then did the rest. I was mostly interested in the sky, there were these very fluffy clouds low enough to cover the tops of the mountains. It is the first time in quite a while that I use oils and I enjoyed it! Looking forward to the next few days!

A llega do el verano y con eso la temporada de navegación también!

Hace 2 días comenzamos un viaje en el velero de dos semanas a Desolation Sound que es una zona entre el continente y el norte de la isla de Vancouver. Hemos echo este viaje ya 2 veces hace años pero esta es la primera vez que lo hacemos solos; las dos veces anteriores lo hicimos con otra familia que iban en su propio velero. Los paisajes son espectaculares, las montañas MUCHO más altas de lo que estamos acostumbrados las Gulf Islands, el agua mucho más cálida ya que en esta zona las mareas no cambian tanto y hay ensenadas larguísimas en las que normalmente pasamos la noche. Tiramos el ancla,  hacemos caminatas y disfrutamos de la paz y tranquilidad de la zona. Muchas veces después de una corta caminata, se encuentran laguitos y vistas hermosas en el medio de la nada. Debo agregar que durante la primera semana llevamos dos amigos de los chicos como invitados. Es decir que tenemos a bordo 4 adolescentes, una perra, mi esposo y yo. Hasta ahora todo bien, toquemos madera! Voy a escribir un poquito sobre el viaje además de la pintura en estos días, no hay problemas si saltean algunos párrafos! :)

El primer día fuimos desde Victoria a Montague en la isla Galiano. Ayer fuimos desde Montague, cruzamos el Estrecho de Georgia hasta Secret Cove. Una ensenada hermosa donde había mayormente casas de fine de semana en el Norte de la península de Sechelt). Por suerte las dos noches han sido tan tan tranquilas que no parecía estar en el velero. (Normalmente no hay nada de viento en los atardeceres)

Hoy fue un día largo con el motor prendido y sin navegar ya que teníamos el viento en contra y había mucho camino que recorrer desde Secret Cove a Lund donde estamos pasando la noche. Lund es el portal hacia Desolation Sound, la última parada sobre el continente donde se pueden comprar provisiones, agua, nafta, hay duchas y un lavandería. 

Tengo planeado hacer por lo menos un cuadro por día. El desafío de hoy fue el echo que estábamos en marcha así que elegí un lugar en tierra que estaba más o menos interesante, puse esa información primero que nada y después me dediqué al cielo que era lo que más me importaba. Había nubes muy mullidas que cubrían la parte de arriba de las montañas. Hoy fue la primera vez que use óleos es bastante tiempo y los disfruté mucho. Estoy entusiasmada con los próximos días!

Reflections (#86 of 100) and Happy Dance!!

I am very, very happy to announce that "the big monster" I have been working on got accepted into Sooke Fine Arts this year!! Yes!!! Big smile!! I am doing a happy dance!! Sooke Fine Arts is one the biggest juried shows on Vanvouver Island and it was one of my goals to submit to it this year. I only say "submit to" and not "get in" as a goal because you never know with juried art shows; I did my part, put the work in (and it took a few hours!) and I am very happy with the acceptance!

I had started this canvas a few years ago and due to lack of time had never finished it. It is the largest piece I have worked on (48x60) and I learnt a ton in the process. This canvas had a mind of its own from the get go, I wanted it to go in a certain direction and things wouldn't work, so after much frustration  several times  I said to myself: "Stop fighting it, this is the way this one will be".  It has a much more realistic look than I wanted it to have.

My new found love from this painting is Cadmium Orange. It gave me the "warm glow" I was after in some areas when mixed with Dioxazine Purples and different amounts of white and/or ultramarine blue.

The show runs July 25 to August 4 at Seaparc Leisure Centre in Sooke and unfortunately I won't be in town for it, (we are going to Italy!!!! Yes, I know, bummer eh?) Put it on your calendars and be sure to stop by if you can!

Estoy muy, muy contenta de poder anunciar que "el monstruo" en el que he estado trabajando duro ha sido aceptado en la muestra Sooke Fine Arts este año!! Si!!! Gran sonrisa acá!!  Bailecito de alegría!! Esta es una de las muestras juradas más grandes en la Isla de Vancouver y era una de mis metas presentar algo para ser considerado para la exhibición. Noten que sólo digo "presentar" y no "ser aceptada" como meta ya que uno nunca sabe con las muestras juradas; yo hice mi parte, trabajé mucho (y me llevó bastantes horas!) y estoy muy contenta con la aceptación!

Había comenzado este lienzo hace muchos años y por falta de tiempo nunca lo había terminado. Es la pieza más grande que he echo y aprendí muchísimo en el proceso. Este lienzo tomó sus propias decisiones desde el comienzo. Yo quería llevar las cosas en cierta dirección y no salían para nada así que después de mucha frustración algunos días me dije: "Dejá de luchar, este va a ser de este modo". Es mucho más realista de lo que yo quería. 

Un nuevo amor que encontré en este cuadro es el Naranja Cadmin. Me dió el "reflejo cálido" que buscaba cuando lo mezclaba con Morado Dioxazine y diferentes cantidades de blanco y/o Azul Ultramarino. 

La muestra es desde el 25 de julio hasta el 4 de agosto en el Centro de Recreation Seaparc en Sooke  y desafortunadamente no voy a estar en Victoria para esa fecha (Vamos a Italia!!! Si, ya sé, que lastima que vamos a Italia no? ) Marquen la fecha en sus calendarios y pasen a verla si pueden!

Este es uno que pinté en Agsto del año pasado y no había incluído acá.

Wow, so much has happened since my last post. Days are going by too fast to get everything done!!

The week before last I went to Vancouver for a 3 day workshop with Liz Wiltzen and, as expected, I did not come home disappointed. Liz is a great artist and instructor! Some of the things we covered on the course, I had already studied or heard of before in other workshops or at other times (which does not mean that those things had sunk in anyway!!) I think that my painting is like stacking blocks..... Every time I cover a certain aspect or subject I can go deeper and build on things I already know (or thought I knew). I am able to see things differently and we are reminded of things we knew but forgot to put into practise.  I am still processing everything we covered. Again, I highly recommend you take a workshop with Liz if you ever can.

Even though I haven't been posting I have been painting like a mad woman. I've been working on my very large canvas which has been a roller coaster, some days I love it, some days I hate it.....It is almost done and then I'll show you. I have started a crow painting that I want to donate to a fundraiser and have another one on the go (boats again).

Swiftsure was also here, a sailing race that happens here in Victoria every May. I went to the start line and I took, in about an hour and a half,  592 photos! Talk about having reference material there! I should be able to find a couple that may work for a good painting.  As a matter of fact I have already roughed one on a 24x48 canvas! I am shooting for having them done by next week.


I don't want this post to get super long but this was also a big event last week. I was deeply sadenned by Robert Genn's passing. We all knew it was coming but it was truly sad when it did happen. Mr Genn was, unbeknown to him, a great influence on me. I will be forever grateful for all his insightful letters which on more than one occassion were "written specifically for me". Many times it seemed  they were EXACTLY what I needed to hear that day. I know lots of artists feel the same way. In order to honour him, I did what he said we should all do: I went to my room and painted. He is already missed. (If you don't know about Robert Genn's Twice-a-week letter, you can still get them as older ones (still applicable) and new ones written by his daughter Sara are being mailed now. Go to "The Painter's Keys" and subscribe to the emails. Highly recommend them!

Wow, han pasado tantas cosas desde la última vez que escribí. Los días pasan demasiado rápido para hacer todo lo que quiero hacer!

Hace dos semanas, fui a Vancouver  a un curso de 3 días con Liz Wiltzen y como yo esperaba, no volví desilusionada. Liz es una instructora y artista excepcional! Algunas de las cosas que vimos en el curso ya había cubierto en otros cursos (o ya había escuchado de esas cosas sin entrar en profundidad).  Creo que mi pintura puede compararse con bloques de construcción. Cada vez que aprendo algo nuevo, esos descubimientos pueden ir sobre los bloques que ya he establecido y puedo  ir a distintos niveles de profundidad. Veo las cosas de forma distinta (Y todavía estoy procesando todo lo que aprendimos en el curso!) Ya he dicho esto en otros posts: Recomiendo mucho un curso con Liz si alguna vez pueden.

A pesar de no haber estado escribiendo sí he estado pintando a lo loco. He seguido trabajando en el lienzo enorme que ha sido una montaña rusa, algunos días me encanta, otros días la oido.... Ya está casi terminado y cuando esté se los muestro. He empezado uno con cuervos para donar a una cena de recaudación de fondos y tengo otra mas empezada en un lienzo de 61x122 cm. (Veleros de nuevo).

Hablando de veleros, Swifsure  fue hace dos fines de semanas, una regata que ocurre todos los años en Mayo. Fui a la línea de largada y en una hora y media saqué 592 fotos!! Seguro que voy a poder encontrar una o dos fotos buenas para pintar! La verdad es que ya tengo una empezada, quisiera poder terminarla para la semana que viene.

No quiero que este post se haga tan largo pero tengo que mencionar un evento importante la semana pasada. Estuve muy triste por la muerte de Robert Genn. Sabíamos que iba  a pasar en cualquier momento pero de todas maneras fue muy triste cuando de verdad llegó el momento. Robert Genn fue una gran influencia para mí. Voy a estar siempre agradecida por sus cartas que muchas veces fueron escritas "especialmente para mí" ya que muchos días era EXACTAMENTE lo que yo necesitaba escuchar. Sé que muchos artistas comparten estos pensamientos. En su honor, hice lo que él siempre decía que había que hacer: andá a  tu pieza y pintá! Se lo va a extrañar mucho con seguridad. (Si no saben de las cartas que Robert Genn manda 2 veces por semana, todavía pueden recibirlas ya que se va a seguir mandando cartas viejas y nuevas escritas por Sara Genn, la hija de Robert.  Vayan a "The Painters Keys" y  pueden anotarse para recibirlas. Las recomiendo!

This is an acrylic I had started last October and finished in the last few weeks, before I wen to La Conner, Wa. I don't specifically remember where the photo was taken,  it could be ANYWHERE around here. Views like this one are what you see so often from land and from the water around the Gulf Islands. We are very fortunate to live in such a beautiful area. I am pleased with the way the painting came along, I like the general feel of it. There is something bugging me in the painting now that I see it here on the blog but I  can always go back and change it! (Won't tell you so it doesnt start bugging you!!) 

I am very excited today as I am in Vancouver at the moment to take a workshop with Liz Wiltzen. We will be learning about Painting Dynamic Landscapes for the next 3 days and I am ready! I took a workshop with her last year on Daily Painting which I thoroughly enjoyed,  she was an excellent instructor and is an outstanding artist. 

(Progress report on the large canvas: doing well, have paint all over the canvas now, had to CORRECT lots of the drawing, time now to start refining shapes and putting thicker paint on some areas :) but not until Friday when I am back home!

Este es un acrílico que había empezado en octubre del año pasado y lo terminé hace unas semanas  antes de ir a La Conner, Wa. No recuerdo específicamente dónde tomé esta foto, pero puede ser en cualquier lugar por acá. Vistas como estas es lo que se ve desde tierra y desde mar en toda esta área de las Islas del Golfo. Tenemos mucha suerte de vivir en un lugar tan hermoso. Estoy satisfecha con como quedó el cuadro. Me gusta el tono general que tiene. Hay algo que me molesta ahora que la veo acá en el blog, siempre puedo volver a casa y cambiarlo (no les voy y decir qué para que no les empiece a molestar a uds!!)

Hoy estoy muy entusiasmada porque estoy en Vancouver donde voy a tomar un curso con Liz Wiltzen. vamos a prender sobre Paisajes con dinamismo durante los 3 próximos días y estoy lista!! Tomé un curso con Liz en año pasado sobre Pinturas Diarias, ella es una artista y instructora realmente excelente. 

Informe sobre el lienzo enorme que estoy pintando: va bien, ahora ya tengo pintura sobre toda la superficie, tuve que corregir el dibujo bastante y ahora tengo que empezar a refinar algunas de las formas y poner más pintura en algunas áreas. :) Pero no hasta el viernes que es cuando vuelvo a casa.

Lemon Juice (#83 of 100) and tips for working large?

"Lemon Juice" was painted last August under the guidance of Barbara Callow at an oil painting workshop I took.  I had clearly forgotten to post this one! These little Meyer Lemons were tiny, sitting on my window sill, I chose to paint them waaaay larger than life from a photo I had taken. I was pleased with how the painting turned out and I learnt many tricks from Barbara, a wonderful artist you should check out. 

I am behind with posting as I have several paintings that are finished but have not made it to the blog. Where do the hours in the day go sometimes??

I am painting a very large piece at the moment,  it is a completely different way of working!! I find I should be using a cart with wheels to move my palette and stuff around as I usually work all over the painting at the same time as opposed to finishing sections at a time. Getting a good workout but a little nervous as I have never painted this big. 60x48! Hope it turns out the way my mind sees it! Wish me luck and are there any useful tricks for painting big you are willing to share?

Pinté "Jugo de Limón" en Agosto del año pasado bajo la dirección de Barbara Callow en un curso que tomé. Obviamenteme me había olvidado de escribir sobre este cuadro acá en el blog! 

Estos limoncitos Meyer, muy chiquitos, estaban en la ventana de mi cocina. Los pinté mucho mas grandes de lo que son en realidad de una foto que había sacado. Me gustó cómo quedaron y aprendí mucho de Barbara, una artista con mucho talento que tienen que visitar. 

Estoy super retrasada con los posts en el blog, tengo muchos cuadros que he pintado que no he logrado ponerlos acá. A dónde se van las horas del día a veces??

Estoy en este momento pintando un cuadro grande y es una forma totalmente de trabajar!! Me hace falta una mesita con ruedas para poder mover la paleta y el resto de las cosas ya que trabajo generalmente en todo el cuadro al mismo tiempo, no los termino por secciones sino que voy y vengo en las distiantas partes del cuadro. Estoy haciendo ejercicio al mismo tiempo!  (Y estoy un poco nerviosa ya que nunca he trabajado tan grande. 1.21x1.52m!)  Espero que me salga como lo tengo en la cabeza! Deseenme suerte y pasen consejos, si los tienen,  para trabajar grande??

And last but not least here is my favoruite of the trip to Washington. It was the second painting of the day and the school bus parked in this farm had called my attention earlier so I had to paint it! I found this view which I really liked; I specially liked the geometrical lines formed by the barns and buildings plus the bus of course :)

It was a great trip and we are planning to do it again, next time maybe on the Canadian side?? Who wants to come along??

Y finalmente pero no menos importante aca está mi favorito del viaje a Washington. Fue el segundo cuadro del día y el ómnibus escolar estacionado en esta granja me había llamado la atención mas temprano. Encontré este punto de vista que me gustó mucho ya que mostraba formas geometricas interesantes formadas por los edificios y graneros mas el ómnibus escolar por supuesto. :)

Fue un gran viaje que vamos a repetir el año que viene, tal vez del lado canadiense?? Quién quiere venir??

Barns #81 of 100

And there you thought we only painted red tulips! The truth is there was another painting of red and yellow fields which I am not too happy with so I haven't posted that one. There is only one more tulip festival painting left to show you after this one. We can then one move to other fun stuff!

This little one was the 3rd painting of the second day. In La Conner there is a myriad of barns and farm houses which are extremely interesting to paint. (This location would be a nice painting destination any time of the year because of this).  Many crooked barns and building, some almost falling down, with so much character! I hadn't done one with a typical barn this trip so I decided to pick this view in the distance. It was very windy and I was very pleased with my set up as it held just fine. I am using an Alla Prima Pochade box and I love it. The one I have is the  Yellowstone which is about 11x14. I can carry the wet panels in the lid and it is a breeze to set up. I also carry a backpack where I take some extra panels, paper towel, mineral spirits,  brushes and other paraphernalia but I must say I am learning  to take less and less all the time. (And of course my mug of coffee for the morning!)

Y acá ustedes pensaban que sólo pinté tulipanes rojos! La verdad es que  tengo otro con campos amarillos y rojos pero no me gusta mucho el resultado así que no lo he mostrado. Hay otro más de este viaje además de este y después podemos ver lo que he estado haciendo después y antes del viaje!

Esta fue la 3ra pintura del segundo día. En  La Conner hay una gran variedad de graneros y casas de campo que son muy interesantes para pintar. (Es por eso que en realidad es un lugar hermoso para pintar en cualquier época del año). Hay muchos edificios viejos todos torcidos que tienen muchísima personalidad, algunos parecen que ya se caen.  No había incluido un típico granero así que elegí esta vista a la distancia. Tuvimos bastante viento esa tarde y estuve muy contenta con mi equipo ya que aguantó el viento sin problemas. Tengo una caja Alla Prima Pochade, la Yellowstone es la mía, de alrededor 28x36.  Puedo transportar los paneles en la tapa y es muy fácil de armar. También llevo una mochila donde tengo paneles extra, toallas de papel, pinceles y otro montón de cosas. Pero debo admitir que estoy aprendiendo  a llevar cada vez menos cosas. Por supuesto también está el taza con café para la mañana!

This was the second day in La Conner, were lucky it didn't rain on us. These fields were incredible and I worked at getting the perspective right. I am happy with the way it ended up looking.
