I am very fortunate to live where I do. Victoria on Vancouver Island, BC is one of the most beautiful places I have seen. It is just so around  everywhere you look. This is the view from my work.  so this morning I had to be there earlier than usual, I set up the easel before starting to work and tried to catch the light out there. The mountain range in the back is actually the Olympic Mountains in the United States.

Yo tengo mucha suerte de vivir en donde vivo. Victoria, en la Isla de Vancouver, BC  es unos de los lugares más hermosos que conozco. Hay belleza por todos lados! Esta es la vista desde mi trabajo, esta mañana tuve que estar ahí más temprano que de costumbre así que saque las pinturas y traté de 

Pintar la luz que había. Las montañas que se ven atrás son las montañas Olímpicas en Estados Unidos. 

Day 19: Clamb Bay

The last week of August we went sailing for a week around the Gulf Islands. This was the view I had when I woke up in the morning and started painting it right there on the boat but couldn't finish it that day. Never got to get back to it since I started the 30 in 30  challenge and today I had very limited time so I decided to have a go at finishing this one instead of starting a new one.  I am not happy with the end result and can see some things wrong right off the bat. (My horizon line is dangerously close to the centre to begin with.  I may go back in and change some things.) But at least I have something to post for today! I didn't think I would have time for anything!

La última semana de Agosto fuimos a navegar durante una semana en la Islas del Golfo. Esta es la vista que tenía cuando me desperté y empecé este cuadró en el velero ese día. No he podido  terminarlo porque empecé con este desafío de los 30 en 30. Hoy tenía muy poco tiempo y decidí internar terminar este. No estoy muy contenta con el resultado ya que veo errores de entrada. (Mi línea del horizonte está peligrosamente cerca de la mitad, tal vez corrija algunas cosas) Pero por lo menos tengo algo para poner hoy! No creí que iba a tener tiempo para nada!

Day 18: Steep Island

So I was going to paint something different today but I'll save that for a studio day. Today in the end I decided to paint what was right outside our room here in  Quadra Island. I painted for about an hour and a couple of seals were splashing right there for the whole time. Went for a drive, visited Cape Mudge Lighthouse (one of the last manned light houses in Western Canada) and Rebecca Spit which is a GORGEOUS area. We went on a wildlife tour and saw about 20 to 30 orcas and about 200 dolphins swimming in a channel, lots of them coming right up to the zodiak,  swimming,  jumping and splashing alongside us. I can never get tired of enjoying the scenery around us here!

Hoy iba a pintar algo diferente pero decidí guardar esa idea para un día de taller y pinté lo que tengo afuera de nuestra habitación acá en la Isla Quadra. Pinté durante una hora mas o menos y un par de focas estaban saltando todo el tiempo. Fuimos a dar una vuelta en el auto, visitamos el faro en Cape Mudge, (Uno de los últimos faros que no es automatizado, es así como se dice??) y Rebecca Spit que es una zona HERMOSISIMA. Fuimos en un tour en el que vimos 20 o 30 orcas y alrededor de 200 delfines que nadaban, saltaban y salpicaban al lado nuestro. No me puedo cansar nunca de disfrutar la naturaleza que nos rodea acá!

Day 17: Lunch?

Now, this is the stuff I LOVE to paint! It is not quite finished but it is a good start, there are a few things that I  want to correct/add but it is going in a very good direction. 

So at the beginning of this challenge I announced I was doing this and a friend said right away: Number 17 is mine. I told him: Well, shouldn't you wait? See what I kind of stuff I start painting?.... He said that was what came to his mind. I was wondering at the time what to paint and then about a week ago it came to me. I took this shot in Saltspring Island, a few ago when we were on our sailing vacation. I had printed a dozen pictures or so from that trip that I want to paint and this is the one I picked for Day 17. This friend and I met many years ago, live in different cities and don't get to see each other very often. 

It is a good thing I painted it yesterday as we were in transit today.  We are at Quadra Island right now, tomorrow is our 19th wedding anniversary (Yes, holy cow! time flies! ).  I already know what I am painting tomorrow, I am excited to go explore the island, take lots of pictures  and maybe even set home paint box in some special spot while hubby and dog for a walk!

Esto es el tipo de cosas que me encanta pintar! No está terminada pero es un buen comienzo, hay algunas cosas que quiero corregir/agregar pero ya va en una buena dirección. 

Al principio de este desafío, anuncié lo que estaba por hacer y un amigo me dijo que la número 17 era de él. Le dije: no te parece que tenés que esperar? Ver que tipo de cosas pinto? Y me dijo que no, que cuando leyó lo que yo estaba por hacer el 17 fue lo que le vino a la mente. Desde entonces que me pregunto que  qué iba a pintar y la semana pasada decidí qué era. Había sacado esta foto en la Isla Saltspring cuando fuimos de vacaciones hace un par de semanas. Había ya imprimido una docena más o menos para pintar y esta es la que elegí para el Día 17. Este amigo y yo nos conocimos hace muchos años, vivimos en ciudades diferentes y no nos vemos mucho. 

Fue buena idea haberla pintado ayer ya que hoy estábamos en tránsito. Estamos ahora en la Isla Quadra. Mañana es mi aniversario de casada, 19 años, (si, que bárbaro cómo pasa el tiempo!) Ya se lo que voy a pintar mañana. Estoy entusiasmada con ir a explorar la isla mañana, sacar muchas fotos y hasta en una de esas armar la caja de pinturas y hacer un cuadrito mientras mi esposo y mi perra van a caminar!

Day 16: Nectarines

I started these nectarines yesterday and finished them this morning. Again, I was going for a 37 minutes and I think it ended up being about 47, so getting better!
I also started day 17 today as I am going out of town tomorrow for a couple of days. Don't worry,  I am taking my paint box and will be painting, I just wanted to get a head start as I had something in mind. Was hoping to have had it finished but didn't quite get there with packing and getting everything ready. Funny, the family still  wants to eat everyday, they don't realize I am busy painting???

Empecé estos duraznos pelones ayer y los terminé esta mañana. De nuevo hoy estaba tratando de hacer una en 37 minutos, creo que terminó siendo 47 minutos así que estoy mejorando!
También empecé hoy el día 17 porque mañana me voy de viaje por un par de días. No se preocupen,  llevo las pinturas y voy a seguir pintando pero quería empezar la de mañana ya que tenía algo en mente. Quería tenerla terminada pero al final no pude, me quede sin tiempo enter preparer valija y dear todo listo. Lo interesanste es que la familia quieter comer todos los dias, no se dan cuenta que estoy ocupada pintando????

Day15: Yesterday and Tomorrow

So yesterday I painted hydrangeas, today  hydrangeas and a nectarine, so maybe you can guess what I am painting tomorrow! I actually started this one yesterday, I had only half an hour and I blocked it in in those 30 minutes. The idea was to come in today and give it another little while inspired by Robert Genn's twice weekly letter form a couple of weeks ago ("The 37 Club") in which he says that a very good exercise is to do a painting in 37 minutes. I forces you to stay fresh, not overwork your piece and makes you look harder. Mine ended up being more like 57 minutes but that is ok. I liked having the time limit. It stopped me from over  correcting and overworking it.

Ayer pinté hortensias, hoy hortensias y durazno pelón, así que tal vez pueden adivinar que voy a pintar mañana! En realidad la empecé ayer, tenía solamente media hora y la idea era volver hoy y trabajar un ratito más solamente inspirada por la carta que Robert Genn escribió hace un par de semanas ("El Club de los 37") en la que dice que un ejercicio muy bueno es hacer pinturas en 37 minutos. Te obliga a no prestar demasiada atención a los detalles, lampintura es mas "fresca" y te hace observar más. La mía terminó siendo 57 minutos . Me gustó tener el límite de tiempo. Me paró antes de corregir demasiado y "trabajar" la pintura de más.

Day 14: Blue

I have some hydrangeas in the front yard and I haven't painted them for many years. I used to enjoy painting  them in watercolours. I love the blue purple tones they have.  I wanted to do a simple one, again, not much time today. I am not sure if it is finished or not.

Tengo una hortensia en el jardin de adelante y hace muchos años  que no las pinto. Solía pintarlas en acuarelas. Me encantan los tonos azulados y lila que tienen. Quise hacer algo simple ya que de nuevo no tuve mucho tiempo. No se sí esta terminada o no.

Day 13: Very Pink

I picked to paint this Echinacea flower because they are colours I don't normally use. This is the first year they bloom in my garden too and I  wanted to get them before they are finished for the year. (This summer has been great in my garden as I had a deer fence installed and it is the first year I see some plants and flowers go to full growth in the 10 years that we have lived in this house!!) I was also after something simple as this was second painting yesterday and I didn't have a lot of time. (I did paint another one today!)  I went back on it today and fixed the centre that had gotten out of shape.

Elegií pintar esta flor de Equinacea por que son colores que no uso normalmente. Es el primer año que florecen en mi jardín y quería llegar a pintarlas antes de que se acabaran  esta temporada. (Este año ha sido bárbaro en mi jardín porque hice instalar una cerca para que los ciervos no entraran y es el primer año que veo ciertas plantas y flores llegar a estado maduro en los 10 años que hemos estado en esta casa). También quería pintar algo simple ya que esta fue mi segunda pintura ayer y no me quedaba mucho tiempo. Hoy le retoqué el centro que había perdido la forma.

Day 12: Green House

I almost wiped this one  today. It was a struggle. I am not happy with it overall but I like the textures and some parts which is I kept it. There is so much paint here I think it will take a couple of years to dry! :) Nobody said we signed up for 30 "good" paintings in 30 days! It is all about the process right?

Casi borre esta hoy. No estoy satisfecha en general pero me gusta la textura y algunas partes por eso es que la dejé. Hay tanta pintura en este lienzo que va tardar 2 años en secarse! :) Nadie dijo que nos habíamos anotado para hacer 30 pinturas "buenas" en 30 días! Se trata del proceso no?

Day 11: My Nest Is Best

Today I decided to take a day off since I do have one up my sleeve (or 2:) and I had no energy left by the time I actually had time to paint!! Last week I think it was (it is all becoming quite blurry!)  I finished an unfinished piece which hasn't been posted yet. Finishing works for me is as important as doing one as I have a big pile of them and I need to either finish them or get rid of them! Maybe I can have a Fall Bonfire to cleanse all those pieces that will never amount to anything clinging on to me! I will go into the studio though and clean as last night as I was trying to finish things got pretty messed up and the studio got soooo much smaller!
These birdhouses were in a beautiful property in Sooke (about 30k from Victoria). In the Spring a few of us were going to paint en-plein air to a different spot every Thursday. This was from one of those outings! Hope you enjoy it!

Hoy decidí tomarme el día ya que tengo una guardada (o 2:) y no tenía ya energías cuando me quedó tiempo para pintar después de un día muy ocupado. La semana pasada creo que fue, (se está poniendo todo medio borroso!)  había terminado un cuadro  que lo les he mostrado todavía. Terminar algunos trabajos  es para mí tan importante como hacer una nueva todos los días. Tengo una pila grande que tengo que terminar o tirarlas. Tal vez haga una fogata que va a servir para limpiar un poco todos esos cuadors empezados que nunca van a llegar a nada y los sigo arrastrando!
Estas casitas de pájaros están en una propiedad en Sooke (que esta a 30km de Victoria). Esta primavera pasada un grupo íbamos todos los jueves a pintar "en-Plein Air" (afuera) a distintos lugares. Este cuadrito salió de uno de esos días! Espero que les guste.

Every morning I read a whole bunch of blogs from many different artists whose work I like from different parts of the world. This morning I was reading one by Julie Ford Oliver and she was talking about painting things around you that are already set up, looking for the "accidental groups which just happen everywhere around us." That totally inspired me to get the easel out to the back yard and paint these little vignettes I have everywhere right in front of me. (Specially now before winter is here and the rain begins!!!!). Thank you Julie!! 

I started today with this bird bath I bought this summer which is  just outside my kitchen.  The challenge today was that I only had a small block of time this morning and then couldn't get back to it until well after dinner, of course the light was completely different. Ran out of light and had to finish in the studio from the photo I had taken is morning.

There was another quote I read this morning  going through my head today that I kept repeating to myself: "Leave your strokes alone"  (Ted Smuskiewicz) Always have to remind myself of that, specially with oils!!

Todas la mañanas leo varios blogs de distintos artistas de diferentes parte del mundo cuyos trabajos me gustan. Esta mañana estaba leyendo uno de Julie Ford Oliver en el que ella hablaba  de pintar cosas  que estén alrededor nuestro ya armadas. Se trata de buscar "esos grupos accidentales que ocurren en todos lados alrededor nuestro". Eso me inspiró a sacar el caballete al patio y empezar a pintar escenas chiquitas que tengo ya armadas en distintos lugares de la casa y el patio. (Especialmente ahora antes de que venga el invierno y empiece la lluvia!!!!) Gracias Julie!

Empecé hoy con esta "bañera para los pajaritos" que compré este verano y que está afuera de mi cocina. Lo difícil fue hoy que que tenía solamente un rato a la mañana y no pude volver a pintar hasta bien después de la cena, por supuesto la luz había cambiado completamente. me quede sin luz y tuve que terminar  adentro con una foto que había sacado esta mañana.

Esta mañana  leí otra frase  que tuve presente todo el día y me repetí varias veces mientras pintaba: "Leave your strokes alone"  (Ted Smuskiewicz) . Siempre me tengo que recordar eso!!

Day 9: Flowers for Pat

So much for lofty goals!! I wanted to finish this one I started painting yesterday and then do todays but it was not happening, so I didn't force it, cleaned my brushes and pack it up for the day. It means I am not ahead any more, which is ok, I am still on track!

Like I said, I had these Black-Eyed Susans just begging me to paint them. The finished painting is nowhere close where I was going when I started or what I wanted it to look like but sometimes it happens that a painting starts developing a certain way and I believe that it is ok to just let it go where it wants to go. Sounds strange, I know. I also know that when I start putting random brushstrokes here and there, it is time to stop!

While I was painting them I got some bad news: a fellow artist, a very talented and kind soul passed away last week. Because I spent the rest of the time thinking about her and her family I am dedicating these flowers to her. The interesting thing is that that morning  a quote had caught my attention as well and now I think it is very fitting.

Una de las "Susanas de Ojos Marrones en mi jardin"

Y bueno, tenia tantas ideas fantasticas! Ayer dije que hoy queria terminar este cuadro en un ratito y hacer otro pero al final, no salia nada , no lo force, limpie los piceles y deje.  No estoy mas adelantada pero esta bien, no hay problema, todavia estoy al dia!

Como dije ayer, tenia estas flores amarillas que de acuerdo a google y una colombiana en google  se dicen Susanas de Ojos Marrones (Igual que se dice en Ingles). La pintura terminada no esta ni cerca de donde queria ir o lo que tenia en mente pero a veces pasa eso, una pintura se empieza desarrollar de cierta forma y yo creo que esta bien dejar que vaya en la direccion que quiere. Suena raro, ya se. Tambien me conozco y se que cuando empiezo a poner pincelas sin razon, es hora de parar.

Mientras estaba pintando, tuve malas noticias. Una artista conocida, una mujer muy amable y con mucho talento fallecio la semana pasada. Pase el resto de la manana pensando en ella y en su familia y es por eso que le dedico estas flores. Lo interesante es que ayer a la manana lei una frase que me llamo la atencion y  que me parece viene bien al caso. Dice:

Para un poco y disfruta de la vida. No es  solamente el paisaje lo que perdés por ir tan rápido - también  perdés el sentido de  hacia dónde vas y por qué  - Eddie Cantor

Wow! one week is done and onto the next one!!

This is the second one I did yesterday. I had fun with both of them. I almost did a couple more with the same subject matter today using a different part of the photo reference and a different  palette but I had cut flowers from my garden a few days ago to paint them. They were sitting right next to the easel ready to go, waiting for me to oaint them so that is what I had to do today. It was really nice to paint today without having the pressure of 100% finishing it for posting (like it was last week a few times). It is 80% finished. I am able to wait until tomorrow to finish it when it so wet.

Wow! Ya pasó una semana y se viene la segunda!!

Esta es la segunda que hice ayer. Disfrute mucho pintar las dos. Hoy casi hice un par  más en este mismo tema usando otra parte de la misma foto de referencia y otra paleta pero había cortado una flores de mi jardín hace un par de días para pintarlas. Estaban ahí al lado del atril esperando que las pintara y eso fue lo que  tuve que hacer! Fue muy bueno pintar hoy sin la presión de tener que terminar la pintura 100% (como ha sido varios días la semana pasada) esta un 80% terminada y fue bueno poder espera hasta mañana que la pintura este un poco más seca. 

Day 7: Race Day

Every year in May there is a sailing race in Victoria called Swiftsure. It is an overnight race and it goes from Victoria out to Swiftsure Banks and back in the Juan de Fuca and Haro Straight. It brings sailors from all over the place and it is a great weekend event. (Lots of times the race is nicknamed "Driftsure" when there is no wind!) Today I dug out the photo I took quite a few years ago at the race start and decided to give it a go in oils. I have tried it in watercolors, acrylics and I am still drawn to the action of the race. I wanted to capture the movement more than anything and what looks like confusion from shore.

I am happy as today I was actually able to do 2 today. I used the same reference, just different parts of the photo and as I was using relatively the same palette I painted them at the same time.
So yes! I am ahead one painting for the challenge in case I can't do it one day.

Todos los años en Mayo hay una regata en victoria que se llama Swiftsure. Es una cara que dura más de 24 horas y va desde Victoria hasta Swiftsure Banks en el Estrecho de Juan de Fuca y Haro. Atrae a   Participantes de todos lados y es un gran evento ese fin de semana. Hoy saque la foto de la pila y decidí tratarla con óleos. La he pintado hace muchos años en acuarelas y en acrílicos y todavia sme atrae mucho toda la accion de la carrera. Quería más que nada capturar el movimiento y lo que parece  confusión desde la costa. 

Estoy contenta porque hoy pude hacer 2 pinturas. Use la misma foto de referencia, partes diferentes de la foto y como usaba más o menos la misma paleta los pinte a los 2 al mismo tiempo.
Así qué, si! Tengo una de reserva  por las dudas no pueda pintar un día.

Day 6: Grey Skies

Today was a busy day and I knew I had limited time. So I decided to first work on finishing an unfinished piece  (there is no lack of that in my studio!) It has actually become quite the joke at home: when I am back from painting or my husband gets home  I usually show it to him and ask his opinion. (Yes, I  know  we shouldn't ask family what they think, still, I do it sometimes) He usually  says: well,  I know it's not finished, is it? So I think  he must be quite surprised these past few days when I am actually finishing some! Anyway, I did finish it and I will post it at some point later or keep it as a spare if I have to skip a day in the 30in 30. But in the end, I ended up doing a very little loose seascape afterwards which is what I am posting today. I love loose paintings as they are usually quite moody.

Hoy tuve  un dia muy ocupado y sabia que no iba a tener  mucho tiempo. Asi que decidi no empezar algo nuevo si no terminar una pieza no que había empezado hace unos meses (hay muchas de esas en mi taller!) Tantas que se ha transformado un poco en broma en casa: cuando vuelvo de pintar o mi esposo  vuelve a casa, normalmente le muestro lo que que he echo y le pregunto que opina, (si, ya se que no hay preguntarle a la flia lo que opinan :) Normalmente él me responde: y bueno, no esta terminada todavía no? Creo que esta sorprendido estos últimos días con todo lo que estoy terminando!  Bueno, la cosa es que  terminé una y la voy a guardar para poner en el blog tal vez otro día si no tengo tiempo uno de estos 30 días. Pero al final terminé haciendo un paisaje marino chiquito muy "suelto" como decimos en ingles. (Como se dice en español?) Me gustan mucho los trabajos sueltos porque normalmente tienen mucha personalidad.

Today was pouring by the time I got into the studio, very dark and wet so I decided to paint this sunflower which has been on my stack of photos for a looooooong time.  Today was interesting, I am learning so much through this 30 in 30 proyect. Learning about painting and about myself. I enjoyed painting the leaves the most, did lots of negative painting in this one.

Hoy estaba lloviendo muchisimo cuando empece a pintar y por eso dicidí pintar este girasol que ha estado en mi pila de fotos  desde hace mucho tiempo! Es la primera que hago usando fotos como referencia en este proyecto. Estoy aprendiendo muchismo en este proyecto de 30 en 30, aprendiendo sobre pintura y sobre mi misma. Disfrute pintando las hojas sobre todo.

I love watermelon!  And it was fun to paint! Today was the start of school for my kids. When we got home we were all  hungry, had some watermelon and I just had to paint it and the leftovers! It was a busy day and I am glad I got to paint!

Me encanta la sandía! Y fue divertido pintarla! Hoy fue el primer día de escuela para mis chicos. Cuando volvimos estábamos todos con hambre, comimos la sandía y tuve que pintarla! Fue un día super  ocupado y me alegro de haber podido pintar!

Day 3: Pair of Pears

I love pears (and flowers, gardens and chocolate). I have no idea how many times I have bought pairs just because they  looked nice, different or interesting to paint, never intending to actually eat them. :) Today the exercise was just to go back to seeing the main shapes, big brush and big strokes as I got way too caught up in details these last couple of days. They were fun to paint.

No tengo idea de cuantas veces he comprado peras porque son lindas, differentes o interesantes para pintar, nunca con la intención de comerlas. :) Hoy el ejercicio fue volver a ver las formas principales, pincel grande y pincelas grandes porque en los últimos dos días terminé fijandome demasiado en los detalles. Fue interesante pintar estas peras hoy.

Day 2: Japanese Anemone

I have had a growing bunch of Japanese Anemones in my garden for many years (they spread a lot!). Every Fall just as I am enjoying them a lot they get chopped off by deer in my front yard and I happy to say that I beat them  this year!
I had to stop painting today as I had a lot of paint on that canvas and I am still learning to use oils. I have painted in watercolours and acrylics mainly, only picked up oils in the last few months. It is a mental shift and I must say I am enjoying them a lot.

He tenido un cantero cada vez mas lleno con Anémonas Japonesas en mi jardín durante mucho años (se reproducen mucho). Todos los otoños, justo cuando mas estoy disfrutando las flores, los ciervos vienen y se comen todas las flores. Este año les gané!
Hoy tuve que parar de pintar porque terminé teniendo demasiada pintura sobre el lienzo y  todavía estoy aprendiendo a usar los óleos. He pintado con acuarelas y acrílicos principalmente, solo empecé con óleos hace unos meses y tengo que decir que los estoy disfrutando mucho.
Hay más de 300 artists anotados en este desafío, pueden ver lo que otra gente esta creando en el blog de Leslie Saeta. Todos los días todos suben las fotos de lo que han pintado ese día.

Well, there it is! What a day! Talk about preasure!
We had some cherries yesterday and I have wanted to give them a try for a long time. Now, why would I pick something unfamiliar for the first day of the challenge??? Who knowns!   I struggled and of course the two-headed monster inside my head was very busy telling me everything that was wrong with my painting. Good  lesson today on learning to trust yourself and shut the monster up for a while.
I am 80% happy with it, there are some things I really like, some I don't, but day 1 is done now. :)

Bueno, acá esta! Que día! Hablemos de tener presión!
Ayer cominos cerezas y hace rato que quiero probar a pintarlas. Ahora me digo, por que tengo que elegir algo que no me es familiar para el primer día del desafío??? Quien sabe!  Me costo y por supuesto el monstruo de dos cabezas dentro de la mía estaba súper ocupado diciéndome todas las cosas que estaban mal. Buena lección hoy, aprender a confiar en uno mismo  y hacer que el monstruo se calle un rato.

Estoy 80% contenta, hay algunas cosas que me gustan y algunas que no pero por ahora el día 1 esta listo. :)
