Reflections (#86 of 100) and Happy Dance!!

I am very, very happy to announce that "the big monster" I have been working on got accepted into Sooke Fine Arts this year!! Yes!!! Big smile!! I am doing a happy dance!! Sooke Fine Arts is one the biggest juried shows on Vanvouver Island and it was one of my goals to submit to it this year. I only say "submit to" and not "get in" as a goal because you never know with juried art shows; I did my part, put the work in (and it took a few hours!) and I am very happy with the acceptance!

I had started this canvas a few years ago and due to lack of time had never finished it. It is the largest piece I have worked on (48x60) and I learnt a ton in the process. This canvas had a mind of its own from the get go, I wanted it to go in a certain direction and things wouldn't work, so after much frustration  several times  I said to myself: "Stop fighting it, this is the way this one will be".  It has a much more realistic look than I wanted it to have.

My new found love from this painting is Cadmium Orange. It gave me the "warm glow" I was after in some areas when mixed with Dioxazine Purples and different amounts of white and/or ultramarine blue.

The show runs July 25 to August 4 at Seaparc Leisure Centre in Sooke and unfortunately I won't be in town for it, (we are going to Italy!!!! Yes, I know, bummer eh?) Put it on your calendars and be sure to stop by if you can!

Estoy muy, muy contenta de poder anunciar que "el monstruo" en el que he estado trabajando duro ha sido aceptado en la muestra Sooke Fine Arts este año!! Si!!! Gran sonrisa acá!!  Bailecito de alegría!! Esta es una de las muestras juradas más grandes en la Isla de Vancouver y era una de mis metas presentar algo para ser considerado para la exhibición. Noten que sólo digo "presentar" y no "ser aceptada" como meta ya que uno nunca sabe con las muestras juradas; yo hice mi parte, trabajé mucho (y me llevó bastantes horas!) y estoy muy contenta con la aceptación!

Había comenzado este lienzo hace muchos años y por falta de tiempo nunca lo había terminado. Es la pieza más grande que he echo y aprendí muchísimo en el proceso. Este lienzo tomó sus propias decisiones desde el comienzo. Yo quería llevar las cosas en cierta dirección y no salían para nada así que después de mucha frustración algunos días me dije: "Dejá de luchar, este va a ser de este modo". Es mucho más realista de lo que yo quería. 

Un nuevo amor que encontré en este cuadro es el Naranja Cadmin. Me dió el "reflejo cálido" que buscaba cuando lo mezclaba con Morado Dioxazine y diferentes cantidades de blanco y/o Azul Ultramarino. 

La muestra es desde el 25 de julio hasta el 4 de agosto en el Centro de Recreation Seaparc en Sooke  y desafortunadamente no voy a estar en Victoria para esa fecha (Vamos a Italia!!! Si, ya sé, que lastima que vamos a Italia no? ) Marquen la fecha en sus calendarios y pasen a verla si pueden!

Este es uno que pinté en Agsto del año pasado y no había incluído acá.

Wow, so much has happened since my last post. Days are going by too fast to get everything done!!

The week before last I went to Vancouver for a 3 day workshop with Liz Wiltzen and, as expected, I did not come home disappointed. Liz is a great artist and instructor! Some of the things we covered on the course, I had already studied or heard of before in other workshops or at other times (which does not mean that those things had sunk in anyway!!) I think that my painting is like stacking blocks..... Every time I cover a certain aspect or subject I can go deeper and build on things I already know (or thought I knew). I am able to see things differently and we are reminded of things we knew but forgot to put into practise.  I am still processing everything we covered. Again, I highly recommend you take a workshop with Liz if you ever can.

Even though I haven't been posting I have been painting like a mad woman. I've been working on my very large canvas which has been a roller coaster, some days I love it, some days I hate it.....It is almost done and then I'll show you. I have started a crow painting that I want to donate to a fundraiser and have another one on the go (boats again).

Swiftsure was also here, a sailing race that happens here in Victoria every May. I went to the start line and I took, in about an hour and a half,  592 photos! Talk about having reference material there! I should be able to find a couple that may work for a good painting.  As a matter of fact I have already roughed one on a 24x48 canvas! I am shooting for having them done by next week.


I don't want this post to get super long but this was also a big event last week. I was deeply sadenned by Robert Genn's passing. We all knew it was coming but it was truly sad when it did happen. Mr Genn was, unbeknown to him, a great influence on me. I will be forever grateful for all his insightful letters which on more than one occassion were "written specifically for me". Many times it seemed  they were EXACTLY what I needed to hear that day. I know lots of artists feel the same way. In order to honour him, I did what he said we should all do: I went to my room and painted. He is already missed. (If you don't know about Robert Genn's Twice-a-week letter, you can still get them as older ones (still applicable) and new ones written by his daughter Sara are being mailed now. Go to "The Painter's Keys" and subscribe to the emails. Highly recommend them!

Wow, han pasado tantas cosas desde la última vez que escribí. Los días pasan demasiado rápido para hacer todo lo que quiero hacer!

Hace dos semanas, fui a Vancouver  a un curso de 3 días con Liz Wiltzen y como yo esperaba, no volví desilusionada. Liz es una instructora y artista excepcional! Algunas de las cosas que vimos en el curso ya había cubierto en otros cursos (o ya había escuchado de esas cosas sin entrar en profundidad).  Creo que mi pintura puede compararse con bloques de construcción. Cada vez que aprendo algo nuevo, esos descubimientos pueden ir sobre los bloques que ya he establecido y puedo  ir a distintos niveles de profundidad. Veo las cosas de forma distinta (Y todavía estoy procesando todo lo que aprendimos en el curso!) Ya he dicho esto en otros posts: Recomiendo mucho un curso con Liz si alguna vez pueden.

A pesar de no haber estado escribiendo sí he estado pintando a lo loco. He seguido trabajando en el lienzo enorme que ha sido una montaña rusa, algunos días me encanta, otros días la oido.... Ya está casi terminado y cuando esté se los muestro. He empezado uno con cuervos para donar a una cena de recaudación de fondos y tengo otra mas empezada en un lienzo de 61x122 cm. (Veleros de nuevo).

Hablando de veleros, Swifsure  fue hace dos fines de semanas, una regata que ocurre todos los años en Mayo. Fui a la línea de largada y en una hora y media saqué 592 fotos!! Seguro que voy a poder encontrar una o dos fotos buenas para pintar! La verdad es que ya tengo una empezada, quisiera poder terminarla para la semana que viene.

No quiero que este post se haga tan largo pero tengo que mencionar un evento importante la semana pasada. Estuve muy triste por la muerte de Robert Genn. Sabíamos que iba  a pasar en cualquier momento pero de todas maneras fue muy triste cuando de verdad llegó el momento. Robert Genn fue una gran influencia para mí. Voy a estar siempre agradecida por sus cartas que muchas veces fueron escritas "especialmente para mí" ya que muchos días era EXACTAMENTE lo que yo necesitaba escuchar. Sé que muchos artistas comparten estos pensamientos. En su honor, hice lo que él siempre decía que había que hacer: andá a  tu pieza y pintá! Se lo va a extrañar mucho con seguridad. (Si no saben de las cartas que Robert Genn manda 2 veces por semana, todavía pueden recibirlas ya que se va a seguir mandando cartas viejas y nuevas escritas por Sara Genn, la hija de Robert.  Vayan a "The Painters Keys" y  pueden anotarse para recibirlas. Las recomiendo!

This is an acrylic I had started last October and finished in the last few weeks, before I wen to La Conner, Wa. I don't specifically remember where the photo was taken,  it could be ANYWHERE around here. Views like this one are what you see so often from land and from the water around the Gulf Islands. We are very fortunate to live in such a beautiful area. I am pleased with the way the painting came along, I like the general feel of it. There is something bugging me in the painting now that I see it here on the blog but I  can always go back and change it! (Won't tell you so it doesnt start bugging you!!) 

I am very excited today as I am in Vancouver at the moment to take a workshop with Liz Wiltzen. We will be learning about Painting Dynamic Landscapes for the next 3 days and I am ready! I took a workshop with her last year on Daily Painting which I thoroughly enjoyed,  she was an excellent instructor and is an outstanding artist. 

(Progress report on the large canvas: doing well, have paint all over the canvas now, had to CORRECT lots of the drawing, time now to start refining shapes and putting thicker paint on some areas :) but not until Friday when I am back home!

Este es un acrílico que había empezado en octubre del año pasado y lo terminé hace unas semanas  antes de ir a La Conner, Wa. No recuerdo específicamente dónde tomé esta foto, pero puede ser en cualquier lugar por acá. Vistas como estas es lo que se ve desde tierra y desde mar en toda esta área de las Islas del Golfo. Tenemos mucha suerte de vivir en un lugar tan hermoso. Estoy satisfecha con como quedó el cuadro. Me gusta el tono general que tiene. Hay algo que me molesta ahora que la veo acá en el blog, siempre puedo volver a casa y cambiarlo (no les voy y decir qué para que no les empiece a molestar a uds!!)

Hoy estoy muy entusiasmada porque estoy en Vancouver donde voy a tomar un curso con Liz Wiltzen. vamos a prender sobre Paisajes con dinamismo durante los 3 próximos días y estoy lista!! Tomé un curso con Liz en año pasado sobre Pinturas Diarias, ella es una artista y instructora realmente excelente. 

Informe sobre el lienzo enorme que estoy pintando: va bien, ahora ya tengo pintura sobre toda la superficie, tuve que corregir el dibujo bastante y ahora tengo que empezar a refinar algunas de las formas y poner más pintura en algunas áreas. :) Pero no hasta el viernes que es cuando vuelvo a casa.

Lemon Juice (#83 of 100) and tips for working large?

"Lemon Juice" was painted last August under the guidance of Barbara Callow at an oil painting workshop I took.  I had clearly forgotten to post this one! These little Meyer Lemons were tiny, sitting on my window sill, I chose to paint them waaaay larger than life from a photo I had taken. I was pleased with how the painting turned out and I learnt many tricks from Barbara, a wonderful artist you should check out. 

I am behind with posting as I have several paintings that are finished but have not made it to the blog. Where do the hours in the day go sometimes??

I am painting a very large piece at the moment,  it is a completely different way of working!! I find I should be using a cart with wheels to move my palette and stuff around as I usually work all over the painting at the same time as opposed to finishing sections at a time. Getting a good workout but a little nervous as I have never painted this big. 60x48! Hope it turns out the way my mind sees it! Wish me luck and are there any useful tricks for painting big you are willing to share?

Pinté "Jugo de Limón" en Agosto del año pasado bajo la dirección de Barbara Callow en un curso que tomé. Obviamenteme me había olvidado de escribir sobre este cuadro acá en el blog! 

Estos limoncitos Meyer, muy chiquitos, estaban en la ventana de mi cocina. Los pinté mucho mas grandes de lo que son en realidad de una foto que había sacado. Me gustó cómo quedaron y aprendí mucho de Barbara, una artista con mucho talento que tienen que visitar. 

Estoy super retrasada con los posts en el blog, tengo muchos cuadros que he pintado que no he logrado ponerlos acá. A dónde se van las horas del día a veces??

Estoy en este momento pintando un cuadro grande y es una forma totalmente de trabajar!! Me hace falta una mesita con ruedas para poder mover la paleta y el resto de las cosas ya que trabajo generalmente en todo el cuadro al mismo tiempo, no los termino por secciones sino que voy y vengo en las distiantas partes del cuadro. Estoy haciendo ejercicio al mismo tiempo!  (Y estoy un poco nerviosa ya que nunca he trabajado tan grande. 1.21x1.52m!)  Espero que me salga como lo tengo en la cabeza! Deseenme suerte y pasen consejos, si los tienen,  para trabajar grande??

And last but not least here is my favoruite of the trip to Washington. It was the second painting of the day and the school bus parked in this farm had called my attention earlier so I had to paint it! I found this view which I really liked; I specially liked the geometrical lines formed by the barns and buildings plus the bus of course :)

It was a great trip and we are planning to do it again, next time maybe on the Canadian side?? Who wants to come along??

Y finalmente pero no menos importante aca está mi favorito del viaje a Washington. Fue el segundo cuadro del día y el ómnibus escolar estacionado en esta granja me había llamado la atención mas temprano. Encontré este punto de vista que me gustó mucho ya que mostraba formas geometricas interesantes formadas por los edificios y graneros mas el ómnibus escolar por supuesto. :)

Fue un gran viaje que vamos a repetir el año que viene, tal vez del lado canadiense?? Quién quiere venir??

Barns #81 of 100

And there you thought we only painted red tulips! The truth is there was another painting of red and yellow fields which I am not too happy with so I haven't posted that one. There is only one more tulip festival painting left to show you after this one. We can then one move to other fun stuff!

This little one was the 3rd painting of the second day. In La Conner there is a myriad of barns and farm houses which are extremely interesting to paint. (This location would be a nice painting destination any time of the year because of this).  Many crooked barns and building, some almost falling down, with so much character! I hadn't done one with a typical barn this trip so I decided to pick this view in the distance. It was very windy and I was very pleased with my set up as it held just fine. I am using an Alla Prima Pochade box and I love it. The one I have is the  Yellowstone which is about 11x14. I can carry the wet panels in the lid and it is a breeze to set up. I also carry a backpack where I take some extra panels, paper towel, mineral spirits,  brushes and other paraphernalia but I must say I am learning  to take less and less all the time. (And of course my mug of coffee for the morning!)

Y acá ustedes pensaban que sólo pinté tulipanes rojos! La verdad es que  tengo otro con campos amarillos y rojos pero no me gusta mucho el resultado así que no lo he mostrado. Hay otro más de este viaje además de este y después podemos ver lo que he estado haciendo después y antes del viaje!

Esta fue la 3ra pintura del segundo día. En  La Conner hay una gran variedad de graneros y casas de campo que son muy interesantes para pintar. (Es por eso que en realidad es un lugar hermoso para pintar en cualquier época del año). Hay muchos edificios viejos todos torcidos que tienen muchísima personalidad, algunos parecen que ya se caen.  No había incluido un típico granero así que elegí esta vista a la distancia. Tuvimos bastante viento esa tarde y estuve muy contenta con mi equipo ya que aguantó el viento sin problemas. Tengo una caja Alla Prima Pochade, la Yellowstone es la mía, de alrededor 28x36.  Puedo transportar los paneles en la tapa y es muy fácil de armar. También llevo una mochila donde tengo paneles extra, toallas de papel, pinceles y otro montón de cosas. Pero debo admitir que estoy aprendiendo  a llevar cada vez menos cosas. Por supuesto también está el taza con café para la mañana!

This was the second day in La Conner, were lucky it didn't rain on us. These fields were incredible and I worked at getting the perspective right. I am happy with the way it ended up looking.

Este fue el segunda día en La Conner, WA, tuvimos suerte de que no llovió ese día. Estos campos eran increíbles y me concentré en la perspectiva. Estoy contenta con los resultados. 

Puddles (#79 of 100)

This was the second painting of the morning in our La Conner Painting Trip. There were so paintings to paint right then and there! There was time before lunch to do a small one so I settled to do the rows of red tulips with the mountains behind. Now, a little bit of information regarding how they do things. These fields are for the production of bulbs for sale, not for cut flowers. So what they do is at a certain point after the flower is open they actually deadhead them and toss the flowers in the rows, in that way the energy goes to the bulb instead of going to the flower and seed. A few weeks later they dig the bulbs up and get them ready for sale. While we were painting that morning, many workers got there and started going through the fields like locusts. You were looking at it and the purple field was turning green as the mass of workers moved along the rows. So I am almost ready to start painting the view  mentioned before with the mountains behind (see phot below) and I noticed that the field is getting smaller and smaller. They were cutting them faster that I could paint them so I decided to turn around and do the other side, as I said at the beginning, there were tons of paintings to be painted there! It had rained the night before so there were puddles in the rows creating nice lights and reflections.

Esta fue la segunda pintura de la mañana. Había tantos cuadros en ese mismo lugar! Tenía tiempo antes de almorzar y decidí hacer uno chiquito asi que me acomodé para pintar estas lineas de tulipanes rojos con las montañas atrás a la distancia. Un poquito de información con respecto a la industria de los tulipanes. Estos campos son para la producción de bulbos para la venta y no para flores para vender. A cierto punto, una vez que la flor se abre cortan las flores y las tiran ahí no mas en los surcos, de esta manera, la energía de la planta va hacia el bulbo y no a la flor y semilla. Unas semanas más tarde levantan los bulbos y los preparan para vender. La cosa es que mientras estabamos pintando esa mañana, muchos trabajadores llegaron a los campos y empezaron a cortar las flores como langostas. Estaba mirando un campo morado que lentamente se transformaba en verde cuando ellos  cortaban las flores. Y ahí estaba yo, lista para pintar un campo de tulipanes rojos y morados que se achicaba rapidamente. Los estaban cortando más rápido de lo que podía pintarlos! Por eso tuve que abandonar esa idea y mirar para el otro lado, pero como dije al comienzo, había muchísimos cuandros para pintar en este lugar. Había llovido la noche anterior y había muchos charcos que creaban lindas luces y reflejos.

I promised lots of colour in my last post and here you are!!! I just came back from a great week of plein air painting in La Conner, Washington. I went with 2 good friends and we had a blast! Lots of painting, art, art talk and friendship. 

We painted a lot, managed to do 3 paintings the first day which I will be showing to you in the next few posts. We were a touch late in the season but we had enough for sure! Fields of tulips as far as the eye can see in some spots. The smell in those fields that first day was just amazing. The weather cooperated, the light changed all the time of course as it always does in plein air painting but I was happy with what I created. More to come!

Les prometí mucho color en mi último blog y acá tienen!! Acabo de volver de un viaje a La Conner, Washington en EEUU. Fui con 2 amigas y la pasamos bárbaro! Mucha pintura, arte, charlas sobre arte y amistad. 

Pintamos mucho, logramos terminar 3 cuadros el primer día y acá va el primero. Voy  a seguir mostrándoles el resto en los próximos días. Llegamos un poco tarde en la temporada pero de todas formas tuvimos suficiente. Campos y campos de tulipanes por donde un mirara. El aroma ese primer día era espectacular. El tiempo cooperó, la luz cambiaba a cada rato por supuesto pero eso es siempre así cuando uno pinta afuera. Estoy muy satisfecha con lo que creé. Ya vienen más en los próximos días!

I am very behind with posting, have been working and painting but have not managed to post them on blogger. (Part of it is the lack of good photos of I have created)

So here goes one that I did a Friday 2 weeks ago when we (the AlFrescoes) went back to Governement House. What caught my eye was the light on the water, it kept changing all morning of course. 

I have a great treat of colour for the next few posts, I am as I write in La Conner, WA. I came with 2 friends to paint the tulip fields and boy did we have fun with colour! Today, after a very productive week, we are going back home via Vancouver where we will hit the Lawren Harris Exhibition at the Vancouver Art Gallery. It has been a great art week! We all need those every now and then!

Estoy muy retrazada con los blog, he estado trabajando y pintando pero no los puesto en blogger, en parte porque no tengo buenas imágenes de los que he creado.

Así que acá va una que pinté hace 2 semanas cuando volvimos con los Alfrescoes a la Casa de Gobierno. Lo que me llamó la atención fue la luz sobre el agua que por supuesto cambiaba a cada rato. 

Tengo una sorpresa de colores para los próximos posts. Estoy en La Conner, Washintgon en este momento. Vine con dos amigas a pintar los campos de tulipanes y si que nos hemos divertido con color!! Hoy ya volvemos después de una semana muy productiva; vamos a pasar por Vancouver y vamos a visitar la muestra de Lawren Harris en la Galeria de Arte de Vancouver. Muy entusiasmada con eso hoy!  Ha sido una gran semana de arte! Todos necesitamos una semana así de vez en cuando!

This is another plein-air painting I did in early March. We went for the weekend to Mt Washington and this was the view from our condo. I am not much of a skier so while the family spent the day on the slopes I spent the day at the easel. Everybody was happy!  

This is one of the paintings I have entered into the Alfrescoes Spring Show. It starts this Wednesday April 16 and runs until May 4 at Coast Collective on Esquimalt Lagoon. Artists will be in attendance (including moi) Saturday April 19 from 2 to 4 for the opening reception. Stop by an visit if you have time. There are some very beautiful pieces in the show!

Esta es otra pieza que pinté en plein air a principios de Marzo. Fuimos a pasar el fin de semana a Mount Washington y esta era la vista desde nuestro departamento. No soy de esquiar mucho así que mientras la familia pasó el día esquiando en la montaña, yo me pasé el día pintando. Todos estuvimos contentos! 

Esta es otro de los cuadros que ha sido incluído en la muestra de Primavera de los AlFrescoes. Comienza este Miércoles 16 de Abril y continúa hasta el 4 de Mayo en Coast Collective. Los artistas (incluída yo :) van a estar presentes el sábado 19 de abril de 2 a 4 en la recepción de apertura. Pasen a visitar si pueden, hay muchas piezas muy buenas es esta muestra!

Russell Island

Today I am framing a few pieces  that need to be taken to the Alfrescoes Annual Show starting this next week at Coast Collective. We can enter anything that has been painted plein-air and I remembered this one which meets the requirements. Russell Island is very close to Vancouver Island, we discovered it on a day-sail a couple of years ago. This painting was produced one day on the boat while the family went for a walk. I like the fresh and crisp look and the colours this one has.

Hoy he estado enmarcando algunos cuadros para llevar mañana el Show Anual de los Alfrescoes en Coast Collective que empiea esta semana. Podemos llevar cualquier pieza que haya sido pintada en plein-air y me acordé de esta que llena los requisitos. La Isla Russell esta muy cerca de la Isla de Vancouver, la descubrimos un día que salimos en el velero por el dia. Yo me quedé en el velero pintando mientras la familia se fue a hacer una caminata. Me gustan la espontaneidad y los colores de este cuadro.

This is the painting I did last Friday when I went painting with the Alfrescoes. We went to Governement House and I found this little guy in one of the herb gardens. I really liked him in between all the greys and purples from the sage, thyme, lavender and loved the pop of green/yellow from the sprouting lamb's ear. People kept walking by the sundial and guessing the time, hence the name of the painting, it's exactly what one of them said, "Yes, it's about 11 o'clock, right?" and it stuck. It is a totem called "Orca" by an Coast Salish Carver. 

I only added some lights and darkened the darks. Hard to get a good photo of it though with all the wet oils.

Esta es la pintura que hice el viernes pasado cuando fui a pintar con los Alfrescoes. Fuimos a la Casa de Gobierno y encontré este mini totem en uno de los jardines de hierbas. me gustaron mucho los grises y morados de la salvia, tomillo y lavanda y me encantaron los toques de verde/amarrilo de las hojas nuevas de la Oreja de Conejito. Hubo varios grupos de gente que pasaron por este reloj de sol, de ahi surgió el nombre de este cuadro ya que uino de ellos dijo: "Si, deben ser como las 11, no?" y ahi salió el nombre. Es un totem llamado "Orca" tallado por un artista de la Costa Salish.

Una vez en casa le agregué luces y oscuros. Es dificil sacar una buena foto cuando el oleo esta todavia fresco.

Time flies when you are having fun!! Sorry I haven't posted for a while but I have been on the road again. This time we were in the Big Island of Hawaii. Wow!!! What an experience it was! I knew there was a volcano (or two) on the island but I was not prepared to see lava EVERYWHERE or to be standing on a strecth of "land" and beach that did not exist just 20 years ago (In Kalapana area). Greatly enjoyed ourselves (kids Spring break), went for lots of hikes and visited some beautiful spots.  I saw landscapes I had not certainly ever seen before. 

I took LOTS of photos for reference and hope to get some paintings from them in the future. What I was mostly attracted to were the colours. Oh gosh, the intensity of colour was just beautiful. The foliage and flowers were mind boggling, saw some of our "house plants" on steroids! I enjoyed the birds too. There where so many! They woke us up every morning at about 5 am and they were LOUD! 

Now happy to be settling down to my routine again, everything is unpacked, went painting today with the Alfrescoes to Government House. Gorgeous day, no sun, no wind, just perfect for painting. Still needs some highlights but I am somewhat happy with what I did today. I'll touch it up and post it in the next few days. Next is going in the studio in the next few days to get sorted out and get creating!

El tiempo vuela cuando te estas divirtiendo!! Mis disculpas por no haber escrito todo este tiempo pero andaba de nuevo de viaje. Esta vez fuimos a la Isla Grande de Hawaii. Wow! Que experiencia! Sabía que había un volcán (o dos) en la isla pero no estaba preparada para ver lava EN TODOS LADOS o para estar parada en un pedazo de "tierra" y playa que  hace solamente 20 años no existía!! (En la zona de Kalapana). Disfrutamos mucho del viaje (los chicos estaban de vacaciones de primavera y vinieron con nosotros), hicimos muchas caminatas y visitamos lugares muy hermosos. He visto paisaje que no habia visto en mi vida.

Tomé por supuesto MUCHAS fotos y espero pintar algunos cuadros de ellas. Una de las cosas que más me atrajo en Hawaii fueron los colores! La intensidad de los colores era realmente hermosa. Los follajes y flores eran impresionantes, vi muchas plantas que tenemos adentro acá que parecían estaban crecidas con hormonas! Disfruté mucho de los pájaros también. Una gran cantidad que nos despertaban todos las mañanas a las 5 de lo fuerte que charlatetaban.

Ahora estoy contenta de estar de vuelta, volver a las rutinas, todo esta ya guardado. Hoy fui a pintar con Alfresoces a la Casa de Gobierno. Fue un dia hermosisimo con sol, sin viento, perfecto para pintar afuera. Le faltan algunos toques asi que lo voy a poner en el proximo blog.  En los próximos días vuelvo al estudio para ordenar y volver a crear!

Today it was the first day in a long long time  that I went out to paint with a group called the "Alfrescoes". They paint at a different location in Victoria or Greater Victoria every Friday morning, rain or shine.  I used to go but then I got busy with work, always had to work Fridays and couldn't make it so was very happy to come out. The location was High Oak Farm on the corner of Hastings and Granville  about 15 min. from where I live.  What looks like a lake is actually a flooded field which will look completely different in about 2 weeks probably! I am not thrilled with what I did, may  work on it a bit more to try and punch in some lights and simplify some areas but I was happy to go out, paint and see everyone again.  Of course, typical Victoria weather today, changed every 5 minutes,  the colours were changing pretty fast all the time but the rain held off and didn't start until we were leaving. so that was a good thing, considering it was supposed to rain all day! :)

Hoy fue el primer dia en mucho tiempo que fui a pintar con un grupo que se llaman los "Alfrescoes".
Pintan todos los viernes a la manana, en distintos lugares de la ciudad, en cualquier tiempo y todo el ano. Solía ir hace mucho tiempo pero como me tocaba trabajar los viernes, tuve que dejar de ir; por eso  estuve muy contenta de poder participar hoy y empezar a ir  regularmente. Nos juntamos en un lugar llamado Granja Robles Altos en la esquina de Granville y Hastings y queda a unos 15 minutos de donde yo vivo. Lo que parece ser un lago, es en realidad un campo inundado que en unas semanas no mas ya va a estar totalmente distinto! No estoy super satisfecha con lo que hice pero tal vez lo corrija un poco, agregue unas luces y lo simplifique un poco. De todas maneras estoy muy contenta de haber salido a pintar y ver a  la gente de este grupo de nuevo! Tuvimos tiempo típico de Victoria hoy, cambiando a cada rato, los colores tambien cambiaban rápido con el tiempo pero lluvia aguantó y no empezó hasta que nos ibamos. :)

Well am I happy or what?? I submitted this piece to The Spring FCA-Victoria Show (Federation of Canadian Artists) and it got accepted! I was pretty pleased with the finished painting which I had started back in November. I hadn't had time to finish it and I did last week. When I went in yesterday to drop off the painting for adjudication I got really  nervous when I saw how much very good work there was in that room. I walked out going.... "Hmmmmm I am not sure it will make it!".  So I was really thrilled when it did! The show runs March 12 - 23 hosted at Coast Collective, open Wednesday through Sundays, noon to 5. Opening Reception with Artists in Attendance is Sat. March 15, 2 to 4 pm. See the invite below. "Alberta Sun"  is from an image I took a couple of years ago when I visited Fort McMurray in Northern Alberta which is where my husband works. I was very fortunate that the weekend I was there the temperatures were reasonable, only about -12 which is a far cry from the -25, -30 and even colder  they get on a regular basis. We went for a walk behind where his house is, the sun was shining and it created very beautiful lights and shadows. I have some more images from that walk that I am hoping to paint from in the future.

Estoy tan contenta! Presenté un cuadro para la Muestra de Primavera del FCA-Victoria (Federación de Artistas Canadienses). Estaba bastante satisfecha con como había quedado el cuadro que había empezado en Noviembre pasado y que no había tenido tiempo de terminar hasta la semana pasada. Cuando fui a llevarlo ayer para la adjudicación me puse  bastante nerviosa cuando ví cuántos cuadros de muy buen nivel  había. Salí de ahí diciendo "Hmmm..... no sé si me lo van  aceptar!" Por eso es que estoy doblemente contenta!! La muestra es desde el 12 al 23 de Marzo en Coast Collective, abierto de Miércoles and Domingo de 12 a 5 pm. La invitación está arriba. Paren si están en la zona, saluden y disfruten del los trabajos hermosos de muchos artistas locales.

"Soles de Alberta"  es de una imagen que tomé hace un par de años cuando visité Fort McMurray en el Norte de la Prov. de Alberta que es donde mi esposo trabaja. Tuve mucha suerte que la semana que fui de visita las temperatures estuvieron bastante razonables a 12 bajo cero (en compración a los bajo 25 or 30 o mas que tienen normalmente en el invierno). Fuimos a caminar por atrás de la casa de mi esposo, el sol brillaba y creaba luces y sobres muy hermosas. Tengo mas imágenes de este viaje y seguro voy a pintar otras piezas en el futuro.

Wow! Time flies and I haven't posted for a few weeks now. I keep getting messages saying well??? Where are some new pieces??? How come you are not posting?? It is nice to be missed!!

It has been busy...  I have been devoting some time to marketing materials, like designing new business cards, new website (which I am very excited about! Not just quite yet ready to go live though) and I have been away to warmer sunnier climates!!

My husband and I spend a week in Punta Cana (no kids:)  It was a great trip where we visited with some old friends and made new ones. It was a customer appreciation trip from Wolseley, a plumbing wholesaler my husband deals with. They have organized trips like this one for the last couple of years;  last year they took us to Jamaica, this year was to Dominican Republic and next year is Cuba, hopefully we get the invite. :) Amazingly well organized, every single detail was taken care of and they always go the extra mile. Thank you Wolseley!. It was busy and didn't get to paint there but gathered LOTS of reference material; you will for sure see some "tropical" paintings soon! The colours of  the water, the sand and everything were absolutely incredible! I LOVE traveling and seeing new places and cultures!

         

This week after coming back  I worked on finishing 2 pieces that I wanted to submit for the upcoming FCA show, (Federation of Canadian Artists, a group I am an active member of). I was quite pleased with both of them but one of them sold and found a new home right away! Thank you Judy, hope you enjoy it for a long time!  The one that sold is the one in the photo above, I had shown you progress shots before. The photo is not good, but I am not home to take a better photo today and I just want to post this today! I'll post the other painting next week after I have submitted it, hopefully it makes the cut!

Wow! Cómo pasa el tiempo, hace varias semanas que no escribo en el blog y estoy recibiendo mensajes que dicen y? Cuándo nos mostrás la próxima? Es bueno ser extrañada!!

Han sido unas semanas muy ocupadas:  he estado trabajando en algunas cosas de marketing, como el diseño de nuevas tarjetas personales, nuevo sitio de internet (con el que estoy muy entusiasmada! No está listo todavía para mostrar pero le falta poco) y también he estado de viaje por tierras más calurosas y soleadas!!

Mi esposo y yo pasamos una semana en Punta Cana (sin chicos:) Fue un viaje muy lindo en el que nos visitamos con viejos amigos y conocimos nuevos. Era un viaje de apreciación al cliente ofrecido por Wolseley, uno de los distribuidores de materiales a quien mi esposo compra. Han organizado estos viajes los últimos años, el año pasado nos llevaron a Jamaica,  este año a República Dominicana y el año que viene a Cuba, ojalá que recibamos la invitación! Gracias Wolseley! Fue una semana ocupada y no pude pintar allá pero junté muchísimo material para pintar y estoy segura que van a ver algunas pinturas "tropicales" en el futuro! Los colores del agua, la arena, de todo son absolutamente increíbles! Me encanta viajar y visitar lugares y culturas nuevas.

Esta semana terminé dos cuadros que quiero presentar para adjudicación en una muestra del FCA (Federación de Artistas Canadienses, un grupo al que pertenezco). Estoy bastante contenta con los dos pero uno se vendio en el acto y encontró ya un hogar nuevo! Gracias Judy! Espero que lo disfrutes por mucho tiempo! Es el que está en la foto de arriba, yo les había mostrado una foto en progreso de este en Noviembre.   La foto de hoy no es muy buena, pero no estoy en casa hoy para sacar una mejor y quiero publicar este blog!!  Les voy a mostrar  el otro una vez que sepa el resultado para la muestra, espero que lo acepten!

Well....  this one is an oldie but I still like it! It is a large painting I did a few years ago from a photo taken in one of our trips to Desolation Sound. Rebecca Spit is on one the most beautiful places on Quadra Island! Ive been there 3 times and every time I go, I can't help myself and take as many photos as the first time I was there. In this particular shot, we were anchored in the bay for a couple of very enjoyable days.
Painting time has not been great this week, holiday last Monday, a couple of meetings, errands  and the Olympics that seem to have trapped me. I admire these kid's dedication, tenacity and discipline so much, they are inspiring! Go Canada!
BUT it is not all idle time in front of the TV, I have taken the opportunity to be working on some of the marketing things on my list. Been fussing with the look of the blog, adding things I have seen on other blogs that I liked (Or in some cases trying to as these things are complicated sometimes!), playing with the colour scheme and all that kind of "fun" and necessary stuff. What do you think of the banner at the top of the blog?
I have also taken some work to be displayed at Coast Collective and this morning I took some pieces to Equinox Health Clinic, a massage therapy clinic on Fort Street. Hope Lysanne (wonderful therapist!)  and her clients enjoy my work there for the next couple of months. :)

I also made some dinner tonight, (well.... I do make dinner other nights too) but sort of explaining why I didn't get to paint today :(   Now going for a run! :)

Esta es una pintura vieja pero todavia me gusta! Es un cuadro bastante grande que pinté hace unos años de una foto sacada en uno de nuestros viajes a Desolation Sound. La Peninsula Rebecca es uno de los lugares mas hermosos en la Isla Quadra! He visitado ese lugar 3 veces y  cada vez que voy ahi, vuelvo a sacar la misma inmensa cantidad fotos que la vez anterior. En esta toma, estabamos anclados en la bahía durante un par de dias que disfrutamos mucho.
Esta semana no he pintado mucho lamentablemente. Fue feriado el lunes, tuve reuniones y cosas que hacer y las Olimpíadas que me han atrapado. Admiro tanto a la dedicacion, tenacidad y disciplina de estos atletas! Vamos Canada! Pero todo esto no signica que he estado sentada ociosamente  todo el tiempo en frente del televisor, he aprovechado esta oportunidad para  hacer algunas de las cosas en mi lista de marketing. He estado jugando con este blog, cambiando el banner de arriba (que les parece?), agregando cosas que veo en otros blogs que me gustan, eligiendo los colores a usar y todo ese tipo de cosas que hay que hacer.
Tambien llevé cuadros a Coast Collective y esta manana llevé cuadros a la Clinica Equinox, una clinica de masajes en el centro. Espero que Lysanne (excelente terapista)  y sus pacientes disfruten de mi arte. :)
También preparé la cena ( bueno..... hago la cena otras noches también) pero estoy tratando de  explicar por que no pude pintar hoy! :(   y ahora me voy a correr! :)

There were 3 reasons for this painting today:

1- We are getting to the bottom of the box of kiwis we  harvested this year and I wanted  to paint them! (Did you know that kiwis grow in vines, you need to have a male and a female plant, bees do the pollination, the time to harvest them is after the first frost and a sign to know if they are ready is to cut one in half and if the seeds are dark then they are ready, if the seeds are still green, they need more time on the vine? We got about 75 this year, not as many as other years but the first time we harvested them at the right point!)

2- I also wanted to do a bit of Liz Wiltzen's exercise about practicing value by doing the same colour on the same colour and getting the different temperatures and values in your painting. Today it was green. I will do more on other colours. 

3- It is Friday and I hadn't done a small painting from life this week as I shared was one of my goals (1 or 2 a week) so I set  up and got it done! 

One very important thing is that when I listed all the artists from Victoria that participated in the challenge  on my blog on the 31st I forgot to include a fellow artist! I knew I was forgetting one!  (Or 2) Diana Grenko produced some little jewels this past month. Do go to her blog and enjoy her work. Enjoy the weekend! We had a little dusting of snow this morning, we are expecting more Sunday. Great cold weather to maybe paint and to watch the Winter Olympics! Go Canada! (And Argentina, they have 7 athletes!)

Hay 3 razones por las que pinté este cuadro hoy:

1- Estamos llegando al fondo de la caja de kiwis que cosechamos de mi planta y quería pintarlos antes de que se acabaran. (Sabían que los kiwis crecen en enredaderas, debe haber una planeta macho y una hembra, abejas hacen la polinización, se cosechan una vez que haya caído la primer helada y una señal de que serán listos son las semillas, hay que cortar un kiwi por la mitad y si las semillas están oscuras, están listos para cortarlos, si las semillas están verdes todavía, les hace falta más tiempo en la planta? Este año sacamos alrededor de 75, no tanto como otros años pero la primera vez que los cosechamos al punto justo!)

2- Hoy tambien queria hacer un ejercico que Liz Wiltzen escribió en un blog hace poco sobre usar un color sobre el mismo color para poder estudiar temperatura y luz y sombras (como se dice esto en español???? En inglés decimos "valores") Hoy fue verde sobre verde. Voy a hacer otros en otros colores. 

3- Es Viernes y no había echo una pintura chica esta semana como dije ayer que quería hacer, (una de mis metas es 1 o 2 cuadros chicos por semana) así que hoy la tenía que hacer! 

Una cosa muy importante es que la semana pasada cuando les conté de todos los artistas de Victoria que participaron en el desafío  sabía que me olvidaba de una persona (o más!) Diana Grenko pintó unas joyas hermosas este mes pasado. Visiten su blog y disfruten de su arte!

Que tengan buen fin de semana, esta mañana nevó un poco, esperamos más el domingo. Hace bastante frío y esta bárbaro para pintar o para ver las olimpiadas de invierno! Vamos Canadá! (y Argentina! Tienen 7 atletas!)

Maiden Voyage and goals (#71 of 100)

I needed a break after the 30 days which doesn't necessarily mean I have not been in the studio! I actually have been here pretty much everyday, thinking, regrouping, tidying up!  But yesterday was actually the first day I painted art. I came back on Monday to start selecting the work that is 100% finished and I am happy with and separated it from work that either needs to be finished, adjusted, burnt? Who knows! I started getting the "selected" ones ready for showing or to go to their new homes, painted the edges of the canvas and got them off the wall. I decided that I would put up on the wall the work that needs TLC or finishing. I have this big pile of unfinished work that will get a serious look in the next coming months.... The idea is that if they are out and about I can keep them in my radar and get them done one by one. (Or disposed of)  And it has already happened. I totally got inspired to finish a landscape I started en plein air a couple of years ago after seeing someone's blog. I wouldn't have connected it to that particular painting had it not been out in plain sight. I will attack it in the next few days. 

I have set some goals and finishing is one of them. I also want to continue to do 1 to 2 small works per week and then develop larger pieces. This will all help me get to the 100 paintings that I had set as a goal after last September. This one today puts me at 71 of 100 (starting to count since last June). 

I started Maiden Voyage during the challenge, number 26 of 30, go back there to read the story behind it if you have time and haven't seen it. I am pretty pleased with it.  I could continue to correct, add and take out for a long time but this is as far as I want to go with it. Hope you like it!

(The sun is shining in my studio while I write this and I am loving it! It was -6 this morning when I drove the kids to school!!! Was it me saying spring is here just a few days ago while I painted flowers??????)

Necesitaba tomarme unos días después de los 30 días aunque esto no quiera decir que no haya estado en el taller. He estado acá todos los días, pensando, reagrupando, ordenando!! Ayer fue el primer día que pinté arte. Volví el lunes y empecé una buena clasificación de las piezas que están 100% terminadas y me gustan. Separé esas de las que necesitan un poco más de trabajo, correcciones (o hay que quemarlas??) quien sabe! Empecé el proceso de terminar las "seleccionadas" para que estén listas para exhibir o para que se vayan a su nuevo hogar. Pinté los bordes de los lienzos y las saqué de la pared. Decidí colgar en esa pared piezas que necesitan un poco de cariño y trabajo. Tengo una pila grande de trabajos sin terminar que en los próximos meses van a ser terminadas o descartadas....la idea es que si las tengo a la vista, están en mi radar todo el tiempo y las puedo terminar una por una. Y ya pasó. Despues de leer un blog de otro artista me vino la inspiración para terminar un paisaje que empecé hace un par de años en  plein air. no hubiera echo la confección con ese paisaje si no hubiera estado a la vista. Me he puesto varias metas para este año y terminar piezas empreñadas es una de ellas. También quiero pintar por semana 1 o 2 cuadros chiquitos como los del desafío y quiero también empezar piezas más grandes. De esta manera voy a poder llegar a los 100 cuadros que me había propuesto después del desafío en septiembre pasado. Con la de hoy, estoy en 71 de 100. (Empezando a contar desde Junio del año pasado).

Había empezado Viaje Inaugural durante el desafío, la número 26 de 30, vuelvan ahí para ver la historia de este cuadro so les interesa y tienen tiempo. Estoy bastante satisfecha con lo que hice. Podría seguir corrigiendo, agregando, sacando durante mucho tiempo pero es hasta acá a donde quiero llegar. Espero que les guste! 

(El sol está brillando en mi taller mientras escribo esto y me encanta! Hoy hacía 6 grados bajo cero cuando llevé los chicos a las escuela!!!! Era yo la que decía que la primavera ya llegaba hace unos días mientra pintaba flores???????)
