Ahhhh...... What a struggle today! I knew it would be a switch, to go back to oils but I bit more than I could chew today and this is as far as I go on this one tonight (I may touch up the pear and the orange on the left, I think they need some brighter/lighter values on them, now that I see it posted) I decided to set up a still life because, as I said yesterday, I feel that is where I mostly need to work. I also believe that is where I am going to learn the most. I had an idea which I liked but then the composition I wanted wasn't fitting on the format I had. Ok, changed the composition to make it work better and I am still not convinced it does.... I ended up painting the whole day with a LOT of interruptions as there were some errands and work to get done, kids needed picking up from school and driven around to different activities and then on top of that they wanted dinner!!!... the nerve of them!!   (My husband works out of town and this week he is not home to help out with those domestic delights!)  Then, when I paint in oils  I always start very tidily, with everything organized and in its place, gloves on and all that..... By the end of the painting gloves are nowhere to be found, there are painting tubes all over the place, I have about 20 brushes dirty and paint ALL Over myself! Tonight, I even had a red nose by the time I looked at myself in the mirror while cleaning up! Ok, enough whining, onto the next one tomorrow!! (Lysanne, I should have stayed with a landscape!! much easier!!)

Ahhhh..... Que lucha hoy! Sabía que iba a ser un cambio volver a los óleos  pero hoy mordí más de lo podía masticar y hasta acá llego con esta. (Tal vez retoque la pera y la naranja de la izquierda, me parece que necesitan valores más claros, ahora que la veo acá en el blog) Decidí armar una naturaleza muerta porque, como dije ayer, creo que es eso en lo más práctica necesito. Pienso también que es así como más voy a aprender. Tenía una idea en mente pero la composición no funcionaba con el formato que tenía. Ok, cambié la composición un poco para que funcionara aunque no estoy todavía convencida que si funciona. Terminé pintando todo el día ya que tuve MUCHAS interrupciones: hubo algunos trámites y trabajo que hacer, tuve que buscar a los chicos de la escuela y llevarlos a otras actividades y después encima de todo eso querían cenar!!! Las ideas de estos chicos!! (My esposo trabaja en otra ciudad y esta semana no está en casa para ayudar con esas delicias domésticas!) Otra cosa, cuando pinto con óleos siempre empiezo con todo muy ordenado, todo organizado, en su lugar, con los guantes puestos y todo eso.... Cuando termino, tengo pomos de pintura por todos lados, tengo aproximadamente 20 pinceles sucios y  pintura por TODOS lados! Los guantes hace rato que terminaron en la mesa y esta noche hasta tenía la nariz roja cuando me miré en el espejo cuando me limpiaba! Bueno, basta de quejas, seguimos con la próxima mañana! (Lysanne, debería haber echo un paisaje, muchísimo más fácil!) 

#3 of 30: Christmas Cactus III

Well here is offering number 3 and I do promise I will get caught up!  As I said yesterday I still had one cactus left in me.  All of the purples and pinks were what attracted me to them as well as the arches in the 2 previous ones and the vertical patterns that were created by the branches in this one one in particular. I also liked the Maidenhair Fern that grew out of the hole in the bottom of the pot! I have always loved that kind of fern (which I cannot grow very well here in Canada since it is an indoor plant here and the rooms are very dry for them)
I am not loving what I am creating this time so tomorrow I am going to dive back into the world of oils and I am very excited about that! Haven't decided yet if I am going to continue painting random things I choose daily or if I am going to box myself into something..... we will see :) I'd better go tidy up those oil paints and be ready for tomorrow!

Bueno, aquí está mi ofrecimiento número 3 y prometo que me voy a poner al día! Como dije ayer todavía me quedaba un cactus adentro! Los colores morados y rosados fue lo que mas me atrajo de estas plantas y la razón por las que las pinté además de los arcos que las ramas formaban en las dos anteriores y las líneas verticales que se crearon en esta. También me gustó el culandrillo que creció del hueco de abajo de la maceta. Siempre me ha encantado el culandrillo (y no lo puedo hacer crecer bien acá en Canadá ya que es planta de adentro y los ambientes son demasiado secos)
No estoy para nada contenta con lo que he estado creando así que mañana vuelvo al mundo de los óleos y estoy entusiasmada con eso! No he decidido todavía si voy a continuar pintando  cosas que elijo a diario de acuerdo a lo que tenga ganas de pintar ese día o si me voy a exigir un poco mas de estructura.... Veremos :)  Me voy a ordenar los óleos!! 

#2 of 30: Christmas Cactus II

Well, after what seemed like a life time of waiting in different lines and different airports we made it back to Canada where there is frost on the ground, fires going and loads and loads of things to put away!  I felt VERY disorganized to get started this morning with suitcases surrounding me, jet lag, laundry and a somewhat messy studio. I was also thinking hard on what to paint as I have lots of ideas and things I want to paint but I had wanted to limit the challenge to only some things. For example, I had thought I would only work from life as it is infinetely easier for me to paint from photographs than it is to paint from real life and this challenge is personally all about working on areas that are challenging/difficult for me. But I caved in and printed a photograph as I wanted to give the cactus another chance. I had rushed it on the first day and here it is. A different shot, a different plant actually as my parents have a few pots with them hanging on that window and I am somewhat pleased with it. Of course as soon as I post it here I see all the things that I need to change in it and I may still do that! 

I actually worked on a second one at the same time, yes, another cactus which is working and half way there. Hopefully will be able to finish that one tomorrow and do a second one to be able to get caught up!

Bueno, despues de esperar lo que pareció toda una vida en colas y distintos aeropuertos hemos regresado a Canada donde hay escarcha en el suelo, fuegos en los hogares y pilas y pilas de cosas por guardar! Me sentí por supuesto MUY desorganizada esta mañana rodeada de valijas, jet lag, ropa sucia y un taller un poco desordenado. También estaba deliberando qué pintar ya que tengo muchas ideas y cosas por pintar pero quería inicialmente limitar este desafío a ciertas cosas. Por ejemplo, había pensado que tal vez iba a pintar cosas que reales y no de fotos ya que es muchísimo más fácil patra mí pintar de fotos y en este desafío quiero concentrarme en cosas que me resultan mas dificiles o me dan trabajo. Pero finalmente me rendí hoy, imprimí una foto ya que me había quedado con ganas de pintar ese cactus de nuevo. Es una foto diferente, otra toma y es en realidad otra planta ya que mis padres tienen varias macetas colgadas en una ventana. Estoy mediamente conforme con como salió. Por supuesto, apenas la pongo acá en el blog veo todas las cosas que tengo que cambiar (y tal vez lo haga!)

Hoy trabajé en dos piezas al mismo tiempo, si, otro cactus que va bien y va por la mitad. Mañana voy a terminar ese and ojalá poder terminar una segunda para poder ponerme al día!

Day 1 of 30: Christmas Cactus (#42)

I have been in Argentina for the last 20 days and I had the best of intentions to paint but as I said before it has been way too hot (around 35 to 44 degrees Celcius). Today, however, temperatures have cooled down a bit and being the first day of the year I got up and painted this cactus my mom and dad have in a pot hanging form the wall in a patio. It is also the first painting of the 30 day challenge. I am under pressure as I will loose a couple of days in transit on our way back to Canada so wanted to at least have one under my belt. It is not a wow but it is a start!!! Have to pack tomorrow so I am not sure I'll be able to do number 2.... Actually I should have been packing this morning :) Happy New Year everyone! Off to the pool now, the way we spend New years day here in Argentina!!

Hace 20 días que estamos en Argentina y tenía las mejores intenciones de pintar pero como dije antes ha estado demasiado caluroso! (De 35 a 44 grados Celcius). Hoy, sin embargo, las temperaturas han bajado un poco y ya que es el primer día del año me levanté y pinté este cactus que mi mamá y papá tienen en una maceta colgada en un patio. Hoy es también el primer día del Desafío de 30 en 30. Estoy bajo presión ya que voy a perder un par de días en tránsito volviendo a Canadá y quería tener una aunque sea en la manga. No está espectacular pero es un comienzo!!! Mañana es día de armar valijas así que no se si voy a poder hacer la número 2.... Tendría que haber estado armando valijas hoy en realidad. :) Feliz Año Nuevo para Todos! Me voy a la pileta ahora, es así como pasamos el primer día del año en Argentina!!

  It has been quiet on the painting front around here. I had the best of intentions to paint while visiting my home land of Argentina but it has been just way too hot!! 35 to 44 degrees (Celsius). Can't do too much in that kind of heat. I am anyway gathering up energy for the coming up challenge in January: I will again paint 30 paintings in 30 days, I will miss a few days due to the return flight back home to Canada but I will make them up in the coming up weeks. Las cosas han estado bastante tranquilas por acá con respecto a la pintura. Vine con las mejores intenciones de pintar durante mi visita a mi país natal, Argentina pero ha estado haciendo demasiado calor!! De 35 a 44 grados! No se puede hacer mucho con ese calor!! Estoy de todas formas acumulando energías para el desafío que se viene en Enero: De nuevo voy a pintar 30 cuadros en 30 días, voy a perder un par de días debido al viaje de regreso a Canadá pero los voy a recuperar durante el mes. #41: Daisy

This was a great exercise last July. I usually paint in the morning and early afternoon, leaving evenings for family and driving kids around,  but that day I didn't have enough time during the day and I had enough juice in me to start this one after dinner. The evening was beautiful and I set up outside on the patio but the light was quickly changing, actually more than changing it was going!! I had about 50 minutes before I had to stop, moved inside and inspected in proper light what I had done. It was not bad! I worked some details that I couldn't see outside and it was done! An exercise on setting a time limit and just going for it!

Este fue un gran ejercicio que hice este Julio pasado. Normalmente pinto a la mañana o temprano en la tarde, dejo las nochecitas para la familia y llevar a los chicos de acá para allá. Pero ese día no había tenido suficiente tiempo durante el día y me quedaban ganas para pintar algo. Era una nochecita hermosa y armé todo afuera en el patio para pintar pero la luz estaba cambiando muy rápidamente, más que cambiar, la luz iba desapareciendo! Tuve aproximadamente 50 minutos antes de tener que parar porque ya no veía nada. Volví al taller a inspeccionar lo que había echo y no estaba tan mal! Corregí algunos detalles que no podía ver afuera y estuvo lista! Un ejercicio en poner un tiempo de límite y pintar!!

Some of you may know that last September I participated in an online challenge called "30 Paintings in 30 Days". Last year I discovered the world of blogs at some point and started following some artists whose work I liked or found inspiring. I had come across Leslie Saeta's blog and watched with envy artists taking part in a challenge in January. Oh, how I wished I could do it! But of course, in my mind there was no way I would be able to do it for so many reasons, time being number one. But the stars and planets aligned and last September when I saw it was coming up again, I talked my friend Sharlene Stushnov Lee into doing it with me, took the plunge and I signed up for it (scared to death of not being able to follow through)!!  As a side note I should add that my painting had taken the back seat when I got very involved in getting an Art Centre off the ground 5 years before (Visit Coast Collective to see what ended  up looking like, very proud of what we accomplished!!)

This challenge was the best thing I did for myself and my art. It got me excited and working! Painting on a daily basis allowed me to learn every single day about myself, my artwork and the processes I was using. It built confidence and I am very excited about doing it again. I will miss the first couple of days of it as I will be in transit getting back to Canada from our trip to Argentina but it will be fine! I will double up on some other days and I will do another 30 in 30 this coming up January. I know there are more local people that talked about doing it with us and that will be lots of fun! Can't wait to be in the thick  of it again!

Algunos de uds. saben que este Septiembre pasado paticipé en un desafío online que se llamaba "30 pinturas en 30 días". El año pasado descubrí el mundo  de los blogs en algún momento y empecé a seguir a varios artistas que me gustaba su trabajo o eran fuente de inspiración. Encontré así el blog de Leslie Saeta y miré con envidia como artistas participaban en un desafío durante el mes de Enero. Oh, como deseaba estar haciéndolo también! Pero por supuesto en mi mente yo no podía hacerlo, especialmente debido a la falta de tiempo. Pero todos los planetas y las estrellas se alinearon y este septiembre pasado ví que se venía otro desafío, la convencí a mi amiga Sharlene Stushnov Lee a que lo hiciera conmigo, me animé y me anoté para hacerlo (muerta de miedo de no poder terminar) Deberia agregar que mi pintura había pasado a segundo plano 5 años anteriores cuando fui parte del comienzo de un Centro de Arte (Visite Coast Collective para ver en qué resultó eso, lago de lo que etsoy muy orgullosa).

Este desafío fue lo mejor que hice para mi y mi arte. Me entusiasmó y me puso en acción. Al pintar  de forma diaria, aprendí todos los días sobre mí misma, mi trabajo y los procesos que seguía. Me ayudó a  tener confianza y estoy entusiasmada con hacerlo de nuevo.  Voy a perder los primeros días porque voy a estar en tránsito volviendo de Argentina a Canadá pero me las voy a arreglar. Voy a tener que hacer 2 en algunos otros días para poder completar 30 pinturas en 30 días de nuevo. Se que hay más amigos y gente local que  van a participar esta vez y nos vamos a divertir. Estoy ansiosa por comenzar y estar en el medio del baile!

On the Easel

The weather outside is frightful..... Which is why I am posting one of the pieces on my easel. It is close to being finished but but not quite! I like the way this one happened, sort of working away, putting layers and at one point I stepped back and it was there. 

We had a dusting of snow the last couple of days and the temperatures have dropped to -5 last night (-15 with the wind chill) which is nothing compared to other parts of Canada. This painting is from Fort McMurray in Northern Alberta which is here my husbands works. I visited last year and this is a pic from a walk behind the subdivision where his house is. By the way the temperature there yesterday was -42!!! BRRRR!!! Next week we will be in Argentina where the temps will be +40!!!!

El tiempo aftuera esta espantoso!!.... Y es por eso que hoy les muestro este cuadro que está sin terminar. Le falta poco, pero no está todavía listo. Me gusta como esta quedando y el proceso: pongo capas de pintura, siguiendo los pasos normales de todos los cuadros y en un momento paro, lo miro y ahí esta!
Tuvimos un poquito de nieve en estos últimos días y la temperatura ha bajado anoche a -5. (-15 de sensación térmica con el viento) que no es nada comparado con otros lugares de Canadá. Este cuadro es de Fort McMurray, una ciudad en el Norte de la Provincia de Alberta que es donde mi esposo trabaja. Visité el año pasado y esta es una foto que saqué en una caminata por atrás del barrio donde está su casa. La temperatura allá ayer era de -42!!! BRRR!!!! La semana que viene vamos a estar en Argentina donde va a hacer +40!!!!!

#40: Daisies

I painted these daisies back in July too. Have lots of them around the garden and did a couple of paintings this past summer. It was a great study in painting "white" (which is never white). I liked the shadows that were created,  I remember they caught my attention right away. I was also interested in starting to paint glass. Happy with the result!

Life has gotten really too busy these weeks to paint which I why I am posting pieces I had painted earlier and never posted. We are going home to Argentina for the holiday season, leaving in 9 days so I am very focused on crossing things off my lists. (I love lists). Work is winding down, by the end of December we will have successfully transferred the reins over to a Non profit to manage Coast Collective, the beautiful Art Centre that together with a 4 more artists I helped create in the last past 5 years. With leaving so soon though it means that Xmas shopping, cards and work details have to be done by then. Getting close! I am very excited about the next chapter in my life which will have a LOT more painitng in it!

Pinté estas margaritas este Julio pasado. Tengo muchas de ellas en el jardín y pinté un par de cuadros este verano. Fue un muy buen estudio de como pintar "blanco" (que nunca es blanco). Recuerdo que me habían atraído mucho las sombras que se habían formado. También estaba interesada en empezar a pintar vidrio. Estoy contenta con el resultado!

He estado muy ocupada estas semanas pasadas, y es por ello que estoy mostrando cosas aur había pintado hace tiempo y no las había puesto en el blog. Nos vamos a Argentina para la Navidad, salimos en 9 días y mi meta diaria es tachar cosas en mi lista (me gustan mucho las listas). El trabajo también esta terminando. Para fines de Diciembre vamos a haber pasado las riendas a una Sociedad sin Fines de Lucro que va a manejar Coast Collective, el hermoso Centro de Arte que junto con 4 artistas ayudé a crear en estos últimos 5 días. Al viajar tan pronto tengo que tener todo organizado: regalos de Navidad, tarjetas y todos los detalles del trabajo tienen que estar terminados. Falta poco!

Estoy muy entusiasmada con el próximo capítulo en mi vida que va a tener MUCHA más pintura!

#39: Nanny's White Rose

My husband's grandmother used to have this beautiful rose bush in her yard. I always loved it, it produced the biggest a clumps of flowers which lasted a very long time. Unfortunately I don't have any idea what the name for the rose is. Last December Nanny passed away (lived to 100, grew a vegetable garden until the last summer and lived on her own!). One of the things I inherited was that rose bush. She had told me several times:  Marcela, you take that bush with you! And I did! I moved it very late in the season and I was afraid it would make it. It survived and despite the lack of pruning and the move, it gave me the most beautiful flowers this summer! I love gardening, that rose bush and every time I look at it, I remember Nanny. I painted this one last July.

La abuela de mi esposo tenía un rosal hermosisimo en su jardín. Siempre me gustó, producía estos ramilletes enormes que duraban mucho tiempo. Lamentablemente  no tengo idea del nombre de este rosal. Este Diciembre pasado Nanny falleció (vivió hasta los 100 años, tuvo huerta hasta su último verano y vivía sola!!) y  una de las cosas que heredé fue este rosal. Ella me había dicho varias veces: Marcela, llévate ese rosal! Y así lo hice. Lo transplanté bastante tarde en la temporada y tenía temor de que no viviera. Tomó y sobrevivió la falta de poda y la movida, me dió las flores más hermosas este verano! Me encantan las plantas y  la jardinería. Cada vez que veo ese rosal, me acuerdo de Nanny. Pinté este cuadrito este Julio pasado.

On The easel

This is what I have been working on the last few of times I have painted. It was half  way there on the first picture (which is where I started today)  Picture 2 still not finished, have to go back in the there and keep layering. There is still work to do but I am happy with the direction this is going into.  I am enjoying the process very much though. I am using acrylics and painting larger than I have been lately.  This one is 20x24.

Somebody asked me the other day what I listen to while painting and sometimes I listen to music, (most times actually) but lately I have started listening to different talks, podcasts and online radio talk shows. Today and the previous time I have listened to AHA (Artists Helping Artists). It is a show that Leslie Saeta puts on once a week on Thursday mornings and they are all online to listen to at any time. They talk about many different aspects of being an artist. It is very interesting, informative and inspiring.

Esto es lo que he estado haciendo las ultimas veces que he pintado. En la primera foto estoy a mitad de camino. En la segunda foto es hasta donde llegue hoy, no he terminado todavía, tengo seguir poniendo capas. Todavía le falta pero estoy satisfecha con la dirección en la que va. Estoy disfrutando del proceso muchísimo. Estoy usando acrílicos y  pintando más grande de lo que he pintado en mucho tiempo. Tiene 50 x 60 cm.

Alguien me pregunto el otro día qué escucho cuando pinto. A veces escucho música (la mayor parte del tiempo) pero últimamente he empezado a escuchar charlas, presentaciones o radio por internet. Hoy y la vez anterior escuche un programa en particular que se llama AHA. (Artistas que ayudan a Artistas). Es un show que Leslie Saeta hace una vez por semana los jueves a la mañana (pero están todos online y se pueden escuchar en cualquier momento. Es interesante, informativo y muchas veces fuente de inspiración. 

#38: Tofino Sunset

Very rarely do I paint from other people' photographs. I did in this case back in July (of course with special permission from my good friend who took the picture) Thanks Lori! Tofino is a small town on the West coast of Vancouver Island. Very quaint, a surfer's paradise and apparently the best place to see some winter storms. Have to make plans to go visit this year to paint and get loads of reference material!

Muy rara vez pinto usando fotos de otra gente, fotos que no he tomado yo. Pero lo hice en este caso este julio pasado. (Con permiso especial por supuesto de mi Amiga que tomó la foto) Gracias Lori! Tofino es un pueblito chiquito en la costa oeste de la Isla de Vancouver. Muy pintoresco, un paraíso para los surfistas y el mejor lugar para ver una buena tormenta de invierno. Tengo que hacer planes para ir a visitar este año, pintar y sacar pilas de fotos para pintar!

#37: Pear

I painted this pear back in July right after I painted the tomatoes  below which I have already posted earlier.  I was trying the same set up, same lighting with different subject. 

I really enjoyed doing that as I felt I progressed from one into the next one kind of knowing what I was doing, learning from one painting into the next one. :) I think I may  do some along this idea, I like them .

At present I am working on a couple of larger acrylics that are on the right track, they are working out, but they are not ready for showing just quite yet. I hope to be able to write on the blog more often from now on and get back to a routine!

Pinté esta pera en Julio después de pintar los tomates que puse abajo que ya les había mostrado. Estaba probando de pintar con el mismo arreglo, la misma luz, distinto sujeto. Disfruté mucho de hacer esto ya que sentí que había progreso de una pintura a la otra, y empezaba la próxima medio como ya sabiendo lo que hacía. :) Creo que voy a tener que hacer mas siguiendo esta idea. Me gustan .

Estoy en este momento trabajando en un par de acrílicos más grandes que van bien, están bien encaminados pero no están listos para mostrar todavía. Espero poder escribir en el blog más seguido de acá en adelante y volver a una rutina!

I painted this poppy back at the beginning of the summer and it is a prime example of one of those paintings that I get to like more as time goes by. When I first finished it, I didn't quite like it but let it be. Now I have come to really like it! 

I don't usually take too many process photos but in this case I did and here they are backwards.

Pinté esta amapola al cominezo del verano y es un perfecto ejemplo de uno de esos cuadros que me empieza a gustar mas una vez que pasa el tiempo. Cuando recién lo terminé no estaba muy satisfecha pero lo dejé. Y ahora me gusta mucho!
Normalmente no saco muchas fotos del proceso que uso para pintar. En este caso saqué algunas fotos  y acá están.

I had one of these poppies in the yard and I was afraid of cutting it as I didn't know how long they lasted off the plant, it held up pretty nicely actually, even under the light! 

Tenía una de esta amapolas en el jardín y tenía miedo de cortarla porque no sabía cuánto tiemp iba a durar una vez cortada, pero se mantuvo muy bien, aún debajo de la lámpara!

Here I drew in with the brush the main shapes after a first initial wash to tone the canvas.

Acá simplemente dibujé con el pincel las formas principales despues de una capa liviana  para tonalizar el lienzo

I started applying colour in the main shapes.

Empecé a aplicar color en las formas principales

I started playing a bit more, pushing, pulling and changing  shapes and values until I was happier. I still made more changes after this one to get to the finished one.

Empecé a jugar un poco mas, poniendo, sacando y cambiando formas y valores hasta que estuve un poco mas satisfecha. Hice mas cambios despues de estos hasta llegar a la final.

#35: Early Spring

I started this painting back in April and it was my first plein-air sketch in oils. I honestly didn't quite know what I was doing with oils. However I kind of liked the fresh feel it had. It had started raining so I hadn't had a chance to finish it quite back then that day. My oils were quickly turning into watercolours!! So in my quest to finish half done pieces and my lack of time at the present moment I grabbed this one yesterday. I am not sure yet if I am happy with it but  I like it for what it is: a plein-air sketch. But I am not sure I did a great job when you start considering all the things to think about for a successful painting. Overall, it depicts the trees we have ALL around us here. Small lakes and trees. This was at the Boys & Girls Club in Sooke (A summer camp place for kids)

Empecé esta pintura en la primavera en Abril y fue el primer estudio en plein-air (al aire libre) con óleos. Honestamente no sabía muy bien qué  hacer con los óleos. Sin embargo, me gusta el espíritu libre y poco trabajado que tiene este sketch. Había empezado a llover, los óleos se estabn convirtiendo en acuarelas y no lo había terminado ese día. A sí que ahora mi misión de terminar piezas a medias y mi falta de tiempo en este momento me llevó a agarrar este estudio hoy. No estoy muy convencida todavía si me gusta o no pero estoy contenta con el resultado si consideramos lo que es: un sketch en plein-air. No estoy segura si he echo un buen trabajo cuando pensamos en todos los elementos necesarios para tener una pintura lograda. En general, muestra lo que tengo alrededor por TODOS lados en esta zona. Laguitos y árboles. Ese día habíamos estaba en el Club de Los Chiocs y Chicas en Sooke. (Una especie de campamento para niños en el verano).

#34: Entrance Island

I finished this one yesterday. I had started it last year when a group of us went on a painting trip to Gabriola Island. Worked on it a couple of times since then but never really finishing it. I am so glad it is now!! On that trip we spent 3 days there just painting and enjoying lots of art talk and company. Entrance Island is a name I had heard for years through the VHF on the boat. It is one of the marine stations that relays weather informacion. It  was also the firts sighting I had of land on a particularly bouncy and foggy crossing of the straight a few years ago coming back from Desolation Sound. (I am a fair weather sailor!) So it was a place that I enjoyed painting when I actually saw it more up close.

We need to organize another one of those plein air trips soon!!

Terminé esta ayer. La había empezado el año pasado cuando fui con un grupo de gente a la Isla Gabriola a pintar. Otro par de veces volví a agarrala pero no había logrado terminarla y estoy contenta de que ahora sí esté!! En ese viaje, durante 3 días, pintamos, hablamos de arte y disfrutamos mucho. La Isla de Entrada es un nombre que durante años había escuchado por la radio VHF en el velero ya que hay una estación metereologica que da anuncios del tiempo. También fue la primera vista de tierra que tuve después de una cruzada particularmente neblinosa y de mar picado hace unos años cuando volvíamos de un viaje. (Yo soy Marinera de buen tiempo, como se dice en inglés!)  Así que fue un lugar que disfrute mucho pintar desde tan cerca esta vez. 

Tenemos que organizar pronto otro viaje como este para  pintar!!

#33: Going North

I painted this one the week before the challenge started on our sailing trip back in August. I believe we were going with the wind and things were quite level so I set up everyrhing and had some fun!
This is the kind of thing you see alot of here in the Pacific North West and the Gulf Islands. I never get tired of enjoying this scenery!

This was the set up on the boat, was trying  my new paint box for the first time (which I love!) I will going into more detail about  the box in a different post. Covered the table with a plastic tablecloth from the dollar store (I get paint everywhere, most of it is on me and the canvas, but just in case, protecting the surfaces was mandatory on the boat!)

Pinté esta la semana anterior a empezar el desafío en nuestra vacación en el velero a fines de Agosto. Creo que ibamos en la misma direccion del viento y las cosas estaban bastante niveladas asi que armé todo y me divertí un rato! Esto es lo que se ve mucho acá en el Noroeste Pacífico y las Islas del Golfo. No me canso nunca de disfrutar de estos paisajes!
La segunda foto es de el área de trabajo en el velero, estaba usando mi caja de pinturas nueva (que me encanta!) voy a entrar más en detalles con respecto a esta caja más adelante. Cubrí la mesa con un mantel de plástico que compré en el todo por 1 peso (Termino con pintura en todos lados, sobre todo sobré mi y el lienzo pero por las dudas, el proteger las superficies es mandatorio en el velero!)

This is an oldie but appropriate for this time of the year here, it seems this week all the trees are turning and the colors are just gorgeous everywhere you go.  We spent the last couple of days up in Lake Cowichan at a friend's house. It is on the lake and the view out was just so peaceful. They opened up their home and shared Thanksgiving dinner with us. (Turkey was delicious!) It is always very special to be able to spend time with good friends you don't often see.  Today we went for a walk close to their house and I took a LOT of photos. Hopefully some of them transform into paintings soon!

I have a lot to be thankful for. Hopefully  even if you are not in Canada celebrating Thanksgiving today, this serves as a chance for you to make a list of things you are thankful for! Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!

Esta pintura es vieja, la pinté hace varios años pero es apropiada para esta altura del año. Parece que esta semana todos los árboles estan cambiando de color y por todos lados los colores son hermosísimos. Pasamos la noche en el Lago Cowichan en la casa de unos amigos. La casa está sobre el lago y la vista era hermosa y muy serena. Nos abrieron las puertas y compartieron su cena de Acción de Gracias con nosotros (El pavo estuvo riquísimo!). Es siempre especial compatir tiempo con buenos amigos! Hoy fuimos a caminar a un parque cerquita de su casa y saqué MUCHAS fotos  y  espero que algunas se tranformen en pinturas pronto.

Tengo muchas cosas por las cuales estar agradecida. Espero que aunque no estén Canada celebrando Acción de Gracias tomen esta oportunidad para hacer una lista de las cosas que tiene para agradecer! Feliz Acción de Gracias para Todos!

#32: Tomatoes

Busy, busy in the studio today, finishing edges, varnishing and wiring paintings from the 30 in 30 challenge, getting them ready to show. I'll be taking some of them to Coast Collective next week (so if you were truly interested in any of them, send me a message and let me know, before they hit the street!) Some of you have asked what I was going to do with them, if they were for sale and yes, most of the paintings in this blog are for sale! I will slowly go back on each day and add the prices.  I have to get more canvas you know and foster the addiction, right? :)

Anyway, this tomatoes painting was done back in June and I learnt so much while painting it! I was trying the lighting from above and worked hard at getting the transparency tomatoes have sometimes. I learnt a tremendous amount that day on how oils behave and the magic of a light touch sometimes. I am pretty happy with the way this one turned out.

Mucho trabajo  en el taller hoy! Pintado los bordes de los lienzos, barnizando y preparando las pinturas para mostrar. Esta semana que viene voy a llevar algunas a Coast Collective para mostrarlas. (Así que si alguien estaba realmente interesado en alguna, mándenme un mensaje antes de que estas piezas salgan a la calle!!). Varias personas me han preguntado que que iba a hacer con todos estos cuadros, si los iba a vender y la respuesta es si, la mayoría de los cuadros en el blog estan a la venta, voy a entrar de a poco y agregar los precios de cada una. Uno tiene que poder comprar más lienzos a alimentar la adicción no? :)

Pinté estos tomates en Junio y aprendí mucho ese día! Estaba iluminando los de arriba y trabajé bastante para conseguir esa transparencia que los tomates tienen a veces. Aprendí en el proceso como se comportan los óleos y la magia de una pincelada suave y liviana. Estoy bastante contenta con como me quedó esta pieza.

I think that the goals have been set. I want to get to the 100 paintings I was talking about  and this is coming from one of a letter Robert Genn wrote a long time ago. I actually just went digging in the Painter's Keys website and found it! It was in 2004!! In it, someone starting to paint wants to get some criticism from him about her painting and  his response was "Go do another 100 and come back". I am sure I have painted more than 100 paintings in my life time but I want to do them within a certain period of time as  that when I believe you can actually develop your  work and there can be progress. (Click here to see that clickback on The Painter's Key website) I haven't quite set the time frame yet though. I would like to get it done before the end of the year but I need to be realistic as to everything else happening in my life at the moment, including a trip to Argentina in December to spend Xmas down there.  I am starting to count since June 2013 which is when I actually started painting again and I am up to 45 finished (or almost finished) pieces :) I'll start posting the ones you haven's seen yet as they were painted  before the challenge. The deadline maybe the end of January and that would be very "doable" as there is another challenge coming in Jan! I have a couple more goals that I will be sharing with you in the next few posts (which will actually happen not everyday but just a few times a week)

So here we go with number 31. I painted this the week after Liz Wiltzen's workshop and just starting with oils.

Creo que he dedicidio cuales son mis metas próximas. Quiero llegar al número 100 del que hablaba hace unos días y esta idea viene de una de las cartas  semanales que Robert Genn escribió hace mucho tiempo. Acabo de ir a su website y la encontré! Fue en el 2004!! En esta carta, una persona que está empazando a pintar quiere  que él le critique lo que había pintado y el respondió: "Andá a hacer otras 100 y volvé" Yo estoy segura que  he pintado mas de 100 piezas en mi vida pero quiero hacerlo dentro de una cantidad determinada de tiempo porque creo que asi es como uno puede desarrollar un estilo y se puede ver progreso. Sigan este link para ver esa carta en el sitio de Robert Genn que se llama La Clave del Pintor (o algo asi) No he determinado todavía cuál va a ser el límite de tiempo que me voy a poner. Me gustaría terminarlo antes de fin de año pero se que tengo que ser realista con todo el resto de cosas en mi vida, incluyendo una viaje a Argentina para Navidad. Voy a empezar a contar desde Junio de este año que es cuando empecé a pintar de nuevo y ya tengo 45 piezas terminadas (o casi terminadas) :) Voy a empezar a poner acá en el blog los que no han visto que pinté ante de comenzar el desafío. El límite sea tal vez a fines de Enero y eso sería bastante posible ya que hay otro desafío en Enero! Hay otro par de metas que voy a comparit con uds en los proximos dias. (No voy a poner cosas en el blog todos los días)

Acá vamos entonces con la número 31. La pinté la semana siguiente al curso con Liz Wiltzen y estaba empezando con óleos.
