This is the last painting I did last year, the day my son went into the hospital. Little did I know what was ahead of us while I was painting that morning!   Our life changed in a nanosecond, thankfully it is slowly coming back to normal, or a new normal. I am EXTREMELY thankful for the way things are progressing with  Mateo's recovery.
The rose is from a photo I took while walking along Corona del Mar in California. I painted it on canvas and didn't enjoy the process as much as when I paint on board but I am pleased with it. The interesting is that my approach used to be different and I used to love canvas! Hmmm, ..... I am just thinking out loud here... Maybe canvas are for acrylic and boards are for oils in my world. Maybe some  painters wit more experience  are going Duh! but I think it is more personal preference than anything else, isn't it?

Esta es el último cuadro que hice el año pasado, el día que mi hijo entró al hospital. No tenía idea de lo que nos estaba por pasar mientras pintaba esa mañana! Nuestra vida cambió en un nanosegundo y gracias a Dios de a poco está retornando a lo normal, la nueva normalidad. Estoy por supuesto EXTREMADAMENTE agradecida de que todo esté progresando tan bien con Mateo.

Esta rosa es de una foto que saqué caminado en Corona del Mar en California. La pinté sobre lienzo y no disfruté el proceso tanto como cuando pinto en panel de madera pero estoy contenta con cómo quedó. Es bastante interesante porque mi proceso era distinto y antes me gustaba mas el lienzo!! Hmmm..... estoy pensando en voz alta..... tal vez los lienzos son para acrílicos y los paneles son para óleos en mi mundo. Tal vez algunos artistas con mas experiencia dicen "Y Claro!" pero creo que es mas que nada preferencia personal, no?

Dressed up to the Nines

So about a lifetime ago, back in November of last year, I took a wonderful workshop with Dreama Tolle Perry. I have admired her work for a quite a while and when a space opened up in one of her workshops I just had to go. Took a few days, turned it into a mini vacation with my husband and we had a lovely time in Newport Beach, CA.  I was after learning her application of colour and brushstroke, her paintings have an impressionistic look which I just love. I learnt a LOT!  See here for my post about her workshop and the work we did in it.
"Dressed up to the Nines" came out of an image I had taken years ago. On the way to my in-laws, there is this house with beautiful gardens that was always decorated in very funky ways. You should have seen the Xmas displays! Anyway, I hadn't tackled it and I decided to give it a try the week after I came back from Dreama's workshop. They say you should apply what you have learnt in a workshop as much as you can the week after so it solidifies and doesn't go to forgotten land. I had a blast with this one, loved painting all those flowers and outrageous colours  in the scarecrow. Hope you like it!
My son is doing very well, slowly reinserting himself in school. He is taking 4 courses now, Math, Science, Socials and English plus Physio and other therapies. He is a busy boy! which make me a busy Mom as I spend my days now driving and waiting it seems. Spring is here though and I am loving going for walks and sketching while I wait (when I am not organizing schedules and appointments :)

Hace toda una vida, en Noviembre del año pasado tomé un curso espectacular con Dreama Tolle Perry. He admirado su trabajo desde hace bastante tiempo y cuando vi que tenía un espacio en uno de sus cursos, lo tomé! Mi esposo y yo entonces nos tomamos unos días extra y nos hicimos una mini vacación, la pasamos muy bien en Newport Beach, California.  Fui especialmente a aprender su manejo de color y pincelada, sus pinturas tienen un aire impresionista que me encanta. Aprendí muchísimo. Ver acá mi post sobre el curso y el trabajo que hicimos.
"Toda Vestida" salió de una imágen que saqué hace años. Camino a la casa de mis suegros hay una casa con jardines hermosos y muchas  flores. Siepre decoran el jardín con cosas como estas. Tienen que ver lo que hacen para Navidad a veces! Nunca me había atrevido a pintarla por los colores y decidí hacerlo la semana después del curso con Dreama. Dicen que despues de un curso hay que tratar de pintar  mucho la semana sigueitne para poner en práctica y solidificar lo aprendido.  La  pasé espectacular con este cuadro, me encantó pintar esas flores y colores exhuberantes del espanta pájaros. Espero que les guste!
Mi hijo anda muy bien, de a poco reinsertandose en la vida escolar. Está haciendo 4 cursos , Matemática, Ciencias, Geografia e Historia y Literatura Inglesa además de fisioterapia  y otras terapias.  Es un chico muy ocupado! lo que me hace una mamá muy ocupada ya que me paso los días ahira manejando y esperando. Ya está llegando la primavera y me encanta ir a caminar y dibujar mientras espero (cuando no estoy organizando horarios :)

January Collage

Well.... I can't say that I did super well, managed to do 9 zentangles only but it is better than none which was what I thought I would be able to do at the beginning of December. I did do as well a whole bunch of sketches and drawings that I never posted. More important than anything, I learnt something new that I am sure I'll be able to apply in my artwork.
Thank you for your support and encouragement. It was wonderful to follow the posts of so many artists that jumped right in and were able to play with their art for a concentrated period of time. I do believe it does make a big difference in the quality of what you produce as an artist. Thank you Leslie Saeta for hosting it again. I hope you decide to do it again in September!

Bueno..... No puedo decir que anduve bárbaro, alcancé  a hacer 9 zentangles solamente pero es mejor que nada, que es lo que creí que iba a poder hacer en realidad al principio de Diciembre. Hice también varios dibujos y bosquejos que nunca publiqué. Lo mas importante de todo es que aprendí algo nuevo que estoy segura voy a poder aplicar en mi arte.
Gracias a todos por el apoyo y aliento. Fue maravilloso seguir el progreso de tantos artistas que participaron y jugaron con su arte durante este periodo concentrado e intenso. Estoy convencida de que mejora la calidad del arte que producimos como artistas. Gracias Leslie Saeta por haber organizado este desafio de nuevo, espero que lo hagamos de nuevo en Septiembre!

I have been drawing but I haven't been posting. Life has changed again:  we are readjusting to being back home and Mateo, my son, getting slowly back into school. I am mainly a schedule coordinator and taxi driver now! (Which is a great thing, I am not complaining! He is doing extremely well, re-inserting back into regular life!) The thing is that I am running on a very low battery these days, probably just the stress of it all catching up with me so even when I may have the time to paint here and there, honestly I don't have the energy for it at the moment.  Have been drawing and sketching though and enjoying it.

He estado dibujando pero no estado esribiendo en el blog. La vida ha cambiado de nuevo ahora que mi hijo Mateo ya no está en el hospital, está de vuelta en casa y recomenzando de nuevo muy lentamente con la escuela. Ahora yo soy coordinadora de horarios y taxista! (lo que es buenísimo, no me quejo! Está excepcionalmente bien, re insertandose en la vida normal) La cosa es que ando con pocas baterías estos días, probablemente el estrés de todo lo que he vivido en los últimos dos meses.  A pesar de tener un poquito de tiempo disponible no tengo energía para pintar honestamente. Sí he estado dibujando y haciendo bosquejos y lo estoy disfrutando mucho.


I started this zentangle (the one below) a few days ago and I was really liking it until towards the end  I chose the wrong pattern. It completely changed the look of it all and I didn't like it too much any more  but I learnt a lot about  transitioning from one pattern to another. I also chose to leave the sides straight which made it very static.

Comencé este zentangle hace unos días (el que está abajo) y me estaba gustando hasta que casi al final le agregué el diseño equivocado. Cambió el dibujo por completo y no me gustó más pero aprendí mucho sobre cómo hacer funcionar las transiciones de un diseño a otro. Además había decidido que los costados fueran derechos lo que hizo que todo fuera muy estático.

Then I said ok, I like some of what happened here so I started again using those elements I liked, changed a few things and thought putting the one at the top was a great idea...... hmmmm, not so much. It gave me the instant feeling of oppression and barb wire (who knows where that came from, but it makes me think of a chicken coop!)  See the photo below.

Así que dije bueno, me gustan algunas de las cosas que pasaron acá y comencé otro usando esos elementos que me habían gustado, cambié algunas cosas y me pareció que usar el diseño de arriba era una gran idea.... Hmmmmm, no tanto. Me dió la sensación de opresión y alambrado (quien sabe de donde salió esa idea, me hace pensar en un gallinero!) Es la imagen de abajo.

 This is my favourite so far... I was trying to use organic shapes and landscape as inspiration and I ended up with this design that makes me think of the ocean and under water. In order to learn about zentangling I have been following a book called "One Zentangle a Day" by Beckah Krahula. I am going through the chapters, learning new patterns and then producing a daily (or not so daily) zentangle. There is wealth of information on internet of course for anyone interested in starting out. Wouldn't some of these designs look great incorporated into semi abstract larger mixed media pieces???? Hmmmm...... My wheels are turning!

(Update on my son: He is is doing SOOOO well. We may know tomorrow his discharge date from the hospital, it was tentatively booked for Feb 5 but he is doing so we've been told they will move it earlier. He started today doing some school work, we will see how he does and progressively increase the load. He is walking without crutches and we see light at the end of the tunnel. Life is good :)

Este es mi favorito hasta ahora. Estaba tratando de usar formas orgánicas y el paisaje como inspiración y terminé con este diseño que me hace pensar en el océano y todo debajo del agua.  Para aprender sobre el "Zentangle" estoy siguiendo un libro que se llama "Un Zentangle por Día" por Becka Krahula. Hago los capítulos, aprendo nuevos diseños y produzco un zentagle diario (o no tan diario). No estarían muy buenos algunos de estos diseños incorporados a trabajos semi abstractos mas grandes????? Hmmmm....... se me vienen un montón de ideas!

(Noticias de mi hijo: anda TAN bien!!! Mañana tal vez sepamos si le dan de alta en los próximos días, esa fecha estaba tentativamente marcada para el 5 de Febrero pero como anda tan bien, nos han dicho que van a adelantar esa fecha. Hoy él comenzó a hacer un poco de deberes para la escuela, vamos a ver cómo responde y  si se puede de a poco aumentar la cantidad. Está ya caminando sin muletas ni bastones y finalmente vemos la luz al final del tunel. La vida es buena. :)

This is today's offering. I wanted to use the same main "characters" as yesterday, I wasn't happy with one particular tangle I had added and I wanted to explore them further. It's ok but I don't love it. The name today comes from a moment this evening. While I was sitting here doing this tangle, my son was next to me doing homework he had brought from the hospital, some concentration and focusing exercises. At one point I thought, Thank you God, as I have said SO many times in the last few weeks. A big sense of gratefulness comes over one at times. I am grateful he is here with us and grateful he is performing regular activities. And I know things will only get better! :)

Este es el ofrecimiento de hoy. Quería usar los mismos "personajes" de ayer ya que no había estado contenta con un diseño en particular y quería explorarlos un poco mas. Está bien pero no me encanta. El nombre de hoy vino de un momento esta noche. Estaba sentada acá y mientras hacía este  zentangle my hijo estaba al lado mío haciendo sus deberes que trajo del hospital, ejercicios para concentración y focalización. En un momento pensé: Gracias Dios!, como he dicho TANTAS veces estas semanas pasadas. Un gran sentimiento de agradecimiento me viene a menudo. Agradecida no solo de que esté con nosotros y agradecida de que pueda realizar actividades normales. Y se que las cosas se van a poner cada día mejor!  :)

This is what  I produced today. The name comes from thinking how precious life and health are, how we take so much for granted and many times we realize how much we were able to do when we no longer can.  One of the new patterns today made me think of a jewel hence the precious thought. Wish I had done a couple of things differently but the main purpose of these designs is to just do them and loose myself more than having a wonderful product. Hope you all enjoyed your weekend.

Esto es lo que produje hoy. El nombre viene de pensar en lo preciosa que son la vida y la salud, como damos mucho por sentado y muchas veces nos damos cuenta de lo que podiamos hacer cuando ya no podemos hacerlo. Uno de los diseños de hoy me hizo pensar en una joya y eso me hizo pensar en lo "precioso". Ojala hubiera echo un par de cosas diferente pero la razón pricipal de estas creaciones es el echo de hacerlo y perderme mas que tener un producto terminado. Espero que todos hayan tenido buen fin de semana.

Didn't get to do one yesterday, did this one today and I tried something different. I had thrown some colour on the paper yesterday, just a wash of colours. So today I drew overtop of that. It's ok, I missed the sharpness of the white paper around it. I may grab white acrylic and do a white border around it.

Good progress for my son. He is walking with elbow crutches, is able to walk without them and we have a tentative release day from the hospital of Feb 5! We have started however to come home for dinner and overnight stay, and we spend the whole day from 9 till 3ish at the hospital in all sorts of therapy sessions. Just trying is new routine and see if it works. So far so good.

Ayer no pude hacer nada, hice este hoy y probé algo differente. Había puesto un poco de color en este paper ayer, simplemente una mezcla de colores. Así que hoy dibujé arriba de ese color. Está bueno pero extrañé el brillo blanco del papel alrededor del dibujo. Tal vez le agrege una banda de acrílico blanco alrededor. 

Buen progreso con mi hijo.Esta caminando con bastones (y puede caminar sin ellos). Tenemos una fecha tentativa para el alta del hospital del 5 de Febrero! Hemos empezado a venir a casa todas las noches, cenamos y dormimos en casa y estamos de nuevo en el hospital desde las 9 hasta las 3 para todas las terapias distintas que él tiene. Estamos probando esta nueva rutina para ver como funciona. Hasta ahora bien.

Este es el ofrecimiento de hoy. No he decidido todavía si voy a agregarle color o no, probablemente si. Realmente disfruté aprender este diseño como de hojas, me atrajo seguro por mi amor a las plantas y formas orgánicas. Gracias a todos por los mensajes y emails que recibí desde el post de ayer. El apoyo ha sido extraordinario desde el comienzo, gracias!

"Serenity Prayer"

I have been very quiet and for a good reason. Unfortunately life threw our way one of those unthinkable things and I have been been doing whatever needs to be done. I apologize in advance if this post gets lengthy.

Six weeks ago last Friday, our 15 year old son Mateo had a brain hemorrhage due to a congenital malformation (AVM) which required emergency surgery. There were never any symptoms and it all came as a huge surprise but despite all that we are extremely fortunate that after 21 days in intensive care we still have him with us and doing remarkably well. Thankfully the hemorrhage didn't cause too much damage that we know of at the moment (he is in full use of his mental capacities, his memory and sense of humour are all there, he has pretty much full use of his left arm and on Friday he walked for the first time  with the help of a walker.) Doctors and nurses are commenting in how it is pretty much a miracle. I believe in miracles now and I am so very thankful. It has been of course an emotional roller coaster. 

I have been living at the hospital with him since Nov 21 and of course have had no time (or desire at times) to do any art. He is now in the neurological rehab floor, we have also started to come home on weekends, Christmas and New Year. The second day my daughter packed some things to take to the hospital for me as I never came back home  after we went into emergency, my sketching supplies were among those very first things  but I had no desire to record on paper what I was surrounded by. As things started to get less critical I started to doodle, started to do some "zentangling" which is a combination of meditation and drawing patterns. It is mindless, requires very few supplies and can done anywhere. It was my way of doing something for myself, loosing myself while at the hospital. 

While he was still in Intensive care, towards the beginning of December a friend posted on facebook about the 30 day challenge and I was very upset when it dawned on me I wouldn't be able to do it. I have done 3 of the 4 that have happened and had every intention of doing it again. Unfortunately, to add insult to injury I woke up in Jan 1 (I was planning to go paint) sick as a dog with a flu bug or something. I have spent the last 3 days in bed, but I have decided that I will do the challenge anyway. It will be a "However Many Whatevers in 30 Days". Doesn't matter what, doesn't matter how many. The goal is to do something creative for myself to see about replenishing my tanks which are pretty empty at the moment.

So here is the first creation of the year, a zentangle called "Prayer". This came to me as  I was adding some colour to it (because I felt like it :) (most zentangles I have seen are in black and white but some do have colour)

Serenity Prayer:
God grant me the serenity to accept things I cannot change,
the courage to  change things I can and
the wisdom to know the difference".

Thanks for reading this far, even though this post sounds very gloomy, I am sure things will be ok and we will get used to our new normal.

He estado bastante callada y con una buena razón. Desafortunadamente la vida nos mandó una de esas cosas impensables y he estado haciendo lo que sea que tengo que hacer. Me disculpo de entrada ya este post puede ser largo. 

Seis semanas ayer, nuestro hijo Mateo de 15 años tuvo una hemorragia cerebral debido a una malformación congénita (Malformación Arterio-Venosa) y requirió cirugía de emergencia. No tuvo nunca ningún síntoma y esto fue una gran sorpresa. Somos muy afortunados de que él esté con nosotros todavía después de 21 días de terapia intensiva y está progresando muy muy bien. 

Gracias a Dios la hemorragia no causó mucho daño que sepamos en este momento (tiene uso completo de sus facultades mentales, su memoria no ha sido afectada y su sentido del humor sigue estando ahí, tiene casi uso normal de su brazo izquierdo y el viernes caminó por primera vez con ayuda de un caminador). Los médicos y enfermeras siguen diciendo que es un milagro. Yo creo en milagros ahora y estoy tan tan agradecida. Ha sido por supuesto una montańa rusa emocional.
El está ahora en rehabilitación neurológica, hemos comenzado a venir a casa los fines de semanas y para Navidad y Año Nuevo. 

Debido a todo esto, he estado viviendo en el hospital con él desde el 21 de Noviembre y por supuesto no he tenido tiempo (ni deseos en muchos casos) de crear arte. Mi hija me trajo cosas al hospital ya que no volví a casa desde entrar en emergencia. Mi cosas para dibujar estaban entre esas primeras pero no tenía ningún deseo de documentar en papel lo que me rodeaba. A medidas que las cosas se pusieron  menos críticas empecé a garabatear, empecé a hacer lo que llama "zentangling", una mezcla de meditación y diseños repetitivos. No requiere gran concentración o planes específicos, acepta interrupciones y se puede hacer en un rato. Era mi forma de hacer algo por mi, de perderme mientras estaba en el hospital.
Mientra él estaba en Terapia Intensiva, creo que fue a mediados de Diciembre una amiga puso en su Facebook una nota con referencia al desafio de 30 cuadros en 30 dias que comenzaba en Enero y me dió mucha pena el darme que cuenta que probablemente no iba a poder participar esta vez. He echo 3 de los 4 que han  ocurrido hasta ahora y tenia inteciones de hacerlo de nuevo. Desafortunadamente, para agregar insulto a la herida, me levanté el 1 de ańo muy engripada (tenia planeado pintar). Me he pasado los ultimos 3 días en la cama (Hoy estoy mejor) y he decidido que voy a participar en el desafío de todas formas: Va a ser "La Cantidad Que Sea de lo Que Sea en 30 días". No importa lo que sea, no importa cuantos. Lo que importa es hacer algo creativo para tratar de reabastecer mis tanques que estan bastante vacíos en este momento.

Asi que acá está la primera creación de 2015, un zentangle. Esto me vino mientrasle agregaba color, porque tenía ganas de agregarle color, la mayoría que he visto son en blanco y negro.

Una gran amiga hace poco tuvo una beba hermosa y quería pinatr algo para ella. He visto a Carol Marine y otros artistas pintar zapatitos de bebés y quise probar hacerlo, las pinté la semana antes de ir a California.  Le saqué una foto  a una par de botas de la beba que son muy bonitas y super chiquitas! It's been a while since my last post but there is just too much stuff happening! (all good stuff)  I will get organized to post regularly (hopefully!)


Last week I attended an excellent workshop, among the best for me.  I went down to Costa Mesa, California (close to Newport Beach) and had a great time with Dreama Tolle Perry and a group of very talented ladies from different parts of the United States. I have admired Dreama's work quietly for the last couple of years and every single time a post from her came into my Feedly, my heart would just skip looking at the luscious colour and excitement in her paintings. I would invariably and immediately have a smile on my face. THAT is why I signed up and flew down to take it. Of course, I was not disappointed. Her system clicked with me at once and now a few days later realize that this workshop is exactly what I have been looking for these last few months. Lately, I have been happily dissatisfied with my work and have been searching for the direction I want to go into. I knew I wanted more colour in my work and now I have  a way (I hope). I am very excited to go hide in my studio and play with my new found knowledge. Interesting how things always happen for a reason and timing is everything isn't it? I may not have been ready for  it last year maybe and a third workshop as well space available came up at the right time.  Thank you Dreama!

"The Golden Hour" was my painting done on the last day of the workshop when we worked from our own reference material. I am very pleased with it.  The other 2 paintings were done on days 1 and 2 of the workshop, everyone using the same reference material, a photo provided by Dreama. :)

Hace bastante que no escribo, es que  están pasando demasiadas cosas! (todas buenas). Me voy a organizar para escribir mas a menudo (espero).

La semana pasada tomé un curso excelente, uno de los mejores para mí. Fui a Costa Mesa, California, muy cerquita de Newport Beach y la pasé bárbaro con Dreama Tolle Perry y un grupo de mujeres muy talentosas de distintas partes de Estados Unidos. He admirado el arte de Dreama desde hace 2 años mas o menos. Cada vez que uno de sus posts me entra en el Feedly, se me acelera el corazón mirando el delicioso colour y energía en sus pinturas. Siempre en el acto tengo una sonrisa en la cara y es exactamente por eso que fuí a tomar  un curso con ella. Por supuesto, no me desilucioné. Su sistema me funcionó en el acto y hoy, unos días despué de haber terminado el curso, me doy cuenta que es exactamente eso lo que hace varios meses vengo buscando. Ultimamente he estado felizmente desconforme con mi trabajo y he estado buscando una nueva dirección para mi. Sabía que quería mas color en mi arte y ahora tengo la forma de hacerlo (espero). Estoy muy entusiasmada con encerrarme en mi taller y jugar con todo el conocimiento nuevo que tengo. Es interesante como las cosas siempre funcionan de cierta forma y en determinado momento por razones especiales y desconocidas. Tal vez el año pasado  no hubiera estado lista para recibir lo que se enseñó en el curso. Un tercer curso se agregó y había espacio esta vez.   Gracias Dreama!

"La Hora de Oro" fue un cuadro echo el úlimo día del curso cuando trabajamos de nuestras propias fotos de referencia. Estoy muy conteta con los resultados. Los otros 2 cuadros fueron echos en el primer y segundo día, todos usamos las mismas fotos, suministradas por Dreama. :)

I have recently become a part of the Island Illustrators Society and they are hosting a show called Fabulous Fakes. The premise  of the show is you could paint either an faithful copy of a master piece or your own interpretation of one.  I decided to have a go at it and after MUCH pondering and going back and forth on what to pick I ended up choosing a drawing Van Gogh did in 1880.


"Vincent van Gogh drew thousands of images to better his skills and to fulfill leisure time. He completed over 1,000 drawings, which are known of, from 1877 to 1890. Van Gogh saw drawing as a necessary task to build a foundation as an artist and to study form and movement." See more information about him at Van Gogh Gallery

I have recently signed up for an online drawing and sketching course (following Vincent's advice :D) and thought the drawing was in alignment with what I am doing.  It was fun, I specially enjoyed using pen and ink again, I used to use that medium a lot in combination with watercolours and hadn't done it in along time.  I used a sepia tone ink.

I'll be attending the opening on Saturday, Nov 1 from 2 to 4pm, there is some wonderful art in the show (not all of them are fakes!)

Name that Fake! 

The Island Illustrators Society Presents “Fabulous Fakes” on Oct. 29 to Nov. 9, held at the Coast Collective Gallery, 3221 Heatherbell Rd, in the picturesque and historic Pendray House on the shore of Esquimalt Lagoon.

This year’s Island Illustrators Society group theme show is Fabulous Fakes. Participating members will be showing serious replicas of old masters, contemporary masters and simply art works “in the spirit of” one of the greats. So far, we have spotted a faux Rembrandt, Toulouse-Lautrec and Gustav Klimt.

Reception this Saturday, Nov. 1, from 2 to 4 p.m.

There will be an afternoon reception with the artists in attendance, refreshments, and related works, prints and cards. Everyone is invited to attend and bring a guest!

Este año he empezado a formar parte de la "Sociedad de Ilustradoes de la Isla". Este grupo ha organizado una muestra llamada "Fabulosos Falsos". La idea es presentar un cuadro que es una copia de una obra maestra o inspirado por una obra maestra. Decidí partcipar y después de pensar un montón y mucha indesición decidí copiar un dibujo que Van Vogh hizo en 1880.

"Vincent Van Gogh dibujó miles de imágenes para mejorar su habilidad y para entretenerse en su tiempo libre. El completó mas de 1000 dibujos entre 1877 y 1890, Van Gogh consideraba que el dibujo era una tarea necesaria para tener buena base como artista y para estudiar forma y movimiento" Para mas información  visitar la Galería Van Gogh "

Hace poco me anoté en un curso online de dibujo y sketching (siguiendo el consejo de Vincent :D) y me pareció que copiar ese dibujo iba con mi deseo de dibujar mas. Lo disfruté mucho, especialmente me gustó usar tinta china que hacía ucho que no usaba, solía usarla mucho en combinación con acuarelas hace mucho tiempo. En este caso usé una tinta de color sepia.
Voy a ir a la recepción de artistas mañana Sábado 1 de Noviembre  de 2 a 4, hay piezas muy  muy buenas en esta muestra (y no todas son copias de obras maestras!)

I am so happy that 3 of my paintings were accepted into the Christmas Small Works - Show and Sale at the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria. The show starts on Friday Nov. 14 and goes to Dec. 31. :)))

"Spring on the Goose" and "Going Places" are 2 of the 3 paintings that will be in the show. They are oils I painted this year during one of the 30 day challenges.  They hold a special place in my heart as they will always remind me of the hard, happy, grueling days of marathon training. Wow, still can't believe I did that!

Estoy muy contenta porqe 3 de mis cuadros han sido aceptados en la Muestra y Venta Navideña de Obras  Pequeñas en la Gallería de Arte de Victoria. La muestra comienza el viernes 14 de Noviembre  hasta el 31 de Diciembre. :)))

"Primavera en el Goose" y "Yendo" son 2 de los 3 cuadros que van a estar en la muestra. Son óleos que pinté este año pasado en uno de los desafío de 30 días. Tienen un lugar especial en mi corazón ya que siempre me van a recordar los días duros, felices y tormentosos de mi entrenamiento para la maratón. Wow!, todavía no puedo creer que haya echo eso!

Pasen a visitar la muestra si  andan por la zona! Gran idea para regalos especiales de Navidad!

This is the painting I was working on last week to be part of the Black and White Fundraiser for Coast Collective (which by the way was a great success!). The painting didn't sell that night but I will anyway donate 50% of the proceeds to Coast Collective when it sells though this blog. I would like to try this scene again in oils and see how it comes out.
I have been very busy, quiet, not writing on the blog,  but working through my lists slowly but surely. I am BIG on list making, helps me stay focused. I developed a long one of paintings to get finished, some for submitting for shows, some commissions and some other ideas.
Have  signed up for an online sketching course, will share more on that on a later post. I am also getting supplies ready for a course I am taking next month. I am going down to California  to learn with Dreama Tolle Perry. I am VERY excited about this as I love her work.

Mainly I am enjoying the routine of coming into the studio daily and doing something, whether small or big for my art. The 30 day painting challenge certainly helped with developing the discipline to get in here. Many days at the beginning,  I may not FEEL like coming in here, specially when the sun is shining and there are millions of other things to do, but once I am  in here, magic happens :) It is not long before I say to myself with a big grin on my face: "I love what I do". Lesson for the day then: "Just show up" and get started, the creative juices will soon be flowing!

Este es el cuadro que hice la semana pasada para el Baile de Recaudacion de Fondos para Coast Collective (que fue un gran éxito). El cuadro no se vendió esa noche pero voy a donar 50%  cuando se venda por medio de este blog. Me gustaría pintarlo de nuevo con óleos y ver cómo sale.

He estado muy ocupada, callada, sin escribir en el blog pero de a poquito tachando cosas de mis listas. Simpre hago listas de las cosas por hacer, me ayudan a seguir en marcha y no distraerme. He desarrollado una lista larga de cuadros por pintar, algunos son trabajos sin terminar, Otros son para distintas exhibiciones en las que quiero particpar,  otros son pedidos, y otros ideas que tengo dando vuelta.
Me he inscripto en un curso de sketching online, les voy a contar de eso en otro post. He estado también preparadome para un curso que voy a tomar el mes que viene, voy a California a tomar un curso con Dreama Tolle Perry. Estoy MUY entusiasmada cone sto ya que me encatan sus cuadros. 
Principalmente, he estado disfrutando de mi rutina de trabajo diario, vengo al taller todos los días y hago algo, pequeño o grande, para mi arte. El desafío de 30 días me ha ayudado mucho con la disciplina diaria. Es interesante que muchos días al comienzo tal vez no tenga ganas de ir al taller, especialmnte cuando el sol está brillando y hay un montón de otras cosas que hacer. Pero una vez que estoy acá, empieza la magia :). Al rato no más, tengo una sonrisa grande en la cara y me digo: "Me encanta lo que hago!". La lección del día es entonces: "Simplemente vení" y empezá, los jugos creativos va a empezar a fluir enseguida!

Thank you so much to everyone that came to the 60 Paintings in 30 Days Open House!! It was a great success. It was meant as something informal, a chance to share our artwork with people that had followed our progress and we were overwhelmed by the support. We had way more people than we anticipated. Art chats, visits and sales happened! I sold 5 of my paintings (3 from this challenge and 2 from the first one!) as well as a bunch of cards! Thank you again! What was more exciting though was the fact that many artist friends were walking away feeling totally inspired to go paint! That is music to my ears as that is the way I feel many times when I go look at the work others are producing.  Who knows..... maybe next January we will have more local artists playing! :)

Lunch by the Lake is one of the ones I finished the week after the challenge ended. There you have the before and after shots. I am glad I finished it as it sold this past Saturday - Thank you Monica! Hope you enjoy it! (click here for the story behind this painting)

I have been busy these last couple of days painting something for the Black & White Fundraiser Ball for Coast Collective. There will be paintings for sale but buyers will not know who the artists who painted them are until after they purchase them.  I will post it after Friday which is the day for the Ball (of course I will be attending!) Muchísimas gracias a todos los que vinieron a nuestra muestra 60 cuadros en 30 días! Fue un gran éxito, la idea era algo informal, una oportunidad para compartir nuestro arte con la gente que nos había estado siguiendo. Tuvimos mucha mas gente de la que esperabamos; hubo charlas de arte, visitas y ventas! Vendí 5 cuadros (3 de este Sep y 2 de Sep 2013)  y un montón de tarjetas! Muchas gracias! Pero mejor todavía fue el echo que muchos artistas amigos se iban diciendo que estaban totalmente inspirados para ira a pintar y eso me encanta ya que así es como me siento yo muchas veces cuando voy a ver el arte que otros producen. Quien sabe.... tal vez en enero tenemos mas artistas que va a jugar con nosotros! :) 

"Almuerzo en el Lago" fue una de las que terminé la primer semana de Octubre. Aquí tienen las fotos del antes y después. Me alegro de haberla terminado ya que la vendí el sábado. - Gracias Monica! Espero que la disfrutes. (acá pueden ver la historia de ese cuadro)

He estado ocupada en estos últimos días pintando algo para "El Baile de Recaudación de Fondos para Coast Collective" . Va a haber cuadros en venta pero los compradores no saben quien es el artista que los pintó hasta después de haberla comprado.  Lo voy a poner en el blog la semana que viene, una vez que el evento haya pasado. Hay tiempo todavía para que compren los tickets para ir y apoyar a una de los lugares artísticos de destino en Victoria. Tal vez terminen con un Marcela Strasdas Original! :D  No vemos ahí!

This is the painting before touching up

This is one of the paintings from the 30 day challenge. The day I painted it I was short on time so I did the so called "37-minute exercise" (Look at Robert Genn's post on this)  Now I was able to see the painting with fresh eyes having as reference all the other paintings from the challenge I was happy with. I tried to add what I felt was missing.  At the beginning I thought I had to correct the buildings, the shapes especially. But I started darkening the darks; of course, the lights got automatically lighter and I felt this was a good direction to take. I have only heard this about a million times but there is nothing like experiencing something to actually go "Ahhhhhhh!!!! THAT is how it works!" You know what I mean? So, we need to remember that many times in order to make something lighter we just make whatever is next to it darker as everything is relative to whatever is next to it. There may not be a lighter light to add to make the work pop so the only option is to go in exactly the opposite direction: daken the darks. I also added some reflections and light in the water, some dark touches on the buildings and I am much more pleased with this painting now. It looks more finished to me. Onto the next one! I will show you in the next posts some other ones I corrected this week.

Esta es una de las pinturas del desafío de 30 días.  El día que la pinté  no tenía mucho tiempo así que hice lo que se llama "un ejercicio de 37 minutos" (Miren el post de Robert Genn sobre este tema) Esta semana pude mirar este cuadro con ojos frescos y teniendo como referencia los que me habían gustado del mes anterior empecé a cambiar algunas cosas. Al principio pensé que tenía que corregir las formas de los edificios, pero fuí en otra dirección y empecé a oscurecer los oscuros. Por supuesto, inmediatamente las luces se veían mas claras. He escuchado esto aporximadamente un millón de veces pero no hay nada mejor que descubrirlo uno mismo y decir: "Ahhhhh!!!!  ASI es como funciona!!" Entienden?  Asi que tenemos que recordar que muchas veces para que algo sea mas claro, tenemos que oscurecer lo que hay al lado ya que todo es relativo a lo que tiene al lado. Tal vez no haya una luz mas clara de la que ya hemos puesto y entonces la única opción es ir en la dirección opuesta: Oscurecer los oscuros. También agregué algunos reflejos y luz en el agua y unos toques oscuros en los edificios. Estoy mucho mas contenta con los resultados. Se vé mas terminada ahora. Seguimos con la próxima! Les voy a mostrar en los próximos días otros cambios que hice en otros cuadros.

Open House - Oct 11

Been busy for the last few days finishing the pieces  I produced during  Leslie Saeta's Sep 2014 30 paintings in 30 Days Challenge. I am finishing edges, framing some and looking at them all with an objective eye. Some of them need some TLC and that's what I have been doing for this past week and today. I'll see if by adding some touches and corrections here and there I manage to get them to sparkle as much as the ones I am happy with.

If you are in the area please do stop by on Saturday to take a look at the work June Haynes and I (the 2 artists from Victoria, BC that took part in the challenge) produced during the last month. He estado ocupada estos últimos días terminando lo que pinté durante del desafío de 30 Pinturas en 30 Días en Sep 2014 organizado por Leslie Saeta. Estoy pintando los bordes, enmarcando algunas y mirándolas a todas más objetivamente. Algunas necesitan  un poco de cariño y eso es lo que he estado haciendo y voy a hacer hoy. Vamos a ver si agregándoles algunos toques y correcciones  pueden brillar como las otras que me gustan.

Si andan por la zona pasen a visitar el Sábado para ver el trabajo que June Haynes y yo (las dos artistas de Victoria qque participamos) producimos durante el mes pasado.  Hemos organizado una Muestra en mi Casa/Taller de 2 a 4 pm, 1066 River Rd. 30 Paintings in 30 Days - Sep 2014

I am SO glad  I did the challenge again this September. Some days were a real challenge to get to it but it always amazes me what happens when I actually commit to it: It becomes a priority and I do it no matter what else is going on in my life. I missed some days but then I doubled up on some others and I did it! I am very pleased with quite a few of them, not all of them are keepers but I learnt something from every single day regardless of the outcome.

Positive things from the challenge:

- I am coming to understand more about my process and why some paintings work  better than others.

- I got more familiar with oils and how they work.

- I am working on finding my voice in painting and I believe this "bootcamp" month is amazing for developing my skills.

- I have produced a body of paintings that I will be able to use in various shows and events in the next couple of months.

- I have found a couple of different themes that I would like to explore more. 

- I have discovered  a few artists that I am following now through blogs or Facebook that are daily inspiration.

- I have met some wonderful artists in different parts of the world who have been very supportive thorough the month. There is an amazing global art community out there.

This time around it was only 2 artists from Victoria that actually did the challenge. Several people have mentioned how nice it would be to see them all together so June Haynes and I have decided to host an OPEN HOUSE at my place on Oct 11 from 2 to 4pm. We will have most of the pieces that we produced during this month.   Mark your calendars and stop by for some tea if you are in the area. Just a couple of hours in the afternoon to visit with friends and chat about art.It would be wonderful to see you! More details to come.

Estoy TAN contenta de haber echo el desafío  de nuevo este Sepetiembre. Algunos días fueron un desafío real,  el simple echo de poder pintar,  pero siempre me maravilla lo que pasa cuando me comprometo a hacerlo: Se transforma en prioridad y y lo hago a pesar de todo lo otro que este pasando en mi vida. Algunos días no pude pintar y otros días tuve que hacer 2 pero al final lo hice! Estoy muy contenta con bastantes de ellas, hay algunas otras que  serán descartadas o retocadas pero aprendí algo de cada día a pesar de los resultados, buenos o malos.

Algunas cosas positivas de este mes:
- Estoy entendiendo mejor cual es mi proceso y por qué algunas pinturas salen mejor que otras.
- Me familiaricé más con los óleos y cómo funcionan.
- Estoy tratando de encontrar mi voz en la pintura y este mes intenso es excelente para desarrollar mis habilidades.
- He encontrado un par de temas que quiero explorar mas. 
- He descubierto artistas que ahora estoy siguiendo por medio de blogs o Facebook que son inspiración diaria. 
- He conocido artistas en distintas partes del mundo que  que me han dado mucho apoyo este mes. Hay una gran comunidad global de artistas.

Esta vez  fuimos solamente 2 artistas que participamos en este evento. Varias personas han comentado que qué bueno sería poder ver las 30 piezas juntas asi que June Haynes
y yo hemos decidido tener una CASA ABIERTA el 11 de Octubre de 2 a 4 pm en mi casa. Simplemente un par de horas para visitarnos y charlar. Marquen los calendarios entonces y pasen a tomar un te si están cerca.
