Back in December I did a commission of a similar painting to this one. I actually did a couple of different options for my client to choose from and this is the one they didn't pick, interestingly enough I prefered this one! I love trying to recreate on canvas what looks like complete chaos and action happening at the start line of a sailing race. When you are looking from shore, all the boats are zigzagging back and forth and it looks like they are going to hit each other any time. I am very much a fair weather sailor, have never been on a racing boat so I don't know if it looks as chaotic from the boats as it does from the shore!

En Diciembre, tuve un pedido de un cuadro muy similar a este. En realidad hice 2 para que mis clientes pudieran elegir el que preferían y este es el que no eligieron, es interesante que yo prefiero este!  Me encanta tratar de recrear en lienzo lo que parece mucha acción y caos total al comienzo de una regata. Cuando uno está en la costa mirando a todos los veleros que están zigzageando parece que se chocan en cualquier momento y que se pasan tan cerca. Yo soy "marinera de buen tiempo",  no he estado nunca arriba de un velero que está en carrera y por eso no sé si se ve tan caótico desde el velero como se vé desde la costa!

This is the last of the flower fields I painted last December. As with the last, it was painted from another reference photo from our trip to Italy a couple of years ago. I love the background and all the colour peaking through behind the sunflowers leaves and stocks.  I did make a couple of changes to this painting before shipping it out of the studio to the exhibition but didn't take a photo of the final version.

Este es el último de los campos con flores que pinté en Diciembre. Como el anterior, lo pinté de fotos que había sacado en nuestro viaje a Italia hace un par de años. Me encanta el fondo de los arbustos y árboles y los diferentes colores que hay por detrás de las hojas y tallos de los girasoles. Le hice un par de cambios mínimos antes de despacharlo hacia una muestra pero me olvidé de sacarle una nueva foto de la versión final, es muy similar de todas formas.

Plein-Air Friday...... Weather was iffy, wasn't raining but it was very windy and I knew it would be even windier at Clover Point, the assigned location for the day, where it is very exposed . But of course  I went anyway and of course I get there to find Dave almost finished!! Charlie and Marie were the other ones that actually set up and painted in the wind. Brian sketched.  It was beautiful day after all, not very cold but indeed windy. (Thank you Joanne and Brian for the pics!)

As always there are quite a few things I like I about the painting but then there are a few other ones unresolved, I am not keen on the clouds, will let it be for today as I have ran out of time (the family wants to eat dinner???), but I may change a few things tomorrow.  Enjoy your weekend everyone!!

Viernes para pintar afuera.... el tiempo estaba medio, medio, sin lluvia pero con mucho viento y yo sabía que el Clover Point, el lugar elegido para hoy, iba a haber mucho mas viento ya que está muy expuesto. Fui lo mismo por supuesto y cuando llegué encontré a Dave ya casi terminando!! Charlie y Marie, fueron los otros 2 artistas que pintaron en el viento! Brian  hizo bosquejos.  Fue un día hermoso al final, con viento pero no mucho frio. (Gracias Joanne and Brian por las fotos)

Como siempre algunas cosas que me gustan en el cuadro y hay otras que no están resueltas todavía... no me gustan las nubes mucho, voy a dejarlo como está hoy, se me acabó el tiempo (La familia tiene que comer también!)  pero tal vez cambie algunas cosas mañana. Que pasen buen fin de semana todos!

A couple of summers ago we spent 5 weeks in Italy, it was of course absolutely wonderful. We rented a car and covered a lot of ground at a nice pace, sometimes we would only travel a couple of hundred kilometres between the places where we spent the night. We stopped in tiny villages to have lunch and walk around. LOVED Italy, we would go back in a second! Eventhough we saw so much, there is still so much more to see.... Going there on a painting trip is on my wish list....
This image was taken in the heart of Tuscany where these patches of sunflowers are just the thing to make you smile instantly. I painted this one back in December as well,   I particularly liked how the distant hills and  tree shapes in the back came together.

Hace un par de año pasamos 5 semanas en Italia, fue absolutamente maravilloso. Alquilamos un auto y recorrimos mucho territorio pero a un buen ritmo, muchos días sólo viajabamos 100 or 200 km entre los lugares donde pasamos la noche, paramos en pueblitos hermosos donde almorzamos y caminamos. Nos ENCANTO Italia, volveríamos en un segundo! A pesar de haber conocido mucho, nos queda todavía tanto por ver.... Ir a pintar a Italia está en mi lista de deseos.....
Esta imágen fue tomada en el corazón de la Toscana, donde estos campos de girasoles son perfectos para hacerte sonreir en el acto. Pinté este cuadro en Diciembre también y me gustó en particular como quedaron las montañas y árboles distantes.

I painted "The Wild Garden" back in December when I was trying out going bigger with my oils. I have wanted for a while to start painting larger than 11x14 which was the biggest I had done up to that point, so I chose a familiar subject, similar to my huge garden  painted before and it worked!! I followed the same process I always do with my oils and I am very pleased with how it all worked out, I was able to work the way I always do, "Alla Prima" (all in one sitting without letting the paitn dry) and it is giving me confidence to keep growing in size.

Pinté "El Jardín Silvestre" en Diciembre cuando estaba empezando a intentar pintar óleos mas grandes. Hace rato que quiero probar eso, más grandes que 27x35cm, lo mas grande en óleos hasta ese momento. Elegí un tema familiar para que me resultara más fácil, similar a mi jardín grande en acrílicos y estoy muy contenta con cómo salió. Trabajé "alla prima", es  decir todo en una sola sesión sin dejar que la pintura se seque, y estoy me ha dado más confianza para seguir creciendo en tamaño.

Today it's Friday, plein air day and  the day started VERY grey and VERY wet but given the experiences in the past, I decided to go anyway. It was POURING on the way there and the whole way I am hoping it will ease and clear up a bit..... When I got to our destination, Langford Lake, it was raining so hard and it as so windy that I decided to just go back home to the studio. Stopped for an errand and would't you know it? The sun came out and we had blue skies for the rest of the day. So, I turned around and went painting! In Victoria we say, "If you don't like the weather, wait 5 minutes!".

I need to finish it, there are a few things that I need/want to change, but it's good for today.

Hoy es  Viernes, día para pintar afuera  que comenzó MUY gris y con MUCHA lluvia pero con la esperiencias del pasado, dicidí ir de todas formas. Llovía a cántaros en el camino y todo el tiempo  voy esperando que aclare..... Cuando llegué a mi destino, el Lago Langford, llovía tanto y había tanto viento que decidí volverme a  pintar a casa. Tenía que parar en un lugar cerca de ahí y por supuesto a los 10 minutos había salido el sol y estuvo completamente despejado durante el resto del día. Asi que pegué la vuelta y fui a pintar! En Victoria decimos "Si no te gusta el tiempo, esperá 5 minutos!"

Necesito terminarlo a este cuadro, hay varias cosas que quiero cambiar, pero por hoy está.

You may remember January Morning from the Challenge. It was a plein air painting I did at Elk Lake last Jan, on a cold winter morning.... yep, the one when my fingers and toes were frozen for a good while afterwards. See older post here. I am happy to report  it is Sold and on its way to very nice people from Toronto, ON.
I don't usually post when paintings sell, but I may just start doing that a bit more, sharing the successes as well as the tribulations of painting  :)

We had a great opening for Red at Coast Collective on Friday night and for Burning Desire on Saturday. Thank you to all the people that travelled from Victoria and other parts of the island to come see us. We got excellent reviews of the show. :)

I also delivered my painting "Witness" to the Federation Gallery in Vancouver last Sunday and snuck in a visit to my daughter ...  if you are close to Granville Island  anytime between Feb 16 and 28, do stop by and see the Landscape show. Should be a good one too!

I have spent the last few days just recovering from the cold bug I got last week and putting some kind of order back in the studio.  Enjoy your day!

Tal vez recuerden"Mañana de Enero" que pinté al aire libre  para el desafío, es del Lago Elk, esa mañana de mucho frío.... si, cuando se  me congelaron los dedos de las manos y de los pies, esa misma, pueden ver el post anterior aquí. Bueno, estoy contenta de contarles que se ha vendido y está rumbo a gente muy linda en Toronto, Ontario. No suelo publicar mucho las ventas, pero al vez empiece a contarles  mas a menudo sobre esas pequenas (o grandes) victorias y no sólo las tribulaciones de mi pintura. :)

Tuvimos una recepción muy buena para "Rojo" en Coast Collective el Viernes a la noche y otra muy buena también para "Deseo Ardiente" el sábado. Muchisimas gracias a todos los que viajaron de Victoria y de otras partes de la isla para ir a ver la muesrtra. Tuvimos comentarios excelentes! :)

También llevé mi cuadro "Testigo" a la Galería de la Federación el domingo (Y aproveché para visitar a mi hija)... si estan cerca de Granville Island entre el 16  y el 28 de Febrero, pasen a ver la muestra "Paisajes", va a estar buena!

Me he pasado el último par de días recuperándome de la gripe de la semana pasada, tratando de poner un poco de orden en el taller. Que disfruten del día!

You are Invited to "Burning Desire"

You are Invited!

Well.... nothing like getting sick to slow me down a bit and force me to rest! Last Tuesday I mounted the show in Duncan I told you about and by the time I got home in the evening,  I had to go straight to bed. Nothing serious, just the cold/flu but it actually stopped me on my tracks for 2 days now. Today is the first day I am actually up and about, slow moving but up!
And it's never too late to let you know about our show in Duncan. "Burning Desire" came out of an invitation by Cheryl Bakke Martin to Lisa Kirk and myself to collaborate in this colourful show. We met last August at the Jeanne Bessette art retreat here on Vancouver Island where each of us dug deeper into that burning desire we each have to create. We have over 80 pieces in the show and we are hosting an opening reception tomorrow Feb 6. from 1 to 4. Please do stop by if you are in the area. It is at the Cowichan Performing Arts Centre. The show is open one hour before each performance. You can refer back tot the website to see their scheduling.  However, if you are in the area during business hours and the theatre is closed, just let them know at the ticket office or admin office on the second floor and they will let you in! Show runs until March 2.

Y bien, me enfermé y tuve que parar un rato! El martes pasado monté la muestra en Duncan de la que les he hablado antes y cuando llegué a casa de vuelta tuve que irme derecho a la cama, nada serio, una gripe,  pero me paró por completo durante dos días. Hoy es el primer día que estoy levantada, lenta.... pero levantada!
Y no es demasiado tarde para que les cuente de la muestra en Duncan! "Deseo Ardiente"  surgió de una invitación que Cheryl Bakke Martin hizo a Lisa Kirk y a mi para participar en esta muestra. Nos conocimos en Agosto del año pasado en el retiro de arte que hicimos con Jeanne Bessette aquí en la Isla de Vancouver en el cual cada una de nosotras profundizamos en ese "deseo ardiente" que cada una tenemos de crear.  Tenemos más de 80 cuadros en la muestra y tendremos una recepción mañana Sábado, 6 de Febrero de 1 a 4 pm.  Por favor pasen a visitar si andan por la zona. Es en el Teatro de Cowichan. La muestra durante el resto del mes está abierta mientras hay funciones solamente.  Sin embargo, si uds. pasan en horas de oficina y el teatro está cerrado pueden pedir en la boletería o en la administración en el segundo piso y los van a dejar  entrar! La muestra está hasta el 2 de Marzo.
