I was a very busy girl last week getting ready for 2 shows, the FCA one and ALLSORTS, an eclectic mix of artists showcasing a few pieces each.  I had been invited by my friend Judee Doyle to participate in this show back in October I think. When I committed to it, I couldn't, of course, foresee the events that took place later on in November which almost prevented me from being able to participate.  But I am happy that despite everything I was able to have a couple of new pieces that I painted in February after we were out of the hospital.   The show turned out to look great. My friend Sharlene Stushnov-Lee and myself did the hanging of the artwork and we got lots of compliments on it. The opening was last Friday night, it was very well attended and lots of fun (we even had a puppet show and some opera!).
My goal with this painting was to capture the light that happens when you have very dark skies after a storm and the sun comes out tinting everything a very rich deep gold. These are the true colours you see, just as if Nature had been photopshopped!! This is again a BC Landscape, so typical of what you see when you live in this part of the world. Very blessed to live in such a beautiful place!

Esta semana pasada estuve muy ocupada preparandome para dos muestras, la de la Federación y otra llamada "De Todas Clases", un grupo ecléctico de artistas que nos reunimos para mostrar algunos de nuestros trabajos. My amiga Judee Doyle me había invitado a participar en Octubre del año pasado creo que fue. Cuando me comprometí no había por supesto podido preveer los acontecimientos de Noviembre que casi hicieron que no pudiera hacer nada para esar lista. Pero la verdad es que estoy contenta de que a pesar de todo en Febrero y Marzo después de salir del hospital pude crear un par de cuadros nuevos para incluir. La muestra salió muy bien, Mi amiga Sharlene Stushnov-Lee y yo  hicimos la instalación y recibimos muchos elogios. La recepción de Artistas fue el viernes pasado a   la noche, hubo mucha gente y estuvo muy divertida, tuvimos hasta hasta títeres y ópera!
Mi meta con esta pintura fue capturar la luz que hay cuando los cielos se ponen muy oscuros después de una tormenta y sale el sol, tiñiendo todo de un  dorado profundo. Estos son colores verdaderos y es como si a la Naturaleza le hubieran echo Fotoshop!! Este es un paisaje de BC (British Columbia) que es tan típico de lo que se ve cuando uno vive en esta parte del mundo. Estoy muy agradecida de vivir en un lugar tan hermoso!

I am very excited to share with you that I have had one piece accepted into the Juried 2015 Spring Exhibition with the Federation of Canadian Artists, Victoria Chapter. It is really an honour and a privilege to be part of this show. It is always a bit stressful to wait for the news, one always hopes for the best but of course inner demons of doubt always play with me while I wait. It is reassuring for me as an artist to have my work included in juried shows as it is always somehow validating what I do. "Afternoon Quiet" was finished this past year and I have already shared it on my blog but hadn't been in any shows this past year, which was good since I haven't been able to really prepare for these submissions with the events of the last few months. The photo is not the best, very hard to photograph as it shows all the shine.
Please come to the opening if you are in the area, today, Saturday April 11, from 2 to 4 pm, meet the artists and enjoy local art. The show runs until April 19.

Estoy muy contenta de contarles que me aceptaron un cuadro en la Exhibición de Primavera de la Federación de Artistas Canadienses, Victoria. Es realmente un honor y un privilegio poder mostrar mi trabajo en esta muestra. Siempre es bantante estresante esperar el resultado, uno siempre espera lo mejor pero los demonios internos de dudas siempre juegan conmigo mientras tanto. Me da mucha satisfacción como artista cuando mi trabajo es aceptado en muestras juradas ya que revalida lo que que hago. Terminé "Tarde Tranquila" este año pasado y ya se los había mostrado en mi blog pero no lo había puesto en ninguna muestra, que vino bien ya que no he podido prepararme adecuadamente para estas muestras con los eventos de los último meses. La foto no es la mejor, es muy difícil fotografiar adecuadamente ya que muestra el brillo del varniz.
Por favor, si están en la zona, pasen por la Recepción con los Artistas, hoy Sábado 11 de Abril, de 2 a 4 pm, pueden conocer a los artistas y disfrutar de arte local. La muestra corre hasta el 19 de Abril.

I finished the last post by mentioning I had exciting news so I think I'll start with that today. We have for some time now been looking for a house and we finally found THE one that fits our needs and we like!!! Finally!! We looked at about 100 houses!  It has a lot more space, it is very close to the kids' school and activities and the best part of all is that it has a great space for my studio, full of natural light! We are very excited about the change and quite sad about leaving the beautiful place we are in now. We have been here for 12 years, we built this house ourselves and put many hours and much love and work to turn it into our home. But the time has come and we are embracing it! Needless to say, my painting time is quite limited or non-existent, my studio is half packed BUT I am committed to still do creative things and drawing is something that I can continue to do on a regular basis. I am actually going into the studio right now to finish a painting I need t have ready for a show on Thursday. This little zentangle  was cretated a couple of weeks ago and I quite like the organic shapes that emerged. More good news to come in the next post! Can't use them all up at once! :)

Terminé el post anterior diciendo que tenía buenas noticias  y hoy voy a empezar con eso! Hace un tiempo ya que estamos buscando casa y finalmente encontramos una que  sirve para nuestras necesidades y que nos gusta! Tenemos mucho mas espacio, está muy cerca de la escuela y actividades de los chicos y la mejor parte es que tiene un taller hermoso para mí lleno de luz natural! Estamos muy entusiasmados con el cambio y a la vez tristes de dejar este  hermoso lugar en el que vivimos ahora. Hemos estado en esta casa durate 12 años, la construímos nosotros y hemos puesto mucho amor, trabajo y horas para tranformarla en nuestro hogar. Pero ha llegado el momento de seguir adelante y estamos listos! Demás está decir que no tengo mucho o nada de tiempo para pintar en este momento, mi taller está ya la mitad en cajas pero voy a seguir dibujando y creando  cada minuto que pueda. Apenas termino de escribir esto voy a terminar un cuadro que tengo que tener listo para una muestra que comienza el jueves. Este zentangle fue creado hace un par de semanas y la verdad es que me gustan bastante las formas organicas que aparecieron. Tengo mas buenas noticias en mi próximo post! No puedo contarles todas las noticias juntas!!

It's all about creating right?

Continuing with my addiction to sketching I decided a few weeks ago to take a one day workshop at Coast Collective on Bookbinding. We made own own sketchbooks and I loved it! I wanted to learn to bind simple sketchbooks so I could put together drawings done on singles sheets. Great for the sketches done on a trip for example.  These are some pictures of the one I made. It has a soft  leather cover, I may add a bit more rigid inside but I want to try it first.  We used some gelli prints(I am dying to try that!) for the first and last page (sorry Tracy, I don't remember if these have a specific name!) and I used beads and coloured thread for the binding. I also made a wrap with simple black elastic and added an inspirational quote on it.  Thank you Tracy Leal for a most enjoyable day! Do visit her Facebook Page to see the beautiful work she does!

Siguiendo con mi adicción a hacer bosquejos y dibujos todo el tiempo decidí hace unas semanas tomar un curso en Coast Collective para aprender a "encuadernar". Hicimos nuestros propios cuadernos de bosquejos con papel de acuarela y me encantó! Quería aprender algunos principios simples para poder encuadernar mis propios dibujos echos en pedazos de papel de acuarela. Puede ser bárbaro para organizar los bosquejos echos en un viaje por ejemplo! Aquí tienen algunas fotos del que yo hice. Tiene lomo suave de cuero, tal vez le agrege algo mas rígido pero lo quiero probar primero. Usamos Gelli Prints para la primera y ultima pagina (me estoy muriendo de ganas de probar hacer algunas) y usé cuentas de vidrio e hilo de colores  para la encuadernación. También hice una banda para cerralo y le agregué una chapita con una frase con isnpiración.  Gracias Tracy Leal por día muy satisfactorio! Tengo noticias muy interesantes para contarles la próxima vez. Van a tener que volver! :)

Wow, we had a blast!! TC and company finally calmed down from the excitement of being here and posed for me for a couple of hours. They were delighted to find on my coffee table a couple of books on Traveling Destinations and Must-See places. They spent the entire time hanging out on a pile of some of my favourite art and travel books in my studio planning their next escapades (I didn't have the heart to tell them it was all already planned out for them!). All in all we spent a wonderful week, telling stories of travels, art and painting and it was all music to my ears as traveling is one of my passions. I LOVE to discover new places and cultures and can't wait to go on another adventure.
It was quite the teary event yesterday when I put them back in the box and sent them off to their next destination: Saskatchewan! (one of Canada's provinces, the third one from the left). I did check the weather forecast for them in SK and it shouldn't be too bad (It can be very cold there!)! Have fun with them Christine, the next artist to host them :)
Not sure if the painting is finished yet, but I had had enough of it that day! I may go back in and redefine some lines, what do you think? Is it finished to you? Comments and suggestions always welcome!

Wow, cómo nos divertimos!! Finalmente se calmaron un poco después de la exitación de estar acá y posaron un par de horas para que los pintara. Se pusieron súper contentos de ver en mi mesa del living un par de libros de Destinos del Mundo y Lugares que Deben Visitarse. Se pasaron todo el tiempo sobre una pila de mis libros de arte y viajes favoritos discutiendo y planeando sus próximas escapadas. (No tuve el coraje de decirles que ya está todo planeado!!) La verdad es que lo pasamos bárbaro, contando historias de nuestros viajes, hablando de arte, pintura y todo eso fue música para mis oídos ya que el viajar y el arte son dos de mis pasiones. Me ENCANTA descubrir lugares y culturas nuevas y espero ansiosa nuestra próxima aventura.

Hubo lágrimas en la despedida ayer cuando los puse en la caja y los despaché para Saskstchewan (una de las provincias de Canadá, la tercera contando desde el Pacífico) Me fijé en el pronóstico y por suerte no está tan malo, puede hacer mucho frio ahí! Espero que te diviertas con ellos Christine! (La próxima artista que los va a alojar:)

No estoy segura si esta pieza está terminada todavía, qué les parece? debería seguir refinando algunas partes? Sugerencias siempre son  bienvenidas.

International Visitors

TC and Co couldn't believe there was no snow in Canada!!

I am very excited to share with you that TC and Co. are visiting us in Victoria last week. I had put my name down about a couple of years ago to host and paint TC, The Traveling Chicken and I was very happy a few weeks go when I got the email that saying they were on the way.  I was a bit nervous as this is a really well-traveled chicken and I wanted to make sure he felt at home. TC has been to India, every state in the United States, UK, France, Hungary, Greece, Netherlands, Scotland, Canada and more. They were actually thrilled to get here after being detoured due to to snow storms in the US (the itinerary was North Carolina, Florida, Toronto, Vancouver and finally Victoria).  They were relieved  to be able to get out of the box and stretch a bit after such a long trip.

Now, they confessed they were a bit nervous about coming to Canada in the winter time, after all, Canada IS ice and snow right? Well.... Were they surprised or what??!?!?  All they kept saying as they looked out my kitchen window  was: "Where is the snow??????" I shared with them that they have actually come to the "tropics" of Canada. We ARE on a "small island in the Pacific" after all. True. Vancouver Island in the Pacific North West. We haven't had any snow here this year, snowdrops are long gone, daffodils are up and there are flowers everywhere! I think they like it here! 

They posed  for me for a short while so I could just do a quick sketch and blind contour drawings.   They promised to pose longer at some point this week.

Estoy muy contenta de contarles que TC y Compañia están de visita en Victoria esta semana pasada. Hace dos años que puse mi nombre en una lista para alojar y pintar a TC, el Pollo Viajero y me alegró mucho cuando recibí el email diciendo que estaban en camino. Estaba también un poco nerviosa ya que este pollo es de mundo y quería quese sintiera cómodo en nuestra casa. TC ha ido a India, todos los estados en EEUU, el Reino Unido, Francia, Hungría, Grecia, Holanda, Escocia, Canada y más! Ellos estaban felices de haber llegado despues de desvíos  por tormentas de nieve en EEUU, (el itinerario fue Carolina del Norte, Florida, Toronto, Vancouver y finalmente Victoria). Estuvieron muy aliviados de haber podido salir de la caja y estirarse después de un viaje tan largo. 

Ellos me confesaron que estaban un poco preocupados por venir a Canadá en el invierno, ya que Canadá es todo hielo y nieve, no? Qué sorpresa que se llevaron!!! Lo único que decían sin parar mirando afuera de la ventana de mi cocina era: ¿y dónde está la nieve??? Les conté que en realidad ellos han venido a los "trópicos" de Canadá. Sí, estamos en una "pequeña Isla en el Pacifico". Es verdad. La Isla de Vancouver en el Noroeste Pacifico. No hemos tenido nada de nieve este año, las campanitas ya hace rato que se acabaron, los narcisos están a pleno y hay flores por todos lados! Me parece que les gusta estar acá. 

Posaron un rato para que yo hiciera unos bosquejos, me prometieron posar por más tiempo en algún momento esta semana.

Adventures from my Sketchbooks

Despite the lack of posting and very limited "me" time,  I have been using my creative juices on a daily basis doing a bit of everything.  My goal is to do something creative every single day, whether it is some scribbles on a sketchbook, splattering paint on watercolour paper or an oil. Everything contributes to the greater goal which in my case is to become a better artist. (And to keep my sanity to some extent :) Some days I have more time than others (my usual day as I mentioned in a previous post is to drive my son Mateo to school or appointments and then just sit and wait, some days the whole day, it's like having a full time job!) Those days my sketchbooks come in really handy!

Last year I had signed up for Sketchbook Skool, online sketching and drawing 6-week long classes. Every week you are exposed to a different instructor through videos and tutorials, you get assigned homework and you have the whole week to work on them. (You can however watch the videos at any time if you get behind).  There is a very active, inspiring and supportive online community surrounding SBS. It has been REALLY good for me. I have never been too much of sketcher or drawer and I do know that it is a very important skill to have and an excellent habit to get into. I have always loved to see travel journals and sketchbooks and been very jealous of artists doing them all the time. Well..... the good news is I have my own stack now. I have drawn and sketched more in the last 6 months than I have in the previous 6 years! All of them are for me, art that I create for myself, not as an end product to show and sell but as a means to learn and practice. I always have a sketchbook on me now. :) In the photo there are just some examples of some of the fun I have been having lately! Thank you for stopping by and enjoy your day!

A pesar de tener muy poco tiempo para "mi", he estado usando mis jugos creativos todos los días haciendo un poco de todo. Myimeta es hacer algo creativo todos los días, ya sea  garabatos en mi cuadernos de sketches,  acuarelas sobre papel or un óleo. Todo ayuda a acercarme a mi gran objetivo que es ser una buena artista. (Y mantener mi cordura, en cierta forma). Algunos días tengo más tiempo que otros (mi día normal ahora es llevar a mi hijo Mateo a la escuela o algún turno y esperar, a veces todo el día, es como tener un trabajo de tiempo completo!!) En esos días mi cuaderno de bosquejos me viene muy a mano!

El año pasado me había anotado en Sketchbook Skool, 6 semanas de clases online de bosquejos y dibujo. Cada semana hay un instructor diferente y de esa manera estás expuesto a diferentes estilos por medio de videos y lecciones. Hay deberes que se deben completar durante la semana.  Hay también una gran comunidad muy muy activa online que inspira y apoya constantemente. SBS ha sido muy muy bueno para mí. Nunca he sido de dibujar mucho o hacer demasiados bosquejos y sé que es  una habilidad muy importante y un hábito excelente. Siempre me han encantado los cuadernos  ilustrados de viajes por ejemplo y me he puesto celosa de esos artistas que lo hacen constantemente.  Bueno..... las buenas noticias son que ahora tengo mi propia pila. He dibujado y echo bosquejos más en los últimos 6 meses que en los 6 años pasados! Todos son para mí,  arte que hago para mí, no con la idea de que sean un producto final para mostrar y posiblemente vender si no que son una forma de aprender y practicar. Siempre tengo y cuaderno conmigo ahora! :) En la foto hay algunos ejemplos de cuánto me estoy divirtiendo ultimamente! Gracias por la visita y espero que tengan un muy buen día!

This was the first painting I did this year after not painting for 2 months. It is always a scary experience to get back to the brushes after a lengthy absence: will I remember how to do it? Where do I start? OMG! I am afraid!  So for me the best thing  to do is to play some music and just get started, once I get going it's like riding a bicycle, sometimes a bit rusty, but it all comes back (thankfully!)

Again, I am enjoying my adventure with COLOUR. I had this image from years ago, flowers from a summer market stand. I had fun and am satisfied with the results even when I know it is not a masterpiece! I was more focused on the process this time and it worked, it was very therapeteutical after the stress from the last few months. Hope you like it! :)

Esta fue la primer pintura de este año después de no haber pintado durante 2 meses. Siempre es una experiencia bastante temerosa volver a tomar los pinceles después de una ausencia: me voy a acordar de como hacer esto? Dónde comienzo? Tengo miedo! Cuando esto me pasa lo mejor que puedo hacer es poner música y empezar; una vez que comienzo es como andar en bicicleta, a veces un poco herrumbrada, pero todo vuelve a funcionar (Gracias a Dios!)

Nuevamente, estoy disfrutando mi aventura con COLOR. Hace años que tengo esta imagen, flores de un stand en un mercado de verano. Disfruté pintar este cuadro y estoy satisfecha con el resultado aún cuando sé que no es una obra maestra! Estaba mas enfocada en el proceso está vez y funcionó bien ya que me ayudó a relajarme un poco del estres de los últimos meses. Espero que les guste! :)

I had to hold off  showing this one as it went to Italy and the recipients didn't know anything about it.
Felipe is my 8-month-old Italian nephew who is absolutely adorable. My brother had sent me a picture of those cute shoes when Felipe was still in his mama's tummy. His first shoes. I had saved the photo, painted back at the beginning of November, had lots of fun with it and was only able to ship it in January after things calmed down a bit in my life. I was very worried it had gotten lost in the mail but last week one day I got this photo and was thrilled to know the painting finally made it all the way to Como. :)







Tuve que esperar para mostrarles este cuadrito ya que fue a Italia y los dueños no sabían nada. Felipe es mi sobrino italiano de 8 meses que es hermoso y estas son sus primeras zapatillas. Mi hermano me había mandado esta foto cuando Felipe estaba todavía en la panza de su mamá. Había guardado la foto y cuando tuve tiempo a comienzos de Noviembre pasado la había pintado  y solo pude despacharla en enero una vez que las cosas se calmaron un poco en mi vida. Estaba muy preocupada porque creí que se había perdido pero me puse muy muy contenta la semana pasada cuando recibí esta foto de Felipe con el paquete que había finalmente llegado a Como. :)

This is the last painting I did last year, the day my son went into the hospital. Little did I know what was ahead of us while I was painting that morning!   Our life changed in a nanosecond, thankfully it is slowly coming back to normal, or a new normal. I am EXTREMELY thankful for the way things are progressing with  Mateo's recovery.
The rose is from a photo I took while walking along Corona del Mar in California. I painted it on canvas and didn't enjoy the process as much as when I paint on board but I am pleased with it. The interesting is that my approach used to be different and I used to love canvas! Hmmm, ..... I am just thinking out loud here... Maybe canvas are for acrylic and boards are for oils in my world. Maybe some  painters wit more experience  are going Duh! but I think it is more personal preference than anything else, isn't it?

Esta es el último cuadro que hice el año pasado, el día que mi hijo entró al hospital. No tenía idea de lo que nos estaba por pasar mientras pintaba esa mañana! Nuestra vida cambió en un nanosegundo y gracias a Dios de a poco está retornando a lo normal, la nueva normalidad. Estoy por supuesto EXTREMADAMENTE agradecida de que todo esté progresando tan bien con Mateo.

Esta rosa es de una foto que saqué caminado en Corona del Mar en California. La pinté sobre lienzo y no disfruté el proceso tanto como cuando pinto en panel de madera pero estoy contenta con cómo quedó. Es bastante interesante porque mi proceso era distinto y antes me gustaba mas el lienzo!! Hmmm..... estoy pensando en voz alta..... tal vez los lienzos son para acrílicos y los paneles son para óleos en mi mundo. Tal vez algunos artistas con mas experiencia dicen "Y Claro!" pero creo que es mas que nada preferencia personal, no?

So about a lifetime ago, back in November of last year, I took a wonderful workshop with Dreama Tolle Perry. I have admired her work for a quite a while and when a space opened up in one of her workshops I just had to go. Took a few days, turned it into a mini vacation with my husband and we had a lovely time in Newport Beach, CA.  I was after learning her application of colour and brushstroke, her paintings have an impressionistic look which I just love. I learnt a LOT!  See here for my post about her workshop and the work we did in it.
"Dressed up to the Nines" came out of an image I had taken years ago. On the way to my in-laws, there is this house with beautiful gardens that was always decorated in very funky ways. You should have seen the Xmas displays! Anyway, I hadn't tackled it and I decided to give it a try the week after I came back from Dreama's workshop. They say you should apply what you have learnt in a workshop as much as you can the week after so it solidifies and doesn't go to forgotten land. I had a blast with this one, loved painting all those flowers and outrageous colours  in the scarecrow. Hope you like it!
My son is doing very well, slowly reinserting himself in school. He is taking 4 courses now, Math, Science, Socials and English plus Physio and other therapies. He is a busy boy! which make me a busy Mom as I spend my days now driving and waiting it seems. Spring is here though and I am loving going for walks and sketching while I wait (when I am not organizing schedules and appointments :)

Hace toda una vida, en Noviembre del año pasado tomé un curso espectacular con Dreama Tolle Perry. He admirado su trabajo desde hace bastante tiempo y cuando vi que tenía un espacio en uno de sus cursos, lo tomé! Mi esposo y yo entonces nos tomamos unos días extra y nos hicimos una mini vacación, la pasamos muy bien en Newport Beach, California.  Fui especialmente a aprender su manejo de color y pincelada, sus pinturas tienen un aire impresionista que me encanta. Aprendí muchísimo. Ver acá mi post sobre el curso y el trabajo que hicimos.
"Toda Vestida" salió de una imágen que saqué hace años. Camino a la casa de mis suegros hay una casa con jardines hermosos y muchas  flores. Siepre decoran el jardín con cosas como estas. Tienen que ver lo que hacen para Navidad a veces! Nunca me había atrevido a pintarla por los colores y decidí hacerlo la semana después del curso con Dreama. Dicen que despues de un curso hay que tratar de pintar  mucho la semana sigueitne para poner en práctica y solidificar lo aprendido.  La  pasé espectacular con este cuadro, me encantó pintar esas flores y colores exhuberantes del espanta pájaros. Espero que les guste!
Mi hijo anda muy bien, de a poco reinsertandose en la vida escolar. Está haciendo 4 cursos , Matemática, Ciencias, Geografia e Historia y Literatura Inglesa además de fisioterapia  y otras terapias.  Es un chico muy ocupado! lo que me hace una mamá muy ocupada ya que me paso los días ahira manejando y esperando. Ya está llegando la primavera y me encanta ir a caminar y dibujar mientras espero (cuando no estoy organizando horarios :)

January Collage

Well.... I can't say that I did super well, managed to do 9 zentangles only but it is better than none which was what I thought I would be able to do at the beginning of December. I did do as well a whole bunch of sketches and drawings that I never posted. More important than anything, I learnt something new that I am sure I'll be able to apply in my artwork.
Thank you for your support and encouragement. It was wonderful to follow the posts of so many artists that jumped right in and were able to play with their art for a concentrated period of time. I do believe it does make a big difference in the quality of what you produce as an artist. Thank you Leslie Saeta for hosting it again. I hope you decide to do it again in September!

Bueno..... No puedo decir que anduve bárbaro, alcancé  a hacer 9 zentangles solamente pero es mejor que nada, que es lo que creí que iba a poder hacer en realidad al principio de Diciembre. Hice también varios dibujos y bosquejos que nunca publiqué. Lo mas importante de todo es que aprendí algo nuevo que estoy segura voy a poder aplicar en mi arte.
Gracias a todos por el apoyo y aliento. Fue maravilloso seguir el progreso de tantos artistas que participaron y jugaron con su arte durante este periodo concentrado e intenso. Estoy convencida de que mejora la calidad del arte que producimos como artistas. Gracias Leslie Saeta por haber organizado este desafio de nuevo, espero que lo hagamos de nuevo en Septiembre!

I have been drawing but I haven't been posting. Life has changed again:  we are readjusting to being back home and Mateo, my son, getting slowly back into school. I am mainly a schedule coordinator and taxi driver now! (Which is a great thing, I am not complaining! He is doing extremely well, re-inserting back into regular life!) The thing is that I am running on a very low battery these days, probably just the stress of it all catching up with me so even when I may have the time to paint here and there, honestly I don't have the energy for it at the moment.  Have been drawing and sketching though and enjoying it.

He estado dibujando pero no estado esribiendo en el blog. La vida ha cambiado de nuevo ahora que mi hijo Mateo ya no está en el hospital, está de vuelta en casa y recomenzando de nuevo muy lentamente con la escuela. Ahora yo soy coordinadora de horarios y taxista! (lo que es buenísimo, no me quejo! Está excepcionalmente bien, re insertandose en la vida normal) La cosa es que ando con pocas baterías estos días, probablemente el estrés de todo lo que he vivido en los últimos dos meses.  A pesar de tener un poquito de tiempo disponible no tengo energía para pintar honestamente. Sí he estado dibujando y haciendo bosquejos y lo estoy disfrutando mucho.


I started this zentangle (the one below) a few days ago and I was really liking it until towards the end  I chose the wrong pattern. It completely changed the look of it all and I didn't like it too much any more  but I learnt a lot about  transitioning from one pattern to another. I also chose to leave the sides straight which made it very static.

Comencé este zentangle hace unos días (el que está abajo) y me estaba gustando hasta que casi al final le agregué el diseño equivocado. Cambió el dibujo por completo y no me gustó más pero aprendí mucho sobre cómo hacer funcionar las transiciones de un diseño a otro. Además había decidido que los costados fueran derechos lo que hizo que todo fuera muy estático.

Then I said ok, I like some of what happened here so I started again using those elements I liked, changed a few things and thought putting the one at the top was a great idea...... hmmmm, not so much. It gave me the instant feeling of oppression and barb wire (who knows where that came from, but it makes me think of a chicken coop!)  See the photo below.

Así que dije bueno, me gustan algunas de las cosas que pasaron acá y comencé otro usando esos elementos que me habían gustado, cambié algunas cosas y me pareció que usar el diseño de arriba era una gran idea.... Hmmmmm, no tanto. Me dió la sensación de opresión y alambrado (quien sabe de donde salió esa idea, me hace pensar en un gallinero!) Es la imagen de abajo.

 This is my favourite so far... I was trying to use organic shapes and landscape as inspiration and I ended up with this design that makes me think of the ocean and under water. In order to learn about zentangling I have been following a book called "One Zentangle a Day" by Beckah Krahula. I am going through the chapters, learning new patterns and then producing a daily (or not so daily) zentangle. There is wealth of information on internet of course for anyone interested in starting out. Wouldn't some of these designs look great incorporated into semi abstract larger mixed media pieces???? Hmmmm...... My wheels are turning!

(Update on my son: He is is doing SOOOO well. We may know tomorrow his discharge date from the hospital, it was tentatively booked for Feb 5 but he is doing so we've been told they will move it earlier. He started today doing some school work, we will see how he does and progressively increase the load. He is walking without crutches and we see light at the end of the tunnel. Life is good :)

Este es mi favorito hasta ahora. Estaba tratando de usar formas orgánicas y el paisaje como inspiración y terminé con este diseño que me hace pensar en el océano y todo debajo del agua.  Para aprender sobre el "Zentangle" estoy siguiendo un libro que se llama "Un Zentangle por Día" por Becka Krahula. Hago los capítulos, aprendo nuevos diseños y produzco un zentagle diario (o no tan diario). No estarían muy buenos algunos de estos diseños incorporados a trabajos semi abstractos mas grandes????? Hmmmm....... se me vienen un montón de ideas!

(Noticias de mi hijo: anda TAN bien!!! Mañana tal vez sepamos si le dan de alta en los próximos días, esa fecha estaba tentativamente marcada para el 5 de Febrero pero como anda tan bien, nos han dicho que van a adelantar esa fecha. Hoy él comenzó a hacer un poco de deberes para la escuela, vamos a ver cómo responde y  si se puede de a poco aumentar la cantidad. Está ya caminando sin muletas ni bastones y finalmente vemos la luz al final del tunel. La vida es buena. :)

This is today's offering. I wanted to use the same main "characters" as yesterday, I wasn't happy with one particular tangle I had added and I wanted to explore them further. It's ok but I don't love it. The name today comes from a moment this evening. While I was sitting here doing this tangle, my son was next to me doing homework he had brought from the hospital, some concentration and focusing exercises. At one point I thought, Thank you God, as I have said SO many times in the last few weeks. A big sense of gratefulness comes over one at times. I am grateful he is here with us and grateful he is performing regular activities. And I know things will only get better! :)

Este es el ofrecimiento de hoy. Quería usar los mismos "personajes" de ayer ya que no había estado contenta con un diseño en particular y quería explorarlos un poco mas. Está bien pero no me encanta. El nombre de hoy vino de un momento esta noche. Estaba sentada acá y mientras hacía este  zentangle my hijo estaba al lado mío haciendo sus deberes que trajo del hospital, ejercicios para concentración y focalización. En un momento pensé: Gracias Dios!, como he dicho TANTAS veces estas semanas pasadas. Un gran sentimiento de agradecimiento me viene a menudo. Agradecida no solo de que esté con nosotros y agradecida de que pueda realizar actividades normales. Y se que las cosas se van a poner cada día mejor!  :)

This is what  I produced today. The name comes from thinking how precious life and health are, how we take so much for granted and many times we realize how much we were able to do when we no longer can.  One of the new patterns today made me think of a jewel hence the precious thought. Wish I had done a couple of things differently but the main purpose of these designs is to just do them and loose myself more than having a wonderful product. Hope you all enjoyed your weekend.

Esto es lo que produje hoy. El nombre viene de pensar en lo preciosa que son la vida y la salud, como damos mucho por sentado y muchas veces nos damos cuenta de lo que podiamos hacer cuando ya no podemos hacerlo. Uno de los diseños de hoy me hizo pensar en una joya y eso me hizo pensar en lo "precioso". Ojala hubiera echo un par de cosas diferente pero la razón pricipal de estas creaciones es el echo de hacerlo y perderme mas que tener un producto terminado. Espero que todos hayan tenido buen fin de semana.

Didn't get to do one yesterday, did this one today and I tried something different. I had thrown some colour on the paper yesterday, just a wash of colours. So today I drew overtop of that. It's ok, I missed the sharpness of the white paper around it. I may grab white acrylic and do a white border around it.

Good progress for my son. He is walking with elbow crutches, is able to walk without them and we have a tentative release day from the hospital of Feb 5! We have started however to come home for dinner and overnight stay, and we spend the whole day from 9 till 3ish at the hospital in all sorts of therapy sessions. Just trying is new routine and see if it works. So far so good.

Ayer no pude hacer nada, hice este hoy y probé algo differente. Había puesto un poco de color en este paper ayer, simplemente una mezcla de colores. Así que hoy dibujé arriba de ese color. Está bueno pero extrañé el brillo blanco del papel alrededor del dibujo. Tal vez le agrege una banda de acrílico blanco alrededor. 

Buen progreso con mi hijo.Esta caminando con bastones (y puede caminar sin ellos). Tenemos una fecha tentativa para el alta del hospital del 5 de Febrero! Hemos empezado a venir a casa todas las noches, cenamos y dormimos en casa y estamos de nuevo en el hospital desde las 9 hasta las 3 para todas las terapias distintas que él tiene. Estamos probando esta nueva rutina para ver como funciona. Hasta ahora bien.

Este es el ofrecimiento de hoy. No he decidido todavía si voy a agregarle color o no, probablemente si. Realmente disfruté aprender este diseño como de hojas, me atrajo seguro por mi amor a las plantas y formas orgánicas. Gracias a todos por los mensajes y emails que recibí desde el post de ayer. El apoyo ha sido extraordinario desde el comienzo, gracias!

"Serenity Prayer"

I have been very quiet and for a good reason. Unfortunately life threw our way one of those unthinkable things and I have been been doing whatever needs to be done. I apologize in advance if this post gets lengthy.

Six weeks ago last Friday, our 15 year old son Mateo had a brain hemorrhage due to a congenital malformation (AVM) which required emergency surgery. There were never any symptoms and it all came as a huge surprise but despite all that we are extremely fortunate that after 21 days in intensive care we still have him with us and doing remarkably well. Thankfully the hemorrhage didn't cause too much damage that we know of at the moment (he is in full use of his mental capacities, his memory and sense of humour are all there, he has pretty much full use of his left arm and on Friday he walked for the first time  with the help of a walker.) Doctors and nurses are commenting in how it is pretty much a miracle. I believe in miracles now and I am so very thankful. It has been of course an emotional roller coaster. 

I have been living at the hospital with him since Nov 21 and of course have had no time (or desire at times) to do any art. He is now in the neurological rehab floor, we have also started to come home on weekends, Christmas and New Year. The second day my daughter packed some things to take to the hospital for me as I never came back home  after we went into emergency, my sketching supplies were among those very first things  but I had no desire to record on paper what I was surrounded by. As things started to get less critical I started to doodle, started to do some "zentangling" which is a combination of meditation and drawing patterns. It is mindless, requires very few supplies and can done anywhere. It was my way of doing something for myself, loosing myself while at the hospital. 

While he was still in Intensive care, towards the beginning of December a friend posted on facebook about the 30 day challenge and I was very upset when it dawned on me I wouldn't be able to do it. I have done 3 of the 4 that have happened and had every intention of doing it again. Unfortunately, to add insult to injury I woke up in Jan 1 (I was planning to go paint) sick as a dog with a flu bug or something. I have spent the last 3 days in bed, but I have decided that I will do the challenge anyway. It will be a "However Many Whatevers in 30 Days". Doesn't matter what, doesn't matter how many. The goal is to do something creative for myself to see about replenishing my tanks which are pretty empty at the moment.

So here is the first creation of the year, a zentangle called "Prayer". This came to me as  I was adding some colour to it (because I felt like it :) (most zentangles I have seen are in black and white but some do have colour)

Serenity Prayer:
God grant me the serenity to accept things I cannot change,
the courage to  change things I can and
the wisdom to know the difference".

Thanks for reading this far, even though this post sounds very gloomy, I am sure things will be ok and we will get used to our new normal.

He estado bastante callada y con una buena razón. Desafortunadamente la vida nos mandó una de esas cosas impensables y he estado haciendo lo que sea que tengo que hacer. Me disculpo de entrada ya este post puede ser largo. 

Seis semanas ayer, nuestro hijo Mateo de 15 años tuvo una hemorragia cerebral debido a una malformación congénita (Malformación Arterio-Venosa) y requirió cirugía de emergencia. No tuvo nunca ningún síntoma y esto fue una gran sorpresa. Somos muy afortunados de que él esté con nosotros todavía después de 21 días de terapia intensiva y está progresando muy muy bien. 

Gracias a Dios la hemorragia no causó mucho daño que sepamos en este momento (tiene uso completo de sus facultades mentales, su memoria no ha sido afectada y su sentido del humor sigue estando ahí, tiene casi uso normal de su brazo izquierdo y el viernes caminó por primera vez con ayuda de un caminador). Los médicos y enfermeras siguen diciendo que es un milagro. Yo creo en milagros ahora y estoy tan tan agradecida. Ha sido por supuesto una montańa rusa emocional.
El está ahora en rehabilitación neurológica, hemos comenzado a venir a casa los fines de semanas y para Navidad y Año Nuevo. 

Debido a todo esto, he estado viviendo en el hospital con él desde el 21 de Noviembre y por supuesto no he tenido tiempo (ni deseos en muchos casos) de crear arte. Mi hija me trajo cosas al hospital ya que no volví a casa desde entrar en emergencia. Mi cosas para dibujar estaban entre esas primeras pero no tenía ningún deseo de documentar en papel lo que me rodeaba. A medidas que las cosas se pusieron  menos críticas empecé a garabatear, empecé a hacer lo que llama "zentangling", una mezcla de meditación y diseños repetitivos. No requiere gran concentración o planes específicos, acepta interrupciones y se puede hacer en un rato. Era mi forma de hacer algo por mi, de perderme mientras estaba en el hospital.
Mientra él estaba en Terapia Intensiva, creo que fue a mediados de Diciembre una amiga puso en su Facebook una nota con referencia al desafio de 30 cuadros en 30 dias que comenzaba en Enero y me dió mucha pena el darme que cuenta que probablemente no iba a poder participar esta vez. He echo 3 de los 4 que han  ocurrido hasta ahora y tenia inteciones de hacerlo de nuevo. Desafortunadamente, para agregar insulto a la herida, me levanté el 1 de ańo muy engripada (tenia planeado pintar). Me he pasado los ultimos 3 días en la cama (Hoy estoy mejor) y he decidido que voy a participar en el desafío de todas formas: Va a ser "La Cantidad Que Sea de lo Que Sea en 30 días". No importa lo que sea, no importa cuantos. Lo que importa es hacer algo creativo para tratar de reabastecer mis tanques que estan bastante vacíos en este momento.

Asi que acá está la primera creación de 2015, un zentangle. Esto me vino mientrasle agregaba color, porque tenía ganas de agregarle color, la mayoría que he visto son en blanco y negro.

y la sabiduría para reconocer la diferencia.
